Nita explores her new home
to a on her way with Azad Road to freedom : Nit sar sanctuary the WSPA-funded Balka
Earlier this year, thanks to WSPA supporters, Nita was rescued from the cruel blood sport of bear baiting and taken to a new life at the WSPAfunded sanctuary in Pakistan. Nita’s new life at the sanctuary, close to the town of Balkasar in the Punjab region of Pakistan, is about as different from her previous, miserable life as it is possible to get. Nita was rescued by Dr Fakhar-i-Abbas and his dedicated team from the Bioresource Research Centre (BRC), WSPA’s partner in Pakistan, but it was the generosity and concern of WSPA supporters that made it happen – so thank you, each and every one of you who helped. Bear baiting is a violent blood sport where dogs are trained to attack a bear that is often rendered defenceless by its owner pulling out its teeth and claws. The bear will be tied to a stake in the middle of an arena and crowds watch on as the dogs maul at the bear until a ‘winner’ can be declared and all bets settled. This hellish existence was Nita’s life for many years until we rescued her.
Rest and care Since her rescue a few months ago, Nita has been looked after in the quarantine area of the Balkasar sanctuary, building up her strength and recovering from her injuries. She has healed well, though will never recover the sight in one of her eyes.
Bears are adaptable The sanctuary’s quarantine area is right next to the main grounds where another seven rescued bears currently live. The close proximity means Nita was able to get used to the sounds and smells of the other bears before actually joining them. “Bears are by nature very adaptable,” Dr Fakhar told WSPA News. “Provided they have the right amount of food and space, they quickly become accustomed to each other.”
Aler t and adaptable: Nita gets used to the freedom of her new surroundings
A happy but camera-shy bear WSPA was there to capture Nita’s first moments in the sanctuary after being released into the main grounds. She bounded from the quarantine area into her wide open new home, but quickly became nervous and headed for the dense foliage. These pictures show Nita exploring the lushness and freedom of her new outdoor environment.
The team at the sanctuary did all they could to nurse them back to health, but their suffering was just too great and sadly, they passed away. Thanks to WSPA supporters, these two bears experienced great care and compassion in the last few weeks of their lives, far from the brutality and fear that had been their lives for so long.
Thank you
The fight goes on to save more bears
It’s thanks to your generosity that Nita is now able to enjoy her wonderful new life at the sanctuary. Nita’s recovery comes as happy news after the sadness of losing two male bears a few months ago, Sawan and Azad, who were rescued at the same time as Nita. Both Sawan and Azad were very weak from years of being forced to fight in bear baiting contests.
You’ve already made it possible for Nita and seven other bears to be rescued from bear baiting. Today, there are around 60 bears in Pakistan still suffering a life of violence, trauma and pain. The sanctuary is large enough to give a life-long home to every one of them and with your support, that’s exactly what we intend to do. WSPA NEWS | ISSUE 11

Stopping the dog meat trade
In the UK, dogs hold a firm place in the heart of the nation as ‘man’s best friend’. It is difficult to comprehend that in other parts of the world, dogs are farmed and slaughtered for meat; sold for human consumption. Yet it is not the companion status of dogs that makes the dog meat trade so cruel – it is the appalling conditions in which the dogs are farmed, transported and the often inhumane methods used for their slaughter. WSPA’s campaign co-ordinator, Lola Webber, wrote to some of you back in September, to tell you about the cruelty of the dog meat trade in South Korea – and to ask for your help in stopping it. A South Korean dog farm is often a hellish place, with row upon row of caged dogs, often forced to lie in their own waste, with many suffering from disease. When their time comes, many will be transported to market in cramped cages before being slaughtered. WSPA is determined to put a stop to the extreme cruelty of the dog meat trade in South Korea and has joined forces with two local organisations, Coexistence for Animal Rights on Earth (CARE) and the Korean Association for Animal Protection (KAAP) to do this. 4

