Words from our Director: Mrs. Kaye Monk-Morgan The end of the school year is here and we are also at the end of our academic year reading, Acing the Undergrad: Your Personal Mentor. The May reading focuses on Money Management and Scholarships. If you are a UBMS senior, you are learning first-hand the importance of both. It is no secret that MONEY is required to support one’s goal of a college education. It is no secret that UBMS is interested in helping each student earn the MONEY needed to attend and graduate from college within four to six years. The secret is how you earn the MONEY. College funding is not going to come as a result of your part-time job. Over my 18year career with TRIO, I have had hundreds of students tell me that they are getting a job to save MONEY for school. They end up earning money for a cell phone bill, car insurance and perhaps even a car… but rarely does that student have any significant money saved for college. Don’t fall for this trap. In fact, I want you to avoid it at all costs. Making a job your priority early in life is a great way to limit your opportunities. High school involvement, community service and

leadership opportunities are usually the better investment. A $500 scholarship based on your high school resume is worth far more than $500 earned at your part-time job. My math tells me that one would need to work almost 80 hours or two months to make $500. Saving $500, when you have other financial obligations could take nearly four times as long. Is your time better spent having fun and building skills, or flipping burgers?

The last chapter is aptly titled, No Excuses! As you reflect over the last year of school, your personal life, your college planning I hope that you clearly see evidence of a “No excuses” mantra. As a TRIO UBMS student, it is important that you attack issues or problems head-on and take advantage of opportunities. Frankly, you should be in the business of creating opportunities. Making things happen, and not taking any excuses from yourself or others for not trying. This “No Excuses” mantra doesn’t mean that you won’t fail; it doesn’t mean you will always win. It does mean you will always put your best foot forward and effort will be 100%. “No Excuses” means leaving it all on the court/classroom/lab/field…

UBMS Attending Summer Conferences Congratulations to Shylee, Lili, Angelica, Zainab, Moe, and Taylor for their acceptance in the MAEOPP Girls in STEM conference in Indianapolis, IN May 28—30th. Mrs. Morgan will be in touch regarding transportation and other needs.

UBMS Bridge Class of 2015  All UBMS seniors who have been invited to attend the Bridge Summer Component should be fully admitted and enrolled in their classes by now.  Students should also have completed the 2014-2015 FAFSA and completed the WSU Summer Financial Aid Application. Students should complete these documents in order to purchase their textbooks for the summer program. UBMS will not purchase textbooks for bridge students. Summer Financial Aid will be used.

A N N O U N C E M E N T S  ACT Dates and Waivers Thank you to those UBMS students who made it a priority to take the UBMS administered ACT test. Test results for all summer juniors and seniors will be used to build summer courses. This information is key to your participation. Those junior and senior students who don’t have the data available from our internal test will not participate in the summer program. The

Applications for the MAEOPP 100: Men of Excellence Conference will be released in the weeks to come. Students interested in participating should contact Mrs. Morgan for an application and instructions.

UBMS Summer 2015 Opportunities Bethel Summer Science Institute applications have been mailed. Selected UBMS Sophomores will be notified soon. Select UBMS students will have the opportunity to attend a summer class at Wichita Area Technical College in lieu of summer science courses. If you received a letter in the mail with an application for WATC, please complete the application and return it to Ms. Santiago immediately. WE need to notify the school of the number of students who chose to participate.  UBMS Community Assistant Application will be available May 1st. Those students who wish to be considered for this staff liaison position should submit their applications to Mrs. Morgan by May 15th for full consideration.

I N F OC US Lance Onstott, UBMS Assistant Director One of the first events of the summer program each year is for all incoming juniors and seniors to participate in the last national ACT Test day. As long as you meet certain

criteria, UBMS will sign you up and pay for you to take the national college admissions exam. Not a bad deal! This year will be no different. You spend a great amount of time preparing yourself intellectually and honing test-taking skills aimed at testing success. This time is spent in the classroom learning the content that is tested. Additional time is spent mastering specific test-taking strategies. There is more to being successful than what we have already talked about. Preparing yourself mentally and emotionally is vital to your ACT performance. 1) Talk positively to yourself. Success comes in a “can,” not a “cannot.” Learn to think positively by mentally replacing “cannot” with “can.” Negative statements such as, “I will never pass this test,” “I know I can’t get this,” or “I’m not smart enough to get this score,” are counterproductive, and they hinder both studying and the test-taking process. In order to eliminate negative thoughts, you must first take notice of them when they occur and then take steps to remove them from your mind. Replace them with a positive thought immediately. As you walk into the classroom on the day of the test, repeatedly say to yourself, “I have studies, I will do my best, and I will succeed.” 2) Think positively about yourself. Think positively with the help of visualization. Try this: while in a relaxed mood, close your eyes and envision yourself walking into the test room, perfectly calm and confident. Now, imagine yourself taking each section of the test without any difficulty and with great calmness. See yourself answering the items quickly and correctly. Watch yourself exiting the test area with confidence because you know that you performed extremely well. With these visualization techniques, you can mentally and emotionally practice taking the test in a confident and calm manner. Coaches encourage their peak performing athletes to use daily visualization exercises in order to increase their abilities in running, jumping, shooting, etc. If you wish to be successful, envision yourself being successful. You mind in a powerful tool. Use it. 3) Act positively toward yourself. On the day of the test, act positively. Even if you do not “feel” completely confident, you should stride into the test site with your head held high and a bounce in your


 TRIO Upward Bound Math Science step. Show both yourself and your peers that you are at ease and in complete control of the situation. Present yourself as someone who knows that he or she will be successful. Acting confidently will actually help you feel confident. I also want to take a moment to highlight what we are doing as a program to strategically prepare each of you for testing success. As many of you know, incoming juniors and seniors all completed an internal  testing of the ACT this past Saturday, April 11. We have contracted with a third-party to provide this testing, and to also score each students performance. This data will be the foundation we use to design individualized ACT prep curriculum for this upcoming summer and into the upcoming

academic year. The results for each individual student will include the following: Student Summary: Used to identify what skills individual students will need to review throughout the year. Item Analysis: Used in a conversation with students about why they got certain problems wrong, and how they can get them right next time.
