Car Parking charge update Update from your local Ryburn Conservative Ward Councillors
At Budget Council in February the Budget passed by Council from the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats removed the car parking charges from the car park from the 1st April 2014. Despite this the Labour administration has at the time of writing still not followed the wishes of Council and instructed officers to remove the charges. We are being advised that processes have to be done with a new Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) before these charges can be removed. In the meantime people have to pay and enforcement officers are still patrolling and issuing fines. Also the knock on effect is that this means the half hour parking zone on Oldham Road is also being patrolled and fines being applied. The Ryburn Ward Councillors are appalled by this action.
The budget put in the income targets which had been identified by officers to begin at the 1st April so we believe that there is nothing to prevent the machines being covered whilst this TRO is being sought. We do not believe that there is any legislation preventing a council from not charging. The machines could be covered and the Ward Councillors are actively pursuing this. Are the Labour Administration and in particular Councillor Barry Collins playing politics with us? The local elections are almost here and if Labour get an overall majority on the council they will be able to overturn the budget decision and keep the charges in place. If you want to have free parking in Ripponden please use your vote to prevent Labour practising dirty tricks politics.

Le Tour Update, May
- it’s getting wheely close! As preparations for the Tour de France escalate it is lovely to see the number of yellow bikes steadily increasing around the area. The prize for the biggest one certainly would go to Rishworth School for their fantastic effort. It’s not too late to get your yellow bike, they’re on sale via the Le Tour Ripponden website and from Covers 33/Silk Mill in Ripponden. The Le Tour Ripponden website has a lot of useful info on: www.letourripponden.co.uk – with details of campsites, where to eat and park and TdF merchandise. Local businesses are showcasing their TdF related products ranging from stickers to T-shirts, polo shirts and hoodies. Toll House jewellers have also launched a range of lovely jewellery this month (see P7). To get you in the mood, there will be a stall at the next Totally Locally Sowerby Bridge market on Sunday May 18th (see P6 for ad). Everyone who sells through Le Tour Ripponden is donating 15% of the purchase prices to two local causes: Ripponden School PTFA and Ravenscliffe School Spring Hall Project. There is going to be a strong demand for parking places on the day, so it’s best to decide early how you’re going to get to your view point (unless you live on the route!) and where you’re going to park? If anyone is thinking of holding a temporary car park please get in touch with Le Tour Ripponden and your details will be added to the website (corinne@2plus2bookkeeping.co.uk). Roads will be closed from around 7am on the day so if you live within a mile of the route, walking would be a good option. Some organised viewing points are going to be at the Stones Church where there will be a community party; at St Bartholomew’s Church; within Millfold Recreation area and at the top of Ripponden Bank, where the Fleece will have a big screen. St Bartholomew’s Church are holding a number of events to accommodate visitors and raise much needed funds for the church. The church will be open from Mon 30th -Wed 2nd July. On Thursday 3rd until Saturday 5th a Flower Festival is being held from
10.30 until 5pm. Don’t forget the Calderdale Big Band Concert at 7.30pm on Friday 4th July. On the Sunday, the church will be open all day with market stalls in the grounds. If you can help with donations for the tuck shop or can bake a cake then please contact Catherine Hankinson at holkerlea@yahoo.co.uk If you are holding a public event then please let both Go Local! and Le Tour Ripponden know and we’ll publicise it for free.
It promises to be a fabulous day. Let’s hope the weather matches our efforts. Even the local birdlife are getting into the act as this wonderful picture supplied by John and Sylvia Hardy of Scammonden shows! More updates next month.
TOUR DE FRANCE WEEKEND AT MILLFOLD.

