EDITOR’S LETTER
Carolina Magazine 12
I
s it possible that summer is already over? Hopefully all of you had as good a time this past summer as I did. Although I won’t miss the heat all that much, I’m already looking forward to next summer. However, I can’t complain too much because this only means that football season is here, which makes me a huge fan of the fall. So, with this issue, we thought it would only be right that we talk a little bit about the upcoming ACC season and some of the matchups you can expect to see. I’m not a huge fan of any one particular school in our area, even though I grew up here; I’m just a fan of good football. So, whether you pull for a particular team or you’re just a fan of football like me, be sure to take in a game this fall, in person or at your favorite watering hole. The return of football season also means that the students are back in the area. This always makes things interesting. On the one hand it’s great to see the downtown area as packed on the weekends at it has been recently, but on the other hand sometimes I just miss my space. This might just be me, but it seems like Raleigh has a lot of different things to offer for entertainment these days. So, I’d like to take a moment to encourage you all to continue going out, but look to broaden your horizons just a bit

Go Green with Solar Power Apple’s new IPhone 3G is a big success with one little problem... the battery life. You’d be lucky if you got a full day’s usage if you turned off 3G, which is main the reason to get a new IPhone in the first place. Well, the guys over at Mobile Fun engineered a line of Solar Powered cases to combat the power problem. Not only does it protect your IPhone, but it can fully charge your phone and then recharge the built in 1500 mAH battery through the front mounted solar panel, or it can use a mini USB. www.mobilefun.co.uk
Waterproofing on Another Level Wouldn’t it be cool if there were some magical liquid that you can apply to your cell phone and make it waterproof? Wait, there is such a liquid; it’s called Golden Shellback coating! There’s not a lot of information about how the process is done and it’s not available to the public yet, but come on, this is amazing. Considering the fact that you can barely sneeze on a cell phone and weird things start to happen, this will change the way we treat our electric devices forever! If you get a chance, go to their website and watch the demonstration video. Cool stuff. www.golden-shellback.com
Surfing While Flying? Traveling just got a little more interesting. Remember how bored you were flying from the East Coast to the left coast? The on flight movie was terribly dull or kid friendly, or you were stuck beside some traveling salesperson who would not shut up about some product you would never buy. Well, Delta will soon offer its customers broadband Wi-Fi access on board their domestic fleet of more than 330 aircraft. Delta will be joining Aircell to provide this service to its customers at a flat fee of $9.95 on flights 3 hours or less, and $12.95 on flights more than 3 hours. Great news for all of us internet junkies.
Portable Printer So, you’re running errands and you forgot a document at your office. Normally you’d have to go back and get it, but now if you have that document emailed to your BlackBerry you can just print it off with Printstik, a portable Bluetooth printer. The Printstik fits in the palm of your hand and is a great accessory to have in your laptop bag. Currently the printer only works with PCs and BlackBerry devices and has a price tag of $299.99.
Getting There is Half the Fun Remember that show that had the black Pontiac Trans-Am that talked to you and could drive by itself? Well, they haven’t invented the car yet, but this is the next best thing. The Knight Rider GPS by Mio is very similar to the HUD from the popular TV series. It uses SiRFInstantFixIII GPS technology which can quickly pinpoint your location. That’s great, but the best part about this GPS unit is that it uses the actual K.I.T.T voice while synthesizing the audio with an LED that’s red! Available soon for $269.99.

