Recipe - Raspberry & frangipane tart This frangipane tart is an absolute winner! Served warm with a little clotted cream – a little bit of heaven – and why not? Ingredients: 250g sweet pastry 200g fresh raspberries Frangipane: 225g ground almonds 225g icing sugar 225g soft unsalted butter 50g plain flour 4 whole eggs Apricot jam to glaze Method: Line a 23cm tart tin (one with a removable bottom is easiest) with sweet pastry, roll as thin as possible. Feel free to make you own pastry but readymade is absolutely fine. Rest in the fridge for 15 minutes, then place a double layer of cling film over it and fill with
uncooked rice. Place in the oven at 160oC for 20-25 minutes, take out and carefully remove the cling film and rice holding the edges, then place back in the oven for a further 5 minutes until the pastry is fully cooked. Combine all the Frangipane ingredients together in a bowl and whisk until thoroughly blended. Stir in the raspberries, reserving a few to arrange on the top as in the picture. Spoon all the mixture into the blind baked pastry case, smooth it until even and push the remaining raspberries into the surface. Bake at 160oC for 30-40 minutes until the mix is firm and golden in colour. At this point warm some smooth apricot jam in the microwave or in a pan and brush it all over to glaze. You will love every bite of this wonderful tart!

artSBridge Mini Fest On Sunday 29th June, the artSBridge group are hosting a one day mini-fest in Sowerby Bridge to tie in with Le Tour de France passing through the area the next week. The day will comprise of a “Ride of the Dead” - a zombie bike ride with different routes with varying levels of difficulty from experts to beginners on balance bikes and stabilisers and scooters. For those who don’t ride, there will be a more informal zombie “walk”. The routes will be available to view on our website and sent out post-registration, but all will convene in the Wharf area. This will be followed by street entertainment, a “Thriller” flashmob, exhibitions and performances, refreshments and a host of other activities in the town. In the evening, we will move over to Upstairs at The Works on Hollins Mill Lane, where we will have an
event comprising of cabaret, music and the première of an artSBridge film, “A Humble Station”, which examines the time spent by Branwell Brontë in the Calder Valley and the influence of the area on his life. In the weeks leading up to the festival, we are hosting workshops in various activities - arts and craft, singing, and more. For information about these, please email sowerbybridgearts@outlook.com or go to our website: www.artsbridge.org.uk Workshops and participation in the bike ride will require pre-registration. Registration forms can be acquired via email and also on our website. Walkers can simply turn up on the day. Tickets for the evening event will be available for purchase on the door. For full information follow us on Facebook and @ sowerbyarts on Twitter.

Thorpe House Revisited Twelve months ago we had had the privilege of viewing Thorpe House, Ryburn Valley’s newest hotel. Steeped in history, this magnificent Grade II listed Georgian Mansion was purchased in 1957 by Jean and Douglas Kneen as a family home for themselves and their 4 daughters and in 2012 was lovingly restored and converted into an 8 bedroomed luxury hotel by 3 of the sisters, Pam, Cyan and Carole.
afternoon tea party on Wednesday 30th April. Delivered with style and elegance with musical entertainment provided by John Wilson, a great afternoon was had by all with £400 raised for the charity.
The property stands in its own private grounds surrounded by dense woodland and large gardens that border the impressive private lake. Guests can relax in the elegantly restored lounge and have breakfast overlooking the gardens from the period dining room. Each ensuite bedroom is individual with original features, pristine linen and new modern bathrooms, everything you would want from a hotel at £95.00 per night inclusive of breakfast.
So if you’re planning a special occasion or looking for somewhere with a touch of luxury for family and friends to stay when visiting, why not contact Thorpe House on 01422 823225.
The reviews speak for them themselves with 100% of the Trip Advisor ratings classing Thorpe House as excellent or very good with comments such as “An unexpected little jewel!”, “Family get together, perfection!” “Great Hosts, Lovely Setting” & “Wedding night luxury”. Keen to find out more, I met with Pam, Cyan and Carole to see how the last 12 months have been and what plans they have for the future…. “It has been such a busy and exciting time”, explained Pam, “we pride ourselves on quality and have created close partnerships with Bertie’s Catering and Lindley Fine Wines, allowing us to offer a complete entertainment package.” Whether it’s a marquee on the lawn or an intimate meal in the period dining room, Thorpe House is the perfect setting to host a wedding reception, party or family gathering. The immaculate gardens provide an amazing backdrop for photographs! Conscious of giving back to the community, Thorpe House has played host to a number of fundraising events most recently being the Overgate Hospice

