Good day, Beloved!

told him that is was easy. I submit to you that our alum should invite this person to get off his bus!

The transition from Good to GREAT is ongoing at the UBMS office and I hope the transition is happening within your publically-traded corporation as well. Last month our time was spent on Level 5 leadership and understanding what our results, whether they be stock prices or grades, say about our leadership and work ethic. If your GPA (Stock price) is not where it should be, what does that say about your company? Business is a results-driven enterprise and your life should be too!

Surrounding ourselves with experts is a solid leadership tenet demonstrated by titans of industry. If it works for Fortune 500 companies, why won’t it work for your life? If your best friend has a 1.5 GPA is that the person you ask for study advice? Do you ask the guy who has never had a job to give you a mock interview? Do you let people who have no dreams, take yours and walk on them? You are the company you keep and the persons who sit on your management team have an impact on your life and your accomplishments. If they aren’t the best at what they do…why should they be on your dream team?

Chapter three focuses on the concept team selection. THE RIGHT PEOPLE MATTER! Again, thinking of your life as your publicallytraded corporation, who is on your management team? What roles do they play? Author Jim Collins simply asks the question of “Who is on your bus? And what seat are they sitting in?” The “people on your bus” are the people that are surrounding you and giving you advice. Do these people generally know what they are talking about? Are they the best people to provide advice on the matters where you need counsel? I recently had a former UBMS student tell me that he was surprised that college was so hard because his friends had

As you continue on your journey, take some time to evaluate those persons whom you have allowed to be on your team. If their value isn’t apparent, invite them to get off your bus or switch their seat. Don’t let them continue to ride…it’s bad for you and it’s bad for them. Once your bus is full with the right people and everyone is in the right seat, you will be ready to ride off into your future!

UBMS “GOOD TO GREAT” BLOG http://ubmsgoodtogreat.wordpress.com/

The UBMS blog is now in full effect! The blog is an opportunity to receive chapter summaries and key concepts/take-a-ways from the book. It will be updated WEEKLY with a new blog post. EACH STUDENT IS REQUIRED to comment and share their thoughts on the book weekly. Each individual blog post has a comment/”Leave Reply” box that will allow you to post your thoughts and feelings. This is not meant to be a strenuous activity and/or just “one more thing to do,” but rather a fun way for UBMS to dialogue about the book and have loosely structured educated conversations. Also, if you haven’t had time to read all of the chapters, the ENTIRE “Good to Great” Audio book can be found on the blog for your listening pleasure!

Curriculum Coordinator’s Corner by Ms. Karen Rogers

THE MORE YOU KNOW…I am honored and excited to join the staff of Upward Bound Math Science to serve as their new Curriculum Coordinator. Having experience in an environment of Computer Science, Management, and Information Technology, I also have an extensive background in the training industry. The Upward Bound Math Science Regional Center has a great track record of success. As Curriculum Coordinator, I realize that there is so much to learn and yet so much to do. But I’m confident that together, as a team, we will accomplish even greater things. As the newness of this position slowly wears off, I look forward to working with our students, meeting their parents, visiting with school counselors, and developing plans that will allow everyone to be successful on their journey to “greatness.” What is total success, anyway? Total Success =  Good health, physical well-being  Positive attitude in mind, emotions, and personality  Good academic performance  Active social activities, personal skills, leadership  Sufficient financial, business and other real-life skills

Suggestions for you to achieve your total success  Invest in your physical well-being: exercise. Your body is the vehicle to carry your wisdom, knowledge and everything to your future. Good health will help you study more effectively.  Invest in your studies, the foundation of your career and future. Get to know yourself, your professor and the course, choose the best study style that fits you. Know what to learn and learn it well. Ms. Rogers joined UBMS on January 14, 2013.

Invest in your social skills, friendships, leadership abilities, and relationships. Academic success alone will not bring you success and happiness in your personal life. Entertainment is essential, reenergize yourself. Balanced entertainment will actually help you study. Take care of your finances, and balance work with study.

There is greatness within you. I will continue to encourage you to let your light shine . . .
