Taking a rest after 30 years! The founder of Barkisland Parent and Toddler Group, Eileen Holmes, has retired from her position after over 30 years. Children and parents said goodbye to Eileen at the group’s Summer picnic and thankfully the weather was kind. The group started when Eileen’s children were tots themselves and initially rotated between local mums’ houses but then took up home at Barkisland Cricket club when numbers grew. The group have met pretty much every term time Wednesday since. Come rain, shine or even snow Eileen has always been there to open up. Eileen has loved her time in charge saying the best thing has been seeing so many different children pass through the group starting as toddlers and only leaving to go to school. She is sad to be leaving and will definitely be popping in to visit. She will be sorely missed by all.

The group returns from the summer break on Wednesday 3rd September and meet every Wednesday during term time at Barkisland Cricket Club from 9.30 till 11.30am. New members are always welcome. If you would like to find out more please contact Cat (07974328060) or Jess (07725484526) who will be taking over the reins.

Ryburn United returns to home ground! It has been almost 12 months now since football has been played at the grounds at Ripponden Wood. During this time £91,000 has been spent on essential drainage and resurfacing work – the financial contribution coming from both Ryburn United football club (Junior section) and Sport England.

the forthcoming 2014-2015,” said Dave Ransley, Chairman of Ryburn United Seniors, “The next project is for essential improvements to the changing rooms which we are looking for sponsorship from local businesses. This can be as little as materials, fittings, labour or even full sponsorship and naming of the changing rooms.”

The club has seventeen Junior teams from under 6s to under 17s (240 players) & three Senior Teams (50 players). The senior section’s first team are the Halifax Premier League Champions! In the 2013/14 season, the Junior teams achieved the following successes - League 2nd place for U10 Blacks, U10 Reds & U14s; League winners U13s & U15s; Cup Semi-finals for U11 Reds and Cup winners U10 Reds!

New players are always welcome at the club. If you are interested or could be a potential sponsors then contact Dave at dransley@hathawaycope. co.uk Before and after drainage works

Recipe - Chocolate fudge brownie I can’t tell you how dense and rich this brownie is; it is gooey and intense and a truly wonderful sweet treat. And, better than that, it is simple and easy to make! If you like chocolate then you will love this and make it again and again. Ingredients: 250g dark chocolate (50-70% cocoa) 250g unsalted butter 4 eggs 375g sugar 150g flour (plain or gluten free)

Pour into a lined tray or cake tin and bake at 160°c for about 20-25 minutes until cracks appear on the surface; you do not want it fully cooked or it won’t be as sticky. Cool and cut into portion sizes; this will store in a tub for at least two weeks or longer in the fridge. Enjoy this with some clotted cream or ice cream.

Method: Melt the chocolate together with the butter in a plastic or glass bowl in the microwave. Heat for no more than one minute at a time on full power and stir each time to avoid scorching the chocolate. Whisk together the eggs and sugar, then stir into the melted chocolate and butter. Lastly, mix the flour thoroughly into the mix until completely combined.

County Alpacas September update County Guardsman (aka George), the latest addition to our herd has settled in very well with his new friends, our white yearling males Wobey, Odin and Zeus. He was not used to being handled but is now getting the hang of it and halter training has started. We are hoping to show him at this year’s Yorkshire Alpaca Group Show at Thirsk in October. He is easy to spot alongside the other three white boys as he was sheared by a different shearer and has a beautifully coiffured top knot, fluffy legs and tail. Darcey and Anya have also had a busy couple of months attending numerous agricultural shows and events with us. They know the routine now and even come to the gate when called, ready to walk into the trailer like royalty. For Halifax Show we are taking the four boys including Guardsman. We have just got in stock a new book called Horace the Alpaca It has been written and published by one of our alpaca colleagues in Northumbria. She is a child psychologist and wrote the book as an aid in her daily work with children. The book is brilliant as it engages the reader and encourages the child and parent to interact and think about the story as it develops. Horace was born too early and struggled to survive, but against all the odds he made it and is now a strapping yearling at Prince Bishop Alpacas. The moral of the story is that you should never give up. The book leads the young reader to this conclusion with a series of lovely pictures and simple story. Ideal for 5 to 8 year olds.

