Wainui’s octogenarian developer By: Gerald Rillstone
With decades of experience in drain laying it may come as a surprise to some that 86 year-old John Walsh is the man behind the biggest housing development in Wainuiomata for 50 years. As a drain layer John had only ever developed subdivisions for the length of his career, never venturing into housing developments, until four years ago aged 81 he decided to give it a go. Continued on page 2. Drain layer and developer John Walsh still going strong at 86-years-old.Photo Gerald Rillstone.

Never too old to develop
Continued from page 1 It was no half measure in taking on the project, he was setting out to build 134 homes in total and did. He purchased a block of land in Wainuiomata from Brian Morgan, another drain layer, who had owned the block since buying it off the Hutt City Council, but had found the job was too big for him and sold the land to John with the help of John Ross from Professionals Real-Estate. It was at this point that John Ross suggested he give the full development a go, prior to this John Walsh’s biggest claim was he had done all the drain laying for Churton Park and a lot of work on
the early stages of the Whitby development. “Years ago I had also bought 108 acres of land in Tawa and when the drainage business wasn’t busy we would work on it and I broke the land up to eight to ten blocks, but didn’t build houses,” he says. The whole drainage business is a family business and daughter Theresa is involved with the running of it. She says a big part of the success of the development is the relationships with Mike Friday from Friday Homes, who are building the dwellings and John Ross from the Professionals in Lower Hutt. The development was put together in two

Clarification on RiverLink Recent media reports have focused on the RiverLink project being potentially fast-tracked under the Government’s COVID-19 Recovery (Fast-Track Consenting) Bill and Hutt City Council has released a statement to clarify Hutt City Council’s position on this and the wider RiverLink project. fully committed to the partnership with the Greater Wellington Regional Council, Waka Kotahi/ NZ Transport Agency and mana whenua so that together we can deliver the full transport, resilience and economic benefits for our community. Recently Greater Wellington Regional Council approached the RiverLink Board to make a
submission on the draft Bill to fast-track RiverLink. The two days Council had as a member of the Board to support a request for fast-tracking RiverLink was insufficient to do due diligence on such a complex and multi-faceted project. The key concerns were around consultation and engagement, and geotechnical investiga-
tions had not been completed to inform Hutt City Council designs. More work is required for Hutt City Hutt City Council was and remains supportive of Greater Wellington pursuing a fast-track process for their component of the project, i.e. the flood protection work, should they wish to do this.

It was a rare treat for more than 20 teddies from all over Wainuiomata last Friday when they got to sleepover at the Library. Alexia Herrera, Wainuiomata Children’s and Teens Librarian says the idea was for it to be a Matariki sleepover and the Teddies would have fun in the library during the evening. Photo’s where taken of the antics they got
up to from star gazing to playing table tennis and later photocopying their bottoms on the library photocopier just for fun. Alexia produced a pictorial book of the goings on and presented each child with a personalised copy when they picked up their teddy the next morning. The over night stay was all part of the Wainuiomata Hub’s school holiday events and celebrating Matariki.