Race the North Dragons
- Charity Dragon Boat Race ‘Race the North Dragons’ is a spectacular charity dragon boat racing event to be held at Scammonden Water Sailing Club, Huddersfield on Saturday 21st June. Dragon Boat racing originated in China over 2000 years ago and is steeped in magical myth and mystery. Each Dragon boat is 12 metres long, adorned with an ornate dragons head and tail, a flag, and a drum! The dragon boats require teams of twelve to fifteen determined paddlers and a keen drummer. The goal is to paddle the team to victory by winning timed races throughout the day. The three fastest teams will qualify for the Grand Race Final. We are now recruiting teams and event sponsors. THE EVENT The day starts with team registration at 9am and culminates in the Grand Race Final at approximately 3.30pm. Throughout the day there will be fun and entertainment for all the family. Dragon boat race heats are run throughout the day over a race course distance of 200 metres. Each team in the event is given a guaranteed three timed races (weather permitting). Each team’s single best time over their three races is used to qualify the fastest teams into the final race.

Wind and Hot Air – a Physicist’s perspective by Professor of Physics at the University of Huddersfield, Bob Cywinski
Three 99.5m high turbines are proposed for the Scammonden skyline. This month we give the opinion of an internationally respected scientist on this issue that is dividing communities in Calderdale and elsewhere. “In terms of local planning issues there are few issues more controversial than wind turbines and wind farm projects. Both proposers and protesters claim they are protecting the environment – the former by reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions that contribute to climate change and the latter by saving the landscape and ecology of our wild places from industrial scale developments. This has set neighbour against neighbour in heated battles that can last for months or even years. The drive to build industrial scale wind farms in some of our country’s most beautiful and unspoiled areas is perhaps often driven not by a deep understanding of energy provision or climate change, but by the baser instincts of guilt or greed: Guilt that we are “destroying the planet” and greed for the generous subsidies and feed-in tariffs that are provided by a deeply flawed national energy policy. One of the central claims of the pro-wind lobby is that wind turbines will reduce the amount of climatechanging CO2 that we pump into the atmosphere. So it’s useful to take an unbiased mathematical approach to how much of a contribution to “saving the planet” a wind turbine might make and then leave you, the reader, to decide whether this is worth the detrimental effects a development has on wildlife, archaeology, visual amenity and leisure in a unspoilt area. Using official figures provided by the Government’s Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) and RenewableUK (the UK’s leading renewable energy trade association), a typical 100m high 2MW turbine could produce up to 17.5 million kilo Watt hour (kWh) of electricity per year. The corresponding saving in CO2 emissions is an impressive 2000 metric tonnes. However, this is a generous estimate as it assumes a turbine load factor of 27% (the average for both offshore and onshore wind) and it does not take into account the CO2
produced by the necessary back-up generation for this intermittent energy source, nor that resulting from electricity actually drawn from the grid to power the turbines. Let us look at this CO2 saving of 2 thousand tonnes per year in perspective: The UK’s national emissions of CO2 are 553 million tonnes per year (1.5% of total global emissions). So, a large industrial 2MW turbine will save less than 4 parts in one million of the UK’s total. Or to put it another way, we would need almost 3000 of these 2MW turbines to save just 1% of the UK’s current annual carbon emissions. More worryingly the UK has agreed to reducing CO2 emissions by 394 million tonnes per year by 2050. To meet this target with wind power would require almost 200 thousand 2MW turbines. Such a development would occupy 97 thousand square kilometres, or the equivalent of the whole of the UK coastline to a depth of 5km. Clearly the task of providing clean efficient and reliable energy that we currently face is enormous. Can we do it with wind power? The answer is clearly no. Wind does have a part to play in the energy mix of the UK, but a more coherent and regulated development of wind energy is needed. No technology is in itself good or bad, and wind energy is no exception, but it is how and where that technology is deployed that needs both careful thought and independent scrutiny. Both pro-wind and anti-wind lobbyists, local planners, politicians, and you, the general public, should really address the question of whether piecemeal industrial scale wind developments that save only a few parts per million of the country’s greenhouse gas emissions are really worth the sacrifice of our local landscapes, or whether such developments contribute far too little at far too high an environmental price. To answer this question we really need a measured debate not the misplaced zeal, fanatical rhetoric and the fundamental misunderstanding of the scale of the problem and its potential solutions that we have at the moment.”