George – just arrived

Visit our web site at www.CountyAlpacas.co.uk to see the book and all our other alpaca products. Please like us on Facebook to up to date with everything at County Alpacas. Till next month! Shaun and Julie

RSPCA Halifax/Huddersfield & District Go Local’s Pet of the Month Appeal JESS Jess is a loving young dog who came into the Centre via RSPCA Inspectors as she had been badly beaten by her previous owners. Despite this Jess absolutely loves people. She is a very active dog and has lots of energy to run about and play. Jess is very good in the car she loves nothing more than to put her head out of the window to get some air. Jess is fully house trained and can be left alone for short periods of time. At the

Animal Centre she spends her days in one of the offices where she enjoys being around lots of people and playing with her toys. Jess is very popular with our dog walkers and is a firm favourite with one in particular who comes every morning to walk her. Jess has had a difficult life so far and has been treated terribly by humans so really does deserve the chance of a permanent loving home. If you could offer Jess a loving home please call into see her.

Sowerby Bridge Rushbearing Festival Photographs Well after all the excitement and drama of Le Tour, it’s now time to slow the pace of events in our ‘Happy Valley’ and now prepare for the annual Sowerby Bridge Rushbearing Festival. This year as always, the Rushbearing takes place over the first weekend of September, so this year will be the 6th and 7th.

2010 - Sowerby Bridge Rushbearing Festival

Copyright 2011 Rushbearing. All Rights Reserved.

Site by Jop Smith

For centuries rushes were used as a form of floor covering for churches, and each year the old rushes were thrown outnextprevious and replacement rushes were taken to the churches by cart. The focal point of the festival would be the celebrated Rush Cart itself. There was great rivalry between villages, and the builders and supporters of each cart. Carts were decked out with valuable trinkets, with bands and Morris Dancers accompanying the procession. The focal point of the festival, the only one of its kind in Yorkshire, is a 16 foot high, 2 wheeled thatched Rushcart, weighing in at a ton. It is pulled by 60 local men dressed in Panama Hats, White Shirts, Black Trousers and Clogs with a Cart Maiden riding on top. They are accompanied by music and teams of Morris dancers, Clog Dancers and Mummers. The colourful procession is an unforgettable spectacle as it winds it’s way down from the village of Warley, through Sowerby Bridge and ending at the canal wharf by Saturday tea-time. Please note a slight change of events on Sunday morning. After a Rushbearing Service at St. Peter’s Church, Sowerby, the activities continue at St Peter’s Cricket club, and

NOT the Rushcart pub, which is still undergoing refurbishment. The procession will then leave from St Peter’s Cricket club, but will not pass through Hubberton this year, continuing to Ripponden via the hill top villages, and calling in for a pleasant afternoon’s entertainment at Triangle Cricket Club. The total distance covered is 9 miles. Stops are still made to present token rushes at the churches and to dance at the public houses and in the streets. Refreshments are available along the way. The passage of the cart serves as a focus for local community groups, charities and entertainment. For further information please visit - www.rushbearing.com

Vonderbrand Top Tips Advertising… 1. Go Local! No favouritism intended. There’s a phrase; Don’t Pass Work To Go To Work! It is more economical to service customers in your own backyard than those who are miles away, so be sure to let them know you are OPEN FOR BUSINESS! 2. Commitment. Adverts seldom yield results from their first airing, so it’s wise to think long term. Regular advertising is often easier on the budget, as economy of scale usually comes in to play. 3. Continuity Rules! A good marketing agency will help you devise a campaign theme. You will have noticed how large companies run with a storyline or character over a sustained period of time, yet keep their ads fresh and interesting by evolving the plot or updating the content. Themed campaigns consistently beat ad hoc advertising.

