Star NOVEMBER WORDS FROM THE DIRECTOR KAYE MONK-MORGAN FALL IS HERE, the first nine weeks of school has come and gone and it is time to spend some time in reflection. November is one of my favorite months, in part because of the weather, but also because of Thanksgiving, the great food and quality time with my family. I also try to make a habit in the month of November to be intentional about expressing gratitude. Gratitude, thankfulness, gratefulness, or appreciation is a feeling or attitude in acknowledgment of a benefit that one has received or will receive.
Each day in the month of November, I challenge you to focus on one person, place or thing (noun) that you are grateful for and write it down. Here are some tips from Jason Marsh, the editor in chief of Greater Good on keeping a gratitude journal that I think are helpful. Don’t just go through the motions. Research by psychologist Sonja Lyubomirsky and others suggests that journaling is more effective if you first make the conscious decision to become happier and more grateful. “Motivation to become happier plays a role in the efficacy of journaling,” says Emmons.
Go for depth over breadth. Elaborating in detail about a particular thing for which you’re grateful carries more benefits than a superficial list of many things. Get personal. Focusing on people to whom you are grateful has more of an impact than focusing on things for which you are grateful. Try subtraction, not just addition. One effective way of stimulating gratitude is to reflect on what your life would be like without certain blessings, rather than just tallying up all those good things. Savor surprises. Try to record events that were unexpected or surprising, as these tend to elicit stronger levels of gratitude.
The UBMS staff and I will be up to our eyeballs in evaluations, report writing and documentation of all the good that UBMS does year-long. It will be helpful for us to remember you…those that we are most grateful while we take on this task. Congratulations to all of you wrapping up your marching band, volleyball, wrestling and other seasons. I am proud of the many accomplishments of the UBMS family out there!

WICHITA STAR TRIO UPWARD BOUND MATH SCIENCE CENTER CURRICULUM COORDINATOR’S CORNER Ms. Karen Rogers IN EVERYTHING GIVE THANKS. . . Tis’ the season of Thanksgiving, and all of us have something to be thankful for… It’s the time of year that we are reminded to count our many blessings! I am truly thankful for the opportunity to work with and to serve all of our UBMS students this year. I feel especially close to many of you and hope to get to know others even better. I will continue to seek out opportunities to provide the necessary academic support you will need in order for you to achieve higher GPAs, increased ACT scores, and better performance on tests. I am so thankful to those of you who took the time to write out your Academic, Personal, and Pre-College Preparatory Goals for this year. Most of you are well on your way to achieving these goals, and that’s a great start. Academically, I hope you now realize the importance of maintaining a high GPA through high school graduation (this will open many doors for your future). For most of you, I find your Personal Goals to be very interesting, diverse, and unique – and accomplishing these goals will offer you a sense of accomplishment, fulfillment and pride in your efforts. Planning for College in advance is an excellent way to be prepared for that transitional period of your life, and most of you indicated that you would like to achieve an ACT score of 21 or higher. One of the best ways to accomplish this goal would be to take full advantage of ComFit on a regular basis. Those of you who have used this resource know from experience that it is very helpful. I am also thankful for those of you who are taking the time to participate in UBMS activities. You will find that the rewards of your participation are endless. I trust that all of you are doing well in your studies, and I encourage you (if you have not done so by now) to submit your ParentVue information as soon as possible. Your academic success is of utmost importance to me. Thank you… for allowing me to help you achieve your goals! During this season of Thanksgiving, I would encourage each of you, in everything you do, to find something to be thankful for… even if it’s just for life itself. “Sometimes we focus so much on what we don’t have that we fail to see, appreciate, and even use what we do have!” – Jeff Dixon

SCHOLARSHIP CONNECTION
Scholarships in November
means scholarship search! Every senior should be applying for at least one scholarship a week. If you require help with your applications, please see a UBMS staff member.
FRESHMAN MERIT SCHOLARSHIP As part of the new Freshman Merit Scholarship Program, fully admitted seniors with a six-semester transcript and ACT/SAT score on file are automatically considered for a four-year, renewable scholarship awards, ranging from $1,000 to $3,000 per year for Kansas residents. Students are encouraged to get admitted early for maximum consideration. Students are evaluated based on three criteria: Unweighted GPA, ACT/SAT score and class rank. Students who have GPA or test score improvements after the initial award date will have an opportunity for reconsideration in December and February. Students will be offered the largest scholarship for which they qualify. Awards are renewable for up to an additional three academic years (excluding summers) or to the point where the student receives their first bachelor's degree, whichever comes first. Scholarships may be applied to tuition and student fees, but not deposits (i.e. housing deposit). To renew, students must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25 at the conclusion of each semester of the academic year and enroll in, and successfully complete, at least 12 credit hours each semester (fall and spring).
in Career Choices and the Workbook & Portfolio, we started a remarkable journey to examine student’s passions, aptitudes, and attitudes. Putting students in a position to better understand their own beliefs, dreams, and motivations, and it equipped them to make important choices that result in happiness and life satisfaction. Chapter 2 is often a student favorite, but also an important foundational chapter. As Ralph Waldo Emerson once observed, “Self-trust is the first secret of success,” but building that self-trust takes time, energy, and a level of self-awareness. To make life decisions that are personally fulfilling, students must have a basic understanding of their own personality traits, values, skills, and passions. According to Erik Erikson, “The key task of adolescence is the establishment and consolidation of identity.” It is during this time that young people discover what they stand for, and perhaps more important to character formation, what they won’t stand for. By the end of Chapter 2, students learn that self-knowledge is the first step to taking the guesswork out of making choices, and this is a very empowering discovery.