Sowerby Bridge Fire & Water starts to take light after a slow burn…
Sowerby Bridge Fire & Water (SBF&W) is an organisation whose purpose is to negotiate with the council over the transfer of the group of buildings on Hollins Mill Lane in Sowerby Bridge comprising the former fire station, council offices, swimming baths and library under the council’s Asset Transfer scheme in order to establish a community hub for the town. This would provide a vast range of activities and services for our local community. An initial submission for asset transfer was accepted and subsequently a business plan has been developed. So in 2011, Sowerby Bridge Fire and Water Ltd, a not-for-profit organisation, was formed. Since mid-2011, the group has been working towards obtaining the council’s consent to the project which was granted just a few weeks ago. Membership is being sought from local people into the organisation, so far there are over 200 people who have joined up but more are still needed. There is also an Action group of about 40 all raring to get involved in the hard work ahead! Sowerby Bridge and the surrounding areas, whilst as we know are very beautiful, are short on community resources. This project wants to create an exciting, thriving centre with amenities such as a music and film venue, art spaces, workshops, a riverside café and garden, spaces to meet, the generation of employment through community-orientated businesses, a base for groups, exhibitions, drama and dance. The project will incorporate the library which will continue to run as a council service but will be integrated into the centre.
funding organisations, with the aid of a professional fundraiser. The group will also be involved, over the next few months, in negotiating the terms of the lease with the council. Phil Hawdon, a founder member of the group told us, “By the time the lease is in place, we should be ready to commission the first major phase of the works to the buildings. Our first phase should ensure that as much as possible of the buildings are open and available to the community for a variety of functions, even if some of the spaces will only be temporary in nature. For instance we’d like to get the fire station into use as quickly as possible, possibly move appropriate community-orientated businesses into the former council offices and get the pool building ready to host shows and events and whilst these will be costly to achieve we hope that with as much voluntary help as possible and the aid of local sponsorships we can get going fairly quickly. To everyone out there in the community of Sowerby Bridge, individuals, businesses, groups, organisations: please join us – this project is for you. It’s worthwhile, it’s vital and it’s exciting – get involved! You can contact us via www.facebook.com/sowerbybridgefireand water”
The “yes” decision in April by the Council marks a significant step forward in the project. Funding now needs to be found and the group are following up a number of approaches already made to the big

Le Tour est arrivé Sunday 6th July is nearly here! An indication of this is the number of roadwork pot hole repairs hindering us over the last few weeks. Still, let’s hope it’s worth it for the biggest sporting event in the world to come through Ripponden! Lots to tell you this month but let’s start with the serious stuff as Calderdale Council have released information about the day itself (for more details see calderdale.gov.uk): “Road closures for the Tour de France route will start as late as possible from 6.30am on the Sunday to allow traffic to drain from the route for a period of half an hour. From 7am all the barriers and signage will be put out on the route. From 9am, the route is handed over to the race organisers who will then check the route and prepare for the arrival of the race. Any roads linked to the route will also be closed where the road meets the race route and access roads to the route may also be closed. There will be no parking on the race route. In the coming weeks
Calderdale Council will get in touch with people who live on the route giving more information and alternate parking options. Keep up to date via social media @ InnerCyclist for all things cycling in Calderdale or @letouryorkshire for general information.” To celebrate and help understand the Tour de France Halifax Calder Rotary Club has produced an A3 poster which illustrates the participating teams (jersey colours), the countries they represent together with snippets of information. These posters will be distributed to schools and organisations and will be available from many shops and businesses in the area this month. Groups interested in having copies are welcome to get in touch at rotary@jimsartgallery.co.uk and they will arrange to supply them, but get in quick, because when they’re gone they’re gone! Anyone watching last week’s Giro Italia will have seen the people of Ireland turned out in their thousands to watch the race despite the pouring rain. They were all clad in pink to celebrate the Maglia Rosa, the pink jersey given to the leader of the Giro Italia. The Tour de France’s leader wears continued on P32