Stopping the sufferin g: with your help we co uld expose the suffering of dogs an d put an end to the do g meat trade
APPEAL WSPA News caught up with Lola to find out what she saw during her trip to South Korea as part of her research into the dog meat trade… It’s a cold and grey day in South Korea. I’m not looking forward to my visit to a market where dog meat is sold, but I know I must go there.
The fate of puppies Some of the smaller puppies are caged separately. A few lucky ones may be bought as pets, others will be sold to farmers to use as breeding stock. At one point, I saw a dog-meat seller walk over to the caged puppies, take one out and stroke it before putting it back to await its fate. Behind the cages and in the backroom, I spot several massive cooking pots and a man blowtorching the fur off a recently slaughtered dog. I had found the source of the scorched fur I smelt earlier.
Mental trauma for many breeds
The stench of suffering I arrive at the market and I immediately see signs advertising dogs. There’s a horrible smell in the air, which I realise is that of scorched dog hair. That tells me dogs are being slaughtered very close by. I see cages – about a metre squared in size – being unloaded from trucks. Inside each cage, there are about four dogs crammed in on top of each other. They will have travelled this way, some for up to ten hours and without food or water, on their way to the market from the outlying dog farms.
Hellish conditions Upon arrival at the market, the dogs are transferred into larger ‘show’ cages the equivalent of a ‘shop window’ for consumers to browse and select the dog they wish to eat. The dogs huddle together – perhaps for warmth, perhaps to find some comfort. Who knows what they can anticipate, but their anxiety is obvious. Some of the dogs start to bark and are quickly silenced or reduced to whimpering by a swift blow with a metal rod. The seller sprays water in the show cage to wash away the dogs’ waste – they don’t want any potential customers being put off. A large slab of dog meat sits crudely on top of the show cage to show off the ‘product’ to passing shoppers. The dogs look depressed and withdrawn, but as I walk past the cages, a couple of the puppies come over to the bars, anxiously wagging their tails, craving some affection and attention. But that’s something these dogs have never had and will never experience. It’s truly heartbreaking to witness.
Kept for meat: A puppy waits alon e in its cage, star ved of love and care
It is a relatively quiet day at the market today. The Bok days, when dog meat is most popular, are in the summer, when hundreds of thousands of dogs are killed each week. Today, I would guess there are about a thousand dogs at the market. As a dog owner and an animal lover, coming to the market has been a truly horrendous experience. I know that it is important for me to be here – it is only by exposing the cruelty of the dog meat trade that we can persuade people to boycott the consumption of dog meat. With more and more South Korean people hearing our message, I firmly believe that with the help of WSPA supporters, we can end the demand for dog meat and this cruel trade for good.
You can help end the dog meat trade Lola’s account doesn’t make for easy reading, but to stop the dog meat trade, we have to expose the hellish cruelty and suffering the dogs endure. With your help, there is hope for the dogs of South Korea. WSPA supporters make it possible for our local partners, CARE and the KAAP, to campaign for the dog meat trade to be banned and more importantly, to end the demand for dog meat by exposing the cruelty involved.

LEGACY
Protect what matters to you
WSPA News has been talking to supporters who have made an amazing promise – they are so committed to helping end animal cruelty and suffering that they have decided to leave a gift to WSPA in their Will. When it comes to thinking about our Will, we all want to protect what matters to us after we are gone – from beloved family and friends to causes that are close to our hearts. By leaving a gift to WSPA in your Will, you can be sure of helping protect animals in the future from suffering and cruelty. As someone who loves animals, a gift in your Will – no matter how small or large – will help animals in need. It may even save animals’ lives. WSPA News spoke to two such supporters who are protecting what matters to them by leaving a gift to WSPA in their Will. Read their letters on the right about why they are making this amazing promise to help animals.
Free information pack
It can sometimes feel daunting to make or change your Will, so to make things easier, we’ve created a simple, free information pack containing everything you need. Written in plain English, the guide takes you through the different types of gifts to consider, explains the role of executors (including WSPA’s own Executor Service) and solicitors and provides the exact wording you’ll need when leaving a gift to WSPA.

