Putting the Yummy back into Mummy
Getting your body back into shape after having a baby is no laughing matter. Many mums spend hours sweating in the gym or hire a personal trainer but often find they are still left with a less than taut tummy. Becky Barraclough is a perfect example. Since having her first child, Ruudy 26-months ago the award-winning beauty therapist’s super-toned stomach has disappeared and been replaced with the `mummy tummy’. Now the 30-year-old is to follow the lead of Coleen Rooney, who had a bit of a helping hand to get her figure back to peak condition after the birth of her son in May. The Liverpudlian wife of Wayne Rooney turned to 3D lipo – a non-surgical non-invasive treatment that not only claims to melt fat away, but with sound waves and mechanical rollers also tightens skin and reduces cellulite. The machine, and others like it, are changing the world of weight loss today. The 3D system heats skin up to 41 degrees and melts the fat, which is excreted through the liver. The process continues to work for up to three months with up to 40per-cent permanent fat loss. There is no pain and no downtime. Little surprise that other celebrities, such as Alex Gerrard and Amy Childs are fans of the treatment too, and Apprentice winner 2013, Dr Leah Totton is doing a roaring trade with the machine in her London clinic.
Becky owns one of Calderdale’s busiest beauty salons, Saks Beauty in Halifax town centre. She opened 10 years ago in the former Saks hairdressersand in 2011 made history when she opened the first stand-alone Saks beauty salon in the country. She has over 3,000 regular customers and many of them are young mums who like her, are keen to get their pre-baby body back. She listened to their concerns and took action. She’s added a two-room extension and brought in the 3D lipo machine, which Saks have been testing around the country for the past six months. “Saks has done its research and so have I. As far as I am concerned this is the best machine of its kind on the market and the demand for it is unbelievable. We are already packed out with consultations and treatments,” says Becky. She believes the beauty of 3D lipo is that it offers a three dimensional alternative to liposuction, with technologies targeting fat removal, cellulite reduction and skin tightening for face and body. “While lots of our clients want rid of the mummy tummy and will use the fat freezing programme, other women have different concerns about their bodies and will need other programmes such as contouring or cellulite treatment. This machine does it all. “ All five therapists have been trained to use the machine including the latest new member, Katie Gledhill. Prices start from £100 for contouring and cellulite and £250 for fat freezing, but Becky has several offers on at the moment, and says anyone who wants more details should contact her or one of her staff.

Can you ‘Bear’ a Mountain Bike challenge? David Whitwam, Sowood
The Bear Mountain Bike Challenge was born out of a desire to raise awareness and funds for Type 1 Juvenile Diabetes.......oh and a big bottle of red wine! The rate of people affected by type 1 diabetes is increasing by 4% per year, particularly in under 5s, and when it entered our lives in 2012 it rocked our world. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition. For reasons not fully understood, the immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys the beta cells in your pancreas that produce insulin. You can’t prevent it by adopting a healthy diet or exercising. There is currently no cure; so a lifetime of blood sugar testing and injections lies ahead.
8am with a 9am start. The route covers 24.5 miles of challenging, but rewarding terrain. We aim to raise money from the registration fee (£15 pre-register at www.bearmtb.co.uk or £17 on the day). Each rider will receive a certificate, medal (first 150 registered riders) and a little treat! Please take time out and help make a difference.
As a parent that’s really hard to take.....but the choice is to either get bogged down with it, or to get up and do something to help find a cure........ that’s where The Bear Mountain Bike Challenge came from. The Challenge will set off from Stainland Bowling Green School on 14th September, registration from

Professionals in eye care When was the last time you had your eye sight professionally examined? Unless you have a current prescription or your eyesight has noticeably deteriorated, many of us neglect to attend the recommended 2 yearly inspection. I recently had the opportunity to meet with Jim Bottomley of Bottomley Opticians, located on Union Street in Halifax. This family owned business was established in 1948 and then in 1993 they expanded to open their second practice in Lindley. Jim explained how important a regular eye examination is “The eye gives an indication of a client’s general well being, through the use of technology we can find underlying health issues such as high blood pressure and diabetes.”
Such prompt diagnosis has resulted in Bottomley Opticians receiving a number of testimonials from customers thanking them for offering such a thorough eye examination. Jim went on to tell me “An in depth quality eye examination usually lasts 30 to 35 minutes and we can also take digital photos of the back of the eye. This can help in monitoring eye conditions.” Customer service is key to the success of any privately owned business Jim said “We have a great relationship with both customers and suppliers; we have an extremely high customer retention with most of our new clients coming through recommendation”. So if like me you are struggling to remember the last time you had your eyes examined, call Bottomley Opticians on 01422 331031 to book your appointment now.* *£35.00 Eye examination