the yellow jersey and Ripponden is well on its way to making their Grand Depart yellow with all the hanging bikes as you can see from the photos in this month’s article! If you’d like to join in the yellow fun you can buy Le Tour Ripponden souvenir t-shirts, with 3 designs in adult and children’s sizes and free local deliveries in Ripponden and district via letourripponden.co.uk and hopefully soon via some local Ripponden shops too. Le Tour Ripponden will also soon have a stock of pink acrylic bicycles for hanging outside your house, adding a hint of Magia Rosa to the area! All proceeds from the sale of the pink bikes are going to Breast Cancer Research Action Group. Le Tour Ripponden and Le Tour Barkisland have teamed to get residents cycling. There is a Strava (www.strava.com) group now set up which is free to join and we soon hope to get some social rides running over the summer. There will be a slow and fast group so no-one will get left behind! More details will be posted on Facebook and the website nearer the time.
Finally, the website volunteers have set up a ‘What’s On’ page on letourripponden.co.uk for local businesses and organisations to publicise their events for Le Tour de France weekend. If you have an event you’d like adding to the page, please get in touch at corinne@2plus2bookkeeping. co.uk with a brief description. Here at Go Local!, we will also be publishing a guide to the big weekend in our next issue out the week before the event. Finally, to enter the spirit of the Tour de France passing through Ripponden, Brian of B.D.Brooks Stonemasons, Ripponden and colleague, Karl from Water Jet decided to carve a bike out of solid stone. The bike is in the window of B.D.Brooks and has already caused a lot of interest as it is so unusual. Fiona, from B. D. Brooks commented. “It’s what to do with it after the Tour de France though… So we came up with the idea of raffling off the bike with proceeds going to the charity Yorkshire Air Ambulance.” Raffle tickets are available in Brooks’ showroom in Ripponden or phone Fiona on 01422 822220 for more details.

Book Review - Americanah
by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie Adichie’s last novel, Half of a Yellow Sun, won the Orange Prize and set her up as one of the most highly praised young writers of our time. Her new novel certainly does not disappoint after that recent success. The novel is on a worldwide scale, starting with the teenage love story of Ifemelu and Obinze set in Nigeria. Soon they must part in search of a better life, spurred by their romanticised idea of western culture gained from the Mark Twain books they have read. Ifemelu goes to America to complete her postgraduate degree while Obinze heads to England to search for work. Both soon encounter the loneliness and isolation of being stranded in a strange country, thousands of miles from home. Ifemelu also struggles to find work in post 9/11 America, tense and politically correct as it has become, and finds herself placed by her classmates as a spokesperson for any African-American issues of race identity. Obinze also encounters this prejudice and suspicion in post terrorism Britain,
instead being surrounded by news reports of rising immigration numbers and border controls failing. The question is, can these two make it in the west and, somehow, make their way back to each other? Adichie, is an amazing storyteller, managing to hold a tale that spans three continents to a tight plotline. This novel is a sprawling, living network of tales and you can feel its heart in every chapter. Ifemelu and Obinze are wonderful, intelligently developed characters, particularly Ifemelu whose opinionated and lively tone helps Adichie’s exploration of race identity and isolation to come alive. The book does well to encompass such nuanced and broad topics of discussion - the loneliness of the two characters, the tensions and suspicion western culture has of immigrants and the challenges faced by minority ethnicities in such a hostile society. The blog posts also add texture and depth to the characters and plotline, making this novel one of Adichie’s most entertaining yet.

County Alpacas Update for June You won’t be able to miss us this year around the shows. We have a new marquee and it is looking pretty fancy. It has some very large alpaca photos on the side and is a lot easier to erect than the old one. The first outing this weekend is to Otley Show and the weather forecast is looking good. We just hope that all the wet weather we have had will have dried out and the alpacas look a bit cleaner than of late. We have had some little angels with very dirty faces. When an alpaca gets an itch on its face it scratches its head on the floor. In the weather we have had the result is a muddy mess. Our new farm hand has been introduced to the world of alpacas over the past few months, he is slowly becoming accomplished in all areas of alpaca care. This makes a change from his previous career where he was an expert on horses. He noted rather gleefully that they don’t hurt too much when they kick as Gerty launched a rear cannon shot into his thigh. Today was herd health day and he is now trained to inject and check eyes for problems. We will wait to see if there is a bruise tomorrow. The new website is coming along nicely and there is still a lot of work to do in getting all of our new products on to the site. The duvets are going especially well and we are now buying alpaca fleece from all over the UK to keep up with the demand. We are sourcing the best fibre for the filling and use the finest Egyptian cotton for the cover. They are a delight to sleep under and you are assured of a wonderful Alpaca Snooze. Check us out at www.countyalpacas.co.uk and like us on Facebook to be in with a chance of winning one of our forthcoming competitions. Till next month! Shaun and Julie

