County Alpacas November update Barnie and Torchy have left the farm and gone to pastures new. It was a day of mixed emotions as it is always sad to see any of our alpacas move to new homes. But the space they create means more cria next year. We took the boys over to the far side of York and checked their new fields and stables. We spent an entire day with their new owners giving them a handling and husbandry course so we knew they would be able to keep them both in the luxury to which they were accustomed. Once in their new field they went straight to the feed bucket and the hay nets and finally a glance at us as if to say “Are you still here?” We have just completed the winter herd health checks on the entire farm, everything checked, alpacas, chickens and the cats. All came through the checks with a clean bill of health with some pedicure and haircuts for the alpacas.

The new teddy bears from Peru arrived with no toy certification so we had to make the hard decision to send some for teddy testing. It’s rather gruesome with the samples being subjected to all kinds of teddy torture. Hopefully the sacrifice of the few will ensure the safety of the rest! As soon as we have the certificates they will be for sale on the website. We can tell the weather has started to turn colder as the alpaca sock orders have increased, especially our new range in natural colours of charcoal, silver grey and brown. You can see all our range at www.CountyAlpacas.co.uk Till next month! Shaun and Julie

It’s been a fairly easy year as there has been little rain all summer. This has been great for the alpacas as their natural habitat in Peru is a dry high cold desert, very similar to summer in the Ryburn Valley! However, the rain is making a comeback and the alpacas will be spending more time inside, the barn and shelters have all been made ready for them.

Recipe - Very moist Coffee & Walnut cake

This is coffee and walnut cake reinvented. I have found on occasions that this cake can be dry and not very well flavoured – well this is the exception. It is moist, full of flavour and is always a very popular afternoon treat. Ingredients: 25g Instant coffee powder 120g Boiling water 200g Unsalted butter 80g Milk 550g Castor sugar 120g Finely chopped walnut 450g SR flour 1.5 tsp Baking powder 6 eggs Method: Essentially this is a very easy cake to make. Put the boiling water in a mixing bowl and add the coffee

powder. Add the butter and mix in, then add the sugar, milk and eggs then sieve in the flour and baking powder. Finally, add the chopped walnuts and mix thoroughly. Preheat your oven to 170oC and line two or three 23cm cake tins – depending on how many layers you wish to have. Pour the mix into the prepared cake tins and bake for about 20-25 minutes, depending on whether you have used two or three tins. Remove from the tins after 5 minutes and transfer to a cooling rack. When cool, ice with a butter cream. Mix 100g butter with 2 tbsp coffee essence and then slowly stir in the icing sugar until you reach the desired consistency. Spread the icing on each layer and place walnuts on the top. Have a large slice and enjoy!

The Ancient Soyland Legacy Twice a year we have a mention in the Go Local! community pages about money being available from the ancient Parish of Soyland (which covers most of the current Ripponden Parish) for those in need. I have often wondered what this was about and how it originated, so this month Jean Akroyd tells us a bit more… “The name, Soyland Charities was amalgamated by the Charity Commission on 24 January 1956 and actually comprises six benefactors, dating back, in part, almost three hundred years. The first of the six is James Riley and his charity was founded by a Will dated 6 May 1723. The other benefactors are Richard Hirstwood, Roger Peel, Edward Navey, Elkanah Hoyle and the charity known as Bentley’s Gift. The legacy of each individual was in the form of a sum of money to be invested in perpetuity for the relief of the poor in the ancient parish of Soyland. Similar organisations were set up in Barkisland and Rishworth but they no longer exist. The administration of Soyland Charities is managed by seven Trustees. These are: One ex-officio Trustee, who is usually the Vicar of the Ecclesiastical Parish of St Bartholomew’s Church, Ripponden with St John’s Church, Rishworth; two Representative Trustees, members of the Parish Council, and originally the Urban District Council of Ripponden, and appointed by the Council.

