SIMON PIACENTE
The Village mourns the sudden loss of tennis professional Simon Piacente, known affectionately as “Coach Simon.” Simon began working for the Village of Western Springs Recreation Department’s tennis program in 2009.
In 2020, Simon became the Director of the tennis program. He created the popular “Coach Simon’s Adult Tennis Drills” and continued to grow his adult tennis programs, which were very popular. He worked to accommodate participants’ schedules, offered make up lessons to those that needed them, and invested time and energy into ensuring a positive experience for all participants. Simon taught lessons three nights a week, and on Saturday mornings.
Simon also took the reins of the youth tennis program. He trained, scheduled, and coached the Village’s tennis instructors, and was an inspiration to them. His instructors returned year after year - improving their teaching skills, and teaching programs at higher skill levels. He would show his appreciation to staff and students by bringing popsicles to the final week of each tennis season and organizing an end of the season instructor celebration.
Through his abundance of infectious energy and a passion for passing along his love of tennis, he built the best public tennis program in the Midwest. He accomplished it by crafting classes for all ages and levels of ability and infusing upbeat music into the on-court sessions with his famous playlist.
Simon was heavily involved in planning of the new tennis courts at Spring Rock Park. He helped lead the charge to make sure Western Springs had new and beautifully maintained tennis courts incorporated into a modernized tennis center that includes covered seating and stadium quality lighting. When players had issues of noise coming from other areas of the park interfering with their tennis experience, he started a campaign for a sound curtain to be installed on the south side of the courts. He also spearheaded a fundraising campaign to see the project through to completion.
Simon’s unexpected passing leaves a huge hole in the tennis community in Western Springs and beyond. The Village offers sincere condolences to his family and friends.