Recipe - Chicken Caesar Salad This is one of the classic salads; it was actually invented in Mexico by a chef named Caesar! The addition of chicken turns it into a great light lunch. It is one of my favourite salads and is often on my own restaurant’s menu at lunch – sometimes with home smoked chicken. Ingredients: 2 cooked chicken breasts 2 x Baby gem lettuce or 1 x Romaine lettuce 150g Mayonnaise 8 anchovies 2 tbsp Worcester sauce 100g grated parmesan plus extra for shaving 2 cloves garlic Juice of 1 lemon Salt & pepper Croutons – cube stale bread and drizzle with oil, season and bake in an oven at about 150C until golden and crunchy
Method: Place the mayonnaise, garlic, anchovies, Worcester sauce, grated parmesan and half of the lemon juice in a food processor. Blend until smooth. Taste and adjust with the remaining lemon juice, salt and pepper. Cut the root end of the lettuce off and separate the leaves; leave out any soft outer leaves and use only the more yellow inner leaves which are crunchy and sweeter. Place the leaves in a mixing bowl and spoon in as much sauce as you like to coat the leaves – toss them in the bowl until coated. Slice the chicken and warm in an oven for 2-3 minutes. Place the coated leaves in a serving bowl and sprinkle the croutons over. Then add the strips of chicken, the anchovies and shave extra parmesan over the top.

Making friends A parent’s guide to young children’s socialising We all need friends in our lives to share our happiness, to comfort us and to learn from. We all acknowledge that ours would be a lonely existence without companionship and a friendly smile to brighten our days. Young children are no different; they delight in sharing their discoveries and achievements with their peers. Young babies grow excited when around other babies, holding eye contact and mimicking facial expression. The relationships that children form in the early years are the building blocks of friendship. As adults we must support them to gain confidence in their early social relationships, teaching them values that they will carry through their lives.
can teach them that friends share or take turns and are kind to each other. When looking for nurseries for your child consider how they support young children to build friendships. A good nursery will be well resourced, providing enough toys, adults and experiences for children to share, minimising struggles between children. Look for a team that are good role models for children to follow. Look for adults that engage well with each other; a happy, warm and welcoming team. After all, how can we expect children to develop respectful relationships if this is not what we show to them?
Friendships are a challenge for children as well as a joy. They are learning many new rules, which can be confusing to them. Forgiveness is an important part of friendship and is a difficult thing for children to understand. To two year olds, who are mostly concerned with the here and now and how things affect them, forgiveness is an abstract concept. Two year olds do not have what we view as friendships and they will generally play alongside other children instead of with them. When children reach the age of three they begin to become more aware of others and to form relationships with other children and we can begin to teach them about emotions and how their actions can affect others.
Above all, don’t worry. Young children will make many friends throughout their journey to adulthood so don’t lose sleep if they don’t seem to have one special friend. Children’s friendships are very fluid; it’s a social whirl!
At this age, children who are playing together require supervision. You don’t necessarily have to play with them, but be in the area so you can catch a dispute before it erupts. It is easier to diffuse arguments through distraction if you can catch them right at the beginning. This is when you can set out behavioural expectations for your child. You

RSPCA Halifax/Huddersfield & District Go Local’s Pet of the Month Appeal CARLEY
Carley came into the Animal Centre via the Inspectors after there were concerns over her welfare. Carley was kept in an indoor dog crate and hardly ever walked or socialized. She has previously lived with another dog and a 12 years old child. Carley is very excitable around other dogs and forgets her manners, for this reason we would recommend that in her new home she is the only dog. Carley is a friendly but very excitable girl who loves to
play with soft toys and raggers. Carley will be an excellent project for someone who would like to do some training with their pet, she is very nice natured but lacks basic training. We are looking for a family with older children who can give Carley the loving home she deserves. Branston who featured in the April edition is still looking for a new home.
Please see: www.rspca-halifaxandhuddersfield.org.uk and for details on other pets who are also need a good home or ring 01422 365628
Calderdale Young Farmers Club raises £1,740 for Yorkshire Air Ambulance
Members of Calderdale Young Farmers Club presented Yorkshire Air Ambulance with a cheque for £1,740.53 at their weekly meeting on Monday 31st March 2014. Liz Phizackerley-Sugden, a volunteer speaker from Yorkshire Air Ambulance was invited to the club meeting at Halifax Vandals, Warley, to give a presentation on the charity, whose services have been needed by both past and present members and their families.
Calderdale Young Farmers Club is run by and for members aged between 10 and 26. Members come from a variety of backgrounds and there is no need to be involved in farming to become a young farmer. For more information on the weekly meetings, which are held on Mondays between 7.30pm and 9.00pm, please contact the Club Secretary (Kelly Medcalf – 07774 418253 – cyfc@live.co.uk)
The money has been raised over the last six months from a curry demonstration evening, raffles and more recently the clubs annual rural auction. Items were generously donated by club members and businesses from around the county, with the auction alone raising £1,450.