Sowerby Bridge Rushbearing Festival Photographs Well after all the excitement and drama of Le Tour, it’s now time to slow the pace of events in our ‘Happy Valley’ and now prepare for the annual Sowerby Bridge Rushbearing Festival. This year as always, the Rushbearing takes place over the first weekend of September, so this year will be the 6th and 7th.
2010 - Sowerby Bridge Rushbearing Festival
Copyright 2011 Rushbearing. All Rights Reserved.
Site by Jop Smith
For centuries rushes were used as a form of floor covering for churches, and each year the old rushes were thrown outnextprevious and replacement rushes were taken to the churches by cart. The focal point of the festival would be the celebrated Rush Cart itself. There was great rivalry between villages, and the builders and supporters of each cart. Carts were decked out with valuable trinkets, with bands and Morris Dancers accompanying the procession. The focal point of the festival, the only one of its kind in Yorkshire, is a 16 foot high, 2 wheeled thatched Rushcart, weighing in at a ton. It is pulled by 60 local men dressed in Panama Hats, White Shirts, Black Trousers and Clogs with a Cart Maiden riding on top. They are accompanied by music and teams of Morris dancers, Clog Dancers and Mummers. The colourful procession is an unforgettable spectacle as it winds it’s way down from the village of Warley, through Sowerby Bridge and ending at the canal wharf by Saturday tea-time. Please note a slight change of events on Sunday morning. After a Rushbearing Service at St. Peter’s Church, Sowerby, the activities continue at St Peter’s Cricket club, and
NOT the Rushcart pub, which is still undergoing refurbishment. The procession will then leave from St Peter’s Cricket club, but will not pass through Hubberton this year, continuing to Ripponden via the hill top villages, and calling in for a pleasant afternoon’s entertainment at Triangle Cricket Club. The total distance covered is 9 miles. Stops are still made to present token rushes at the churches and to dance at the public houses and in the streets. Refreshments are available along the way. The passage of the cart serves as a focus for local community groups, charities and entertainment. For further information please visit - www.rushbearing.com

Free Emergency Life Support Training How would you respond in an emergency? The skills of Emergency Life Support (ELS) are simple, can save lives and can be learnt in just 2 ½ hours. They can be performed by anyone to keep someone alive whilst the ambulance is on its way. The free Heartstart Course will teach you how to: • Perform effective cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) • Recognise and treat someone having a heart attack • Care for an unconscious casualty • Help someone who is choking • Manage serious bleeding • Learning these simple skills could help you save a life. Heartstart UK is an initiative co-coordinated by the British Heart Foundation to teach members of the public what to do in a life-threatening emergency: simple skills that can save lives. It provides opportunities for people to learn the vital skills of ELS. Through Heartstart UK the BHF aims
to strengthen the chain of survival by promoting and supporting ELS training in the community. Heartstart courses will be run in the Ryburn Valley and will offer practical advice, whilst encouraging discussion on improving resuscitation knowledge and practice. The course requires no medical skills and illustrates that the benefits that CPR performed by a bystander in an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest are significant. If you can perform effective CPR whilst the ambulance is on its way you can more then double a person’s chance of survival. Courses held Monthly Tuesdays at Station Road Surgery, Station Road, Sowerby Bridge hopefully at Ripponden Surgery For Further information please contact Sue Bell on 07799 407497 *This could be the most valuable thing you will ever learn*