URGENT APPEAL
Zvika Tamuz is the founder of Pegasus – our partner organisation in Israel – and a man who devotes his life to looking after sick and injured donkeys and horses in Israel. Zvika founded Pegasus because he could no longer tolerate the poor treatment of the working donkeys and horses in this region, seeing so many of them overworked, abused or abandoned. Zvika decided he had to do something about it and thanks to the generosity of WSPA supporters, he has been able to rescue and rehabilitate many donkeys and horses since then. This man creates miracles all the time, saving the lives of donkeys and horses that have suffered greatly. WSPA News finds out about just one of the many donkeys saved by Zvika…
Rose’s story
Rose is an elderly female donkey, who was abandoned by her owners and found starving and badly injured. Her face and ears had been torn apart by a pack of wild dogs. She was in desperate need of specialist veterinary treatment – without it, she could have died from her wounds.
Zvika to the rescue
Within minutes of being called, Zvika was on the scene to help. Zvika’s phone is on at all times and he always comes to the

assistance of donkeys in need, no matter how far away they might be, or whatever time of day or night. Zvika carefully transported Rose to the WSPA-funded Pegasus shelter. Following the vet’s instructions, he was then able to administer emergency care and treatment for this anxious and injured donkey – including antibiotics, bandages and pain relief – to give her injuries the chance to heal.
Good recovery
Rose still needs constant attention, but she is making a good recovery at Pegasus. Thanks to your support, Zvika was able to make sure that this donkey has the very best of care, as you can see from the picture of her below on the right.
Happy ending – thanks to you
Thanks to Zvika’s dedication and the treatment he administered, made possible by your generosity, Rose should be fit and well enough to leave her days of trauma and pain far behind. “It would not be in Rose’s best interests to re-home her as a working animal, so she will be looked after at Pegasus for the rest of her life,” reports Alistair Findlay, WSPA’s Middle East programmes manager.
Healed and healthy: Rose has recovered well, thanks to treatment and care at Pegasus, funded by WSPA supporters
URGENT APPEAL Devoted to donkeys Thanks to donations from WSPA supporters and the efforts of Zvika, Rose’s life was saved. “Zvika’s work and dedication is truly inspiring – he is making an incredible difference to the wellbeing of horses and donkeys in the region. Rose’s story is a truly heart-warming example of what WSPA supporters can help us achieve,” says Alistair.
The cost of a miracle
Zvika and and his small team care for up to one hundred donkeys a week and each one has different needs. Some are badly malnourished, some have parasite infestations and some, like Rose, have serious wounds that need specialist treatment.
With so many donkeys in need, a donation from you to WSPA could make it possible for Zvika to respond when he gets the next call for help. Zvika has the skill and the dedication and through WSPA, you can make it possible for him to carry on, saving donkey after donkey. Each donkey saved is another little miracle made possible by you. It costs hundreds of pounds a day for Zvika to run Pegasus and it’s a constant struggle to keep it going – he is totally reliant on the generosity of WSPA supporters. Zvika does all of this with the help of his small team and the use of one rather old truck to rescue the donkeys in. Please give what you can today and your donation could make it possible for one more donkey to be rescued, one more life to be saved.

WSPA News is proud to bring you news of the dramatic rescue of a one-year-old bear cub in India, spared from a life of captivity and suffering as a ‘dancing’ bear in India, thanks to WSPA supporters. The rescue was the culmination of months of planning and undercover investigations by WSPA’s partner in India, the Wildlife Trust of India (WTI), following a tip-off that two cubs were for sale in the Jharkand region of India. WTI teamed up with informers and forestry officials to create a daring plan to free both cubs.