4. Call To Action! We’ve said it before and we’ll keep saying it... Entice the reader to act! Phrases like ‘Call Now’ and ‘Email TODAY’ are used a lot (and there are certainly more creative terms one might opt for), but anything that encourages a prospective customer to make contact is better than nothing. 5. Source Code. Advertising costs money. In order to determine the effectiveness of your ad (and the publication in which it features) it is vital that you attribute enquiries to stimuli. Ask the question “Where did you hear about us?” Cost per lead (CPL) and cost per deal (CPD) enable you to forecast more accurately future response.

Technology

It’s all in the wrist action Those who remember the 1980s, and the vogue for wearing towelling wristbands if you were even vaguely considering any form of exercise, will have been wondering how long it would take for this trend to come round again. Well, I’m happy to say that it has – and today’s must have fashion accessory for sporty types does a whole lot more than stop the palms of your hands from getting sweaty. There are a plethora of products on the market; let’s take a look at a few of them. Probably the most popular is the Nike Fuelband – it’s already on its second generation. This chunky device is intended to be worn most of the time; it isn’t fully waterproof so you can’t go swimming in it and it needs to be recharged periodically. It contains an accelerometer to measure arm movements and a small LED display that provides a limited amount of information. The Fuelband can connect to a computer or mobile device via Bluetooth and a USB port. Initially, you set up your profile on a computer including your height, weight and so on. Then you set up the sports and activities that you intend to perform and set yourself a series of goals, for instance running 3km each day. When you achieve a goal, the wristband sends you a message of encouragement. Real lovers of data can sync their wristband with the Nike Fuel website and view graphs of their performance, then brag about it to their friends via the built in social media site. The Fuelband costs around £129. Next up is the Fitbit Flex. This has an advantage over the Fuelband in that it is a tiny module that fits in a replaceable rubber wristband, which means that you don’t have to wear the band all the time. The Fitbit is more geared towards lifestyle and wellbeing rather than sporting prowess; it will tell you how many steps you have taken and calories you burned but not how quickly you finished your run. One thing it does do better than the Fuelband is to measure and learn your sleep patterns. This

means that you can set the alarm to wake you as you move into a light sleep, therefore reducing. tiredness. On the face of it, the Fitbit represents pretty good value too, a snip at just £80. Our final contender is the Jawbone Up. This seems like the most complete product out of the group and is geared towards helping athletes manage their potential and help those who want to lose weight. You can enter in a variety of sports and the band will give you real time feedback on performance and calories burnt; you can even enter the number of calories consumed during the day – ideal for those seeking to lose weight. It also monitors sleep patterns in the same way that the Fitbit does. The sculpted nylon band, available in a range of colours, really looks the part too. At £124, the Jawbone comes in cheaper than the Fuelband and seems to be a superior product. While I have to admire the way that these products make use of state of the art technology at an affordable price, I’d have to question how they fit in with the modern lifestyle of most people. Serious athletes and sportsmen (and women) will already have a training program worked out in conjunction with a nutritionist and their coach. They don’t need any of these products. For those who just want to get a bit more exercise, they represent complete overkill – they don’t need all that data and they’d probably rather not have a hefty bracelet attached to their wrist for 24 hours a day. As for people who want to lose weight, all these devices have a fatal weakness; they tell you how many calories you’ve burnt but not how many you’ve consumed, something most overweight people have a real problem in calculating. Never mind, wearing a sport band says all the right things about you – you’re sporty, body conscious and dedicated. Money well spent! Graham Iek IT Consultant

Professionals in eye care When was the last time you had your eye sight professionally examined? Unless you have a current prescription or your eyesight has noticeably deteriorated, many of us neglect to attend the recommended 2 yearly inspection. I recently had the opportunity to meet with Jim Bottomley of Bottomley Opticians, located on Union Street in Halifax. This family owned business was established in 1948 and then in 1993 they expanded to open their second practice in Lindley. Jim explained how important a regular eye examination is “The eye gives an indication of a client’s general well being, through the use of technology we can find underlying health issues such as high blood pressure and diabetes.”