RSPCA Halifax/Huddersfield & District Go Local’s Pet of the Month Appeal MAGGIE
Maggie is a lovely older dog who is still quite active. She is looking for a place to call home throughout her retirement years. Sadly Maggie’s owner has passed away so she is now staying in a foster home; she is a gentle soul and loves to be around her human. Maggie came from a house with many other dogs and rabbits, when she arrived
she was a little unkempt and she let her foster mum bathe and clip her claws without a problem. Maggie is in a foster home with cats and gets on with them very well. She will even share her bed with them. If you are interested in adopting Maggie please contact the Centre, Maggie qualifies for the EARS Scheme which offers lots of benefits for people taking on older animals.

Gardening - HEAPS OF JOY…. Let’s cut to the chase before I get side tracked; if you haven’t got a big steaming pile in your garden, then I’m sorry but you just ain’t where it’s at. Composting is the new rock and roll and is the heart and soul of the nation’s “grow your own” frenzy, fuelled no doubt by Monty Don’s persuasive demonstrations on the telly, but mainly because turning what is essentially rubbish into a valuable resource sits nicely in most sane people’s psyche these days! When I was a lad, the compost heap was basically a dumping ground at the bottom of the garden, out of sight and mind, where the tortoise could bury himself and you could always guarantee a good haul of worms for fishing trips. It festered away, increasing in size whenever there was something dead to throw on it, before slowly putrefying into a sticky gooey mess which, once every blue moon, we would empty and deposit on the borders. Not exactly rocket science and probably Monty’s idea of a living (decaying?) nightmare – a far cry from the
pampered compost heaps of today. The new interest has also spawned a huge number of ‘new’ composting bins and systems; we have ingesters, digesters, aerobic, anaerobic, tumblers, wormeries and even one which sits in your kitchen and ‘eats’ anything that the kids or dogs won’t touch! In reality, all you really need for a successful compost heap is some old pallets nailed together and put in a sheltered spot which is accessible

Unfortunately on Weds 30 April some callous thieves stole my Land Rover which contained my appointments diary and mobile phone. You can imagine the serious impact that this had on my business! What bothers me the most is that I have inadvertently ‘let down’ some of my valued customers. Whilst beyond my control, I unreservedly apologise and am now business is back to normal. enough so that you can get stuck in with a fork every now and then. The fork is absolutely essential as the heap must breathe; getting air right through the mix is vital. If you get it right and keep it just moist enough, you will soon feel the warmth generated by all the bacteria and other beasties doing their bit to produce your very own “black gold” - far more precious than Ratner’s finest! You can help the process along by adding some farmyard manure every now and then and topping it off with a piece of old carpet – or if you’ve got an old dog like me, you can stick him on top instead. We are lucky in having the space for a 3 bay affair – it makes life much easier for turning as you (or someone you bribe/ pay!) simply shift the contents from one bay to another and reap the rewards every 6 months. We even use one of the bays as a prize-winning pumpkin bed in the summer – by Halloween there are always plenty of spooky heads to choose from!
Just out of interest, my ‘Garden Oracle’ of 1899 (Price: One Shilling) lists the most popular concoctions for adding nutrients to the garden – there was no mention of a compost heap that year for some strange reason. My favourites are basic slag (titter ye not!), dissolved bones, kainit (?) and Muriate of Potash (?). They were also very fond of droppings (aren’t we all?) and there are various adverts from such august organisations as The Anglo-Continental Guano Works for their bird by-products, fresh from Peru. Together with a bit of matured nightsoil, I’m sure it would have made for ginormous turnips and kept all the Baldric’s very happy. Personally, I’ll stick to my own homebrewed compost – free from all nightsoil, whoever’s it may be! Jonathan Wild Gardener and a bit of a Rotter!

