Saturday’s opening of the $22.5m Waitohi community hub began at dawn, 4.45am, with a welcome and Maori blessing led by Kura Moeahu and Taku Parai. After 7am came speeches and cultural presentations reflecting the multi-cultural nature of the local community, including young Chinese dancers, an Interfaith Council presentation on their council sponsored ‘We are One’ programme and the Natraj School of Indian Dance. Continued on page 2. Wellington Mayor Andy Foster cuts the ribbon at Saturday’s opening of the Waitohi Library and Community Hub, flanked by two early advocates, former Deputy Mayor Helene Ritchie at left and former city librarian Jane Hill. Continued from page 1. Tracey Ma r tin, the Minister of Internal Affairs spoke, as did Laurinda Thomas, the WCC libraries and community spaces manager. The level of innovation and strong sense of new direction for all Wellington libraries - not least plans for the earthquake ravaged central library were common themes in all the speeches. Laurinda was just one of those who told the audience that the hub was creating a new way of bringing the community together. She had many thank you’s to make. That reflected the level of consultation, not least with the community reference group that was there from the start. One new innovation is the The Hive (The Home of Invention and Various Experiments). It’s a “makerspace” where people of all ages can learn new skills from 3D printing, robotics and coding to paper crafts, to knitting and sewing. There was an emphasis on the fun those involved

had in doing the planning “And that’s a very rare trait in project management.” said Laurinda, praising project manager Andrea Thomas, the consultants and the collaborative WCC team effort on the project Mayor Andy Foster also had a long list of thank you’s, ranging from firms like architectural firm Ian Athfield and Southbase Engineering, to smaller organisations and individuals. He mentioned as one of them Jane Hill, city librarian for “twentyodd yea rs”, and she received a spontaneous round of applause. He also acknowledged previous mayors and library champions Helene Ritchie and Justin Lester. The hub houses the community’s new libra r y, t he Com mon Ground café, the Whanau Manaaki Kindergarten and links to the newly revamped Keith Spry swim m ing pool a nd the Community Centre, as well as to Memorial Park through a newlylandscaped outdoor area.

Christmas Live Mary (Rebecca Bullen) had her work cut out during the Ngaio Union Church nativity walk, ‘Christmas Live’, held last Sunday. Baby Jesus, unimpressed by his acting debut, required some gentle coaxing to enter into the joyful spirit of things. Billy the horse ate the props, the lamb made a puddle and drowned out the final ‘Amen!’ with her bleating. But minister Sue Brown says: “Everyone loved the joyful chaos! As well as the songs and the story.” Photo Colin McDiarmid.

Santa speaks out

No local trains From Thursday December 26 until Sunday January 5, all Johnsonville train services will be replaced by buses. KiwiRail has sent out fliers to some local residents to announce they will be working on track near their properties over that time. Track maintenance will be done between Khandallah and Raroa and Treescape is also removing and pruning various trees along the Simla Crescent to Raroa rail network. That work will occur from 7am6.30pm, and will also entail traffic management along Burma Rd.

By Glenise Dreaver

Santa yesterday took time out from directing the sleigh-loading for that vital journey from the North Pole on December 24. “There’s a knack,” he said, thumbing through the 189 pages of the Health and Safety At Work Act 2015 (updated 2017). Nothing on sleigh loading, though he pointed out that the Wikipedia guideline of about 60 percent of the load in front of a trailer was also a Good Idea for sleighs. One of this year’s most popular presents fortunately doesn’t take up too much weight. It’s the Harry Potter Invisibility Cloak, requested by many parents, he says. “I’ve had to break the news that it’s an optical illusion. “You need an app to make it work, and even then your children won’t temporarily disappear while they’re wearing it,” he said. “The odd parent seemed a bit disappointed.” As well as presents for the good children here - and the grown ups too - he packs a few Southland swede turnnips. (They’re a lot weightier than supermarkets’ limp plastic imitations. A lot.) “Kiwibank directors busily pulling our bank out of Johnsonville will all get a swede on Christmas morning,” Santa promises. “Perhaps two. Or three.” “As for the idjuts who stole the defibrillator from Alex Moore Park … two swedes each!” Santa last year awarded the Order of the Swede to organisers (“Organisers!” he snorts) of the Great Bus Debacle that started in July 2018 with the reorganisation of Greater Wellington’s bus system. He’s just holding fire to see how well their plans for a Fix are likely to go. “ I haven’t got to the bottom of the Karori Event Centre story yet,” he muses, juggling a turnip