appointed by the Trustees to officiate at meetings and record the votes. In the past, applications were often made for gifts of bedding, clothing, food, fuel and furniture. Gifts of money were made to relieve sickness, infirmity or distress. In the present day, most applications come from students requesting help to purchase text books, or the tools of their trade perhaps from apprentices or similar. However, help may also be given to alleviate the cost of travelling expenses to and from hospital. Applications are usually discussed and decided upon at either of the two meetings, held in May and November. The Trustees of the charity are keen to ensure that people are aware that Soyland Charity exists and meets twice each year to consider applications for grants. Any persons in need, residing in the ancient parish of Soyland, which includes most of Ripponden, are eligible to apply although recurring grants cannot be made.” Letters of application may be made to the Vicar at Ripponden Vicarage, or to the Honorary Clerk, Mrs Jean Mallinson Akroyd at 63 Rishworth Mill, Rishworth HX6 4RZ.

The Trustees are committed to hold at least two meetings each year. Special meetings may be called if any urgent matters arise. Three Trustees are essential and constitute a quorum. An Honorary Clerk is

Irving Berlin’s White Christmas When Halifax Light Opera Society stages its next musical production at the Victoria Theatre, Halifax in late November, audiences will be able to singalong to the world’s most popular ‘popular’ song. For the society is staging Irving Berlin’s ‘White Christmas’ just in time to give everyone a festive glow. The stage show is based on the film starring Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye and Rosemary Clooney. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the version sung by Bing Crosby is the best-selling single of all time, with estimated sales in excess of 50 million copies worldwide.

Following its prominence in the film Holiday Inn, the composition won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1942. The version most often heard today is not the original 1942 Crosby recording, as the master had become damaged due to frequent use. Crosby re-recorded the track on March 18, 1947. The success of the song “White Christmas” eventually led to the second film based on the song.

It was released on July 30, 1942, as part of an album of six songs from the film Holiday Inn. The song initially performed poorly but by the end of October 1942, however, “White Christmas” topped the “Your Hit Parade” chart.

Halifax Light Opera Society will be performing the stage show developed only a few years ago. It is a real coup for the society as the show travels around in turn at Christmas time to major centres and this year will also open in the West End.

Rotary Tree of Lights The Ash tree in the car park of the Village restaurant in Sowerby Bridge is the centre of the latest Rotary local community project in our area. The tree will be dressed with lights from Friday 14th November at 6pm until Twelfth Night. The Rotary Club of Sowerby Bridge’s Tree of Lights is a reminder of light and hope since it is often at Christmas that we most miss our dearly departed loved ones. Hazel Brindle, one of the organising Rotarians, suffered such a loss last year when her nephew died of a heart attack aged 38 leaving a wife and family behind. If a defibrillator was at hand it might have been a different story. Reports constantly state that the provision of defibrillators in public places is an effective tool in saving lives. You can purchase a light for the tree by dedicating a minimum donation of £5. From this, the project aims to buy a defibrillator for Sowerby Bridge. Every pound raised through the Tree of Lights will go towards

purchasing and installing a defibrillator on the main thoroughfare. If a person collapses with a sudden cardiac arrest anyone can access the defibrillator by dialing 999. A code is given for removing the defibrillator from its secure casing and the machine itself gives instructions on how to use it. Forms can be downloaded from www.rotarysowerbybridge.org or obtained from the following: DeliBelge, The Village Restaurant and Trinkette. Completed dedications can be handed in at these venues or posted to Rotary Club, c/o Sportsmans Inn, Rochdale Road, Greetland, HX4 8PL. This is the first year that the Rotary Club of Sowerby Bridge have organised “The Tree of Lights” and President Barry Small hopes the tree will bring joy and comfort to all who see it.