When Life Gets In The Way It’s 6,00am… Your alarm rings… You wake up and bounce out of bed, quickly get your running gear on as you dart downstairs and out of the door for your morning run.
But remember, it doesn’t have to be perfect, just better than before. If you can only spare enough time to go for a 15 minute walk each day, then do that!
…You get back and prepare yourself a real fruit smoothie followed by some low fat yoghurt and berries.
If you can only spare enough money to buy a few healthy items each week, start there.
You shower and change and go to work… At lunchtime you tuck in to the fresh salad you made this morning with poached salmon and rice. Then you get your running shoes on and go for a leisurely stroll to clear your mind and rev up your metabolism getting yourself prepared for an afternoon of productive work… After work you stop off at the gym to do a class before heading home and getting tea ready.
There is no excuse for not getting yourself in to good shape, as the old saying goes ‘there are many ways to skin a cat.’ The gym isn’t the only way to lose weight, a carb free diet isn’t the only way to drop a dress size. But if you take action consistently every day towards your goals, YOU WILL ACHIEVE THEM To your health and fitness - Jago
You then tuck in to your tea of fresh vegetables and baked chicken before getting on with a few household chores that you need to get done. At 9.30pm you decide it’s time for bed so off you go for a deep, full night’s sleep! … Does that sound anything like your typical day? It’s nothing like mine. Even if that’s what I wanted to do each day, I couldn’t because LIFE GETS IN THE WAY! The truth is you need to make compromises every day – you do need to take action, eat well and exercise regularly, but hardly anyone lives life as I’ve shown above, it’s almost impossible. Even people that are in great shape can’t get it just right all the time! Work, children, lack of money, lack of time, lack of energy, lack of motivation, lack of knowledge, tiredness, poor fitness and being overweight are all reasons why many people never get started in the first place.

Preparing for School Any change can be daunting for children and the transition from nursery to school is one of the biggest they will make. With this in mind it is important to prepare your child to take this step and there are lots of things that you can do: Promote self-care and independence: Classrooms are busy places where children will not enjoy the one to one attention they received at nursery. You can teach them some skills which will help them to stand on their own two feet, such as being able to fasten their shoes and coat, blow their own nose and toilet themselves independently. Prepare them for changes in their routine. Your child may never have been in a dining room experience before so practise carrying meals to the table on small trays. Show them how to get changed for PE and fold their own clothes into a pile. Use praise to reinforce these new skills. Ensure that you attend the school’s reception intake day so that your child has an idea of what to
expect when they arrive for their first day and can familiarise themselves with the classroom and the new faces. Make sure that your child has a really good sleep pattern and bedtime routine so that they are fresh and ready for school in the mornings. Walk past the school with your child at break times to see the happy children in the playground. Read stories together about starting school and answer all of their questions about what school will be like. A good nursery will help a great deal in preparing your child for this next step in their lives. Look for
these examples: Helping your child to write and recognise their name. Having a good routine for children that involves respecting other people and equipment and setting consistent behavioural boundaries. Helping to promote children’s independence and build their self-confidence through praise and achievable challenges. Promoting self-care skills in children such as pouring their own drinks, washing their hands after using the bathroom and fastening their own coats for outdoor play. Planned activities that teach children phonics and number skills. Building strong relationships with local schools. Finding out from you which school your child will be attending and inviting the reception teacher to meet your child at nursery. Talking to children about starting school, using stories at circle time
Don’t be disheartened if your child is still a little unsettled during their first week. Change is always a little scary but with support from you and your nursery, your child will be soon able to embrace everything that school life has to offer! Technology
Will there soon be internet access for all? Ten years ago, 48% of British households had access to the internet and six years before that, a mere 9% had the ability to get online. Last year some 83% of households were connected and 72% of adults accessed the internet every day; clearly the digital age is proceeding full steam ahead. The way that we get online has also changed markedly over the last decade or so. In 2013, 61% of the population accessed the internet on the go via a mobile device, compared to 24% in 2010 and virtually none in 2005. At the turn of the century, the majority of the 20% of households that could get online did so via a dial-up connection; now over 99% of them use broadband. Broadband itself is evolving rapidly; 42% of connections were made using super-fast fibre optic in 2013, up 12% in just one year. This reflects the massive investment now being made by the likes of BT and Virgin Media in fibre optic infrastructure. The development in both capability and availability of mobile connections has been equally rapid. The original 2G connections were painfully slow where they could be made at all. 3G was a step change improvement, even allowing users to stream live video as they walked up the street. 4G is another great leap forward, significantly faster than conventional broadband. But what about the 17% of households that have no form of internet access? The government has a vision of universal access within a fairly short timeframe so the Office of National Statistics has been doing some research into these households. They found that 59% neither needed nor wanted internet access; they are effectively opting out of the digital age. However, the remaining 41% are more of a concern; they would like to have internet access but there are obstacles preventing them from doing so. Twenty percent simply don’t have the computer skills necessary to get online and around 13% are put off by the costs of either a computer or broadband rental. The figures suggest that up to 5%
of households cannot get broadband at all, either because they don’t have a phone line or their existing line is not broadband enabled. The situation is much worse where mobile access is concerned because it is dependent on mobile phone coverage. All the main networks have near universal coverage in urban areas, but in rural areas the level of coverage is very much dependent on the network provider; there are large areas of the country that have no coverage at all. So, how far away are we from the dream of universal access? For starters, we should discount the 10% of households that are not online because they don’t want to be – you can’t force people to surf the net. Many of the 3.5% of people who lack the IT skills to get online are contained within the 10% who see no need to do so and most of them are over the age of 60; time and demographics will chisel away at their numbers. The cost of broadband subscriptions and computers continues to fall steadily; eventually, virtually everyone will be able to afford internet access. A story that has got a lot of coverage in the press of late concerns plans by both Google and Facebook to use pilotless drones to beam the internet into inaccessible areas where a conventional broadband infrastructure simply does not exist. These huge unmanned aerial vehicles will circle 60,000 feet above the earth. Powered by solar energy, they will be able to stay aloft for months at a time and on board will be what is, effectively, the mother of all wireless routers. The technology already exists in the main; a bigger problem will be getting the approval of whatever aviation authority runs the airspace of the country being broadcast to. To answer the question posed in the title, there will soon be internet access for everyone who wants it. Graham Iek IT Consultant

