Le Tour est arrivé Preparations for the world’s biggest cycle race are well under way and the transformation locally to the colour yellow is now being seen! Both Bev’s Sandwich Shop and Greenvale in West Vale are fantastically decorated and well ahead of the game. This event is a once in a lifetime occurrence and not to be missed. If you have not chosen where you are going to watch Le Tour from then you still have some options. Elland Cricket Club is having a three day event from which you can see the cyclists climb the hill to Blackley. They are equipped with a large TV Screen showing the race itself (for although the race leaves Calderdale at about 2.30pm it will finish in Sheffield at around 4.30pm) and other sporting events such as the Wimbledon’s Men’s Final and World Cup Football. It has camping facilities and live bands on Friday and Saturday evening. Call 07805 475258 for further information. Brooksbank School are also offering a package, well priced at £50 per ticket, which includes a whole day experience on Sunday 6th with a large screen to watch the race together with breakfast in the Arthaus, lunch in an exclusive viewing area before returning to watch the end of the race on screen. Secure parking is included. For more information contact Brooksbank Sports College on 01422 374 791. They say that great things come in threes so also consider Blackley Cricket Club. It is planning a full weekend of entertainment on the 4-6th July. With live music on Friday and Saturday evenings, their first ever Beer Festival, Football World Cup Coverage, barbecue and hog roast it promises to be a great event as Le Tour passes within touching distance of the Cricket Club.
To get you in the mood, Elland Carnival is being held the day before on Saturday 5th July (more details next month). Let us not forget other organisational issues, here we’ve included some info from Calderdale Council’s website: Road closures for the Tour de France route will start as late as possible from m 6.30am on the Sunday to allow traffic to drain from the route for a period of half an hour. From 7am all the barriers and signage will be put out on the route. From 9am, the route is handed over to the race organisers who will then check the route and prepare for the arrival of the race. Keen cyclists may be interested to note that you are allowed to cycle the route for a time that morning. The road must be cleared half an hour before the caravan comes through and 2 hours before the race. Note, normal road rules apply though! Any roads linked to the route will also be closed at crossroads and junctions with the routes. There will be no parking on the race route. In the coming weeks Calderdale Council will get in touch with people who live on the route giving more information and alternate parking options. Keep up to date via social media @InnerCyclist for all things cycling in Calderdale or @letouryorkshire for general information.
Camping is also available for 3 nights on the hallowed turf! For more details phone 07765 677949.

Shrinking Violet By Radiance Beauty
Now that the warmer weather is here it’s time to get out our Summer clothes. I was looking through my wardrobe last week, anticipating a long hot summer (hopeful as ever!) and saw my favourite dress, just hanging there, looking beautiful. Losing a few inches gained over the colder months would certainly help do it justice when I finally get chance to wear it. However, if like me your diet is always starting tomorrow and you lose motivation for your new exercise regime before you lose any inches, then you can imagine my joy when I was offered the opportunity to lose inches by relaxing for an hour, albeit wrapped up tightly in a cling film like product! ‘Shrinking Violet’ is the revolutionary body inch loss treatment offered by Radiance Beauty in Halifax. Keen to find out more, I met with Fiona McCall the owner of Radiance who explained all about the product.
I had in fact lost inches from various parts of my body! I was advised that this process could continue for a further 72 hours. I left the salon completely relaxed with instructions not to shower for at least 24 hours and to avoid alcohol, caffeine and processed foods. I would definitely try this treatment again and it’s ideal if you have a special occasion where you want to look your best. Radiance is offering Go Local! readers a reduced price of £50.00 per treatment throughout June a saving of £15.00 off the normal price. Just call 01422 321400 to become a “Shrinking Violet”! For more information including Q’s and A’s on Shrinking Violet please visit Radiance’s website www.radiance-beauty.co.uk
“I’ve been really surprised by the popularity of this treatment, our clients absolutely love it!” said Fiona who went on to explain, “The body wrap is painless, and the process is non- invasive. Fat can be successfully removed from problem areas, such as thighs, buttocks and abdomen and as well as reducing fat, it can also improve the look of cellulite and stretch marks.” My treatment commenced with a full consultation and measurements taken from several key body areas. The first stage of the process was exfoliation with a dry brush to stimulate blood circulation and the lymphatic drainage system; this was closely followed by the application of a special mix of essential oils containing juniper, lavender and cypress. These oils aid phosphatidylcholine, a chemical substance that triggers lipolysis, the process that breaks down certain fats from cells. Then I was then wrapped in a cling film type product before lying on a warm bed. For the following 60 minutes I felt completely relaxed as I enjoyed a full facial including shoulder and scalp massage. At the end of the treatment Fiona removed the wrap and recorded my new measurements and revealed that