It’s all in the wrist action Those who remember the 1980s, and the vogue for wearing towelling wristbands if you were even vaguely considering any form of exercise, will have been wondering how long it would take for this trend to come round again. Well, I’m happy to say that it has – and today’s must have fashion accessory for sporty types does a whole lot more than stop the palms of your hands from getting sweaty. There are a plethora of products on the market; let’s take a look at a few of them. Probably the most popular is the Nike Fuelband – it’s already on its second generation. This chunky device is intended to be worn most of the time; it isn’t fully waterproof so you can’t go swimming in it and it needs to be recharged periodically. It contains an accelerometer to measure arm movements and a small LED display that provides a limited amount of information. The Fuelband can connect to a computer or mobile device via Bluetooth and a USB port. Initially, you set up your profile on a computer including your height, weight and so on. Then you set up the sports and activities that you intend to perform and set yourself a series of goals, for instance running 3km each day. When you achieve a goal, the wristband sends you a message of encouragement. Real lovers of data can sync their wristband with the Nike Fuel website and view graphs of their performance, then brag about it to their friends via the built in social media site. The Fuelband costs around £129. Next up is the Fitbit Flex. This has an advantage over the Fuelband in that it is a tiny module that fits in a replaceable rubber wristband, which means that you don’t have to wear the band all the time. The Fitbit is more geared towards lifestyle and wellbeing rather than sporting prowess; it will tell you how many steps you have taken and calories you burned but not how quickly you finished your run. One thing it does do better than the Fuelband is to measure and learn your sleep patterns. This
means that you can set the alarm to wake you as you move into a light sleep, therefore reducing. tiredness. On the face of it, the Fitbit represents pretty good value too, a snip at just £80. Our final contender is the Jawbone Up. This seems like the most complete product out of the group and is geared towards helping athletes manage their potential and help those who want to lose weight. You can enter in a variety of sports and the band will give you real time feedback on performance and calories burnt; you can even enter the number of calories consumed during the day – ideal for those seeking to lose weight. It also monitors sleep patterns in the same way that the Fitbit does. The sculpted nylon band, available in a range of colours, really looks the part too. At £124, the Jawbone comes in cheaper than the Fuelband and seems to be a superior product. While I have to admire the way that these products make use of state of the art technology at an affordable price, I’d have to question how they fit in with the modern lifestyle of most people. Serious athletes and sportsmen (and women) will already have a training program worked out in conjunction with a nutritionist and their coach. They don’t need any of these products. For those who just want to get a bit more exercise, they represent complete overkill – they don’t need all that data and they’d probably rather not have a hefty bracelet attached to their wrist for 24 hours a day. As for people who want to lose weight, all these devices have a fatal weakness; they tell you how many calories you’ve burnt but not how many you’ve consumed, something most overweight people have a real problem in calculating. Never mind, wearing a sport band says all the right things about you – you’re sporty, body conscious and dedicated. Money well spent! Graham Iek IT Consultant

Despite this Jess absolutely loves people. She is a very active dog and has lots of energy to run about and play. Jess is very good in the car she loves nothing more than to put her head out of the window to get some air. Jess is fully house trained and can be left alone for short periods of time. At the
Animal Centre she spends her days in one of the offices where she enjoys being around lots of people and playing with her toys. Jess is very popular with our dog walkers and is a firm favourite with one in particular who comes every morning to walk her. Jess has had a difficult life so far and has been treated terribly by humans so really does deserve the chance of a permanent loving home. If you could offer Jess a loving home please call into see her.

Recipe - Chocolate fudge brownie I can’t tell you how dense and rich this brownie is; it is gooey and intense and a truly wonderful sweet treat. And, better than that, it is simple and easy to make! If you like chocolate then you will love this and make it again and again. Ingredients: 250g dark chocolate (50-70% cocoa) 250g unsalted butter 4 eggs 375g sugar 150g flour (plain or gluten free)
Pour into a lined tray or cake tin and bake at 160°c for about 20-25 minutes until cracks appear on the surface; you do not want it fully cooked or it won’t be as sticky. Cool and cut into portion sizes; this will store in a tub for at least two weeks or longer in the fridge. Enjoy this with some clotted cream or ice cream.
Method: Melt the chocolate together with the butter in a plastic or glass bowl in the microwave. Heat for no more than one minute at a time on full power and stir each time to avoid scorching the chocolate. Whisk together the eggs and sugar, then stir into the melted chocolate and butter. Lastly, mix the flour thoroughly into the mix until completely combined.

Gardening - It’s Showtime! Last week I had the great pleasure of being invited by my father-in-law to the world’s largest flower show – Hampton Court. Never being one to turn down a freebie (particularly one involving a slap up ‘corporate’ lunch!) we duly set off at an ungodly hour for the epic (now I remember why I gave up commuting…) journey to Henry VIII’s former country pile. Thankfully, we missed the human tide that descended on the place later in the day and enjoyed what is, in effect, a dumbed down Chelsea – no royals, celebs or assorted wags getting in the way of what should be a very nice day out. All the right exhibitors were there, the fine dining was very fine, the backdrop of the Palace was stunning, even the sun had seen fit to shine. So why is it that, when everything else is so perfect, I still find the prospect of the event’s biggest “stars,” the show gardens, so dull? Try as I might (I have helped build show gardens at Chelsea and BBC Gardeners’ World Live in the past) I just can’t raise a smidgen of interest in either
the highbrow gardens at Chelsea, which cost the price of an average semi in Sunderland, or the more achievable and realistic displays at Hampton Court and elsewhere. I’m not sure, for instance, that a recreation of an Australian landscape is really something I’d go to a flower show to see – wouldn’t it be better at a theme park? And don’t get me started on “conceptual” gardens… why on earth are the RHS awarding medals to “designers” for creating mounds of earth with garden tools artfully stuck in them?!