Local History Notes – by David Cliff Part 60 – Sowerby Bridge’s first Railway Station.
A company was formed in 1825 to promote a railway between Manchester and Leeds following much the same route as the Rochdale Canal. There was much opposition to it, mainly from landowners along the route and from the Rochdale Canal Company. These obstacles were eventually overcome and the bill put before Parliament finally received the Royal Assent on 4 July 1836. Building work commenced and the line, titled ‘The Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway’ was fully opened on 1 March 1841. By the time of the opening, Sowerby Bridge’s first railway station had been built and was fully functional. Branwell Bronte, brother of the famous Bronte sisters was employed there in 1840 as ‘assistant clerk in charge’ with a salary of £75 per annum. Shortly afterwards he moved to Luddenden Foot station as ‘clerk in charge’ with a pay rise to £130. The photograph shows the original Sowerby Bridge Station which was located where the Tesco car park now stands. It had a short existence however, as in 1876 work commenced to build a replacement on the present site at the end of Station Road. The main reason for the move was to accommodate the branch line being constructed up the Ryburn Valley, but the old station was considered to be too small and inconveniently located. The Calder Valley Line was not all completed at the same time and there were three opening days for different sections. The stretch from Normanton to Hebden Bridge, which includes the Sowerby Bridge section was opened for traffic on 5 October 1840, The Wakefield Journal of 16 October 1840 observing events at Sowerby Bridge reported that :‘Very Funny, but dangerous doings’ ‘The crowd of people was so great and the rush so alarming that, after a brief stay of four minutes, it was necessary to cause the train to move on. There being no room in the carriages, the adventurous travellers mounted the tops; those who could not sit stood upright until the whole of the carriages were
covered with a crowd of standers and thus they travelled to Hebden Bridge stooping down as they passed under the tunnel and numerous bridges on the line and then rising and cheering’. To prevent this at Brighouse in the afternoon, an open air cattle truck was attached and the roof top travellers persuaded to descend and occupy it. However just before the train set off the truck was unhooked and the train rapidly left the station without them to the applause and amusement of the throng of spectators.
Ryburn Valley History Society Meetings The Ryburn Valley History Society meets the 2nd Monday of each month at 7.30pm at Ripponden Conservative Club. Non-members are charged £2 per visit. The next 2 meetings are: 9th June - ‘The Ripponden Co-operative Society’ by David Akroyd. 14th July ‘Our Local Territorials in the Great War’ by David Cliff.

