WORDS FROM THE DIRECTOR KAYE MONK-MORGAN “Begin with the End in Mind!” The school year has begun. We have reviewed the first Habit… Be Proactive! Being proactive really means understanding that you have the power to do great things. A proactive person goes after what they want instead of reacting and complaining that they don’t have what they want. I am hopeful that most of you have already worked on developing your SMART goals for the academic year. We are moving forward in our development of Habits that will increase our effectiveness. Short term goals lead to your long term goals. Most of you have heard me say, at least once, “make a plan, and work the plan.” Your plans will determine where you end. Have you ever started out on a road trip without a map or at least a global positioning system (GPS). GPS technology can be purchased in individual units, are included in high-end cars, and even on cellular devices. The availability of this tool is a clear indication that people want direction. They want guidance getting from point A to point B, in the most efficient route without the fear of getting lost. This technology is all about the user picking a destination and getting help getting there. The user makes a plan and begins working the plan, with the help of the GPS. You have set a destination… college. You have made a plan to attend the college of your choice. TRIO UBMS is your GPS. EMAIL ubms@wichita.edu GOOGLE+ Wichita State UBMS Program
Our job is to help you navigate, turn by turn, to that destination without getting lost. This means participation is important, and in some cases critical to you getting to your ultimate destination, a career that feeds your purpose and your family.

TRIO Upward Bound Math Science
Assistant Director’s Corner by Lance Onstott
“Begin with the End in Mind” Most of you have debated the following question for quite some time: What do you want to be when you grow up? The questions has almost become cliché and worn out, but let us really think about how to answer it before you skip right over it. Are you – right now – who you want to be, what you dreamed you’d be, doing what you always wanted to do? Better yet, are you on the right path in order to achieve your personal, educational and professional dreams? This habit challenges you to develop a vision of who you want to be and where you want to go. Once you have this vision, you can then utilize your proactive muscles (Habit #1) in order to make it happen. One of the best ways to incorporate this habit into your life is to develop a personal mission statement. What is a “mission statement” you may be asking. A mission statement is a summary of the aims and values of a company, organization or individual. For example, the mission statement for the Upward Bound Math Science program is to (as I am sure you already know): Educate students with the propensity for study in STEM areas for postsecondary Stimulate and Sustain interest in STEM careers Motivate low-income and potential first-generation college students to realistically consider the attainment of a post-secondary degree in STEM Our mission statement above guides us in the development and implementation of the UBMS program. The statements above constitute our vision of who we are, who we want to remain and even where we want to go. All of our activities, programs, workshops, etc. should be tasked to attain and/or enhance one or more of the above statements.

A personal mission statement takes the same form. I challenge each of you to develop your own personal mission statement and let it guide you. If you can begin with your end in mind and strengthen and utilize your proactive muscles, you are well on your way to becoming an effective person.
Examples of personal mission statements:
It is my mission to graduate with a BA, while attending the best educational institution possible It is my mission to exercise the virtues of honesty and honor in all the work I do It is my mission to never give up, and to achieve all of my goals through persistence and dedication
You can also participate using your cell phone, if you have one, either using the app or the website. Join the hangout by clicking on the link, then join the conversation by clicking it again You should be in at that point.

COLLEGE APPLICATION st
On Thursday, October 1 in Topeka, KS, Governor Sam Brownback signed a proclamation declaring October "Apply Kansas College Application Month" and encouraged all high school seniors to take advantage of the assistance provided. "Apply Kansas: College Application Month" is an initiative being coordinated by a statewide steering committee, which includes representatives from the Kansas Board of Regents, public postsecondary institutions, independent colleges and high school guidance counselors. After this pilot year with ten high schools, the steering committee will work to grow the program statewide to continue creating a seamless transition between students leaving high school, entering college, and then moving into the workforce. October events are currently scheduled at the following high schools: • Wyandotte High School (USD 500) • JC Harmon High School (USD 500) • FL Schlagle High School (USD 500) • Washington High School (USD 500) • North High School (USD 259) • East High School (USD 259) • Heights High School (USD 259) • Northwest High School (USD 259) For communities that do not have an event scheduled, helpful advice for high

with mail-order or Internet pharmacies or wholesalers are expanding. Free also highly recommends that pharmacists complete a residency after graduation. “Best Health Care Jobs.” U.S. News & World Report. Web. 28 September 2015
HAPPY BIRTHDAY to YOU th
Outlook The unique mix of medicinal knowledge and interpersonal skills required to run a pharmacy counter remain in high demand. Over the next decade, more Americans are expected to seek health services either because they're getting older or because the Affordable Care Act has made prescriptions, well, more affordable. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 14.5 percent employment growth for pharmacists by 2022, with the field adding 41,400 new jobs. Solid employment growth and a high median salary help make pharmacist a top contender on this year’s list of Best Jobs. Training Would-be pharmacists should prepare for a lot of school. A bachelor's degree or at least two years of study at a college or university, where you take pre-requisites like organic chemistry and biology, are required before aspiring pharmacists can begin a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program. The PharmD degree is a fouryear program, which has replaced the former bachelor's degree in Pharmacy. Most of the more than 100 PharmD programs require applicants to take the Pharmacy College Admissions Test. And after completing the program, there are several examinations to pass, as well as an optional one-, two- or three-year residency program. Pharmacists will also need to obtain a state-specific license to practice pharmacy. Advice "Don't look at the job you want today," Free says. "Look at the position you'd be interested in 10 or 20 years and see what the job requirements are." For instance, if you want to go into management, you might need some business classes – or a dual PharmD and business degree. And although about 40 percent of pharmacists work in pharmacies or drug stories, jobs