Wednesday:
investigating the tip-off
raid and rescue the only option
Our informer, who we cannot name for his own safety, arrives in the village to investigate the tip-off that two cubs were for sale. As a stranger, the bear sellers treat him with suspicion and it takes him the whole day to convince them that he is a ‘genuine’ buyer from a neighbouring province. Eventually the owners tell him to come back the next day to see the cubs and make a deal.
Tuesday: locating the bear cubs
Our informer is kept waiting most of the day, and there is still no sign of the cubs, but he uses this time to map out the village in case a raid is needed to rescue the bears. Finally, as night falls, the first owner takes him to see his bear. The cub is about a year old, reasonably healthy with a glossy coat, but the man has already pierced this young bear’s sensitive muzzle and knocked out his canine teeth in order to render him less able to defend himself and so easier to train.
The next morning our informer returns to the village to try to speak to the second owner about the other young bear. While chatting to him, our informer senses this man is once again suspicious of his interest in the cubs. It is illegal to capture and sell wild bears here so there’s a good chance the men will take off with both cubs if they sense things are not as they seem. It is clear to our informer that the bears need to be rescued right away. At WTI head quarters in Delhi, a field officer (who also cannot be named for his safety) is awaiting our informer’s call and gets ready to fly out to join the rescue operation first thing the next morning…
Thursday: raid plan
The WTI field officer travels all day to reach our informer, who updates him on the situation. “Our informer felt the only option was to catch the owners unawares with a raid”, the WTI officer later explains.
UPDATE
Friday: raid saves bear cub
The team works with the forest department to pull together a raid and rescue plan. At the same time, two other informers arrive at the village to keep an eye on the movements of the two owners and provide constant feedback to the rescue team, taking great care to avoid discovery.
Late afternoon:
One of the informers leads two forest staff, in plain clothes, to a house where they have tracked down the two men. The rest of the team wait nearby and move in at speed when the informer calls out to them. Both owners make a run for it, fleeing into the forest and taking the second bear cub with them. Inside the house, the team find the first cub chained up. They set about freeing him and check the young bear over for signs of injury or suffering. It is now dark outside and too difficult as well as risky to pursue the fugitive owners into the forest. “After we’d checked over the bear cub, we took him with us under the cover of darkness, so we were away from the area – and any danger of an attempt to recapture the bear – as quickly as possible,” the WTI officer said.
The rescued cub is now being cared for by the local authorities, who are looking for a safe and suitable home for him.
Your support means progress
WTI is now closely monitoring this region of India and their trusted informers are primed to report back any sighting or reports of the fugitive owners or the other bear cub. WSPA supporters like you make it possible for WSPA and WTI to protect bear cubs from being sold into a brutal and traumatic life as a tourist attraction, made to ‘dance’ to earn money for those who buy them. These young, vulnerable animals are in constant danger from poachers who will take them from the wild and the care of their mothers. A bear cub will be beaten into submission until it learns to ‘dance’ on the command of its captor. But because of the help we receive from WSPA supporters, we are making real progress in protecting bear cubs from being poached from the wild and nowadays, the sight of bears ‘dancing’ is almost a thing of the past. In fact, we believe that bear dancing is almost stamped out in India, happening only in remote, rural parts of the country. Today, we think a handful of bears are still enduring this traumatic life, down from the thousands we estimate were involved just a few years ago.
Just one bear suffering in this way is one bear too many, and with your continued help, WSPA and our partner, WTI, are determined to end bear dancing in India for good. Though we are delighted to have made it possible for this one bear cub to be rescued, the second bear cub in our story is still in captivity.
Bear trading hotspot
Forest department officials also confirmed what WTI and WSPA have suspected for some time: that the Jharkhand region of India (where our recent rescue took place) could emerge as the latest hub for bear dancing and the trade in stolen bears. Bear owners (kalandars) appear to be moving to the state, under the impression that this rural area offers a safe haven for their way of life.
Help the fight to end poaching and protect bear cubs
As this story shows, the struggle for the freedom of India’s bears is not over yet. Protecting bears from being sold into a life of captivity is unpredictable work for our teams on the ground, and often involves great risk to those who assist us. Your support is now more important than ever, so that WTI can continue their work to prevent the poaching and sale of cubs and stop this terrible practice at its root. Together we can help keep cubs safe and in the wild where they belong.
Thank you A huge thanks to all WSPA supporters who took part in our Bear Cub Raffle to raise money to protect bear cubs from being forced to dance. Together you helped raise over £260,000.