Safe travel plan Road safety charity Brake is reminding partygoers and organisers to ensure everyone in their group gets to and from celebrations safely by planning their travel, and ensuring their designated driver stays sober. Brake’s ‘Driving for Zero’ campaign urges drivers not to drink any amount of alcohol or take any drugs before getting behind the wheel. The charity also urges family and friends to speak out and stop a loved one drink or drug driving. Caroline Perry, Brake’s New Zealand director says that because they support people bereaved and injured in crashes, they see the suffering that drink and drug driving inflict, and appeal to everyone to help stop it.

many good people out there – open-hearted, open-minded, generous and thoughtful, that he has no words, only his thanks on behalf of the rest of us. “And Merry Christmas. Happy New Year to you all,” he says.

We’re on a promise for 2020

Greg O’Connor MP for Ōhāriu

The brand new Willie Wonka float has been safely stowed away ready for its unveiling in Johnsonville's 2020 Christmas parade. Photo supplied.

Johnsonville Christmas Parade committee president Richard Maddren says they are grateful for the community’s understanding over the sad decision to cancel the parade on Saturday December 7. “High winds forced this in the interests of the safety of both participants and spectators,” he says. He added that as road closures have to be applied for months in advance, it wasn’t possible to postpone the event. “We begin planning in May, so the decision was not taken lightly,” he says, adding that they would like to thank all of the float builders and community groups for their support and understanding. Committee members and supporters worked especially hard in the week preceding the parade he says, collecting trailers, building floats, testing sound systems and making sure everything was in place. “The parade, which is largely funded by generous grants from community trusts, was not insured but we were very fortunate in that many suppliers had discounted their costs,” he says. They anticipate being able to refund some of the grant money when their final costs are available for audit, he adds. “In 19 years, this is believed to be only the second time the parade has been cancelled, both times by weather,” says Richard. With the floats broken down and in storage, people can rest assured the parade will be back in full swing, weather permitting, in 2020 Richard says.

As I stood at 5am listening to the wailing karanga at the opening and blessing of Waitohi, the new Johnsonville Library, I reflected on two things; firstly we are fortunate in New Zealand to have such a unique way of celebrating events, and secondly, this library and cafe is a pretty good Christmas present to the Northern suburbs. It goes with the $25 million dollars to be spent on Onslow College to rebuild rundown buildings, and also to cater for future population growth in area, especially Churton Park.

community asset that the brigade is, contributing in many ways beyond just firefighting, will be subsumed into Johnsonville and lost to Newlands. I am meeting regularly with the brigade and communicating with other organisations involved in the decisions making, including the Council, Fire and Emergency NZ who run fire brigades, the United Fire Brigades’ Association who speak on behalf of fire brigades, and Newlands/Paparangi residents, to find a satisfactory alternative or resolution.

I encourage everyone to visit their new library, which brings a much needed modern look to the precinct.

There may be an opportunity for those who want to get involved to assist, but be wary about just signing online petitions which can be about gathering Facebook likes for use later on by others.

It just highlights again the need for modernisation of our mall and shopping centre and I’ll be focusing on that project now I can stop hassling the Minister of Education to do something about Onslow College. Obviously the mall owners are a private company who will make their own decisions, but constant reminders do have an impact.

So we go into an exciting new year where the decision by our Jacinda Ardern-led government to invest $12 billion in long overdue infrastructure around the country, including rail and roads, will boost our economy.

