WORDS FROM OUR DIRECTOR – Mrs. Kaye Monk-Morgan This edition of the Wichita Star is about advocacy. My role as a TRIO UBMS Director has many components and I am responsible for many things. I have to make sure you are taught the things needed for college admission, I need to make sure you have access to the right high school curriculum and I need to manage our limited resources (human and financial) such that they work to move you closer to the goal of college graduation. All of these activities require a bit of advocacy…or work on your behalf. My advocacy is about you!

Advocacy is about collaboration, communication and sheer will to get something done that is of grave importance. Through this article I want to challenge you to become an advocate of those things that work for you, your family, and your interests. I am sounding a clarion call that in 2014, youth can no longer simply rely on adults to speak to power about those things that impact you…you have to begin to do this for yourself! February 20, 2014 is National TRIO Day. The Wichita State University TRIO family will th celebrate TRIO Day on February 13 by hosting a Town Hall Meeting with the Acting Deputy Secretary of Higher Education Programs, Dr. Linda Byrd-Johnson, the woman in charge of Federal TRIO and GEAR UP programs across

this nation, and a dinner in her honor. This is a IN THIS ISSUE perfect time for you to speak to power about a cause (college access), idea (economic Page 2 empowerment), and policy (TRIO) that you care  SOCIAL NETWORKS about. Dr. Byrd-Johnson is coming to town to hear from you! She wants to know what you CURRICULUM COORDINATOR think, how you feel, and what is important to CORNER you. This is your time to share. While advocacy at its finest is speaking to highranking political appointees that run programs that impact you, advocacy is also working in your school to improve relations with teachers. Advocacy is calling your congressman to talk about the school lunch program, or signing a petition. Advocacy is voting or helping educate your parents on issue important to your family. Advocacy is educating oneself about issues and the politics that surround them so you may be a resource for others. This month, I implore you to find a way to advocate for something you care about…some case, idea or policy for which you are willing to be an active support for or take a stand. I implore you to attend National TRIO Day at WSU and take the opportunity to share with those that care, what TRIO means to you! Yours in Service! Mama Morgan

CURRICULUM COORDINATORS CORNER by Karen Rogers

ADVOCATING FOR EDUCATION Every time a parent shows up at a teacher conference… Every time you get involved in your school’s Student Council… Every time a community member questions a School Board Member regarding a decision made about education in our schools... Every time you follow education issues, contact a state legislator, US Senator, or congressional representative to effect change in education… Every time I attend a meeting or workshop that talks about the “Kansas College and Career Ready Standards” (Common Core Standards)… we are being Advocates for education. It takes the efforts and hard work of many people to ensure that every student receives the appropriate education that is necessary to optimize his/her opportunity to achieve to the highest level of his/her potential in life. Using the Common Core Standards as a nation-wide initiative supports the idea that students from every state across the country will be taught and tested on the same academic standards. For example, if a student relocates to a different state, it will eliminate the problem of having that student attend a new school and not being ready to integrate in the classroom learning process.

Check us out on Facebook! And visit the UBMS website frequently for news! Are you following us on Twitter and tweeting the good news that #TRIOworks?

CURRICULUM COORDINATORS CORNER (continued) Some would argue that the new standards are more difficult for students, but in reality, the “rigorous” standards were designed to define the knowledge and skills that leaders believe students need in order to be successful in college and careers. I will encourage each of you to take advantage of every learning opportunity that comes your way, whether in school or in life. Pay close attention to the lessons being taught. Consider what you can learn now and possibly use later on in life. Life may be difficult now, but it won’t be difficult always. “There is no end to education. It is not that you read a book, pass an examination, and finish with education. The whole of life, from the moment you are born to the moment you die, is a process of learning.” ~ Jiddu Krishnamurti