County Alpacas Update for May 2014 is definitely starting at a fair pace. We have already had a stand at the British Alpaca Society National Show where Julie met the winner of the alpaca fancy dress competition who came to visit our stall. Shaun has travelled to Peru to source alpaca products and we are now preparing for Wonderwool in Wales. The sun is finally shining and the fields are changing from mud to new grass. The grass is not the only thing growing; some of our alpacas have had to have their fringes trimmed as it is still a couple of months from shearing time. We have had our first herd health day of the year and “touch wood” they have all made it through the soggy winter and importantly maintained weight. A few toe nails trimmed including Jorvik’s, one of our biggest males who sits down with his legs tucked under but it was a quick job once three of us held him steady on the floor. He is now sporting pristine feet despite his complaining. Travelling to Peru was the highlight, Shaun went to an event in Lima called Peru Moda, which translates as Peru Fashion. We have sourced many different alpaca products for our new online store and shop. Our new range will include teddy bears, scarves, hats and gloves. We have commissioned our own iPad cases made from leather and alpaca yarn in a traditional manta design available in a few months. To stay up to date with our products please register on the site or like our Facebook page to ensure you don’t miss out on the chance to win a luxury prize of a pure baby alpaca scarf. Shaun also met a lot of fascinating people including traditionally dressed stall holders who were more up with technology than you might imagine. As you can see, it’s good to talk! Catch up with us on www.CountyAlpacas.co.uk or find us at County Alpacas on Facebook. Shaun and Julie

Are You At Risk From The ‘Silent Killer’? Currently in the UK, estimates suggest 16 million people suffer from high blood pressure, that is 1 in 3 women and 2 in every 5 men. Most people are unaware that they are suffering from high blood pressure because unless it’s extremely high there are no noticeable symptoms. Blood pressure is basically the pressure of blood in your blood vessels. When you have narrowed arteries, this increases the pressure of the blood and if a full or partial blockage occurs then you could suffer from heart related problems and strokes. The good news is that it can be lowered naturally by making changes to your lifestyle. For example changing your diet, exercising and losing weight, and when needed with medication. This will reduce your risk of developing heart and neurological problems that might otherwise occur if your blood pressure is left untreated. In many people, blood pressure is not checked or measured until severe damage has been done to the arteries causing heart failure or stroke. If you have a blood pressure measurement that is consistently higher than 140/90mmHg then you have high blood pressure.
pressure and it is not good. The sad part of it is virtually all of the patients I worked with had changed their diet and begun to exercise after their near death experience. If you are overweight and inactive, start now, you don’t have to be over 50 to suffer from these problems they are becoming increasingly more common across all age ranges. Start slowly at first, introduce activity in to your life for funs sake and start cutting down on fatty foods as this is one of the easiest ways to improve your diet. These are the five main changes I recommend you make: Cut down on your salt Eat more fruit and vegetables Be more active Find and reach your ideal weight or body fat % Drink alcohol only in moderate amounts Don’t forget whenever embarking on a fitness programme always seek medical guidance, as doing too much exercise too soon can be just as harmful as continuing to do none. To your health and fitness - Jago
What causes high blood Pressure? High blood pressure can be caused by many things but the main causes are associated with your lifestyle. Being overweight can increase blood pressure to dangerous levels and generally the more obese a person is, the greater the risk of high blood pressure. Smoking is another cause which can be avoided and is self inflicted. Stress and dealing with that stress is another cause. But one of the biggest causes of high blood pressure is inactivity and poor diet. A diet high in fatty foods and an over abundance of alcohol will often lead to high blood pressure due to increased fatty acids or more importantly saturated fat in the blood vessels. How can I lower my blood pressure levels? Well it’s that same old chestnut, clean up your act. After having worked with cardiac rehabilitation patients I have seen the effects of high blood