‘HD3 Fitness Centre’ is the new ‘Your Health Club’
Over the past few years, we’ve all become increasingly aware of the need to take care of our bodies, improve our health through physical fitness and to train for our favourite sports. However, gyms and fitness centres have become more than just places to get fit – they’re also places to socialise and relax. So when former educational specialists, Ruth and Carl Dawson decided to invest in a business that would also benefit the local community, a gym or health club seemed an obvious choice. The couple soon discovered that ‘Your Health Club’ on New Hey Road, Salendine Nook was for sale and, after spending some time in the club, felt that it was the ideal place. As a result, Your Health Club has now reopened as HD3 Fitness Centre Ltd and a programme of refurbishment has begun. The class timetable, which includes Zumba, Spinning, Circuit Training, Cardiotone, Pilates, Yoga, Body Conditioning, Indoor Boot Camp,
Nordic Walking and Powerhoop, has been taken to the outdoors too this Summer with the introduction of an Outdoor Boot Camp running twice a week. The great thing about the classes is that, unlike many other fitness centres, non-members are able to attend classes on a ‘pay-as-you-go’ basis. “We are very excited about the new HD3 Fitness Centre and our plans have been welcomed by existing members,” comments Ruth. “Our intention is to create a ‘chill out’ area for members to meet and relax, and obviously we’re going to buy some new machines, add extra classes, look at new flooring for the studio. And we’ve already taken on additional staff.” If you want to kick-start your fitness programme HD3 Fitness Centre is offering, until July, a month’s membership for just £23. For further information, please contact the team on 01484 646506 or email info@hd3fitnesscentre. co.uk or call in at the Fitness Centre on New Hey Road, Salendine Nook.

Saturday 7th June - Elland Lane Children’s Treat – revived! Eighty years ago people living in and around Elland Lane came together and established an annual event known as Elland Lane Children’s Treat. Now local people have decided to revive the event which will be held at Huddersfield Amateur Football Club, Old Earth, Elland. Old photographs (see the one above) show this to be exactly the same spot as in 1934 and the present day committee meet in the same place as the 1934 committee, the Spring Gardens pub!! From historical records, we know that in 1949, the procession started in Quebec Street, led by the Fire Brigade. Also taking part was a character called :”Donkey” Morton, with his horse and cart - he covered his face with jam first. He sold ice-cream from his cart. The treat had a fancy dress competition then they went to the Old Earth field for egg and spoon races, 3-legged races, and sack races! In 2014, there will be “Sorbie Balls” in which children can bounce around, five-a-side football and a penalty shoot out pitch and Mountain biking. Compass Bridge
will take children canoeing and there will be charity stalls from Overgate and Yorkshire Air Ambulance, a half size monster truck will be present and a racing car, fire engine and Police van. A selection of refreshments will be available, traditional music will be provided by a vintage fairground organ. Many local companies have helped to sponsor the event. We look forward to welcoming young and old to this free event, and to re-establishing this piece of local traditional culture.

