2010-11 Season Outlook A new era in Wright State women’s basketball begins this season as Mike Bradbury was named as the sixth head coach in team history on April 21, 2010. While Bradbury may be new to WSU, he is definitely familiar with area college basketball as he previously served as an assistant at Xavier and Cincinnati and was the head coach for three seasons at Morehead State. He won’t be the only new face in 2010-11, however, as the Raiders also have a new coaching staff in assistants Harry Elifson, Valerie King and Katrina Merriweather along with Director of Operations Tarah Muntz and Administrative Assistant Sara Vest. Newness will be on the court as well as of the 13 players on this year’s roster, seven are freshmen. They, along with four seniors and a pair of juniors, look to improve on last year’s 11-19 record and seventh-place finish in the Horizon League. SENIORS The Raiders return four seniors this season in guard LaShawna Thomas, forward Ta-myra Davis, guard Paige Lowe and forward Tanni Scott. Selected to the Horizon League All-Newcomer Team in 2008, Thomas has put together a strong career at Wright State, becoming the 17th player to reach the 1000-point plateau last season. Heading into her senior campaign, Thomas is tied for 14th on the all-time scoring list with 1039 points and ranks in the top ten in field goals made and attempted along with scoring average. A preseason Second Team AllLeague selection in 2010-11, Thomas led the Raiders in scoring last season at 12.1 points per game, was second in steals with 52 and third in assists with 76. Davis averaged 7.6 points per contest last year as she shot 49 percent from the field and led the squad with a 5.9 rebounding average. Her .557 shooting percentage two seasons ago was the third-best in Raider history and her .525 percentage in the two years combined is second all-time. After not seeing much playing time her first two seasons, Lowe appeared in every game with 23 starts in 200910, dishing out just over two assists per game while shooting 80 percent at the foul line. She scored a career-high nine points at Miami last year and collected five rebounds on two different occasions. Scott helped the Raiders defeat Youngstown State in the first round of

the Horizon League Tournament last season as she scored nine points off the bench, hit all four of her shots and gathered in six rebounds. JUNIORS Forward Molly Fox and guard Maria Bennett are the two juniors returning for the Raiders this year. Fox appeared in every game with 13 starts, averaging 8.6 points and 4.8 rebounds per game as she shot 54 percent from the field, the fourth-best ever in a WSU single season. Her numbers were even better in Horizon League play as she averaged 9.1 points and 4.9 rebounds while shooting 57 percent from the floor. Bennett connected on 60 threepointers last year, the fifth-most in Raider history, as she averaged 7.1 points per game. After just two seasons, Bennett is seventh all-time in threes made with 98 and ninth in threes attempted with 284. FRESHMEN Seven freshmen, six of which inked letters of intent during last year’s fall signing period, round out the roster. They are forward MaRanda Boddie, guard Courtney Boyd, guard KC Elkins, forward Kirsten Gliesmann, guard Mur Hagerman, forward Elizabeth Kelly and guard Kayla Lamotte. Boddie joins the Raiders after averaging 12.8 points, 10.2 rebounds and 2.6 blocks per game last season for Springfield (Ohio) High School. A First Team All-Greater Western Ohio Conference Central Division selection as a senior, Boddie’s high school coach was Wright State Hall of Famer Nettie Carter. Boyd averaged 30.1 points and 11.3 rebounds per game last season for nearby Brookville (Ohio) High School as she shot 80 percent from the foul line and 55 percent from the field. A Second Team All-State performer as a senior, Boyd holds school records for points in a game (43), season (662) and career (1576) and is Brookville’s all-time leader in three-pointers with 108. Elkins joins the Green and Gold after earning Third Team All-State honors last season at West Jefferson (Ohio) High School. The school’s alltime leading scorer for both boys and girls, Elkins was nominated for the 2010 McDonalds All-American game. Gliesmann, a low post player from Center Grove High School in Indiana, averaged 9.2 rebounds, 3.1 steals and 1.7 blocks per game last season. GliesWSU R A ID E R S .C OM

mann, who was selected as one of the Top 60 Seniors by Hoosier Basketball Magazine, owns school records for rebounds and blocked shots. Hagerman also was named to the Top 60 Seniors list and 4A All-State after completing her career at Pendleton Heights High School. She averaged 12.5 points and five rebounds per game her senior year as she shot 75 percent from the free throw line. Kelly averaged 17.7 points and 10.1 rebounds per contest for Carlinville (Illinois) High School in 2009-10 as the Cavaliers finished 24-4 and posted a mark of 83-27 during Kelly’s four-year career. She is the school’s all-time leader in points with 1933 and in blocks with 129. Lamotte, who joined the program over the summer, was an All-Southwest District and All-Greater Miami Conference selection as a senior as she averaged 11 points and eight rebounds per game. SCHEDULE Wright State once again faces a difficult schedule in 2010-11, especially considering that the Raiders start the season with eight of their first 10 games on the road. WSU begins the campaign on Friday, November 12, on the road at IUPUI before concluding the Indiana road swing on Sunday, November 14, at Ball State. The Raiders then visit Delaware State before opening the home portion of their schedule on Monday, November 29, against crosstown rival Dayton. December opens with a home matchup against Miami on the 1st, followed by five consecutive road contests at Akron, Ohio, Longwood, Southern Illinois and Cincinnati. Wright State then wraps up nonleague play on Wednesday, December 22, at home versus Central Florida. WSU rings in the New Year and Horizon League play in Wisconsin as the Raiders take on Milwaukee on New Year’s Eve, followed by Green Bay on January 2. The remainder of the 18-game Horizon League slate completes the schedule as Wright State has five home games in January, two in February and the final two versus Green Bay and Milwaukee in March. The Horizon League Tournament begins on Monday, March 7, and continues through Sunday, March 13, with an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament on the line. 3

