CLASS of 2016
ACT Dates and Waivers All sophomores and juniors should be working on their ACT prep. We are beginning to work in the English section and should work to complete the largest portion of this section during March. Get to it! Mr. Lockard is working to make sure that every student has the opportunity to complete the pre-test so we can get data on areas to improve so that our work will be efficient and focused on the important pieces. Please look for upcoming communication with Mr. Lockard about registering for the June test date. If you have reset your passwords or set up you own accounts, he will need access to those in order to complete the registration and pay for your test.
Senior meetings are in progress. If you have not scheduled yours, please do so immediately. These meetings will focus on steps to take after admission and scholarships. It’s time to begin narrowing our choices! Make sure your Google folder is up to date!
Your leadership resume should be updated. Your college comparison worksheet should be modified. – Please indicate which college/universities to which you have gained admission. You should have copies of your acceptance letters in your file. You should have copied the Scholarship Tracker and placed a copy in your folder and more importantly, your Scholarship Tracker should be updated. Your STUDENT AID REPORT from your FAFSA should be there too.
RISING SENIORS will take the ACT Plus Writing, while all others will take the standard assessment.

TRIO Upward Bound Math Science
Assistant Director’s Corner by Mr. Lockard
Sharpening the saw is again the topic for this month. Last month we talked about how sharpening the saw meant finding balance in your physical, social, mental, and spiritual life. This also required us to do some self-reflection of our habits to ensure that we are constantly getting better at them and keeping honest towards our own progress. In continuing on with this topic, I want to talk about some other ideas with sharpening this saw. To start off, our saws are made of iron and I know from personal experience that iron sharpens iron. One sharp saw is great, but when rubbing two iron blades (saws) together, the edges become sharper. The blades both had a mutual benefit of becoming more efficient in their task. This is the same phenomena for us. We, as individuals are great, but when we sharpen one another (from fellowship, meetings, or interactions) we both become sharper and more efficient in doing our tasks. Upward Bound Math and Science is a place where all of us can get together with other sharp people who have similar interests to us. We know that all of you are great students and great individuals, but being able to be around the other students is incredibly beneficial for us all. We, as humans, are social beings. Why not partake in activities where we can come together with our fellow students for fellowship and the exploration of knowledge. We all, in UBMS, have many commonalities. We should all

share our issues and our triumphs that we face daily to help advise others and come together to celebrate each other. Let us all continue to be sharp, effective, and useful. If you are a student who feels like your knife might be blunt and dull compared to others, then involvement in UBMS is the place to continue to get sharpened. Are you attending all of our events? Are you trying to make connections with other students? Are you trying to make connections with staff? At the end of the day we hope that you can all shine brightly, because all the dullness was rubbed off of the surface and enter into your next stages of life ready for your daily tasks. -Devon Lockard, Assistant Director