Step forward for Karori Event Centre Work has begun on completing the Karori Event Centre’s kitchen facilities, thanks to the financial support of local pub and eatery, the Pickle Jar. As one of the first local businesses to provide sponsorship, it will have the kitchen facilities named in its honour. When the kitchen is finished, the trust will begin work on the toilets and dressing room, thanks to grants from Lion Foundation, Four Winds and Nikau Foundation and Terawhiti Charitable Trust, alongside other private donations. The base build was completed in January 2018 at a

cost of $2.56m and a further $800,000 is needed for fitout so it can open. Since it was completed, the need for the multi-purpose centre has grown. Karori has had its community hall demolished and lost three church halls - St Phillips, St Ninian’s and St Mary’s - due to sale and safety concerns. Access to Mackie Hall, Ward Allen VC Hall, and the dance room at the former Victoria Karori Campus have also been lost since its sale to Rymans, and in 2017, the earthquake-damaged St John’s Church Hall was demolished. Over the next few years, some large-capacity venues

in the Wellington CBD will also be out of action for earthquake strengthening, The Little Theatre in Lower Hutt, has also been found to be earthquake-prone and could be out of action for some time.. The trust is continuing fundraising and is working closely with the Wellington City Council to explore solutions. You can help by making a donation to the fit-out, or to sponsor one of the retractable seats, by visiting the webpage at www. KaroriEventCentre.co.nz. Donations can be made online and all donations are tax-deductible.

EYE ON CRIME

readers have their say...

Find out the WORD on the Street. Question: What do you think of the new library?

Hine Mauchline, Newlands “It’s absolutely stunning. A great deal of thought has gone into the building.”

Marty Pilott, Johnsonville It’s a marvellous area. Nicely laid out and the ESOL area is very close to the entry, with a whole load of new books.”

Sophie Crampton, Johnsonville “Super modern! It appeals to young people and it’s close to the pool and the cool cafe.”

In Johnsonville a flat in Bannister Avenue was left locked but with windows open while the victim was out shopping. A sma ll laptop computer was left placed under a window and could have been taken without entering the property. A flat in Phillip Street had mail taken from its letterbox by an offender who was seen collecting mail and packages from other nearby boxes. In McLintock Street two packages were delivered by courier and left in the entrance doorway at round 9.40am and are believed to have been stolen almost immediately. In Newlands a property in Ruskin Road, about to be vacated, was broken into, possibly through a side window left on a latch. A TV and a bone carving were stolen. A car parked in Miles Crescent during the night had a window smashed to gain entry and a dash-cam was reported stolen. In Khandallah a tool was used to pry open a side locked

window in an unsuccessful attempt to break into a house in Arakan Way. A smashed bedroom window on the side of a house in Madras Street gave access into the property during the afternoon. The intruder made a thorough search and the following items were stolen: an NZ passport and driver’s licence, a selection of electronic and sporting clothing. An electric bike was stolen from a garage in Cockayne Road. The owner had been working in the garage but went into the house to get a tool, leaving the garage door open for five minutes. When he returned the bike was gone. A Mondeo lent to a friend but not returned was reported as an unlawful taking but was later recovered in Kilbirnie. A red Toyota Auris hatchback parked overnight in Amritsar Street was broken into via a smashed window and a cushion stolen, while a green Subaru Legacy parked overnight in Onslow Road

was stolen. In Wilton a blue Subaru Impreza stationwagon parked overnight in Edgeware Road was stolen, then recovered in Te Aro with a damaged ignition barrel. The stereo and rear vision mirror were stolen and all four wheels had been exchanged. In Northland a restaurant in Northland Road was broken into when the offender used a rock to smash the glass in a side door to gain entry. Alcohol, cash from the till and a money box were stolen. In Thorby Street the contents of a courier package left in a letter box was stolen. In Wadestown a blue Honda Civic hatchback parked overnight in Barnard Street was stolen. In Kaiwharawhara an enclosed building under construction in Hutt Road was entered through a hole cut in a safety fence. Entry to the building was through a forced rear window. It is not yet known if anything was stolen.

Season’s greetings from our Wellington Council representatives

Brett’s Brief

Wellington Mayor, Andy Foster In this, my first message as Mayor of Wellington, it’s good to look back at what has been a massive year for the capital city. It was particularly pleasing this month to open the new Waitohi Community H ub after more than a decade of work, and great to see the

community embracing this wonderful new asset. T here a re m a ny more projects we are working on across the northern and western suburbs and we are looking forward to delivering over the coming year. Just some of them are bus priority, finishing Karori’s

event centre and working with Stride on the Johnsonville Mall. As the year draws to a close, I wish you all a Mere Kirihimete and hope you enjoy spending time with your families and loved ones. Have an enjoyable, safe and relaxing Christmas and New Year.