Gardening - The Scent of a Woman…. Don’t tell the wife but there’s a new girl in my life. Her name is Jaqueline and I’m head over heels – or to be precise, nose over heels. Her fragrance is something which belies description (certainly for a bloke weaned on Brut and, for special occasions, Hai Karate!), a rich cacophony of fruitiness overlaid with something bizarrely pheromonal; far too good for the queue of lucky bees eagerly awaiting their turn for a piece of the pollination action. All I can do is play gooseberry and get high on olfactory overload. I’ve no idea what volatile chemical compounds she is pumping out, but I just wish I could capture it on this page in one of those scratch n’ sniff thingamabobs or, even better, bottle it and start my very own line in sophisticated perfume; Wild No5 anybody?! Considering her inauspicious beginnings in the clearance section amongst all the other unwanted scrag ends at the garden centre, my Daphne bholua “Jaqueline Postill” has blossomed in an Eliza Doolitlesque manner, from a scrawny
undernourished twiglet into a beautifully petite shrub. She’s still a spotty teenager in plant terms; fully grown, she should double in size to approximately 2 metres but, like all Daphnes, she doesn’t do anything quickly, which is why a fully grown example isn’t cheap to buy. If you see one, though, snap it up quick and give it a prime position in some decent soil, remembering that this is a Himalayan plant that thrives in open woodland - so no hot, dry spots.

Gardening - The Scent of a Woman…. Cont. from P70
Save those for my other spring favourite – Coronilla glauca. While this one doesn’t quite possess the same X factor or refinement of Jaqueline, it’s certainly a toss-up as to which has the most beguiling fragrance – particularly with the unseasonably warm sun giving my plant a real turbo boost. It is literally smothered in bright yellow pea shaped flowers with a very strong citrusy scent – not quite on a par with Jaqueline, but still extremely passable!
quinata. This is a perfectly hardy semi-evergreen twiner which has beautifully marked, five lobed leaves. Its crowning glory is the display of fantastic deep maroon flowers that festoon the plant at this time of the year; they exude what can only be described as pure ‘eau de chocolate’ – a phenomenal scent which will have you craving for a hefty fix of Greene and Blacks! Again, don’t just plonk this one in the shade; give it a sunny spot and plenty of room to grow as it can get quite large.
A native of sun drenched Mediterranean hillsides, Coronilla will thrive in any well drained sunny spot, but put it in the shade and you will consign it to a slow death. Mine is against the house wall next to the front door where you can really appreciate its delicious nosegay and the bright and cheerful flowers.
There’s something special about plants that arouse our senses at this time of year so, certainly for anyone who needs a good kick-start to the summer, can I suggest you invite Jaqueline Postill and her friends into your garden; you might just find the elixir you need!
For chocoholics, there is one other spring flowering plant that you should definitely look into – Akebia