Benchmarking in the Ryburn Valley Ancient Benchmarks like this are to be found on structures throughout the Ryburn Valley The term benchmark, originates from the marks chiselled into stone structures, into which an angle-iron could be placed to form a "bench" for a levelling rod, thus ensuring it could be accurately repositioned to calculate the height above sea level relevant to other nearby benchmarked datum lines. `The benchmark’ is also a professionally accepted term for determining or measuring the quality of standards and performance.
Even though technology has overtaken levelling rods, new benchmarks are still appearing on buildings in our area, as a trademark of the quality standards of a local building company. “Our standards are high and our customers are pleased for us to carve our own discrete benchmark on completion of our new stonework, so look out for more of them appearing” says Robert Gear of Ryburn’s Benchmark Builders.
What our customers say... “We employed RJD, now Benchmark Builders to complete an extension to our property and were delighted with their work. They were hardworking, industrious and extremely conscientious, their timekeeping exemplary and their honesty such that we gave them full access to our home whilst we were absent. Their standard of work is of the highest quality and we would be happy for any prospective clients to come to our property to view the work for themselves.” Barry and Ann Birkby Huddersfield

Help save our moorland from fires June update from your local Upper Valley PCs As the Tour de France approaches, the Police and Natural England would like to make local residents aware of the moorland around us in Calderdale and Kirklees. We would like to make sure that our lovely moors do not suffer from accidental or deliberate fires, which is particularly important during the Tour de France period. Much of the moorland in Calderdale and Kirklees is SSSI (site of Special Scientific Interest) or SPA (Special Protection Area). The moorland close to the residents of Calderdale regularly suffers moorland fires. Many of you will remember the awful fires of last year. These fires are set deliberately or are caused by carelessness. The fires are not caused by farmers burning the grass on the moors. If over the next few months, you happen to see a moorland fire, please dial 999 and ask for fire. Don’t assume that someone else will have rung the fire service already because others may be thinking the same thing! These wide open moorland habitats on our doorstep are important for many reasons, the breeding birds they support, as well as the semi-natural habitats which exist on them. The blanket bog habitats are of particular interest, as globally they are a very scarce habitat. The moorlands are not just important for their wildlife, they are extremely important for the carbon which they contain and remove from the atmosphere and the majority of the country’s drinking water comes from these uplands. Healthy moorland can support a longer season of grazing for stock and a much wider variety of bird and plant species. Much of our moorland is now grass, due to the fires of the past. Burning grass moorland only produces more grass, which provides only short term grazing of 3 to 4 months. Some areas of heather moor are burnt to diversify the structure of heather for birds; this only takes place outside the bird breeding

season before April 15th. The majority of our grass moor fires are later than this and destroy the nests of many bird species. In the South Pennines there should no intentional burning of grass moors, no permissions are in place with Natural England for this to take place on the designated moorland. To help the moorlands recover, Natural England is working in partnership with bodies such as Yorkshire Water and Moors for the Future to restore these degraded habitats. A lot of money is being put into the moors to protect them and help them to recover. Fire puts all this investment at risk – restoration works can be wiped out by one bad fire. Attempts were made to light Soyland Moor over Easter weekend this year alone.
Basically, grass moor fires destroy wildlife and halt the recovery of the moorland. They also endanger the restoration work which is taking place on bare peat to reduce carbon loss and help combat climate change and increase the expense to households for the cleaning of drinking water which is gathered off the moorlands. Let us make sure that the Tour de France does not come to Calderdale and leave with the memory of a moorland fire. If you would like any more information about the moorland on your doorstep, please go to www.magic.gov.uk Regards from your local officers Fiona Igo and George Serban