National Party List MP based in Ōhāriu

Rebecca Matthews, Wharangi Onslow Western Ward Meri Kirihitimete to you and thanks for the opportunity to represent our community for the next three years on Council – I won’t let you down! A special thanks to everyone who talked with me on the phone, at your doorstep, or

at a meeting over the election – it was great to hear your thoughts about what you want from our city. Wellington faces some big challenges, including getting our central library re-opened, starting to really Get Wellington Moving

with better public transport, and taking on the challenge of climate change. I’m looking forward to working with you to make all this happen. Firstly, though, I hope you all have the opportunity to spend time with family and

friends, and get some relaxation in this holiday season. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me at rebecca. matthews@wcc.govt.nz if you need anything or to let me know what’s on your mind!

Diane Calvert, Wharangi Onslow Western Ward At this time of year, the generosity of people never ceases to amaze me whether it be through volunteering, helping in their local community and or gifting to those needing a helping

hand over the holiday season. If you need a hand, reach out to the many organisations in your area. Whatever your circumstances, I wish everyone a very happy

holiday season and the opportunity to recharge for the New Year ahead. If you are reading this message, thank you also for being a reader of the Independent

Herald. It’s this type of local paper that helps inform and keep communities together in a positive way. Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year

Simon Woolf, Wharangi Onslow Western Ward Thank you all for your support this year. It has been greatly appreciated. I’d like to wish one, and all a great Festive Season, and

New Year, and especially all the volunteers who keep our community so vibrant. We also welcome in a new decade, with a new Mayor

and Council. It is my hope, and wish, that our city and it community thrives, and we continue to be one of the most liveable cities

in the world. Wishing you all success, health and happiness. Here’s to an absolutely fantastic 2020!

Malcolm Sparrow, Takapu Northern Ward Christmas is a special time of the year, and no doubt it is for you too. It has been my privilege to

work with the many great communities which make up the Northern Ward of Wellington. Thank you to all those in-

dividuals and groups whose tireless efforts continue to make this a great place in which to live.

I wish one and all a very Merry Christmas, a nice relaxing break, and all the best in the New Year.

Jenny Condie, Takapu Northern Ward Summer has arrived, inviting us to enjoy Wellington’s beautiful outdoors together. I wish you all a relaxing and joy-filled holiday break. Holidays let us unplug from daily life and reflect on what mat-

ters most to us. The sudden and tragic loss of life in Christchurch in March and at Whakaari/White Island last week remind us to appreciate our friends and whanau. While we may have different languages, traditions and aspi-

It is exciting to see this new facility open for people to enjoy over t he hol id ays. At this time we are often reminded of the challenges that many face. But along with this comes the many stor ies of people ma k ing a difference. I would like to thank all of the volunteers who have tirelessly

If you’re working over the holiday season, thank you. I hope you too get the chance for a decent, relaxing break over the year ahead.

Whether a big party, or a quiet, reflective time, with a large group or small, I hope you have a wonderful festive season and an enjoyable and relaxing holiday.

And here’s hoping it proves to be a great year.

The backdrop to our Christmas this year is coloured somewhat with the recent tragic events at Whakaari/White Island. Our hearts and thoughts remain with the people and families affected. And with the brave men and women, those in uniform and those not, who worked to rescue and comfort those affected, and to recover the bodies of those killed. Kia kaha. Whatever your plans, I wish you an enjoyable and relaxing break. Here’s hoping for a great summer for us to enjoy. If you’re travelling, take extra care and have a safe trip.

Whatever your hopes (or New Year’s resolutions) for the year ahead I wish you every success in realising them. We’re a small country that prides itself on the ability to offer real opportunities for people to get ahead and to achieve their dreams. Regrettably, reality has not necessarily been living up to the hype recently. In many ways it can feel like we’re living our part in some failed experiment. We need to recapture both the aspiration and the ability for people to get ahead. With the right approach we can be the greatest place in the world to live, work and raise a family. Merry Christmas!