Gardening - It’s Showtime!
Cont. from P54
That being said, I don’t think I’d be foolish enough to spurn the advances of any willing sponsor (just Google Jonathan Wild Gardens if you want my contact details) who would like a spectacular garden designed for next year’s Chelsea. Maybe then I could add those two great words award winning to my title instead of plain old Mr. In the meantime, what greater honour could I wish for than to have a real garden I’ve created put on public display– a garden being shown as opposed to a show garden! I designed and built this garden down in a gorgeous Dorset village just a couple of years ago and it has quickly matured into a stunning little gem. It might only be small but it’s full of interest, from the wildflower meadow that runs along a riverbank to lots of curving
natural stone raised planters filled with a with beautiful combinations of roses, herbaceous planting and spring bulbs. Being invited back to host the garden open day recently was terrific. There were hundreds of very impressed visitors (from a Lord and his Lady to the local postman!), in fact it was standing room only most of the time. The difficult bit was finding time to chat to everyone and spelling out the Latin names of all the plants – I must get some large easily readable labels for the next event! The good thing about this show garden is that it will get better and better with each passing year – sadly not something that can be said for its transient cousins at Chelsea……! Jonathan Wild Gardener and Wanabee Medal Winner!

Nostalgia Page by David Glanfield
Elland is Cross!
This silly tale dates from 1932 but fortunately has a happy ending. There were less than 4,000 telephone subscribers, business and residential, at that time in the Greater Halifax district. To make a call to another area meant telephoning the operator and requesting the town and number – Elland 100. The Post Office was proposing that customers should request ‘Elland Cross’ rather than Elland because operators, owing to phonetic difficulties, were connecting people to Irlam rather than Elland. Public opinion was aghast. How dare bureaucrats relegate our historic town to some upstart in Lancashire. David Garsed, Clerk to Elland Council said, ‘We are absolutely indignant. It’s an abominable suggestion’. Sidney Thornton, Father of the Council, ‘Any telephone operator who confuses Irlam and Elland ought to be sacked’. Given this fierce response by our council, the telephone authority in Leeds conducted a special operating test with the object of discovering how many times confusion arose...the proposal was quickly shelved.
Walter visits Blackley
A further celebration for this year is the 225th anniversary of Blackley Baptists. Obviously there are many events to recall for such an historic building that stands proud overlooking our town. In 1933 Walter Widdop, the eminent tenor, visited the chapel for an afternoon and evening recital. According to the press reports over 1,000 people were present and well over 100 people could not gain admission. Every seat was taken, the aisles were full and even the pulpit was used for overflow seating. Walter Widdop was on top form as he entertained the congregation with items that had made him famous. Mr GB Wilkinson (bass) assisted Walter and he was also well received. A collection for church funds raised £44 3s 3d. Few will recall this momentous and happy occasion but it would be akin to a top ‘pop star’ performing in Elland Park today.
Gone to the Dogs
The Ainley Top roundabout improvements are now finished. How different this area would have been if plans submitted in 1932 by a Blackpool consortium had come to fruition. The proposals included bowling greens, tennis courts, ballroom, cafe and a...stadium for greyhound racing! Elland Council was not amused; local churches, especially Methodists, were most not amused; and local residents were definitely not amused. Residents were also concerned, especially those who had just purchased the newly-built houses at Ainley Top. Considering the strength of local feeling it is somewhat surprising that Fixby councillors decided to give the scheme the go-ahead (although you may wish to draw your own conclusions). Anyway as often happens to grandiose schemes the plans fizzled away to nothing and the Fixby district was absorbed into Elland, Brighouse and Huddersfield by 1937.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!
It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Manager Andy Routledge feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps.
Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Elland, Greetland, Stainland, West Vale, Holywell Green, Sowood and Jagger Green areas & Andy is finding that his approach is a major
factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done
work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Andy a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!