hen I was asked to review the Raleigh-based hip hop group, Inflowential, I hit up their myspace, downloaded some tunes and got to work. Let me start by saying, I am not a critic; I’m a musician. However, this particular assignment brought out the critic in my “musician”. The tune “Do you like me” was like the ghost of hip hop past taking me back to the 1991 Haze family reunion. My older cousins and drunk uncles blasting the Fresh Prince’s “Summertime” from the turntable on the front porch. It was great; loved the flutes. It’s pure, smart, organic hip hop, but it’s boring. It’s like a run-on sentence. The essence of the message was lost in the delivery—I think. For having 6 people in a band; I was expecting a bit more texture, a bit more color, a bit more dynamics—frankly…a bit more. The hooks were interchangeable. They all sounded the same, drawn out, monotonous and repetitive. As for the atmosphere, who hasn’t been in a backpacker’s basement in Brooklyn, burning incense at 1:48am, bobbing your head to his laptop. It’s a great place for like 1 song, but come on, most non musician types have never been there, so take us to Paris on the next track. I'll even settle for Durham. All is fair in love and print, so in all fairness, I must say these guys have a kick ass live show that makes up for what’s lacking in the studio and that’s more than you can say for most. My advice to any rapper is this: If your voice is your instrument, train it. Being witty is not enough. Remember, the pros all have vocal coaches because companies are investing millions of dollars in them and they wanna make sure they are getting their money’s worth. Raw talent must be polished in order to shine. It’s not just what you say, it’s how you say it. A CD is not an audio visual presentation, its just an audio one. The tone and inflection that u choose to paint your words with shows us what you mean. Jay-Z gave you the blue print. Don’t hate the messenger. Artist: The Love Language www.myspace.com/thelovelanguage The Love Language is by far one of my favorite bands from Raleigh. I can hardly wait to tell my friends that I was listening to their record way before they were the biggest act in the country. To me, the voice of Stuart McLamb captures the emotional solitude of Morrissey and blends it with the pop cockiness of The Killers’ Brandon Flowers. Full of big guitars, tambourine choruses and even horns, the Love Language seem to have their eyes set on success. I recommend this band for everyone that’s looking for a new sound. Their newest release is a great summer album that makes you roll the windows down and turn it up. Recommended Track : Lalita
Artist: Kooley High www.myspace.com/kooleyhigh Kooley High cite their roots as having been born and bred in Raleigh, on the bricks of NC State University to be exact. Consisting of five different band members that each have their own unique sound, Kooley High reminds me of great hip-hop like Kanye West, Notorious B.I.G. and Lauryn Hill. To top it all off, their newest release is produced by Raleigh’s own 9th Wonder, so you know that it’s going to sound great. I recommend this group for everyone and anyone that loves well-produced smart hip-hop that will catch your ear and keep playing in your head after the song is over.

We’ve all been there before. You know, you’ve been out partying with friends, it’s closing time and you’re not quite ready to go home because you have the late night munchies. What do you do? Well, you can hit up one of my favorite late night destinations for a meal that’s delicious and nutritious! IHOP - Come on! It’s an American icon. It’s 2AM and you’re hungry as a hostage! Where do you go? IHOP! You have to get the 2x2x2, two eggs, two buttermilk pancakes, and two strips of bacon. All I can say is, “Delicious and nutritious!”

I’m invisible. (Really?) Can you see me? (Yes) How about tomorrow night? You should stop drinking! (Why?) Because you are driving me home. You see my friend over there? Those are the most beautiful eyes I have ever seen.” Hands you the $20 and walks away. Can I take your picture? (Why?) Because I want Santa to know exactly what I want for Christmas.

Armadillo Grill - I went there a few years ago and now it’s a regular late night destination. I usually get 2 steak soft tacos, but if I’m really hungry I’ll add some chili con queso dip and chips. Again I say, “Delicious and nutritious!”
Snoopy’s - All I can say is, “2 hotdogs, ketchup, mustard, and chili.” Enough said.
Harris Teeter - That’s right, I said, “Harris Teeter!” Think about it, it’s open 24-7, and you can get anything you want!
Cookout - This is adventure in and of itself with the long lines and party people trying to eat. Nevertheless, if you want a burger after 2AM, this is my favorite place. - Dop

