Recipe - Moules Marinieres This Normandy classic is one of the simplest dishes around and so easy to make, and the flavours you get with fresh mussels are second to none! To serve 4 as a lunch Ingredients 1.2 kg Fresh mussels – the freshest you can find 50 ml Dry white wine 1 tbsp unsalted butter 1 small onion, finely chopped 2 fresh bay leaves 4 sprigs thyme 2 tbsp whipping cream 2 tbsp chopped fresh parsley Method: Wash the mussels and remove the beards and any barnacles – they are easily chipped off with a palette knife. Throw away any open

mussels if they don’t close when gently tapped on a surface. Heat a large, deep pan and add the butter, onion, thyme and bay leaves. Crank the heat right up and stir for 20-30 seconds then add the cream and mussels. Cover with a lid for 2-3 minutes then stir in the chopped parsley. No extra salt is needed as the mussels season the dish perfectly. Serve in large bowls with crusty bread and butter to mop up the delectable juices. Don’t eat any mussels that don’t open and have a large bowl in the centre of the table for discarded shells. A winner every time!

The Rotary Navigation Walk 2014 Tesco’s Car Park, Cleckheaton and The Navigation Inn, Horbury.

Most of us know what a fabulous role our local hospices play in local lives when people need them most. So it is wonderful to see local Rotary Clubs have organised the Navigation Walk 2014 on Sunday 6th April 2014 to raise money for the hospices. Last year over £16,000 was raised equally for Overgate Hospice, Kirkwood Hospice, Wakefield Hospice and the Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice. The route walk is almost 20 miles and follows the Calder and Hebble Navigation between Horbury (Navigation Inn Calder Grove) and The Wharf at Sowerby Bridge, with a side route along the Spen Valley Greenway from Cleckheaton. Participants do not have to do the full walk and can choose to walk from any two points along the route.

Walkers are asked when registering to indicate which locations they would like to start and finish at so suitable arrangements can be made. Transport to your starting point can be organised if you register before 25th March. Hard copy Registration Forms may be downloaded from www. rotarynavigation.co.uk and can also be requested by telephoning 01924 279836. Maybe this local walk alongside the canals is the charity event you will do this year for local charities?

The Start and Finish Points will be: The Wharf, Sowerby Bridge; The Barge and Barrel, Elland; Bethel Street Car Park, Brighouse; The Navigation Tavern, Mirfield; The Ponderosa, Heckmondwike;

RSPCA Halifax/Huddersfield & District Go Local’s Pet of the Month Appeal PANTHER

Panther is a 3 year old Doberman who came to the centre with Ruby, due to their owners ill health. Panther is a friendly giddy boy who loves to be around people. Panther loves to play and is also working on his basic commands which he would need to continue in his new home. Panther would be better suited to older children as he has never lived with them and can get giddy some times. Panther is unsure how

to reacted to another dog as he has only ever seen Ruby the dog he lived with, so he would need some work in his new home. If you could offer Panther a loving home please call into see him. Jess who featured in the last edition has now been reserved.

Technology

What next for display screens Looking back just 10 years, the pace of change in the display screens that we use to watch TV or use our computers has been remarkable. Back in 2003, there had been some developments, flatter squarer tubes and widescreens to name two, but the majority of display screens used the same technology, the cathode ray tube. Cathode ray tubes had some big disadvantages, the display was very deep, the glass tube was very heavy, manufacturing was expensive and there were limits on the size of the screen in terms of picture quality. Plasma display screens were becoming increasingly available but were prohibitively expensive. A plasma screen uses the same technology as fluorescent lighting. This results in displays that are very bright, have a high contrast level, a high viewing angle and less motion blur. Plasma screens are still commonplace but prices remain relatively high and TVs and computer monitors are now dominated by LCD displays. These use liquid crystals that change configuration when an electric current is passed through them. Liquid crystals to not emit light so the display has to be backlit. LCD displays have been widespread since the 90s – the earliest laptops used them. They have a number of advantages, they are slim, lightweight and use very little electricity making them ideal for mobile devices like laptops. They are also extremely cheap to produce; that is why it is possible to buy a 32” TV for well under £200 these days. The picture quality is not as good as a plasma screen but is fine for the majority of TV viewers and computer users. The next major development was the interactive touchscreen, which allows the display to become the user interface rather than a mouse, keyboard or remote control. Although touchscreens have been around in one form or another since the 80s, they really came into widespread use in the late 2000s. It is the ready availability of cheap touchscreens that has driven the exponential growth in mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet

