SUMMER 2014 SUMMER CALENDAR WORDS FROM OUR DIRECTOR – Mrs. Kaye Monk-Morgan The academic year is just about over and it’s almost UBMS time! The UBMS staff is hard at work preparing for your arrival. As our seniors wrap up their last semester of high school, our newest UBMS students are beginning the fouryear journey in high school. This is a time of transition for so many! Let us continue to “Prepare for our Purpose.” This summer’s theme will be “The Story of My Life…” I am excited about this theme as it allows us to think about writing the chapters of our life. Did you know that the decisions you make are the outline for your life story? What do the first chapters of your story say about you? Is your story going to be an epic, tragedy, comedy or creative non-fiction? You should have received via mail, a copy of “A Choice of Weapons” a powerful biography written by Gordon Parks, famed Kansas writer, photographer and director. Please work to have this magnificent work read prior th to June 6 . This book will be integrated into our summer program and you want

to be up to speed with the references made to the content.

UBMS Alumni

The cycle of UBMS is one that is based on renewal. Each spring we prepare to

bring on a new group of freshmen with great promise and excitement. We also prepare to send our current seniors to the next chapter. The process of sending alumni into the greater academic community is one that we approach with mixed feelings. We are excited that our students are moving on to college, but sad that they are leaving the Center… not the UBMS family because “Once a Morgan, always a Morgan.” Congratulations to all the seniors as they move towards the next chapter! Your UBMS family is proud of you and wishes you well! Can’t wait to see you! Mama Morgan

CURRICULUM COORDINATOR’S CORNER by Karen Rogers THE END IS JUST THE BEGINNING As the season changes, it marks the end of one period and the beginning of another. While some of you are focusing on graduation as the end of your high school journey, others are transitioning through grade levels, or perhaps just starting the journey anew. In less than a month, that change will take place. When spring ends, summer begins. Take a moment to reflect on what you’ve completed and accomplished over the past semester (and year), and begin planning for what you hope to accomplish this summer (and the next school year). As the semester ends, your summer planning should begin. The UBMS staff is preparing to welcome our students (current and new) to another wonderful and exciting summer enrichment program where you will experience a rigorous academic curriculum, skillbuilding workshops, thought-provoking discussions, and challenging presentations. Be prepared to work hard, have fun, meet new “friends”, and increase your learning capacity. So while you are ending one chapter in your life, we hope by now, that you’ve already started a new chapter in your summer reading experience… “A Choice of Weapons” by Gordon Parks