Such prompt diagnosis has resulted in Bottomley Opticians receiving a number of testimonials from customers thanking them for offering such a thorough eye examination. Jim went on to tell me “An in depth quality eye examination usually lasts 30 to 35 minutes and we can also take digital photos of the back of the eye. This can help in monitoring eye conditions.” Customer service is key to the success of any privately owned business Jim said “We have a great relationship with both customers and suppliers; we have an extremely high customer retention with most of our new clients coming through recommendation”. So if like me you are struggling to remember the last time you had your eyes examined, call Bottomley Opticians on 01422 331031 to book your appointment now.* *£35.00 Eye examination

Free Emergency Life Support Training How would you respond in an emergency? The skills of Emergency Life Support (ELS) are simple, can save lives and can be learnt in just 2 ½ hours. They can be performed by anyone to keep someone alive whilst the ambulance is on its way. The free Heartstart Course will teach you how to: • Perform effective cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) • Recognise and treat someone having a heart attack • Care for an unconscious casualty • Help someone who is choking • Manage serious bleeding • Learning these simple skills could help you save a life. Heartstart UK is an initiative co-coordinated by the British Heart Foundation to teach members of the public what to do in a life-threatening emergency: simple skills that can save lives. It provides opportunities for people to learn the vital skills of ELS. Through Heartstart UK the BHF aims

to strengthen the chain of survival by promoting and supporting ELS training in the community. Heartstart courses will be run in the Ryburn Valley and will offer practical advice, whilst encouraging discussion on improving resuscitation knowledge and practice. The course requires no medical skills and illustrates that the benefits that CPR performed by a bystander in an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest are significant. If you can perform effective CPR whilst the ambulance is on its way you can more then double a person’s chance of survival. Courses held Monthly Tuesdays at Station Road Surgery, Station Road, Sowerby Bridge hopefully at Ripponden Surgery For Further information please contact Sue Bell on 07799 407497 *This could be the most valuable thing you will ever learn*

Gardening - It’s Showtime! Last week I had the great pleasure of being invited by my father-in-law to the world’s largest flower show – Hampton Court. Never being one to turn down a freebie (particularly one involving a slap up ‘corporate’ lunch!) we duly set off at an ungodly hour for the epic (now I remember why I gave up commuting…) journey to Henry VIII’s former country pile. Thankfully, we missed the human tide that descended on the place later in the day and enjoyed what is, in effect, a dumbed down Chelsea – no royals, celebs or assorted wags getting in the way of what should be a very nice day out. All the right exhibitors were there, the fine dining was very fine, the backdrop of the Palace was stunning, even the sun had seen fit to shine. So why is it that, when everything else is so perfect, I still find the prospect of the event’s biggest “stars,” the show gardens, so dull? Try as I might (I have helped build show gardens at Chelsea and BBC Gardeners’ World Live in the past) I just can’t raise a smidgen of interest in either

the highbrow gardens at Chelsea, which cost the price of an average semi in Sunderland, or the more achievable and realistic displays at Hampton Court and elsewhere. I’m not sure, for instance, that a recreation of an Australian landscape is really something I’d go to a flower show to see – wouldn’t it be better at a theme park? And don’t get me started on “conceptual” gardens… why on earth are the RHS awarding medals to “designers” for creating mounds of earth with garden tools artfully stuck in them?!

Gardening - It’s Showtime!

Cont. from P88

That being said, I don’t think I’d be foolish enough to spurn the advances of any willing sponsor (just Google Jonathan Wild Gardens if you want my contact details) who would like a spectacular garden designed for next year’s Chelsea. Maybe then I could add those two great words award winning to my title instead of plain old Mr. In the meantime, what greater honour could I wish for than to have a real garden I’ve created put on public display– a garden being shown as opposed to a show garden! I designed and built this garden down in a gorgeous Dorset village just a couple of years ago and it has quickly matured into a stunning little gem. It might only be small but it’s full of interest, from the wildflower meadow that runs along a riverbank to lots of curving

natural stone raised planters filled with a with beautiful combinations of roses, herbaceous planting and spring bulbs. Being invited back to host the garden open day recently was terrific. There were hundreds of very impressed visitors (from a Lord and his Lady to the local postman!), in fact it was standing room only most of the time. The difficult bit was finding time to chat to everyone and spelling out the Latin names of all the plants – I must get some large easily readable labels for the next event! The good thing about this show garden is that it will get better and better with each passing year – sadly not something that can be said for its transient cousins at Chelsea……! Jonathan Wild Gardener and Wanabee Medal Winner!