computers over the last five years. Now touchscreens are everywhere; they are commonplace in car dashboards, gaming devices, ATMs, satnavs and much more besides. They haven’t really taken off in televisions, though, mainly because the viewer is some way back from the screen. Most touchscreens are LCD displays with a capacitive coating that reacts to the different conductivity of human skin. Visual display screens continue to develop at a white hot pace. Already there is a flexible screen TV which allows viewers to curve the screen if there are a lot of people in the room so everyone gets a good view. I’d question the commercial viability of such a device, but you never know. The next big thing is visual displays that are integrated within a pane of glass. This is part of the technology behind Google glass, the current leader of the pack in wearable tech. The display is integrated into a corner of one lens in a pair of spectacles. The liquid crystals are activated by firing a tiny projector at them to change their configuration. Teams of boffins at several electronics giants are working on display screens that are part of a window sized sheet of glass. There are numerous applications for such a product, such as a heads up display in cars or aircraft, and this device could completely revolutionise the humble shop window display. However, integrated glass displays are likely to be expensive technology for some time to come. At the other end of the scale, scientists have just developed a stick on screen that has the potential to turn any sheet of glass into a moving image display. The screen uses nanoparticles in a liquid polymer. Because only tiny quantities of the nanoparticles are required, it is very cheap to produce. There’s just one problem, the particles can only reflect blue light so the screen is mono-colour at the moment. But watch this space! Graham Iek IT Consultant

Travel

Dublin – It’s all about the craic I know that long weekends in Dublin are supposed to be all about gangs of stag weekending blokes drinking Guinness until it comes out of their ears, but I’ve never heard anyone have a bad word to say about the place. So when my husband suggested a long weekend away to celebrate my birthday at the end January, Dublin was the first destination that came to mind. We flew Ryanair, naturally, and actually they were nowhere near as bad as they are painted; it’s such a short flight from East Midlands airport that I didn’t have time to blow all my spending money on glasses of wine at exorbitant prices. We breezed through Dublin’s quiet and surprisingly friendly airport and caught the bus into the city centre which only takes 15 minutes. We were staying at the Jurys Inn on Parnell Street, just north of the river. The hotel was much the same as any other Jurys Inn but it had a great location slap bang in the middle of the city. Once we’d checked in, we went for a wander. The centre of Dublin is actually very small and it’s easy to just walk wherever you want to go. All the buildings seem to be old and the city is remarkably clear of any skyscrapers. Inevitably, it didn’t take long to find a pub, a cosy old gin palace of a place which was already packed with customers at midday. I only really drink wine but my husband tucked into a couple of pints of Guinness with great gusto. He claims proper Irish Guinness is much better than the stuff they serve in the UK, but I’ll take his word for it. One of the less known tourist attractions in Dublin is Butlers Chocolate Factory which is out near the airport just north of the city. We retraced our steps to Clonshaugh; the tour was actually very interesting and, of course, there were plenty of yummy chocolates to try. Our evening meal was in a Pizza Hut that I’d spied on our earlier outing into the city centre. A couple of quiet drinks and I was ready for bed; it had been a long day.

immerse ourselves in the city’s famous drinking culture too early so we paid a trip to Dublin Zoo. It was very nice as zoos go, but a bit chilly for my tastes. This meant that it was mid-afternoon by the time we’d made our way across the Liffey and into Temple Bar. Most of the bars, pubs and clubs are located just south of the river around the university. We started at the Bar With no Name, a very chilled kind of a place and moved on to a dizzy procession of pubs and bars. Everyone was very friendly and up for a good time; the famous Dublin Craic is alive and well. At some stage during the evening, we watched a live band and wound up in a club called The Pod. We staggered the thankfully short distance back to the hotel in the early hours of the morning. After an even longer lie in on Sunday morning, we made the pilgrimage to the Guinness Storehouse. This is actually a self guided exhibition of the history of the famous stout. You wind your way up six storeys of the building, which is shaped like a pint of Guinness, before reaching the Gravity Bar at the top where we had a much needed hair of the dog. Afterwards we enjoyed an excellent all day breakfast and then launched into a repeat performance of the day before. Unable to face another drink on the final day, we paid a visit to Grafton Street instead. This is Dublin’s equivalent to Oxford Street but much nicer, with plenty of individual boutiques. Eventually, exhausted by the Craic, we caught the bus back to the airport and made our weary way home. Katherine Underhill

The following morning, which started with a seriously long lie in, was a Saturday. We didn’t want to

The Grand Macmillan Ball A host of celebrities are supporting a prestigious charity ball taking place in Calderdale later this year. The Grand Macmillan Ball takes place at Berties Banqueting Rooms, Elland, on Friday, May 2 and organisers are hoping it will raise at least £10,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support. The ball is the brainchild of businessman Dave Molloy of Shelf, who runs his own events company, Eventsline Entertainment. The 40-year-old former rugby player has worked with some of the best known charities in the UK along with many famous faces from the world of TV and sport. Helping him organise the event are journalist and broadcaster, Christa Ackroyd a former presenter of BBC1’s Look North; journalist and PR executive Diane Crabtree who lives in Barkisland, and Louise Bonnar who is business development manager at Berties.