Speaking out for animals Banning wild animals in circuses
Thousands of you have spoken out for the welfare of animals in 2011 by adding your voice to campaigns run by WSPA and other animal welfare organisations whose goals we support. Read on to find out more about how you’ve helped each campaign.
atalonia Last ever bullfight in C In circuses, wild animals are forced to endure periods of close confinement, deprived of their natural environment. Almost a thousand of you wrote to your MP asking them to vote for an outright ban on wild animals in circuses. Thanks to your actions, most MPs voted in favour of putting in place a total ban. Although this does not automatically become law, it means that the UK government will be forced to push forward on the issue, given the strength of support for a total ban.

No appetite
The last ever bullfight in Spain’s Catalonia region took place on 25 September, thanks to the success of a huge public campaign to ban this cruel blood sport. WSPA supporters helped make this happen as over 140,000 people from around the world signed up to our campaign, putting pressure on Catalonia’s politicians to pass legislation to end bullfighting. The last bullfight ended centuries of cruelty to bulls in the name of entertainment.
WSPA political adviser Ian Cawsey said: “The result of this debate and vote mean that the Government’s current position on wild animals in circuses is completely unsustainable. “There’s absolutely no appetite, from MPs or the public, to see wild animals be used in circuses in the 21st century. The Government needs to take decisive action now, to outlaw wild animals from the big top.”
whaling Helping put a stop to
Can you imagine the distress of being packed into a hot, cramped, filthy cage for days on end, with little food, water or rest? It’s a cruel reality suffered by millions of farm animals every year as they are transported over long distances in Europe, on their way to be slaughtered.
One million names needed
The 8 hour campaign, backed by WSPA, argues that live animals should never be transported for more than eight hours. Many WSPA supporters have signed the 8 hour petition, but more names are needed to reach the target of one million. With this number of names, we can ask the European Commission to impose a law that prevents any farm animal being transported for more than eight hours. A huge thank you to everyone that’s signed up so far. If you haven’t shown your support, you can still take action to stop animals suffering and add your name to the campaign today at 8hours.eu. 12

You showed that you will not put up with cruelty to whales when thousands of WSPA supporters contacted President Obama and the US Government, urging them to threaten Iceland with penalties unless the country agrees to end its whale hunting. Stopping this cruel practice could help save hundreds of whales from a traumatic and painful death.
Progress
During the past few months, more than 53,000 WSPA supporters made their voices heard and contacted President Obama. The latest news is that the United States will start to use diplomatic measures, but not economic sanctions, to dissuade Iceland’s commercial whaling activities. Thanks to WSPA supporters, the US is taking steps in the right direction to help protect these magnificent creatures from cruelty and suffering.

Last year we wrote to WSPA supporters asking you to take action online to urge the South Korean Government to push through a bill that could stop the cruel practice of bear being farmed for their bile. Over 11,000 supporters in the UK signed up.
Supporter impact
The strength of supporters’ voices speaking out against bear bile farming is having an impact. British Foreign Office Minister Jeremy Browne MP and the Rt Hon Sir John Stanley MP have both been in touch with WSPA to say that they want to help push forward the South Korean bill to end this cruel practice. Mr Browne has personally written to the authorities in South Korea and told us he intended to bring it to ministers’ attention during his recent visit. Mr Browne described bear bile farming as an “abhorrent practice” and praised WSPA’s efforts to help animals in the South Korean region. The Rt Hon Sir John Stanley MP has told us he wants to help present WSPA’s petition asking for the bill to be passed to the South Korean Ambassador.

Millions of animals such as sheep and cows are shipped live over long distances from Australia to overseas destinations every year. As in Europe, animals suffer from disease and trauma during their long journey, only to be slaughtered upon arrival. 170,000 WSPA supporters across the world joined WSPA’s Global Humame Chain campaign, calling for an end to the transport of all live animals from Australia.
Strong message to MPs
We’ve been asking WSPA supporters to upload their photo with their arms outstretched to the site humanechain.org.au, to virtually ‘join hands’ with other supporters around the world who are against this cruel and unnecessary practice. All the photos have been linked together to form a huge chain, which WSPA has presented to the Australian Government a few months ago. This proves to them that thousands of people across the world want Australia to stop the suffering of so many animals and end the live export trade for good. Thank you to all of you who joined the Global Humane Chain to try to make a positive difference for animals.