Finding The Right Guy
T
here are many reasons for winding up with the wrong guy, but if you’re willing to analyze it a little bit then it just may be possible to figure out what you can do to find the right guy for you. So, why do women find it so hard to ask a man out? Well, taking the initiative to ask someone out is a bold move and one must have a lot of self-confidence. However, even with self-confidence it’s important to have realistic expectations. Celebrities are as out of reach as the planets in our galaxy. Likewise, someone who’s taken, whether they’re dating, engaged or married should be firmly put in the friend box. Consider it accumulating healthy karma. Ok, so you’ve found a guy. He’s great - kinda quiet, gets carried away when he talks about sports and his dog, makes a mean pot roast, shows you his collection of books, in short, someone who has potential - how do you get up the nerve to ask him out? It all goes back to confidence. By definition confidence is the ability to be positive about yourself and the outcome of a situation. So, you need to make sure that whatever happens, whatever his answer is, you can tell yourself that you are able to handle it, and remember that no matter what he says, it’s not a reflection of you as a person. If fear of rejection is more than you can bear, then maybe you’d be better off not asking someone out, because there’s always going to be a risk of rejection

Q
: Ok, I’m going to give this a shot. Dr. Phillette. I’m a 47-yearold single dude of five years. Married once for 15. I’ve been searching for relationship for 3 years now. I’m on the internet dating service and met several girls. I’m considered handsome and a lot younger than my age. I’ll just get to the point. I met a gal on the internet 2 months ago. We got together at a nightclub and saw the band Crush, which is my favorite local band as well as hers. We talked and had a great time. After the show, I escorted her back to her car, we chatted some more, and she said she would like to get together again. That was 2 months ago. Since then it seems like all she wants to do is communicate via IM, text, and email. I have asked her at least 10 times since Crush to go out, but she always has a good excuse not to. I stepped back from the IM, text, email deal for a few days and she still sent IM, email and texts. She even sent me an email about Crush playing again, and I responded, “Great let’s go.” Well, since then she has not responded back, but she has sent several emails and IM for general conversations. Have I lost ya yet? Ok, what’s the deal here? Is she interested or not? Now, I haven’t told her I want a relationship because I didn’t want to be pushy,
but I have mentioned how attractive she is, and how I admire her family values and so forth. Based on what I just wrote, can you give me some feedback on how I should view this? I’m really interested in this girl. Confused 47-year-old dude. : Confused: Wow. I’d be confused, too. While this sucks to hear, I’m just gonna come out and say it. I don’t think she’s interested in you. Well, at least, not romantically. She may have great conversations with you, and she may value your opinion about things, but for one reason or another, she just isn’t interested. And trust me, I know she says that she’s busy... But Hell, who isn’t?! You’re busy, I’m busy. I run a retail store, bartend 3 nights a week, and I DO maintain some semblance of a social life. However, if I’m interested in a guy, they’re gonna see me as often as I can help it. To top things off, you guys have a common interest. This band, Crush. She brought it up to you that they were going to be playing, which is a nice, friendly thing to do. The fact that you extended a date offer, and she didn’t even mention it... That’s really the clencher. If you want to keep a friendship with her, then that’s up to you, but any sort of relationship beyond that is probably out of the question. She’s completely ignoring any of your attempts at a romantic relationship, so either be comfortable with a friendship, or move on. Good luck either way : )
A
when it comes to dating. So, let’s say that you’ve talked yourself into the right frame of mind. It’s the right time, you’re standing in front of him, and he’s smiling into your eyes… just do it. Don’t beat around the bush either. Most people aren’t good at reading between the lines - they either get it wrong, or they don’t get it at all, so you should spell it out to him, that you’re asking him out. “Joe, if you’re not doing anything this evening, do you want to go out with me?”, or “Joe, how about catching a movie with me this Saturday?” I think you get the picture. It’s important to make it clear to him that you want to hang out, just the two of you, and that this is a getting to know you > Send Questions for Alanna to askalanna@carolina12.com process. Be cool. Don’t build it up too much in your head by imagining scenarios. Be sure to firmly remind yourself that you haven’t even gone on a date yet. But say he says no, what then? CAROLINA12’S SPORTS
ACC: It’s Time to Change Trends By Paul Samuels
T
he Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) was supposed to take over College Football with the addition of the three Big East teams, but it has not manifested to date. The ACC is 1 – 8 in Bowl Championship Series (BCS) bowl games with the loss in the Orange Bowl by the Virginia Tech Hokies to the Kansas Jayhawks (24 – 21). The other bowl eligible teams went 2 – 5 (Wake Forest Demon Deacons and Boston College Eagles being the only winners) making the total record 2 – 6. The statistics do not get much better when you add in the fact that the conference went 4 – 9 vs. BCS conference teams last year. This season shows some promise with the talented Clemson Tigers from the Atlantic Division. Depending on the publication you pick up this year, the Tigers should be a Top 5 and no worse than a Top 10 team in the preseason polls. The Tigers show case two of the top running backs in the country, James Davis (SR) and C.J. Spiller (JR). After Clemson, it appears to be a coin toss between Wake Forest, Florida State Seminoles and Virginia Tech as to who is the second best team in the ACC. Virginia Tech has a great opportunity to repeat as the Coastal Division champions even during its rebuilding season because of the teams it must play in 2008. The Hokies only have to play one of the other projected top 4 teams, Florida State in Tallahassee. Clemson, Wake Forest and Florida State must battle it out in the Atlantic. Florida State is the only one of the four that has to play all of the other teams. After that, it gets a little cloudy. In my opinion, any team could beat any team on any given Saturday. There are some teams that will be striving to just make a bowl game and that will be a great success. The ACC must step up this season to gain back some respect on the national stage and try to show the promise the schools’ fans thought they would see from expansion in 2004. It must improve on the dismal bowl record from 2007 and needs to reverse its BCS bowl game performance to improve its image as a major conference.
Atlantic Division Predictions 1.Clemson University Tigers 2.Florida State Seminoles 3.Wake Forest Demon Deacons 4.Maryland Terrapins 5.North Carolina State Wolfpack 6.Boston College Eagles
Coastal Division Predictions 1.Virginia Tech Hokies 2.Miami (Florida) Hurricanes 3.North Carolina Tar Heels 4.Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 5.Duke Blue Devils 6.Virginia Cavaliers