Recipe - Raspberry & frangipane tart This frangipane tart is an absolute winner! Served warm with a little clotted cream – a little bit of heaven – and why not? Ingredients: 250g sweet pastry 200g fresh raspberries Frangipane: 225g ground almonds 225g icing sugar 225g soft unsalted butter 50g plain flour 4 whole eggs Apricot jam to glaze Method: Line a 23cm tart tin (one with a removable bottom is easiest) with sweet pastry, roll as thin as possible. Feel free to make you own pastry but readymade is absolutely fine. Rest in the fridge for 15 minutes, then place a double layer of cling film over it and fill with
uncooked rice. Place in the oven at 160oC for 20-25 minutes, take out and carefully remove the cling film and rice holding the edges, then place back in the oven for a further 5 minutes until the pastry is fully cooked. Combine all the Frangipane ingredients together in a bowl and whisk until thoroughly blended. Stir in the raspberries, reserving a few to arrange on the top as in the picture. Spoon all the mixture into the blind baked pastry case, smooth it until even and push the remaining raspberries into the surface. Bake at 160oC for 30-40 minutes until the mix is firm and golden in colour. At this point warm some smooth apricot jam in the microwave or in a pan and brush it all over to glaze. You will love every bite of this wonderful tart!

Gardening - HEAPS OF JOY…. Let’s cut to the chase before I get side tracked; if you haven’t got a big steaming pile in your garden, then I’m sorry but you just ain’t where it’s at. Composting is the new rock and roll and is the heart and soul of the nation’s “grow your own” frenzy, fuelled no doubt by Monty Don’s persuasive demonstrations on the telly, but mainly because turning what is essentially rubbish into a valuable resource sits nicely in most sane people’s psyche these days! When I was a lad, the compost heap was basically a dumping ground at the bottom of the garden, out of sight and mind, where the tortoise could bury himself and you could always guarantee a good haul of worms for fishing trips. It festered away, increasing in size whenever there was something dead to throw on it, before slowly putrefying into a sticky gooey mess which, once every blue moon, we would empty and deposit on the borders. Not exactly rocket science and probably Monty’s idea of a living (decaying?) nightmare – a far cry from the
pampered compost heaps of today. The new interest has also spawned a huge number of ‘new’ composting bins and systems; we have ingesters, digesters, aerobic, anaerobic, tumblers, wormeries and even one which sits in your kitchen and ‘eats’ anything that the kids or dogs won’t touch! In reality, all you really need for a successful compost heap is some old pallets nailed together and put in a sheltered spot which is accessible

enough so that you can get stuck in with a fork every now and then. The fork is absolutely essential as the heap must breathe; getting air right through the mix is vital. If you get it right and keep it just moist enough, you will soon feel the warmth generated by all the bacteria and other beasties doing their bit to produce your very own “black gold” - far more precious than Ratner’s finest! You can help the process along by adding some farmyard manure every now and then and topping it off with a piece of old carpet – or if you’ve got an old dog like me, you can stick him on top instead. We are lucky in having the space for a 3 bay affair – it makes life much easier for turning as you (or someone you bribe/ pay!) simply shift the contents from one bay to another and reap the rewards every 6 months. We even use one of the bays as a prize-winning pumpkin bed in the summer – by Halloween there are always plenty of spooky heads to choose from!
Just out of interest, my ‘Garden Oracle’ of 1899 (Price: One Shilling) lists the most popular concoctions for adding nutrients to the garden – there was no mention of a compost heap that year for some strange reason. My favourites are basic slag (titter ye not!), dissolved bones, kainit (?) and Muriate of Potash (?). They were also very fond of droppings (aren’t we all?) and there are various adverts from such august organisations as The Anglo-Continental Guano Works for their bird by-products, fresh from Peru. Together with a bit of matured nightsoil, I’m sure it would have made for ginormous turnips and kept all the Baldric’s very happy. Personally, I’ll stick to my own homebrewed compost – free from all nightsoil, whoever’s it may be! Jonathan Wild Gardener and a bit of a Rotter!