Gardening - Take Your Seats Please As a gardener, being bound by the Horticultural Hippocratic Oath means that I am destined for a life where I am unable to just sit and enjoy the beauty of either my or someone else’s creation – I’m always “on duty” to give advice or treat sick and ailing gardens! But for everyone else, unencumbered by this annoying affliction, planning where you are going to do your entertaining and enjoy some al fresco dining, or simply providing somewhere to park your bottom after a hard day’s graft, is an important consideration. For the majority of us, this normally constitutes a paved (or decked) patio area adjacent to the house so we can step out the back door and reach a chair without spilling too much of our gin and tonic. Even so, sun worshipers will naturally migrate to the sunniest and hottest spot in the garden and, obviously, a shady retreat is essential for the rest of us! The next bit is the fun bit - deciding what on earth you’re going to sit on – and the world really is your oyster. Traditionally, there are those ubiquitous teak (from “managed sources” of course!) patio sets that gently mature (otherwise known as decay!)

over the years to something akin to driftwood, unless you give them an annual libation of oil or some other kind of preservative. Alternatively, their aluminium counterparts come in an amazing array of styles and prices. At this point I must offer a word of advice – don’t scrimp on the size of your seating area or else, just as in the rest of your house, you will always overcrowd the space and will quickly regret not splashing out on something a bit more man-sized in the first place.

Gardening - Take Your Seats Please

Cont. from P88

Chairs slipping off the edge of the paving and tipping your guests and their plates of food into the flower borders may be highly amusing at the time but, when your grandma ends up impaled on the Berberis, maybe it’s time to re-consider things! Personally I like to see some free thinking come into play when it comes to the actual seats. If you have a small courtyard, it makes a lot of sense to incorporate features such as raised planting beds into seats, incorporating a lovely mix of herbs and flowers in the adjoining beds to create an aromatic paradise. Or, if you prefer something more contemporary, how about something like this striking curved bench we designed and built as part of a smart modern garden? (see photo) This is perfect if you don’t want to faff about with messy furniture cluttering up the patio and would rather have something which is integral to and enhances the rest of the garden design – painting it white does just that!

Rightly popular these days are more “organic” arrangements using chunky cubes of wood in various sizes and, my particular favourite, gabions filled with something unusual like broken terracotta pots and given a hardwood lid to make a stunning and useful garden feature. Dotted around the garden in strategic locations, they not only look great but also offer a brilliant, eco-friendly solution to providing extra habitats for a whole range of wildlife that will enjoy nestling in all the crevices. Lastly, and arguably most importantly, those of a romantic nature should look no further than the Love Seat – a curling ‘S’ shaped two seater based on the yin and yang symbol – a perfect spot to share a glass of bubbly and celebrate important events in your life such as wedding anniversaries!! Jonathan Wild Gardener and Old Romantic (see I didn’t forget!)

For a FREE quotation call Robert on 0787 948 5657 or John on 0792 334 4045 www.benchmarkbuilders.co A friendly and reliable service. Portfolios and References available.

Benchmarking in the Ryburn Valley Ancient Benchmarks like this are to be found on structures throughout the Ryburn Valley The term benchmark, originates from the marks chiselled into stone structures, into which an angle-iron could be placed to form a "bench" for a levelling rod, thus ensuring it could be accurately repositioned to calculate the height above sea level relevant to other nearby benchmarked datum lines. `The benchmark’ is also a professionally accepted term for determining or measuring the quality of standards and performance.

Even though technology has overtaken levelling rods, new benchmarks are still appearing on buildings in our area, as a trademark of the quality standards of a local building company. “Our standards are high and our customers are pleased for us to carve our own discrete benchmark on completion of our new stonework, so look out for more of them appearing” says Robert Gear of Ryburn’s Benchmark Builders.

What our customers say... “We employed RJD, now Benchmark Builders to complete an extension to our property and were delighted with their work. They were hardworking, industrious and extremely conscientious, their timekeeping exemplary and their honesty such that we gave them full access to our home whilst we were absent. Their standard of work is of the highest quality and we would be happy for any prospective clients to come to our property to view the work for themselves.” Barry and Ann Birkby Huddersfield

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Manager Andy Routledge feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps.

Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Ripponden, Rishworth, Barkisland, Norland, Sowerby, Mill Bank, Soyland & Sowerby Bridge areas & Andy is finding that his

approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve

done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Andy a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!
