UBMS was there for POPSSOCIAL CULTURALFAMILY NIGHTCAMPUS VISITSCOMMUNITY SERVICE Acing the Undergrad: Your Personal Mentor Words by Kaye Monk-Morgan The fall semester is almost over and our Hutchinson and Maize High students have begun the second session of the year. I hope you each have taken the opportunity to ready the fall text, Acing the Undergrad: Your Personal Mentor. The UBMS staff and I have all read the book and have used it to shape our POPS and ACT sessions with you as well as our newsletter articles. It has been a nice reminder to all that success doesn’t happen accidently. Rather one has to plan to succeed and work hard to help others push you toward that success. We have discussed goal setting, time management and classroom etiquette. This month’s focus is on positive teacher relationships. Classroom etiquette and teacher relationships are very similar and when done well. They result in having teachers who are more than happy to write a strong letter of recommendation for a well-respected student. How does one build a relationship with educational administrators that works best for you… well the authors give you the real deal. Managing relationships is a skill that each person needs to create while in high school, college and in the career world. Your teachers really can make or break your educational experience and create either a joy for learning or lessen your enthusiasm for a subject. Training, the source for professional development at http://www.trainingmag.com gives “8 tips for Developing Positive Relationships” that I think are applicable. They aren’t hard and they are things that you learned in kindergarten… but you will soon learn that most of what you really need to know in life, you learned there anyway. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.

Accept and celebrate differences. Your professors are people with different thoughts, preferences and challenges. Accept them as people first, and it will be easier to respect them as your teacher. Listen… remember, they are the content specialist and you are there for the content. Teachers like students who demonstrate an interest in the subject matter and listen to their lectures. Be punctual… show up on time, ready to work and stay seated until you are dismissed. Teachers, like many others, want students to give them their time. Suspend your desire to get out of the room, and share a little with your instructor. Doing so will pay off. Seek to really communicate your thoughts well. I am not suggesting that you kiss up rather be prepared to demonstrate that you have thought about the subject prior to class and have considered the implications. Be ready to share your thoughts. Give and take feedback… Teachers want to be good at what they do. Rarely is anyone teaching for the money, rather they are present for you each day. Giving consistent feedback to help your teacher grow will be appreciated. Trust… let the teacher be the teacher… while you learn to be the student. Manage your technology. Don’t be distracted nor should you be a distraction. Put your mobile devices away and show your instructor that you are an engaged learner. Be empathetic. The saying that “People will forget what you said, but people will never forget how you made them feel. Make sure that your interactions with your teacher are affirming for him/her. Be the one student in the room that doesn’t need constant reminders. Make his or her job easier in any way, and you are in the club.

You are the product of teaching… you are a reflection of their proficiency at this chosen job. Let them be excited about what you are going to do with your life and allow them to be a part of the experience. They love helping! Yours in service, ~ Mama Morgan