Local History Notes – by David Cliff Part 59 – The Booth Wood Inn
The reversion of the name of the pub at Cunning Corner to its original name of the Booth Wood Inn is to be welcomed when so many other pubs are losing their time-honoured names. The pub dates from the very early 19th century, when the new Oldham Turnpike road was built through the Boothwood ravine in 1803. It was originally called The Booth Wood Inn, also known locally as ‘The Corner’, the first known licensee being Sarah Lucey. In the 1840s, the landlord was Joseph Wrigley and he changed the name to ‘The Coach and Horses’, perhaps it was a stopping place for the stagecoaches using the turnpike road past the pub. Another name change was made in 1857 when it became The Oddfellow’s Arms’; it being the meeting place of the local chapter of that organisation. By 1874, the landlord was John Holroyd and he also ran a carting business from there. By 1881 it was known as ‘The Cunning Corner’ a name it retained for many years. It was a well known resort for meals and refreshment in the days of waggonettes and horse buses, when drives out into the countryside were popular. Large parties of day-trippers visiting the Ryburn Valley were catered for at week-ends. Dog races were also held between the pub and the Derby Bar (now the Turnpike).
At the beginning of this century the pub was renamed ‘The Old Bore’ but in 2012, under new management, it reverted to its original name of ‘The Booth Wood Inn’.
Ryburn Valley History Society Meetings The Ryburn Valley History Society meets the 2nd Monday of each month at 7.30pm at Ripponden Conservative Club. Non-members are charged £2 per visit. The next 2 meetings are: 12th May - ‘Reservoirs of the Ryburn Valley’ by Alan Watson. 9th June - ‘The Ripponden Co-operative Society’ by David Akroyd.

Car security Most modern cars are very secure due to advances in technology. However, please under no circumstances leave your car keys in the ignition and leave your car running unattended. Two reasons for this, if you leave your car running parked on a public road you commit the offence of “quitting”. You are also making your car a major target for the opportunist thief. That minute just popping back inside your house can be the difference of no car to go to work or do the school run, on your return. The second reason, is that leaving your car running will most likely invalidate your insurance, if the car gets taken. So all those premiums you have paid over the years will have been for nothing. When you go to bed at night or go out for the day and leave your car parked locked and secure, please remember to leave your car keys hidden away (not so hidden you
cannot find them later though!). Do not leave your car keys out on display in your home. Wherever you may live please be mindful and secure your car as best as you can. Ideally, your car is best locked inside a garage when not in use. Please also make sure that you do not leave anything of value in your car, such as satnavs, laptops, handbags, favourite CD’s, wallets or gym kit etc. The less you leave in your car, the less interest it is to a would be thief. The next Ward Forum for the Upper Valley is on Tuesday 15th July at Sowerby Village Primary School starting at 6.45pm. Till next month, Fiona and George PC5285 and PCSO403

Opinion - The perils and pitfalls of flood proofing your home
In a remarkable change of fortune for hard pressed homeowners, March’s budget contained some good news. If, like me, you have been flooded twice in the past 7 years and really don’t want to go through it all again, you will have been gratified to hear that up to £5000 per affected household is being made available to install flood proofing measures. This is actually a very pragmatic proposal. When you consider that the Environment Agency is proposing to spend £10 million protecting 100 houses in the Somerset Levels, £5000 per property seems like a bit of a bargain. In my own town 250 properties were flooded last summer. Assuming every single affected home claimed all of the grant, the government would be on the hook for £1.25 million. I don’t know, but I would imagine that the cost of building storage ponds, installing storm drains and raising bridges would be considerably more than that. It makes sense to protect individual properties, rather than a whole town. Making your property flood proof is actually quite straightforward in this day and age. In the case of my house, I need to protect two doors, one airbrick and a vent for the tumble dryer. Waterproof covers for the vent and airbrick cost about £30 each and flood barriers to protect the doors are widely available and cost between £200 and £400. Worst case scenario, £860 all done! But sadly, it is not that simple. All these devices must be fitted in advance of the flooding; you can’t have them in situ all the time. This wasn’t a problem in the case of the flooding along the Thames back in February; the flood wardens had 2 or 3 days to warn the householders to put the barriers in place. But in my town, it doesn’t work that way. We suffer from flash flooding following a torrential downpour; the drainage system simply can’t cope with the volume of water. Last time we flooded, a steady stream of water was pouring under our front door within ten minutes
of the first drop of rain falling; within 90 minutes the house was surrounded by three feet of water. There was no warning. Evidently, what I need are passive flood protection measures, things that are in place all the time. I’m happy to say that such things are available in the form of flood doors – shut the door and the house is watertight; that’s the theory anyway. But all is not as straightforward as it seems. To make the door watertight, 12 bars must be locked into place to seal the door tight against the frame and you have to be in the house to do this. If you’ve popped out to the shops, the house isn’t flood proof. There is also the small matter of the cost, about £6000 to fit two doors! Just to add to the fun, my house is Grade II listed, which means that I have to get Listed Building Consent before I can do anything, a process that will doubtless take a lot of time and involve jumping through many hoops. Oh, I forgot to mention, I couldn’t find a manufacturer that would actually guarantee that its doors are watertight, particularly with three feet of floodwater on the other side. It strikes me that there is an opportunity here for a British business to invest some money in design and technology to create a range of flood prevention products that are attractive, fit for purpose and competitively priced. Given that the government will be paying for many of these products through flood grants, they might have a vested interest in providing a bit of finance for such a business. Perhaps they might also consider speaking to the conservation department and smoothing the path for listed building owners who want to protect their properties from flooding, but I’m not holding my breath. Expect to see me on Dragon’s Den showcasing my patented flood proof door very soon. Howard Clemmow