North Carolina State Wolfpack
Last year, NCSU went 5 – 7 and lost out on a bowl invitation with its last game loss to Maryland at home (37 – 0). This year, the Wolfpack should be flirting with the same scenario when Miami (FL) comes to town for its last game on November 29, 2008. The team is hoping that the improvement in the second half of 2007 will carry over for the ’08 season. NC State has 10 returning starters total (second fewest in the ACC) from last year and still has questions at the quarterback position. As a team, the Wolfpack was minus 16 in turnovers, 11th in the ACC rushing and had 14 touchdown passes compared to 23 interceptions. All of these offensive statistics must be reversed or else it will be a long season for the Pack nation again. Tom O’Brien is heading into his second season and is more confident about this season. One reason could be the rise of running back Jamelle Eugene (JR) after injuries to the starting running back Andre Brown (SR) and fullback Tony Baker (JR). With another season of rebuilding, the team does not have an easy schedule. They play non-conference games against the South Carolina Gamecocks and South Florida Bulls (both Top 20 Preseason). Plus, they play the tougher Atlantic Division and the wins will not come easy for this team. The team will show improvement but it may not be represented in wins and losses in 2008. Prediction: Overall (6 – 6); ACC (4 – 4)
North Carolina Tar Heels
UNC has some high hopes for 2008 and a lot hinges on the September 20 visit by Virginia Tech. This game, in some experts’ minds, could be destined to represent the Coastal Division in Tampa Bay on December 6, 2008. With eighteen returning starters and some favorable home games (Virginia Tech, Notre Dame, Connecticut and Georgia Tech), the Tar Heels could make a run this season. The two receivers, Hakeem Nicks (JR) and Brandon Tate (SR), will be looking to quarterback TJ Yates (SO) to get them the ball in wide open spaces, and running back Greg Little (SO) should have a break out year. On defense, the linebackers must become solid quickly or it will not matter how much UNC scores on offense. The biggest loss of the year could be Conner Barth and his ability to make big kicks. Even with all of the positives, Carolina must learn to win close games this season or the high hopes could rapidly be shattered. They still lack overall depth and injuries in key positions will not be beneficial. Also, throw in the two tough non-conference games with Rutgers and Notre Dame and this season is actually a coin toss. Prediction: Overall (7 – 5); ACC (5 – 3)
Duke Blue Devils
Can you remember the last time that there has been so much excitement in Durham about Duke Football? Me either. We will see if any of the benefits Coach David Cutcliffe brings to the table will pay off this year. Everyone should know by now that he coached the last two Super Bowl MVP’s and brothers Peyton Manning (Indianapolis Colts) and Eli Manning (New York Giants) during their college careers. Plus, look to see some visits to the Duke campus by the Manning brothers to talk to quarterback