Calendar with a cycling theme….

Photographs - Susan Russell and Steph Penny

Ripponden in Bloom, the not for profit voluntary group who help make the village look great each year, has adopted a cycle theme for their 2015 calendar. This celebrates the hugely successful visit of the Grand Depart through the village and features picturesque shots from the route. This year’s calendar is just £5 and is available from local shops. All money from sales goes to directly fund the group in the buying of plants etc. for the village. It makes an excellent Christmas gift and stocks are limited stock so don’t miss out!

From the mouths of….. burglars! This month we’re giving some crime prevention advice from a different angle - the burglar is giving the advice... So before you go out to work, for a trip out, whether long or short (even a trip to the shop), on holiday or a weekend break. Please consider the below quotes from convicted burglars. These are people who have broken into peoples’ homes and taken their precious belongings, including cars. Keep them locked out, be secure “I think people are more security conscious than ever, but they still leave doors and windows unlocked or open. This is a simple thing that would help to put a burglar off or otherwise it’s easy for us and you’re done, dusted and gone before they realise.” 2. What are you advertising? Keep it hidden

to take the car I know they’d have nice stuff inside. They should use their garage if they’ve got one.” 6. You might be on holiday but they’re not

“They should hide valuables and have nothing on show, ‘especially in the kitchen. Why would I go into a house if I didn’t know there was anything in there worth having?”

“You can tell if folk are on holiday ‘cos all the blinds are closed or there’s mail in the letterbox, papers sticking out or sometimes milk on the step. I just look through a window to see if I can see mail on the floor. If the blinds or curtains are closed a few days on the trot you know they’re away.”

3. Is anyone home? Make it look lived in

Please keep you and your belongings safe and secure

“I’ve never done a house when I’ve seen the TV on ’cos you know someone is in. Lights on upstairs puts me off ’cos you don’t know if someone is in or not.”

Regards Fiona Igo PC5285 and George Serban PCSO403 Ryburn

4. An alarm is only any good if you use it! “Sometimes you get opportunities if you’re walking an area – someone might leave their house as you’re passing and you know they haven’t set the alarm as you can’t hear it setting itself. I’ve waited five or ten minutes and then gone back and burgled the house” 5. Got a garage? Then why not use it? “The first thing that would attract me to a house is if they’ve got a nice car, ‘cos even if I wasn’t going

Property - Why are lenders marking valuations down?

Many people will remember this scenario from the dark days of 2009. After extensive negotiation, a price is agreed and it looks like a long awaited house sale is going ahead. Then the mortgage lender’s surveyor comes along and gives a valuation that is 10% below the agreed sale price. Either the price is negotiated down still further or the mortgage isn’t released and the sale falls through. In 2009 it was understandable; there was a strong likelihood that the value of the property would fall in the short term and the lender had to limit that risk. But now it is happening again, and not in the regions where you might expect it – those where house prices have hardly risen at all in the past year. Instead, it is happening in London, the South East and other property hot spots around the country. In this scenario, the buyer is happy to pay what looks like an inflated price. After all, if they wait a year

and current trends continue, they could well end up paying a whole lot more. The question is, why would lenders mark down valuations in such a buoyant market? There is only one answer; they believe there is a very real risk that prices are going to fall in the near future. It has been obvious for some time that the house price bubble in the South East is unsustainable. There are only so many wealthy foreign investors to go round and sooner or later we will reach a stage where even wealthy families can’t afford to buy. Despite Mark Carney’s determination to use policy to damp down prices, the market has always been capable of correcting itself, sometimes in a painful manner. I have a feeling that is exactly what is about to happen in London and elsewhere. Craig Brown

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Manager Andy Routledge feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps.

Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Ripponden, Rishworth, Barkisland, Norland, Sowerby, Mill Bank, Soyland & Sowerby Bridge areas & Andy is finding that his

approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve

done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Andy a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!