Sharpie gets life-time award By: Gerald Rillstone Last Friday saw the gathering at the Wainuiomata Rugby League Club to raise funds and honour local and national legend Bill Sharp with a life-time award. Recently awarded the Queen’s Service Medal for services to youth, Bill, known as Sharpie, has run the Futures Programme in Wainuiomata for at-risk students for the past 24 years. He established the support programme for teenage boys in 1997 and that programme continues to this day as the Futures Programme. Bill says the idea was to support students who are seen to be“slipping through the cracks” of society, where he provides physical, spiritual and emotional well-being services. “To me I was just doing a job and people couldn’t believe I was at the school for so long,” Bill says.
“At the end of each year we would have a breakfast for everyone and I had lots of support, and people don’t realise what it meant to me.” “When I saw some of those kids lives turn slightly from how it had been I always thought, now that’s it pay day again.” He says people often asked him if he thought the programme was a success and Bill says he’s not trying to boast about it. He likes to think he had a little to do with the fact that out of the Wainuiomata club came three national club titles, six Wellington titles, one New Zealand 9s title and one New Zealand 7s title. Not to mention All Blacks Fa’alogo Tana Umaga, Piri Weepu, Bill Sharp with Paul Whatuira during the Wainuiomata Rugby League Club fundraiser and life time award Neemia Tialata, Tyrel Lomax, presentation. Craig Innes and the list goes on. “Bill has positively impacted ultimately as a Nation, we thank Hutt City Mayor Campbell Barry of service to coaching, mentoring says, “Bill Sharp is one of the and helping athletes across a the lives of hundreds of stu- him immensely for his service, most influential sporting people wide range of sports to achieve dents. Harriers underway What a year this has turned out to be! Life as we know it stopped, and is still not quite the same. Thankfully our sporting life has made a good attempt to return to normal. This includes the Wainuiomata Harrier Club. We are very excited to be able to offer a fairly full season of social runs as well as races. Most of our races this season will be held in Wainui, with a few outside of the valley competing against other clubs. We are a club with a deep history
in Wainuiomata, and welcome all levels and ages of runners and walkers to continue our future. Some of our members compete at interclub events while others are happy walking or running socially at our club meetings each Saturday. The choice is yours. Come along and give it a go! You don’t have to be fit or have even run before. Every Saturday we meet at 1.45pm at our clubrooms, Richard Prouse Park, Hine Road. Come and enjoy some of the
wonderful tracks and scenery that Wainui has to offer while treating your body to fresh air and the vitamin D our bodies crave during the winter months. We are a very social club and include many social activities during the season. For those wanting to get a bit more out of their running, we also have separate adults and kids training groups on Tuesdays. For more details or information on the club please contact Nikki on 021 0234 8292

Specialist mental health and addictions service The Mental Health, Addictions and Intellectual Disability Service (MHAIDS) has launched a GP Liaison service to provide specialist mental health and addictions advice to general practices across the Hutt Valley, Wairarapa and Wellington regions. From last week, General Practitioners and Nurse Practitioners will be able to contact the GP Liaison Consultant Psychiatrist for phone consultations, join virtual consultations via zoom, and ac-
cess monthly virtual education sessions. The new service supports the Government’s Access and Choice Mental Health initiative and aligns with the recommendations of He Ara Oranga—to expand access and choice, and enhance wellbeing, promotion and prevention. “The GP Liaison service is an important component of ensuring that primary care has access to early specialised mental health and addictions advice,” said MHAIDS
general manager Nigel Fairley. “The service strengthens the ability to initiate treatment for people in the community before their condition worsens or becomes acute.” It is recognised internationally that the needs of those with mild to moderate mental health and addictions problems are best met in the primary care setting. Early specialised support strengthens the overall continuum of care and supports a collaborative whole-

of-sector approach to improving outcomes for our people. Primary health organisations across the greater Wellington region welcome the additional support and service. “Mental health work is a large part of primary care and we are very pleased to welcome this new role,” says Tu Ora Compass mental health medical director Dr Louise Poynton. “Our general practices will now be able to rapidly access specialist
advice, which will have a significant positive impact on the care we deliver to our patients.” “General practices in the Hutt Valley have been calling for this kind of service for some time, so it is wonderful that MHAIDS has enabled this position to be put in place,” said Te Awakairangi chief executive Bridget Allan. “We are looking forward to working closely with the MHAIDS teams on other service improvements for our tangata whaiora.”

Greenhouse gases down A new report shows that gross greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) are down by 11% across Lower Hutt and there has been a 19% drop in emissions on a per capita basis. The report by infrastructure firm AECOM covers 2001 to 2019 and was commissioned as part of a region-wide assessment of GHG emissions. Increased GHG emissions are the main driver of climate change and the government has committed to reduce these to zero by 2050.