Property - Commuter routes and house prices
Compare Windsor with Maidenhead. Both towns are in Berkshire and lie on the Thames. Windsor has a royal castle, a lovely town centre, fantastic shopping, lots of good pubs and restaurants and it is surrounded by glorious countryside. The housing stock has plenty of beautiful Georgian and Victorian properties and there is the added draw of Eton on the opposite bank of the river. Maidenhead’s town centre was mostly built in the 1970s and features few historic buildings. Some areas are quite run down and the housing stock contains a lot of ex council properties. Yet, surprisingly, house prices are significantly higher in Maidenhead and there are a great deal of new homes being built. New builds are few and far between in Windsor. What is the reason for this strange phenomenon? Quite simply, there is an express rail link from Maidenhead to Waterloo, whereas the train from Windsor to Waterloo stops at numerous stations on the way. What is more, Maidenhead will be the western gateway to the Crossrail system in a few years’ time,
which will enable commuters to get to the heart of London in around half an hour. The message is clear, to pay their inflated mortgages, residents need to have well paid jobs and they are not prepared to spend longer than they have to commuting to those jobs. A similar effect could be seen in the early 70s following the completion of the M4 motorway. The new road created a 100 mile long corridor of growing, affluent towns and cities between London and Bristol. A few years later the M40 did the same thing between London and Birmingham. Major investments in transport infrastructure invariably have a positive effect on house prices in the areas they connect; often good transport links are the most significant factor driving price fluctuations. In the past decade, investment in transport infrastructure has been at historically low levels, often because of planning wrangles. All this will, no doubt, add fuel to the HS2 debate.

Opinion
- Fifteen fickle minutes of fame Despite having been a sometime fan of X Factor and Pop Idol before it, I have never been able to see the appeal of Britain’s Got Talent. However, this year, for the first time ever, I am taking an interest. There is just one reason for this… and she’s called Lucy Kay. If you didn’t see the first episode of the show, she sang a fantastic performance of Puccini’s Vissi d’arte and sailed through to the next round. She also made it into several tabloid newspapers, courtesy of an emotionally charged story about being bullied as a child because she liked classical music. The reason for my interest is that Lucy sang in a Nottinghamshire girls’ choir called Cantamus and both my daughters sing in the same choir. Cantamus has been around for 46 years and is extremely successful in the world of choral singing, having won numerous prizes and awards in competitions all over the world. The girls start as young as age 8 and normally leave at 18. Some of them are just good singers who enjoy the camaraderie of the choir and the challenges of performing in public and go on to enter careers that have nothing to do with music. Others are truly talented performers who stick with their singing and build careers in opera, musical theatre, teaching and more. What unites them is a love of singing, dedication and sheer hard work – as a Cantamus taxi driver, I speak from experience. Lucy is definitely one of the latter. After being a leading soloist with Cantamus, she won a full scholarship to Glasgow University and has gone on to perform in opera. Most recently she supported Susan Boyle in a series of concerts. To all intents and purposes she has followed the dream and is making a successful living as a singer. But here’s the rub, classical singers can rarely enjoy the fame and fortune of a successful pop singer, although there are a few exceptions - Catherine Jenkins’ 7 albums have sold over 4 million copies between them and Susan Boyle’s first album sold almost 9 million copies worldwide. Worst still, they are singing other people’s music and everyone knows the route to enduring mega-stardom is to write and produce your own songs. Take Michael Jackson, for instance, who sold 750 million albums in a career spanning over 40 years. Open the pages of The Sun
and you will find opera singers are few and far between. To go on a talent show makes a lot of sense for any singer, whatever their genre. All those TV appearances and column inches make all the difference in the world to a musical career. It would hardly be fair to say that Lucy is selling out or dumbing down; really she’s making classical music more accessible to millions of listeners who ordinarily wouldn’t know Puccini from the Pussycat Dolls. But what I find annoying is this need for every talent show contestant to have a “story,” whether it’s their dad dying or being forced to spend their working life as a binman. Don’t the producers think we’re capable of voting for someone because they are a great performer, have an engaging personality or happen to be immensely talented? Even if you win a major talent show, it is no guarantee of success. After all, who remembers Michelle McManus or Steve Brookstein? (Thought not!) It’s most definitely not a guarantee of enduring success; Susan Boyle’s third album has yet to pass the million sales mark; what will her fourth album do? Even so, I wish Lucy Kay every success. Meanwhile, Cantamus have just returned from an international choral festival in Italy where they won a gold medal, best choir in their category and the audience vote for the best choir of the festival. They came home to deafening silence from even the local media; evidently Lucy’s instant fame has yet to rub off on Cantamus. That’s showbiz! Howard Clemmow