Property - The Strange Appeal of Smaller Houses
It’s official; new houses are getting smaller. The average size of a new build property has fallen by 11% over the last twelve years, from 85 square meters to 76 square meters. By comparison, prices for two and three bedroom houses and flats are rising strongly. What is driving these changes?
80 or 90 square metres. If the smaller house is ÂŁ10,000 cheaper, that is the one the landlord will buy because it delivers a greater profit margin. With the Help to Buy scheme pushing more first time buyers onto the market, landlords and buyers are competing for the same limited housing stock and so pushing up prices.
The economic picture has been gloomy for house buyers over the last five or six years with falling real incomes, the lowest levels of house building since the war and mortgage lenders demanding big deposits. Factor in ever increasing energy prices and you have a generation of buyers who only want to pay for just as much space as they need and can afford to run. Few buyers are prepared to pay extra for a spare room that they will rarely use. The situation is further exacerbated by the number of buy to let landlords in the market. A three bedroom house in a given area will command the same rent whether it has a floor area of
Builders like this trend for smaller houses too. They can fit more properties on a given plot and, since the land value often represents the majority of their costs, this lowers the cost per property. Smaller houses are cheaper to build too. This means that they can sell the houses more cheaply and enjoy bigger profit margins at the same time. It seems like everyone’s a winner. A word of caution though; as the economy improves, the situation will change. Space is the ultimate luxury; given the choice, most people are prepared to pay a premium for it.

Film Review The Lego Movie
Directors: Phil Lord & Chris Miller A lot, but not all of the time, films with the word ‘movie’ in the title aren’t very good. Somebody told me once that this statement was so true because it revealed a basic lack of creativity in being unable to entitle your film without using the word ‘movie’. Whilst this is funny, it isn’t true. Perhaps a better way to explain such a phenomenon is in the order of the title. Whatever it is that the movie is about should come before ‘movie.’ The brand or the product or the genre exists, and ‘movie’ is added to the end because people like movies and movies make money. As far as The Lego Movie is concerned, I am happy to report that Phil Lord & Chris Miller appear to have really wanted to make a movie, and a fine one it is too. Set in a fantasy Lego universe where each kingdom, or genre of Lego set is kept separate in different worlds (think Wild West or Pirates), Emmett (Christ Pratt) belongs to a team of builders who work from
instructions to break down and rebuild the Lego city. He is absolutely defined by his averageness, right down to his generic Lego face, until he stumbles upon a ‘relic’ that sticks to his back and utters a prophecy: that he will be interesting and will save the universe. Lord & Miller’s script is a very precise blend of nostalgic story techniques and a postmodern awareness of cliché and convention. At one point in the film the story expands out beyond the parameters of its setting and reveals a new dynamic, a Deus ex contraption that would shatter everything that has come before it, if what were revealed were not the intellectual, philosophical and emotional core of the film. The Lego Movie is much more than a feature length advert; it is a masterpiece of creativity in its own right. James Warren My Rating H H H H