Dave and Christa will be comperes on the night and joined on stage by The International Party Doctors and a host of other singers and entertainers. Table magicians will work the room and there will be a pop-up photo booth for those who want lasting memories of their evening. There will also be a raffle, silent auction and plenty of surprises. Tickets are £50 and include a welcome drink and canapés, a three-course meal with coffee and instead of a red carpet, a green one. Christa urged local companies and individuals to get behind the ball to make it a huge success and promised it would be a night to remember. “It’s about making a difference and helping raise lots of money for a great cause but we want people to have fun too and talk about it for months to come.”

Le Tour de France

Elland update for March The world’s biggest sporting event, the Tour de France comes through Greetland, West Vale and Elland on Sunday 6th July. It is a momentous event for the area and many preparations are being made to ensure that the event is one to remember for everyone. You can begin to get involved as soon as the 29th March when Elland Cricket Club hosts the 100 Day Dinner. For details check out the www.ellandcc. co.uk in the Tour de France section. Also follow developments on the @Le_Tour_Elland twitter account and if people want to get involved and help shape what happens over the Tour weekend they need to get in touch. There are many other activities planned over the weekend, which are beginning to bear fruit but ones we can already bring to your attention include the food and beer festival, camping at Elland Cricket Club and cycling events aplenty at Brooksbank School. More details will be available via the twitter page as decisions after the mid February public meeting are made public. Meanwhile the event itself has its route planned and will approach West Vale along the

Rochdale Road from Ripponden, turning right at the traffic lights through the centre of West Vale, then left at the Queen pub, up Queen Street and onto Hullen Edge lane and onto Blackley. It is expected to take twenty minutes for the whole caravane to pass through, although of course the pace will be quick. Surrounding roads are to be shut from as early as 7am so it is worthwhile already giving a thought as to how you will get to and from the event as well as where you want your vantage point to be. Finally thanks to Linda Waddington for this fabulous picture of the Spring Rock in Greetland with the iconic yellow bicycle hanging from its pub sign. These yellow bikes are beginning to adorn the route in our area and can be purchased from Covers 33 and from the Silk Mill Pub on Oldham Road in Ripponden for just ÂŁ5.99. If you are planning any public events for Le Tour or have any photos of local Le Tour gardens, shop fronts or houses then just send them in to: rachel@yourgolocal.co.uk More details on developments next month when Spring will officially have arrived!

The Belgians in Elland This year we commemorate the centenary of ‘The Great War’ and to promote local history Calderdale Libraries have uploaded every available issue of the Halifax Weekly Courier 1914-18 to www.calderdale.gov.uk/wtw/sources/themes/ world-war-one.html . You can also buy a CD of the newspapers at Halifax Library. This article is from the 2nd January 1915 edition:‘A couple of Belgian refugees who, with others, are resident in a house in Elizabeth Street, Elland, were married at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, West Vale, on Wednesday, by Father Kealy. In order not to attract attention the event was kept as quiet as possible but this did not prevent people assembling both in the vicinity of the house and at the church. The bridegroom is Mr. Walter Rene Albert Bogaert of Dudzeele and the bride is Miss Elodia Valeria Josephine Deconinck of Antwerp. The bride was given away by her father. Prior to the outbreak of the war the bridegroom followed the calling of a sculptor. Motor-cars were placed at the disposal of the couple by Councillor J.S. Smithies and Mr James Garnett. Councillor Sam Lumb, Chairman of Elland Council, and Mr P.H. Whitwam, the town surveyor, were present and acted as witnesses. It had been the intention of the young couple to be married in Antwerp last September but the invasion by the Germans upset all their arrangements and instead of a wedding feast they were glad to escape to England. So hurried was their flight that many valuable belongings were left behind including Miss Deconinck’s wedding dress. The wedding service was conducted in English. The bride was smartly attired in a blue dress and wore a large fur over her shoulders. There was no elaborate ceremony. Upon return to Elland the couple were photographed and after a repast they were conveyed by motor-car to Leeds and presented to Mr. Balfour, the Belgian consul.’ The Ellanders in Belgium Skip forward to 1936 and this article features in the Elland Echo:‘A part of 25 boys of Grace Ramsden’s School, returned home on Saturday after an instructive motor-coach tour of Belgium, Holland & Germany. The party left Elland on June 6 by train to Dover.