An era ends at Paparangi By Glenise Dreaver

Clare Adams is discovering that retiring isn’t always an easy choice. The deputy principal of Paparangi School, she’s leaving after twenty seven years there and a wide variety of other experience before that. As you walk around the school with her, Clare’s clearly moved by goodbyes from the students. “I taught his father!” she says of one little boy. “Fortunately there’s no grandchildren arriving here yet … Principal Tracey Edwards says Clare has taught in every year group, becoming Deputy Principal in the mid 1990s. She has been a literacy leader, reading recov-

ery teacher, Board of Trustees staff rep, and a mentor teacher to many beginning teachers. She was also on the committee which introduced the adventure zone, and has committed to the school’s enviro focus, involved in plenty of tree plantings over the years. Clare has, says Tracey, worked with five principals, dozens of teachers and hundreds of children. “She has a knack for building relationships and what drives her is a passion for teaching kids to be the best they can be.” Clare herself admits to the odd dive into the toilet areas as emotion overwhelms her, but she’s also aware that 27 years is a long time and that

there are things to look forward to. There’s extended family in Spain, so a trip there – and to Portugal - is on the cards for 2020. “And my husband is keen to do Germany and Switzerland while we are there,” she says. “And I’ll be back relieving.”

Churton Park Community Carols By Brian Sheppard

with Enliven in Wellington Enliven creates elder-centred communities that recognises elders as individuals and supports them in a way that’s right for them. Each Enliven facility in Wellington boasts friendly and welcoming communities that exude warmth and homeliness.

In the Wellington region, Enliven offers:

• Woburn Home and Apartments, Woburn • Longview Home, Tawa

• Cashmere Home and Cashmere Heights Home, Johnsonville • Huntleigh Home and Apartments, Karori

Many of our Christmas traditions come from the northern hemisphere, where Christmas is cold. The weather on December 13 tried to create that atmosphere. It certainly wasn’t cold enough for snow but when the people of Churton Park came for their Community Association’s community carols evening at Amesbury School, many brought additional clothing and travel rugs. People sang traditional carols and modern Christmas songs under the guidance of Ross McMillan and the Salvation Army band and the Capital Harmony Chorus. But Christmas is a time for children and so the Churton Park School Choir also gave a few enthusiastic performances. When Ross McMillan asked for a volunteer to try

Residents at Enliven’s Cashmere Home and Cashmere Heights Homes have joined the pieces together to make Christmas wreaths with a twist. Over the past few weeks 72 wreaths, big and small, have been crafted by residents, staff and volunteers to adorn the Johnsonville homes in time for the festive season. “We used all the puzzles with missing pieces in the homes, which fits with our sustainability goals,” Cashmere Home and Cashmere Heights Home recreation team leader Linda Lankshear says. The puzzle pieces were glued onto cardboard shapes cut out in the shape of a wreath. They were then painted green and sprinkled with glitter before the paint dried. The wreaths were then adorned with other Christmas decorations, such as bells, bows and baubles. Linda says the activity attracted residents who might not usually take part in crafts to help out. It was also something residents with dementia could participate in because of the repetitive nature of gluing the puzzle pieces, Linda says. The smaller wreaths have been hung on residents’ doors at both of the rest homes, and the larger ones in common areas around the buildings. “It’s so good to walk down the hall and see them all,” Linda says. “The residents’ faces lit up when they saw the finished product, and they were so thankful

Cashmere Home resident Denise Smith helps to make some of the wreaths. when I took them around and put them on their doors.” Enliven’s Cashmere Home and sister site Cashmere Heights Home, both on Helston Road, Johnsonville, offer rest home, hospital and short-term respite and health recovery care. 100 Glorious Years of Song

Avoid tummy troubles this summer The warmer weather is a great time for families to head outdoors and host BBQ’s and get-togethers. The unfortunate thing is that often people are hosting food-borne illnesses too. Food poisoning is a risk in summer because of the increased temperatures which allow bacteria to multiply faster. To keep the belly bugs at bay, here are some tips on what you should and shouldn’t be doing with your food this summer. • Thaw frozen foods in fridge. Even though meat is frozen, bacteria can grow rapidly in a room temperature environment. • Not sure it’s good? Throw it out. If you aren’t sure about the safety of a particular food, throw it away. • Factor travel time into food safety. When planning out your summer menu, consider how long food will be in transport without refrigeration and plan accordingly. Pack perishable foods in the cooler first and then covering with ice. Since cold air sits low, it will help keep your food safely chilled longer. • Use clean dishcloths and sponges. If you’re reusing dirty dishcloths you’re really just playing a gross game of germ tag. • Avoid cutting raw meat on wood cutting boards. Use a different one to cut your fruits and veggies. • Keep dishes, counters and cooking surfaces clean Happy holidays!