Connecting through stories Connecting through a story telling workshop will not only build a community but empowers the people also. “Our community has great stories” says Esther King, Love Wainuiomata. “sharing these stories is a fantastic way of bringing people together to connect and build community.” “So we are really excited to
start a project that’s all about supporting our locals to share and celebrate their stories with our wider Wainuiomata community and visitors,” she says. “By sharing stories people feel better connected with, and better able to support, our fantastic businesses, clubs, organisations and other Wainuiomata offerings.”
What’s Cooking...
As well as Love Wainuiomata actively seeking out and helping to share stories, they really want to empower the community and businesses to tell their own stories. The workshop on Tues 21 July 6.00pm at Wainuiomata Library is all about that. “We want to hear from our community about what they value and the stories they

GARDENING THIS WEEK Planting potatoes: By Wally Richards New seasons certified seed potatoes are now available through garden centres. These were grown last summer and certified as Seed Potatoes then held in a cool store till now. That is good because once the potatoes come out of the cool store to warmer temperatures, they will start to initiate sprouts. If you find the bags of seed potatoes with the beginnings of sprouts at your garden centre, you have a good buy. The other side of the coin is if these bags of seed potatoes sit in the warmer conditions too long the sprouts will develop and grow long and weak, easy to break off when handling and not a good buy. It has been noted that in some chain stores where the staff do not rotate seed potatoes in the bins and instead put fresh stocks on top, that the bags on top can be great and underneath the bags are too far gone to be of any value planting. A novice gardener not knowing better could buy these potatoes with big sprouts, plant them and have a poor harvest months later. Not good. I find that certified seed potatoes from the South Island growers are more likely to produce good harvests than North Island grown ones. Why? This is likely the harsher conditions in the South Island which mean less pests and diseases. The same also applies with fruit trees. I would rather buy a South Island
grown tree compared to a North Island one. The South Island ones take off, coming to warmer conditions in the North Island and always appear more hardier. So when buying your seed potatoes look for bags that say grown in the South Island and for potatoes that have not sprouted much. Then you simply take your seed potatoes home place them with their little sprouts up, in a wooden tray and place in a frost free situation that gets direct sunlight such as a glass house, under a car port or on a porch. They can sit there for a couple of weeks as they ‘green up’ with the sprouts growing and hardening up. The sooner you are able to plant out your potatoes with good green sprouts the better. Once the sprouts are firm you can further speed up the growing by covering the potatoes with moist untreated saw dust or damp sand. The potatoes will quickly form roots and then you can plant out. If you do this ensure you check the potatoes every few days as it does not take long for them to root up too much and damage can happen when you separate them. As seed potatoes are planted deep (because the new potatoes will form up the stalks and in a sense, the deeper, the more potatoes) they are covered over as the foliage comes through; which protects them against frost. So dig a trench about one to two
spades deep, place a tablespoon of Gypsum, a half teaspoon of BioPhos and about a half dozen sheep manure pellets then sprinkle a little soil to cover them and place your sprouted potato on top of this little pile with most of the sprouts looking at the sky. Cover with soil so it’s just covered. If you have Wallys Silicon and Boron Soil drench make up as to the label instructions with water and apply about 150mils per potato; water over the soil where they are covered. When the sprouts break through the soil cover them with more soil. This does two things, protects them from frost and stretches the haulm. The longer the haulm the bigger the crop. If the tops get too tall before covering then the haulm will be short and a small crop results. 10-20mm is right time to cover again with soil. This is repeated and then later mounded so there can be a good period of time that frosts will not affect the potatoes as the new foliage is covered by a layer of soil. Later you can spray the foliage with Vaporgard for frost protection and use covers as well if need be. The potatoes are going to be slower growing till the ground warms up. Never dig a deep trench and cover completely over, in the early part of the season, as the seed potatoes are likely to fail and rot out. Dig a deep trench by all means but just cover the seed potato with soil and repeat as it grows upwards.
Assistant Principal, Wainuiomata Intermediate What food do you crave most often? I am a massive burger fan When you have had a bad day, what do you do to feel better? It has taken me a while to figure out the best way to cope with having a bad day. Now that I’ve matured I see exercise as a great way to make myself feel better if I’m having a bad day. For me, it is a walk up the Wainui hill, a short run or a game of squash. What’s one thing on your bucket list? To attend the NBA finals that would be pretty amazing. Who has been the biggest inspiration in your life? My mother - she is an extremely hard working lady who always sees the best in anyone and constantly puts others first. Probably couldn’t ask for a better role model.
What was the last photo you took? A terrible selfie on Wednesday to go on the mapmyrun app, it showed how painful the run was. What thing do you really wish you could buy right now? A brand new pair of classic Reebok shoes What is the best or worst purchase you’ve ever made? Best - I have purchased a section to build on later this year Worst - I own some pretty terrible loud shirts that a few people dislike Favourite programme currently watching? Big TV series watcher - Billions on Neon. If you had to flee the country, where would you choose to live? Thailand
What’s the most beautiful place you’ve ever been? Hawaii - was lucky enough to visit last year. It was amazing.

