trina smith
head coach • sixth season
Trina Smith enters her sixth season at the helm of the Raider volleyball program and continues to build it into a contender. During the 2009 campaign, Wright State started the year by winning seven of its first eight matches, the best start for the Raiders since going 10-1 to begin the 2001 season. WSU also won its first tournament title since 2006 in taking the Golden Grizzly Invitational crown with wins over Canisius, Oakland and North Texas. Middle blocker Shaunda Sandifer was selected AllMidwest Region by the American Volleyball Coaches Association after being named All-Horizon League for the second straight season. Off the court, WSU received a Team Academic Award from the AVCA and Tina Paunicka was honored with Wright State’s Dr. Carl Benner Female Scholar-Athlete Award for the second consecutive year by having the top grade-point average by a junior or senior in the entire athletic department. In 2008, Smith guided the Raiders to 15 victories - including ten in Horizon League play - with wins over Dayton, Indiana State and Niagara. The ten league wins were the most by a WSU team since the 2001 season and was just the third time in program history that the Green and Gold topped the 10-win mark in league play. WSU led the Horizon League in blocks and was second in the league in digs.
2007 saw Wright State tie for third in the Horizon League standings with Valparaiso and advance to the semifinals of the conference tournament. In 2006, the Raiders improved their win total by four and finished in a tie for second in the Horizon League standings, the highest finish by WSU since joining the conference in 1994. In Smith’s first season at the helm in 2005, Wright State nearly pulled off the unthinkable as, despite being the seventh seed in the Horizon League Tournament, the Raiders advanced all the way to the championship match, knocking off #6 seed Butler, #4 seed and host UIC and then #2 seed Cleveland State in the process. WSU was then just one win away from making the NCAA Tournament and battled Loyola down to the wire before falling to the Ramblers in five games in the finals. Named the fifth head coach in program history on April 21, 2005, Smith came to WSU after an eightyear stint as an assistant coach at the University of South Carolina, where she was involved with all aspects of the Gamecock program. Her duties included overseeing the team’s academic progress, serving as the recruiting coordinator and coaching the middle blockers. During her tenure there, the Gamecocks posted a record of 14484 with five seasons of 20 wins or more and made five appearances in the NCAA Tournament, three times advancing to the second round. Along with her duties at South Carolina, Smith also worked as a coach for the Irmo Juniors club program in 1999. Before joining the South Carolina staff, Smith spent three seasons as an assistant coach at St. Mary’s College in Moraga, California. There she was responsible for recruiting, scheduling and preparing practice plans. She also served as the interim head coach for the Gaels in early 1996.
Prior to St. Mary’s, Smith coached a year at Catalina High School in Arizona and coached Cactus Juniors, a club team in Tucson. Smith graduated from the University of Arizona in 1994 with a degree in communications. A middle blocker, she lettered all four years for the Wildcats in volleyball and earned three letters as a small forward in basketball. During her playing days at Arizona, Smith was selected to the Pacific 10 Conference’s All-Freshman Team and finished her career ranked in the Wildcat top 10 in solo blocks, block assists and digs. In 2000, she was selected to the conference’s All-Decade Team. As a senior in 1993, Smith led Arizona to a final #16 ranking and an appearance in the NCAA West Regional finals as the Wildcats became the first Pac-10 team to ever defeat UCLA and Stanford in the same season. Arizona overall made two trips to the NCAA Tournament during Smith’s career. In 1990, Smith participated at the U.S. Olympic Festival in Minneapolis, taking home the silver. A native of Maywood, Illinois, Smith attended Proviso East High School. She won MVP honors her senior year and was selected to the West Suburban and all-conference teams her junior and senior campaigns. She also played on the West Team at the 1990 Sport Festival, winning a silver medal. Smith also lettered in volleyball all four years and in softball and basketball three times. Smith is a graduate of the Women’s Coaching Academy and of the Sports Management Institute. She is active in the AVCA in the selection of the all-region team and in the top 25 coaches poll voting. Smith also was part of the selection committee in the hiring of Bob Grant as Wright State’s new athletic director. The daughter of S.L. and Alma Smith, Smith has three brothers and three sisters.

Andy riesenberg
assistant coach • second season
Andy Riesenberg is in his second year as an assistant volleyball coach at Wright State, having joined the staff in June, 2009. Riesenberg came to WSU after serving as an assistant coach for one
season at Southern Indiana University. In 2008, the Screaming Eagles were eighth in the nation in blocks at 2.43 per set as they finished 18-15 overall and 9-8 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. USI also advanced to the GLVC championship match for the first time since 2004 before falling to Lewis. Prior to Southern Indiana, Riesenberg served as the Director of Volleyball Operations at the MidAmerica Sports Center in Louisville. His duties included directing adult leagues, high school and club tournaments, camps, a youth program, and advertising. A Cincinnati native, Riesenberg has an extensive background at the club level, where he has coached in Louisville, Chicago, and Cincinnati.
He most recently coached for the Mid-America Volleyball Association (MAVA) and the Presentation Academy, leading the 18-Blue squad to three third-place tournament finishes and the 18-Elite squad to five top-10 tournament finishes. His 18-Blue squad ended the season with a top 15 regional ranking and was in the top 15 of the Junior Volleyball Director’s Association. During his coaching career, Riesenberg coached and promoted players to schools such as Ohio State, South Florida, Cincinnati and Louisville. Riesenberg earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the College of Mount St. Joseph in 2003.
Lizaiha Garcia
assistant coach • second season
Lizaiha Garcia is in her second year with the Wright State volleyball coaching staff. Garcia joined the Raiders coaching staff after a playing career that includes experience at the collegiate and professional levels. The Beavercreek, Ohio, native was an All-Conference performer while in high school and took her talents to Buffalo where she was a
standout libero for the Bulls. Garcia not only has a local connection after coaching and playing with the Dayton Juniors Club Volleyball program, but was a member of the LVSF Professional Volleyball League in Puerto Rico. Garcia was the team captain and starting libero for Vaqueras de Bayamon during the 2007-2008 season after finishing a four-year playing career at Buffalo. While a member of the Bulls volleyball program, Garcia was a mainstay on the floor as a four year starter as their libero and finished her career as the all-time digs leader. While with the Bulls, Garcia was named the team’s Most Valuable Player in 2006 and 2007, along with being selected as the team’s top newcomer during her rookie year on campus. The four-year starter ended her career as the school’s all-time
leader in digs and the single season digs record holder. During her senior season she led the squad in digs and tied for second in service aces. She was twice named the athletic departments Athlete of the Week and ranks seventh on the Mid-American Conference’s digs list. Along with her experience on the college and professional courts, Garcia has a wealth of volleyball knowledge. She has run camps and clinics for the Buffalo City School Districts and ran camps during her time on campus at Buffalo. In 2006, Garcia worked with the Dayton Juniors Volleyball Club as an assistant coach, along with serving as the volunteer head coach for Barnabus High School in New York. Garcia graduated with her B.A. in Communication from SUNY-Buffalo in 2008 and is also bilingual (Spanish).
