Preparing Students for Purpose Since 1992

Star September 2013
WORDS FROM THE DIRECTOR KAYE MONK-MORGAN KISS SUMMER GOODBYE! By now, you are couple of weeks into your classes; you have reviewed all that you learned last year and are getting ready to begin the process of learning new material. Now is the time that the summer should start to pay off. Now is the time when you can use the things newly learned to move forward. Now is your time! While you all are turning the corner on matters, so is your TRIO UBMS staff. Vacations are complete and we are preparing for academic year service provision. It is my hope that each of you will undertake a process of planning and goal setting, much like the one taking place in the TRIO UBMS office. Each of you would be wise to spend some time determining your personal and academic goals. Living an intentional life (CD-DIP) requires that we regularly determine our end goal and develop benchmarks to that success. What do you want to accomplish this school year? Whether your goal is to improve your grade point average, increase your study time, join a school club or organization, or provide 50 hours of community service, your goal is only a goal until you develop an action plan. Your 2013-2014 Action Plan should include 2 to 3 SMART goals followed by very specific action steps. SMART goals are: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time bound. Creating goals that are SMART increases the likelihood that those goals will

Take a few minutes and draft your goals and submit them to the UBMS office using the same format. Perhaps you would like to complete the COMFIT tutorial, or earn a B or better in Algebra I, or have 80% attendance at UBMS activities. Whatever you want to accomplish, set your goal and send it in. I will be in touch about your progress and I encourage you to do the same with me!

A New Beginning Summer is officially over and by now you’ve started a brand new school year with new goals, new attitudes and a new determination to succeed. I hope each of you had an enjoyable summer after the end of the UBMS summer program. It was my pleasure to work with each of you to guide you through the rigorous academic challenges this summer presented. In the end, I hope it proved to be beneficial in some way for you. Here are some questions to ask yourselves after your summer experience . . . What did you learn? What were your takeaways? What will you use during your new school year or in life? What difference did it make for you? Was it a waste of your time? I contend that it will only be a waste of your time if you do not use, or put into practice, what you’ve learned. September is already here, and with the start of a new school year, it brings about “a new beginning” – another opportunity to study harder, try new things, make better choices, complete assignments on time, ask more questions in class, set a good example for those around you, think about your future and make good grades. For some, you are just starting your high school experience (new beginning). For others, you can’t wait until high school is over so that you can start your college experience (new beginning). And for those somewhere in between, each year of your high school experience can be a new beginning for you, filled with success and great accomplishments. The choice is up to you if you are willing to work a little bit harder than the average student. Special thanks to all of you for making my first summer with UBMS such a memorable and enjoyable one. As I’ve come to know each of you a little better now, I already know that success is within your reach – you just have to pursue it. Let’s have a great academic year… This is your “new beginning!”

“The road to success is not straight. There is a curve called Failure, a loop called Confusion, speed bumps called Friends, red lights called Enemies, caution lights called Family. You will have flat tires called Tests, but if you have a spare called Determination, an engine called Perseverance, a driver called Will Power, you will make it to a place called Success.” ~ Ms. Karen Rogers

SAT DATES & WAIVERS The UBMS office has recently secured SAT waivers for your use. Mrs. Morgan wants all seniors to register for and take the November test. The SAT is offered seven times each year in the U.S. (October, November, December, January, March (U.S. only; SAT only), May and June.) The ACT and SAT tests evaluate different things. Sometimes students, who don’t score well on one, score better on the other. Let’s see what happens.