Super bug incidence on the rise in New Zealand Crown Research Institute Environmental Science and Research is bringing attention to the impact of ‘super bugs’ on the health of New Zealand communities. ESR tracks many microorganisms and one particularly nasty family of super bugs is currently showing an increase. Super bugs are typically resistant to nearly all known antibiotics, and they are on the rise in New Zealand, reflecting a world-wide trend. ESR has a specialist Antibiotic Reference Laboratory in Wellington. It’s the only laboratory in the country responsible for

overall national surveillance of antimicrobial resistance among human pathogens (microorganisms that cause disease), on behalf of the Ministry of Health. ESR scientist and microbiologist, Dr Kristin Dyet, says one of the concerning emerging antibiotic resistant organisms of increasing public health concern in New Zealand is carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales (CPE). CPEs were first identified in New Zealand in 2009. In 2018, 93 distinct CPE were identified, compared to approximately 98 CPE so far this year. CPEs are typically resistant to nearly

all known antibiotics. Treatment options for CPE are limited and worryingly there are few new antibiotics in the development pipeline likely to have an impact soon. ESR’s scientists are at the forefront of some of the most difficult issues faced by the country. As the specialist centre for super bug surveillance, ESR’s role as a reference laboratory helps to identify rare and emerging resistant bacteria for hospital and community laboratories, and in doing so, collects data and generates valuable information for government and health agencies.

History at your fingertips Archives Online is part of a wider programme to make Wellington City Council’s archives more accessible and to offer our services online. You’ll be able to search our holdings, from anywhere with an internet connection, anytime. Many of our digitised records are available for download (check the licence to see what kind of use is permitted). You’ll also soon be able to ask us to digitise a record for you, for a fee, through the service. Wellington City Archives has over 800,000 items in its collections. The earliest records date back to 1840 and

the most recent cover the present day. Information about all 800,000 records (metadata) is being progressively added to Archives Online, along with a digital copy of a record, where one is available. So far, about 15% of the holdings are digitised and we’ll get them online over the next few months. We’ll keep adding material, so check back if what you’re looking for isn’t here yet. If you can’t find what you’re looking for online, the original records can still be viewed at City Archives’ Wellington Office, by arrangement.

Retired radio man Looking back... Des Wilson looks back… I began in radio as a New Zealand Broadcasting Service clerical cadet in the AMP Building on Broadway, Palmerston North A transfer to Head Office Commercial Programmes in September 1957 meant I worked at the Windsor Building at 49 Willis Street as a Programmes Officer. I well recall the large transcription discs of the serials which were so popular in those years: ‘Doctor Paul’, and ‘Portia Faces Life’. At the time there were about fourteen stations in the commercial network. I wrote short introductions for programmes like ‘Epilogue’ and auditioned records to be purchased. My two years at Head Office coincided with the change from 78rpm records to 45s and a real highlight was being involved in the setting up and eventual opening of station 2XB in Queen Street Masterton on St Patrick’s Day 1958. In that pre-television era, the station was initially on air evenings only and we pre-recorded the first hour of commercial radio for Masterton. In the 1960s, as 2ZD, Masterton became the birthplace of revolutionary women’s programming on New Zealand radio. After NZBC’s Prudence Gregory returned from observing the concept of women’s phone-in programmes in the USA, the Wairarapa, rather than a main centre was chosen for a pilot “Person-toPerson” telephone time fronted by the legendary Jessica Weddell. I am often asked about the greatest change I have seen in radio: I marvel at the ‘democratisation’ of radio – no longer does anyone have to pass an audition to go on air, many advertisers voice their own commercials and virtually any member of the public can be heard on any radio station at any hour of the day.

