Student Newsletter September 2014
WORDS FROM THE DIRECTOR KAYE MONK-MORGAN SUMMER 2014 was a SUCCESS! We came together as a family and I enjoyed the opportunity to spend time with each of you. As we turn the corner for fall, it’s time to get moving on future successes. By now, you are couple of weeks into your classes; reviewing all that you learned last year and will soon begin the process of learning new material. Now is the time that the summer should start to pay off. Now is the time when you can use the things newly learned to move forward. Now is your time! At the end of the summer banquet, each of you was given a book called, Acing the Undergrad, Your Personal Mentor, by Emeka and Carrie Anazia. Each month the UBMS program will highlight a chapter of that text, both in POPS and in the monthly newsletter. This month’s topic is Goal Setting. For those of you newer to UBMS, each fall the students and staff set academic, personal and career goals. We do so in an effort to realistically consider our paths forward. This year is no different.
Attainable, Relevant and Time bound. Creating goals that are SMART increases the likelihood that those goals will be met. I am working on setting goals for this year. I look forward to sharing them with you at our first workshop together! Example Goal:
Specific Measurable – how will we know if the goal is met?
Attainable – Can this be done?
Relevant – Does this goal matter?
Time bound – Is there a deadline?
Please consider the following: What do you want to accomplish this school year? Whether your goal is to improve your grade point average, increase your study time, join a school club or organization, or provide 50 hours of community service, your goal is only a goal until you develop an action plan. Your 2014-2015 action plan should include 2-3 SMART goals followed by very specific action steps. SMART goals are: Specific, Measurable, EMAIL ubms@wichita.edu GOOGLE+ Wichita State UBMS Program
I am going to earn an A in Chemistry. The goal is for one particular thing. I will know if the goal is met at the end of the year by checking the grade. I can also track it online. This can be done because I am ready to study and I took chemistry this summer. I need an “A” for my GPA for college scholarships and I need chemistry to meet the KS Honors Scholars Curriculum. The deadline is May 22, 2015.
Now it’s your turn! Take a few minutes and draft your goals and submit them to the UBMS office using the same format. Perhaps you would like to earn a 28 on the ACT or earn a B or better in Algebra I, or have 80% attendance at UBMS activities. Whatever you want to accomplish, set your goal and send it in. I will be in touch about your progress and I encourage you to do the same with me! Have a GREAT fall semester!

Going for the “GOAL” We are approaching the end of summer and anticipating the beginning of the fall semester. We experienced a wonderful and productive 2014 summer program. Now we are excited to begin plans for another academic year. With that in mind, this will be the perfect time to consider setting, pursuing and achieving your Personal, Academic and Professional goals As you contemplate on the things that are important to you and your future, consider breaking them down into short and long term goals. I encourage you to set goals that will “stretch” you or force you to “grow” beyond your limits (personally, academically and professionally). Here are some additional tips to get you started in your goal setting plans.

ACT Dates and Waivers
"All our dreams can come true --if we have the courage to pursue them." Walt Disney
The deadline for registration to compete for the WSU Distinguished Scholarship Invitational is October 15, 2014. Many of you meet the criteria for invitation (3.5 GPA and 24 ACT). If you are close to that combination apply! This is a $52,000 opportunity! Even if WSU isn’t your first choice, you owe it to yourself to compete and then turn down the $$$$ if you want. Several of you have a great chance of winning top dollars in this competition! Let’s win some!
All UBMS Seniors should work with Ms. Rogers to sign up for the December ACT test date. The registration deadline for the December test th date is November 7 , but we want to have you registered by September 15th. Ms. Rogers will provide you with a waiver. Please remember that you may only use two waivers, EVER. If you took the ACT this summer you may have used one waiver. Please check with your home TRIO program and the UBMS office regarding this matter. We strongly suggest you wait for the December test date rather than an earlier one, even if this means your acceptance to the college of your choice is delayed. Scores only go up with effort. UBMS has a plan for students interested in improving scores. We will go over that plan with you at your first Senior Meeting.