N W O R U O Y T HOS Y T R A P A E T A P P U C Y M N I NOT As the nights draw in and the days get colder, we are all spending more time indoors at this time of year. Winter is the time of year for dairy cows to shelter indoors too, but WSPA’s Not in my Cuppa campaign is determined to fight the mega-dairies that would keep them indoors 365 days a year. So whilst you keep warm with a pot of steaming tea and a comforting cake or three, why not invite a few friends around and turn it into a Not in my Cuppa afternoon tea party to raise funds for WSPA? Maggie Waldon did just that. She is a WSPA supporter who had great fun organising a Not in my Cuppa tea party in September this year, which she hosted at her house. Maggie invited her friends and raised a total of £150 on the day through selling cakes and asking her guests for a donation. Maggie’s pet dog Maisy (pictured left) was the guest of honour, who looked on longingly at the afternoon tea goodies on display.
Cows under threat
With your support, WSPA’s Not in my Cuppa campaign is determined to protect the welfare of dairy cows in Britain and make sure that factory milk from battery cows doesn’t find its way onto our supermarket shelves. By hosting a Not in my Cuppa tea party for WSPA, you could help us do just that, just like Maggie did.
Easy to organise
WSPA have put together a step-by-step guide to help you organise and host your Not in my Cuppa tea party, with ideas on how you can raise funds for WSPA on the day. We’ve also included materials, such as a poster and invitations, to help make your tea party a success.

Dragons’ Den businesswoman backs Not in my Cuppa campaign Some of you may recognise star of Dragons’ Den, Deborah Meaden, who is supporting WSPA’s Not in my Cuppa campaign. As a leading businesswoman and TV celebrity, Deborah has lent her considerable expertise to WSPA’s latest report: Weighing up the Economics of Dairy Farms. The Dragons’ Den star says that the business case for mega-dairies is based on “high risk economic guesswork” – the sort of investment idea that she would never say yes to. Deborah’s expert contribution has been highly influential in the fight against mega-dairies, resulting in the issue being widely reported in the press.
Mega-dairy approved in Wales
At the time of going to press, plans for a 1000 cow mega-dairy in Powys, Wales, have just been conditionally approved. This shows that mega-dairies are no longer just a threat, they are becoming a reality. Your support of our Not in my Cuppa campaign is more important than ever in the fight to keep cows in fields and not in factories.

SSIC A L C S ’ S I R H C AKE C E G N O P S VICTORIA From biscuits to bread, meringues to macaroons, afternoon tea is all about indulgent treats. For a burst of inspiration on what to bake for your Not in my Cuppa afternoon tea party, we asked WSPA supporters to send in their favourite recipes. It was a tough choice, but we’ve picked a winner – Chris from Wembley Park, London, whose recipe for a classic victoria sponge cake (just like his grandma used to bake) is easy to make and is sure to be a hit.
The ingredients you’ll need for the cake:
200g (7oz) caster sugar 200g (7oz) butter, well softened at room temperature 4 medium-sized (or 3 large) free-range organic eggs, beaten 200g (7oz) self-raising flour 1 tsp baking powder 2 tbsp free-range organic milk
The ingredients you’ll need for the filling : 100g (3.5oz) butter, well softened at room temperature 140g (5oz) icing sugar, sifted 250g jar good-quality strawberry jam
How to make the cake:
Heat your oven to 190C/fan or 170C/gas mark 5. Butter two 20cm sandwich tins and line with non-stick baking paper. In a large bowl (or use a food mixer), beat all the cake ingredients together until you have a smooth, soft batter. Divide the cake mixture between the tins, smoothing the surface with a spatula or the back of a spoon. Bake for about 20 mins until golden and the sponge springs back when pressed. Turn the cakes out onto a cooling rack and leave to cool completely.
How to make the filling :
Beat the butter until smooth and creamy, then gradually beat in the icing sugar. Spread the buttercream over the bottom of one of the sponges, top it with jam and sandwich the second sponge on top. Dust with a little icing sugar before serving. Why not make Chris’s classic victoria sponge cake to either raffle or cut up and sell by the slice? You can make this cake up to two days before your tea party if you store it in an airtight container.