SPORTS TALK With Jacob Page
Pathetic officiating hampers bumbling Warriors I can’t help myself. I had planned to write about the Crusaders versus Blues game this week but the officiating in the Warriors NRL game won out. Firstly, as many of you know, I’m not a Warriors fan, haven’t been for more than a decade. The decision to lose the faith has helped my blood pressure and general wellbeing over that time immensely. I’m not afraid to admit I’ve often
revelled in their incompetence with giddy glee for much of that time. However, on Friday night, they were the victims of one of the worst officiating performances I can remember. The perception has long been the Warriors do not get a fair go from the referees and while often that is exaggerated, both on-field referee Chris Butler and bunker (TV review) referee Jared Maxwell ensured the Titans had every
chance to win. Butler, in particular, was pathetic and appeared to be well out of his depth. The Warriors did not get one penalty all night - not one. They had a try disallowed from the bunker for interference in the lead-up that was nothing short of lunacy and Butler appeared to be officiating the Warriors to a complete double-standard for much of the game.
Like I say, I did not have a dog in the fight and the Warriors were their own worst enemy at times but the NRL brass needs to wake up and realise performances like that from match officials cannot be tolerated. The players are rightly criticised as they are professionals, so the match officials deserve to be judged accordingly. A Monday morning apology simply is not good enough.
The Titans won 16-12 but with a one-man advantage all game, they should have won by more. The Titans are an awful team also. It was their first win at home in more than a year, and they needed plenty of help to achieve it. The loss will do nothing to help the mood in the Warriors camp, with many of them already eager to return home after next week’s game against Cronulla.
Mixed results for Ulalei By: Lahraine Sagaga Ulalei Netball had mixed results on Saturday with Premier 1 Pua losing to UHMU 1 and Senior 1 Fuesina winning against NNCU 5. Senior 1 Ulalei Fuesina continued their winning form against NNCU 5 with the defence combination of Summer Pere and Cerie Milovale in the circle continuing to strengthen by restricting NNCU 5 to only 2 goals in the first quarter. Fuesina took a 9-2 lead in the first quarter. The team displayed some wonderful straight-line through court play to extend their lead to 19-8 at half time. Wing Defence
Brooke Cowpland checked in with a couple of fantastic two-hand intercepts to widen the gap to a comfortable 15 goal lead by the end of the third quarter 26-11. That didn’t stop Fuesina who put the foot on the pedal with some accurate feeding from midcourters Angela Milovale and Tiana Weepu into sharp shooters Ake McCarthy and Sina Tamaalii to take a comprehensive 39-17 victory. “It was a really good win. The team are finding their straps and working well together. The experience of Tamaalii at the attacking end of the court, was invaluable” says satisfied coach, Karina. Fuesina