RSPCA Halifax/Huddersfield & District Go Local’s Pet of the Month Appeal MAGGIE
Maggie is a lovely older dog who is still quite active. She is looking for a place to call home throughout her retirement years. Sadly Maggie’s owner has passed away so she is now staying in a foster home; she is a gentle soul and loves to be around her human. Maggie came from a house with many other dogs and rabbits, when she arrived
she was a little unkempt and she let her foster mum bathe and clip her claws without a problem. Maggie is in a foster home with cats and gets on with them very well. She will even share her bed with them. If you are interested in adopting Maggie please contact the Centre, Maggie qualifies for the EARS Scheme which offers lots of benefits for people taking on older animals.

Technology
Will there soon be internet access for all? Ten years ago, 48% of British households had access to the internet and six years before that, a mere 9% had the ability to get online. Last year some 83% of households were connected and 72% of adults accessed the internet every day; clearly the digital age is proceeding full steam ahead. The way that we get online has also changed markedly over the last decade or so. In 2013, 61% of the population accessed the internet on the go via a mobile device, compared to 24% in 2010 and virtually none in 2005. At the turn of the century, the majority of the 20% of households that could get online did so via a dial-up connection; now over 99% of them use broadband. Broadband itself is evolving rapidly; 42% of connections were made using super-fast fibre optic in 2013, up 12% in just one year. This reflects the massive investment now being made by the likes of BT and Virgin Media in fibre optic infrastructure. The development in both capability and availability of mobile connections has been equally rapid. The original 2G connections were painfully slow where they could be made at all. 3G was a step change improvement, even allowing users to stream live video as they walked up the street. 4G is another great leap forward, significantly faster than conventional broadband. But what about the 17% of households that have no form of internet access? The government has a vision of universal access within a fairly short timeframe so the Office of National Statistics has been doing some research into these households. They found that 59% neither needed nor wanted internet access; they are effectively opting out of the digital age. However, the remaining 41% are more of a concern; they would like to have internet access but there are obstacles preventing them from doing so. Twenty percent simply don’t have the computer skills necessary to get online and around 13% are put off by the costs of either a computer or broadband rental. The figures suggest that up to 5%
of households cannot get broadband at all, either because they don’t have a phone line or their existing line is not broadband enabled. The situation is much worse where mobile access is concerned because it is dependent on mobile phone coverage. All the main networks have near universal coverage in urban areas, but in rural areas the level of coverage is very much dependent on the network provider; there are large areas of the country that have no coverage at all. So, how far away are we from the dream of universal access? For starters, we should discount the 10% of households that are not online because they don’t want to be – you can’t force people to surf the net. Many of the 3.5% of people who lack the IT skills to get online are contained within the 10% who see no need to do so and most of them are over the age of 60; time and demographics will chisel away at their numbers. The cost of broadband subscriptions and computers continues to fall steadily; eventually, virtually everyone will be able to afford internet access. A story that has got a lot of coverage in the press of late concerns plans by both Google and Facebook to use pilotless drones to beam the internet into inaccessible areas where a conventional broadband infrastructure simply does not exist. These huge unmanned aerial vehicles will circle 60,000 feet above the earth. Powered by solar energy, they will be able to stay aloft for months at a time and on board will be what is, effectively, the mother of all wireless routers. The technology already exists in the main; a bigger problem will be getting the approval of whatever aviation authority runs the airspace of the country being broadcast to. To answer the question posed in the title, there will soon be internet access for everyone who wants it. Graham Iek IT Consultant