Thaddeus Lewis (JR). Now, let’s talk facts about the Duke Football program and where it is today. Duke is 1 – 31 in the ACC since expansion. The last winning season and bowl appearance was in 1994. The team rushed for only 768 yards on 376 carries (average of 2.0 per carry) in 2007. They had only one game over 100 yards as a team vs. UNC and ranked 117th out of 119 teams. Despite the lack of rushing, Lewis had a decent year throwing the football (199 – 360, 2,430 yards, 21 TD’s, 10 Int). This year, with the conditioning level being Coach Cutcliffe’s top priority, the Blue Devils should be able to compete through the entire
www.carolina12.com
season up to the final whistle in January. Last year, conditioning cost them several games in the 4th quarter. This will be an interesting team to watch locally to see how they progress under the new system and expectations (yes, I said expectations). Prediction: Overall (4 – 8); ACC (1 – 7)

Questions for the upcoming season Will Clemson finally meet its potential? Can the Conference Champion win in the BCS bowl game? Will Wake Forest actually stay a consistent winner? Will NC State find a quarterback before it is too late? Can Duke end the streak of 25 consecutive losses in the ACC? Does UNC have a kicker for close games that can make a game winner?

CAROLINA12’S TEST DRIVE
Luxury At Its Finest 2009 Mercedes S550
>>
Statistics: Vehicle Type: 4 Door Sedan, All Wheel Drive, 5 passenger Starting Price: MSRP $90,825 Engine Type: 5.5Liter V8 8 cylinder Displacement: Power: 382 HP @ 6,000 RPM Torque: 391 lb-ft @ 2,800 - 4,800 rpm Suspension: Independent Front/ Rear Transmission: 7 speed automatic Steering-wheel-mounted shift buttons allow for Touch Shift gear selection; Electronically controlled shifting; Driver-adaptive programming adjusts shift points to the driver’s current driving style.
The 2009 Mercedes - Benz S Class S550 4Matic is one of the most beautiful sedans you will ever have the privilege to drive. With a MSRP of $90,825, the car is for a select group of individuals. The owners of this German built automobile will have the pleasure of driving it and having all eyes turn to them instantly. It will stand out on the street as only a Benz can. When it goes by, make sure you notice the stylish design that the manufacturer has brought to life for 2009. This vehicle boasts a 5.5 Liter DOHC 32 – valve V8 8 cylinder engine and can go 0 – 60 in 5.4 seconds. With its all wheel drive, any driver can feel comfortable when difficult situations arise that require a quick reaction. This is an aspect that I tested out taking a 90 degree turn at 45 miles per hour (mph) with no fish tailing or sliding. Once I found my cruising speed at 75 mph on the highway, I realized that it took all the restraint I had not
By Paul Samuels
to push the accelerator to the floor to experience 100 mph in this automobile. This was one time in my life I wished I were in Europe on the Autobahn taking this car to the maximum speed it can handle. When I finally kicked restraint out of the window, the speed of 100 felt magnificent! I do not recommend anyyone doing this on a test drive though because my co pilot (the salesman) was highly upset with me. Plus, it is also dangerous for a nonprofessional driver to do that speed at any time. The overall test drive of the Mercedes - Benz sedan was exhilarating. I felt like I had the hottest ride on the road for every second I was in it. I have never had the experience or pleasure of actually being behind the wheel of such a luxurious automobile in my life. Well, until I drive the Mercedes - Benz S600 that is.