Many of the party thought the continental scenery monotonous but were recompensed by the ferry journeys and the bright colours of the houses. Wednesday was spent journeying to Brussels. Next morning the party inspected the city, most of them buying lace. Friday saw the party on the beach or buying souvenirs to take home. Before the boys left Belgium, a team met an eleven of Belgian boys in a soccer match and the Elland lads were successful, winning by four goals to two.’ We have many local stories from the 1936 Echo on CD, which is available (for a small donation) at our History Room in Elland Library. Home Improvements Captivating Kitchens Of all the rooms in the home, the kitchen is the one that can add most value, both to the price of your house and your lifestyle. But get it wrong and you will pour money down the drain. Here’s how to get the most from your cash. Fickle Fashion In recent years ultra-sleek, minimalist, high gloss kitchens have been all the rage, yet followers of trends in interiors will note that we’ve been here before… back in the 70s. Shaker style doors are an evergreen classic and it’s worth remembering that quality never goes out of fashion. If you don’t want something that will look terminally dated in four years’ time, go for an understated look. Polished concrete worktops might look great on Grand Designs but they will be a lot less appealing to your home’s next owner. Complete new kitchen or just a makeover? It is often said that you can spend as much money as you like on a kitchen and it’s not unusual for a new kitchen to cost in excess of £20k. However, virtually all kitchens have the same basic construction. There are carcasses made of chipboard or laminate plywood that contain the cupboards or draw units, with the doors and draw fronts attached via hinges. Doors tend to be made of either vinyl covered MDF or solid wood finished with varnish or painted. If you are not changing the basic kitchen layout and the carcasses are in good condition, it is a lot cheaper to change the doors and worktops than replace the entire kitchen. Style over substance If you watch property shows or read glossy interiors magazines, it’s easy to get carried away by the incredibly stylish kitchens you see. It’s important to remember that the kitchen is primarily a room that you cook in. The oven, sink and fridge should be laid out in a triangle and be no more 4 metres from each other. Butcher’s block work surfaces look great and are very practical but they also require a lot of maintenance. Granite provides

that luxury touch but requires reinforced base units and is very efficient at smashing crockery. An integrated under counter fridge is very tidy but you need to consider if it has enough space to meet your needs. When designing your kitchen, how it functions as a workspace for you should be your primary consideration, but it should still be as stylish as possible. Appliances The two most important appliances in the kitchen are the fridge and the cooker. The fridge should first and foremost be big enough to meet the needs of your family and it should be centrally located. With the cooker, there are lots of options to consider. You can have a free standing cooker or range cooker, an under counter oven with a separate hob or the oven built into a tower unit. The choice is dictated by the layout of the kitchen. Ideally, your oven should at least have a separate grill, but two or more ovens are better still. Integrated appliances give a much sleeker look and are about the same price as free standing units. Appliances such as washing machines, tumble driers and freezers can be located elsewhere, such as a utility room if possible. This will free up cupboard space in the kitchen. Choosing a supplier Using a one stop supplier to provide the units, install the kitchen and do the tiling and flooring makes a lot of sense. They can generally offer a broad range of units and take away the hassle of finding different tradespeople for the installation work. However, it’s worth shopping around as prices can vary widely. You can save money by buying the kitchen units and appliances separately and then contracting your own tradespeople but this is a lot more hassle. Remember that gas appliances must be installed by a Gas Safe registered plumber and any appliances that don’t simply plug in are installed by a Part P qualified electrician.

Property - Does energy efficiency improve the price of your home?

Energy prices are a political hot potato at the moment, but does the rating on your Energy Performance Certificate have a bearing on the value of your home? Research conducted by Cambridge University on behalf of the department of energy and climate change suggests that it does. The report, released last year, concluded that similar houses in the same location saw a price premium directly linked to their energy efficiency. Compared to a property with a G rating, one with an A/B rating could expect to be sold for 14% more. Based on my experience, I’d take this with a pinch of salt. Most potential buyers never even look at the EPC and it is rare indeed for a buyer to ask to see recent energy bills, even for a property they have put an offer in on. There are other things to consider too. Any house built in the last few years will be very energy efficient; it has to be to comply with building regulations. Generally, the older a house, the less energy efficient it is.

The main things that influence price are location, size, type of property and its condition. That last factor probably holds the key to the researchers’ conclusion. To achieve only a G rating, a property would have to be old and in very poor condition. To raise it to even a C rating,, the boiler and central heating system would have to be replaced, the loft insulated, windows and doors replaced with double glazed, draft proof, insulated ones and some sort of floor insulation would probably be required. These are all the sort of things that get done when a property is completely renovated. The value of a renovated property is invariably much higher than a run down one; to be honest, I’m surprised they only found a price differential of 14%. For buyers to whom energy efficiency is a priority when choosing a house, I’d suggest looking only at modern properties to be a good first step.