Local history – Galas More anniversaries to celebrate this summer! It’s 80 years since the first Elland Lane & district ‘Children’s Treat’. This event has been revived and will be held this year on Saturday 7th June (further details in this GoLocal). It’s 50 years since Elland Gala was resumed after the interruption caused by a world war and the austerity that followed. Thanks to Derek Sharpe and Elland Round Table plans for the gala were kick-started in late 1963. A committee was formed and Herbert Fox was elected Chairman. The original idea had been to organise for a ‘new’ gala in summer 1965 but such was the enthusiasm preparations were brought forward and Saturday 1st August 1964 was chosen for ‘Elland Charity Carnival’. This gala was a resounding success. Mr Fox told the Courier ‘the carnival has succeeded beyond our wildest hopes’. A strong wind and occasional showers did not dampen the carnival spirit. People turned out by the thousand and the streets were lined six deep for the procession. Everyone then thronged to the Rec for a full programme of displays, competitions and sideshows. Vehicles assembled in the Commercial Street car park (recent demolition had created this space before redevelopment) for judging. The Greetland Dyers’ Club Trophy for best tableau by a charitable organisation was awarded to Elland Wesleyans. The Casson Shield for best tableau non-charitable went to Elland Round Table. Smartest Vehicle – John Harling, Best trade exhibitor was Leslie Slater, Best comic character – Roy Buckley, Best Adult’s fancy dress – Michael Wormald, Best Children’s’ fancy dress – Angela & Martin Bland, Best decorated bicycle/tricycle – Mark Ashton, Best road-safety characters – Chris & Gary Thompson were amongst the winners. A ‘Mr Elland’ competition was won by Michael Fallon (Elland Youth Centre) with Alan Sleight as runner-up. The earlier baby show attracted almost
100 entrants. Winners included Mrs Howard (three to six months), Mrs Bower (six to 12 months) and Mrs Gledhill (one to two years). There were two queens in the procession – the Carnival Queen Linda Stubbings, accompanied by her attendants Lucy Gregory and Linda Holroyd, and the Youth Festival Queen Margaret Wild. Three bands – Elland Silver, Elland Wesley and Elland Scouts – took part in the procession. Elland UDC Chairman Herbert Wilkinson and Vice-Chairman Albert Lane along with their wives rode in an open 1919 Sunbeam car. Bill Thomas (UDC Clerk) and other councillors followed in a council Land-Rover holding bags on long sticks to collect money for charity. According to the Courier the procession took 15 minutes to pass – everyone appears to have joined in – Cubs, Rotary, Red Cross, Anglican Young People, Motor Club, St. John’s Ambulance, Blackley Baptist, Greetland Dantes 69, the list is endless. There will be many who remember this happy event. Please support this year’s Gala – Saturday 5th July ‘Tour de France Special’. * Later this year we will be posting photographs from the 1960s/70s galas on our website. David J. Property - Commuter routes and house prices
Compare Windsor with Maidenhead. Both towns are in Berkshire and lie on the Thames. Windsor has a royal castle, a lovely town centre, fantastic shopping, lots of good pubs and restaurants and it is surrounded by glorious countryside. The housing stock has plenty of beautiful Georgian and Victorian properties and there is the added draw of Eton on the opposite bank of the river. Maidenhead’s town centre was mostly built in the 1970s and features few historic buildings. Some areas are quite run down and the housing stock contains a lot of ex council properties. Yet, surprisingly, house prices are significantly higher in Maidenhead and there are a great deal of new homes being built. New builds are few and far between in Windsor. What is the reason for this strange phenomenon? Quite simply, there is an express rail link from Maidenhead to Waterloo, whereas the train from Windsor to Waterloo stops at numerous stations on the way. What is more, Maidenhead will be the western gateway to the Crossrail system in a few years’ time,
which will enable commuters to get to the heart of London in around half an hour. The message is clear, to pay their inflated mortgages, residents need to have well paid jobs and they are not prepared to spend longer than they have to commuting to those jobs. A similar effect could be seen in the early 70s following the completion of the M4 motorway. The new road created a 100 mile long corridor of growing, affluent towns and cities between London and Bristol. A few years later the M40 did the same thing between London and Birmingham. Major investments in transport infrastructure invariably have a positive effect on house prices in the areas they connect; often good transport links are the most significant factor driving price fluctuations. In the past decade, investment in transport infrastructure has been at historically low levels, often because of planning wrangles. All this will, no doubt, add fuel to the HS2 debate.