Foster the safe play It’s apparently a new era for the All Blacks - just with a familiar old face. The All Blacks have gone the easy route by picking Ian Foster as their coach. After four years as Steve Hansen’s understudy, it was now or never for the former Chiefs coach and so it will be. He beat out the people’s (and my) favourite, Scott Robertson for the job. Robertson will now stay with the Crusaders for the foreseeable future. Foster has had minimal success as a head coach at the Chiefs - just one final in which they were thrashed. That won’t really matter now as he

will have the best cattle but a tricky job in front of him. Unlike Steve Hansen in 2011 when he took over from Graham Henry, Foster must usher in change. Hansen came in with largely the same players, after a World Cup win with the demand of same again placed upon him. Foster comes in with the stench of the 2019 World Cup failure on him, at least by association. He has a fan base that can feel change was needed and it’s a group of supporters who clearly classify him as part of the old guard. The appointment is a tick in the

box for continuity and that has been a major factor in the All Blacks’ success over the past decade. The bold choice would have been Robertson, but the selection panel, unlike the players on the field, played this one predictably and safe. There is no doubt the country will support and fans will not turn on him immediately, but if standards are not maintained and victories recorded, then there will not be as much leniency from a potentially rabid public. It may be a dream job but there will be no real honeymoon period for Ian Foster.

Al-Ameen Fun Day By Brian Sheppard

The chilly early morning wind dropped and the sun came out for the popular Al-Ameen Community Fun Day at Alex Moore Park on December 14. While families enjoyed food and conversation and children played, teams from Al-Ameen, Rongotai, NZ Police and Upper Hutt took to the soccer field to play for the Al-Ameen Unity Cup.

The Al-Ameen team recognised that they hadn’t managed as much practice as their competitors and so sought inspiration from Liverpool’s star Egyptian player Mohamed Salah. (The ring-in was later uncovered as one of their own team, Sherif Osman, wearing a wig. This was, after all a fun day.) The Cup was won this year by NZ Police and awarded by MP Greg O’Connor.

Al-Ameen took this opportunity to present trophies of appreciation for the contributions of the previous Mayor Justin Lester and former Northern Ward city councillor Peter Gilberd. After combined team photos and prayers, participants and spectators left, congratulating the organisers for a great day out. Team tactics and planning will soon start again for the tournament and Fun Day in 2020.

Cricket nets upgraded Cricket enthusiasts young and old now have new nets to practice in following Onslow Cricket Club’s upgrade of the cricket nets at their home grounds in Nairnville Park in Khandallah. “The nets were damaged and unsafe and in dire need of an overhaul,” says junior cricket club spokesperson Samantha Bennett. “Thanks to a grant from New Zealand Community Trust (NZCT) the club was able to get new soft and wire netting to go along with the planned upgrade of the turf. “And just over a week ago, t h e t r a i n i ng fa c i l it y wa s open for business again in tip top shape,” she adds. The Nairnville training nets

are used by the entire local cricketing community during the season and pre season. Almost all of the club’s junior hardball teams use the nets on a scheduled weekly basis for team practices and the Y7-8 Rep teams also train along with several senior club teams each week. OCC also makes the nets available to the local community to enjoy the facility outside the scheduled training times and local children are often there a f t er school wit h f r iends. “Onslow Cricket Club is grateful to NZCT for their support and appreciates the hard work of its committee members, especially in the junior club, for making

this happen,” says Samantha. “Now everyone can enjoy a great summer of cricket!”

Tips for keeping your pet happy at Christmas time With Christmas being such a busy time of year the changes in routine can be very stressful for your pets. With this in mind, keep your pet’s routine the same – as best you can – such as meal times and exercise for your dog. If you are travelling with your pet bring something with them such as a favourite blanket which will have familiar smells on it and provide comfort. Be careful what gifts you stash under the Christmas tree, if there is something that smells tempting dogs will rip open paper and packaging to get to the goodies inside, chocolate is always tempting to pooches, but unfortunately

is toxic to them. Also toxic to dogs are grapes, macadamias and raisins so Christmas pudding and mince tarts are both off the menu. If you are having visitors over please make them aware of this, as well-intentioned treats can prove quite disastrous for your pet. Scraps need to be well wrapped and disposed of in a dog proof bin, chicken bones especially are important to keep away from your dog as they can cause blockages or splintering in the bowel. With these tips in mind may you and your furries have a safe and happy holiday season.