Southern grace. Look polished on a weekend in loafers and easy slacks.
Impressing your clients. A slim vest subdues and frames a bright dress shirt.
How Much Cuff to Show The traditional rule is to show one-half inch of cuff under your jacket sleeve. If you have the time and money, the appropriate thing to do is have a tailor adjust the sleeves of your jacket to show the shirt sleeve. If you don’t have this luxury and you’re lucky enough to have arms just long enough that a long jacket sleeve looks just a little too long right off the rack, you’ll be able to wear a regular jacket size and show just enough cuff. Wearing a longer shirt sleeve to achieve this length is not advised as you will end up looking like Jack Sparrow in a business suit.

aron Patrick, wardrobe designer behind Aaron Patrick Custom Clothier, lent his talent and panache to J + B Clothing in a showcase of his spring and summer collection at Strut 08 at prestigious North Hills on May 3, 2008. Noted as a talented and demanded designer, people talk about Aaron with venerable reverence. “You can tell that men feel good about themselves in his suits,” said Sara Beard, stylist at Samuel Cole Salon, backstage at the show. “He embodies the feel of a strong American male and isn’t afraid to throw in some pink!” When asked about his designs chosen for Strut’s runway, he is quick to explain his vision. “These suits are classic, with flair.” Timeless cuts and colors are usually avoided on runways, but Aaron continues to make an immediate connection with buyers by utilizing them. “A Raleigh gentleman is looking for a traditional look and great fit,” he says, “[but is also] looking for versatility in his suits and sport coats.” This versatility can be found in Aaron’s use of modern color combinations, the thin lines created by close cuts and of thinner wools more appropriate for warm weather. Over the next ten years, he predicts that suiting will greatly remain the same in form and function but with adjustments mimicking facets

odd Whitney has wanted to be a chef almost his entire life. He worked at his first restaurant at the age of 15 and was immediately hooked. His first European chef experience came in San Diego, CA after culinary school, where he worked for his mentor at a French restaurant. Now for almost the past 2 years he has been the chef at the locally renowned J. Betski’s in downtown Raleigh, a central Eurpopean bistro.
Executive Chef: Todd Whitney
Who writes your menu? I do. It’s comprised of local seasonal ingredients. I try to do updated classics, stuff that’s traditional, but I try to lighten it up a little bit.
Is there a guilty secret — something canned, something hokey — in your arsenal of ingredients? I’m a big fan of duck fat, which I use to cook cabbage, sauerkraut, etc. I’ll try to sneak it into a lot of stuff. If you had to pick your favorite international cuisine, what would it be? I really love Spanish food, but I also like Japanese food. What kind of kitchen mangement style would you say you have? I’m pretty laid back during prep hours. I’m not opposed to music being played, but once 5:30 hits, it’s all business. What do you cook when you’re at home? I do cook sometimes, but I like to keep it very simple. I love to grill chicken with just salt and pepper, grill some vegetables.
What made you decide you would become a professional chef? I loved to cook and I got hooked after I worked in my first restaurant when I was 15 years old.
Do you find yourself being critical when you visit other restaurants? I’m critical, but my grading scale is pretty simple. I look to see that the simple things are done correctly, like is the plate warm, etc., but for the most part I just try to enjoy myself.
What kind of crowd do you typically get? We have a great word of mouth crowd mixed with newcomers and some regulars.
What Raleigh restaurant(s), other than J. Betski’s, do you like to visit when you have the chance? I like to eat at Fin’s, Bella Monica’s, and the Globe.
Best piece of advice you would give a home enthusiast? I would tell home enthusiasts to use lemon juice because it makes things taste a little brighter and the acidity helps balance stuff out. I’d also tell them to use salt and pepper.
What would you choose as your final meal? My girlfriend makes a pretty good meatloaf.
Which cooking tools or gadgets are your favorites? I have a smoker and a gelato machine that I love to use all the time. Which are the most overrated — and underrated — seasonings? Salt and pepper.
What’s a food you cannot bring yourself to eat? Lima Beans! Location: 10 West Franklin St. Suite 120 Raleigh, NC 27604 (919) 839-7999 www.jbetskis.com