MIKE BRADBURY HEAD COACH FIRST YEAR

Head Coach Mike Bradbury

Mike Bradbury was named as the sixth Raider women’s basketball coach at Wright State on April 21, 2010. Bradbury, who led Morehead State to a 50-44 record over the last three seasons, posted a 22-11 slate in 2009-10, including a bid to the post-season Women’s Basketball Invitational. He also spent time as an assistant coach at Xavier and Cincinnati. “Mike emerged from a great pool of candidates,” Grant said. “His success as head coach at Morehead State along with his recruiting experience in this region made him extremely appealing to us. He has been a key recruiter in this region and helped secure several Top 25 recruiting classes to Xavier and Cincinnati, not to mention a highly-ranked class in his first year at Morehead

State. I am looking forward to Coach Bradbury leading our program as we strive for excellence in women’s basketball.” Bradbury was an integral part in signing the nation’s top-ranked player at Xavier in 2006-07. While at UC, he helped sign three top 25 classes. In each of his last ten seasons as an assistant coach, his teams qualified for postseason play. In all, 12 of the 17 teams he has been involved with have made postseason appearances, and nearly every team has posted a .500 record or better. Bradbury spent five seasons at Xavier, and all five resulted in postseason appearances, including two NCAA tournament berths. In his initial season at Xavier, in 2002-03, the Musketeers went 20-10 overall and advanced the NCAA Tournament first round after posting a 12-19 record the season before. During the 2006-07 season, Bradbury helped lead Xavier to a 26-8 record and another NCAA Tournament berth. In between, his teams made three consecutive WNIT appearances, inclu-ding a quarterfinal game in 2004-05. In his five seasons, Xavier was 106-50 (.679 WRIGH T

Director of Athletics

Director of Athletics Bob Grant Progress has always been a major part of Bob Grant’s strong suits through the years and that has certainly shown in his tenure as Director of Athletics at Wright State University as he enters his third year in the position. Being named in the summer of 2008, the Dayton-area native and Wright State graduate was no newcomer to the Raiders as he has been involved in every aspect of the department since hired as development director in 1992. Since taking the reins, Grant has focused on the all aspects of the department and grown the University’s and Raider name in the public through initiatives to spotlight the student-athlete. Among these has been the continuation of an overall cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better for 24 straight quarters, revamping the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, signing a deal that included Nike as the major equipment and uniform supplier and helping create more national exposure such as the men’s basketball team appearance on the ESPN format a WSU-record five times in 2010-11. This type of focus has led to bigger and better exposure that resulted in upgrading schedules and a significant increase in sponsorships and fund-raising. Part of these includes a new cell phone deal with Sprint and tremendous

facility improvements have been planned such turf to soccer fields and light to the softball stadium and many more plans. Success on the field has blossomed as well recently as WSU had its highest finish in the Horizon league’s McCafferty Trophy standing since 2003, men’s basketball recorded its fourth straight 20-win season and the women’s soccer team has posted five straight 10-win campaigns. This success has led to coaches being hired away to BCS schools such as Clemson and Arkansas but also has afforded Grant the opportunity to hire high-caliber head coaches. Through the years, he has had a hand in the hiring of each coach that patrols the Raiders’ sideline through the recent years. In his short time as Director of Athletics and under difficult financial strains and budget cuts, Grant has instituted other changes to improve the fan and the student-athlete experience such as the Raider Lounge, a new Kids Zone, “Lights Out” introductions for basketballs and a new Raider branding within the Nutter Center. Prior to being named Director of Athletics, Grant implemented a comprehensive fund raising plan for athletics many of which are still in use today. Grant cultivated and oversaw the “Raider Club” annual giving program, the Raider auction, golf outings, fan trips, special events and the department’s dealer car program. Paramount among Grant’s accomplishments were the department’s success under his supervision in countless fund raising and development projects, such as The Platinum Seating Program, The Mills Player Complex, Alumni Soccer Field, The Schwarz Hall of Fame Lobby, Alumni Soccer Dugouts and the Setzer Pavilion/Mills Morgan Center. Grant spearheaded athletics department search committees that have hired over a half dozen coaches and administrators including, most recently, conference

WSU R A ID E R S .C OM

championship coaches Brad Brownell and Rob Cooper from men’s basketball and baseball, respectively. In 2006, Grant initiated the athletics department’s first-ever strategic plan. This plan is currently serving as a short and long-term roadmap guiding the department into the future. Grant took over supervision and oversight for the department’s $8 million budget in 2006. Monitoring closely with the athletics’ business manager, Grant worked with all head coaches on fiscal issues including budget planning, preparation, management and evaluation. Beginning in 1999, Grant took on sport supervision, closely overseeing individual teams on a day-to-day basis. Grant dealt directly with head coaches on all facets of their programs including scheduling, recruiting, academics, discipline and annual evaluations. His experience in this area included oversight of swimming & diving, women’s soccer and softball programs as well as the men’s basketball, men’s soccer, golf and baseball programs. In 1997 Grant directed the development of all-new athletic logos, resulting in a significant increase in the university’s licensing revenue. He served on the university’s licensing committee from 1997-2005, oversaw the marketing and promotions area from 19972002 and directed the Hall of Fame voting/induction process from 19922002. Among his professional highlights, Grant was a 1994 NCAA speaker/ presenter at the annual NACDA conference in Atlanta, Georgia, and was awarded the 1998 Wright State President’s Award for Excellence in collaboration. He also graduated from The Sports Management Institute in January, 2006. Grant received his MBA in marketing from Wright State in June, 2000 and is currently an adjunct instructor in the Raj Soin College of Business. He and his wife, Kim, have a daughter, Jordan, and a son, Braden.
