Mathew Guido Photographer www.mathewguido.com
“The world is a very complicated place, it always has been and always will be. I try my best to focus on what I can do within my own life, not taking for granted the people who came before me that gave me this freedom to be an artist. Within my own family’s story, just the fact that I can do what I love, believe in it, and call that “work” is really a nice time to be alive in the world.”
Local to Toronto and saturated with creativity, Mathew Guido uses photography to capture and explore the full range of human emotion. From editorial to commercial, the 27 year old marvel effortlessly manipulates light; creating beautiful portraits that enhance and illustrate the essence of human existence. The bold titles used for his editorial pieces illuminate a theme that radiates throughout each photograph, and are evidence of a style that is distinctly his own. Photos by Mathew Guido

the tuve hotel HONG KONG
Photos Courtesy of The Tuve Hotel
www.tuve.hk
In a world of uber-homey hotels, the TUVE Hotel is making a statement for the uncomfortable. Inspired by a Swedish lake in the wintertime, the TUVE Hotel perfectly captures the chill and roughness of a frozen terrain. The rooms themselves hold everything that a good hotel needs: king-size bed, walk-in shower, etc. but the dĂŠcor and materials elevate this hotel to something more than just good. Instead, the space lends itself to inner reflection and meditation; the coldness of the interior contrasts with the warm of the natural materials and they work together to enhance this feeling.
The design of the space uses natural woods, iron, and oxidized iron. The hotel’s restaurant, The Silver Room stands behind a black door and opens onto an intimate space. The subtle lighting décor fits well with the selection of Italian dishes that is served there. With it’s bold design, The TUVE Hotel stands out in the colorful city of Hong Kong.

Bruno Walpoth Sculptor
www.walpoth.com Photo Courtesy of Bruno Walpoth
Bruno Walpoth’s artistic journey pays tribute to a centuries-long tradition of wood sculptures. Bruno himself comes from a family of sculpturists and his work reflects the traditional and reframes it for a contemporary audience. He carefully sands the wood to give it a skinlike appearance, adding a sense of hyperrealism to his figures. Every groove and mark enhances and mimics the varied textures and nuances of the human body. Inspired by late Gothic and early Italian Renaissance, Bruno’s sculptures capture a single, solitary moment of humanity and highlight the vulnerability of the human form.
“Bei meinen figuren geht es nicht um das portrait, es geht um die sehnsucht die wir alle in uns tragen”
“My figures are not about the portrait, it is about the desire we all carry within us“
This Mexican resort has been turned into a sci-fi dreamscape. The beautiful Mar Adrentro hotel in Los Cabos is designed by talented architect Miguel Ángel Aragonés. This modern and minimal hotel exerts simplicity and cleanliness. Aragonés describes the concept of this hotel to be “wellness”, as expressed by its all-white buildings and large windows that allow in natural light. The buildings are completely white on both the outside and inside, accented with natural wood. The white beautifully contrasts the various colours that light up each room. The most unique thing about this hotel is that it is built almost entirely on the ocean, with paths connecting the buildings, lounges and pool to one another. The lounge area is located in the middle of the buildings and consists of minimal designer furniture. It is enclosed in a large nest-like dome; a design that contributes to the hotel’s overall heavenly atmosphere. It is possible and encouraged to jump into the ocean and pool from the paths.

José Micard Teixeira From his ebook, Tattoos on a Grain of Sand

“
I
no longer have patience for certain things, not because I’ve become arrogant, but simply because I reached a point in my life where I do not want to waste more time
with what displeases me or hurts me. I have no patience for cynicism, excessive criticism and demands of any nature. I lost the will to please those who do not like me, to love those who do not love me and to smile at those who do not want to smile at me. I no longer spend a single minute on those who lie or want to manipulate. I decided not to coexist anymore with pretense, hypocrisy, dishonesty and cheap praise. I do not tolerate selective erudition nor academic arrogance. I do not adjust either to popular gossiping. I hate conflict and comparisons. I believe in a world of opposites and that’s why I avoid people with rigid and inflexible personalities. In friendship I dislike the lack of loyalty and betrayal. I do not get along with those who do not know how to give a compliment or a word of encouragement. Exaggerations bore me and I have difficulty accepting those who do not like animals. And on top of everything I have no patience for anyone who does not deserve my patience.”

Kanin Winter Cabin by OFIS — www.ofis.ca This tiny aluminum-clad cabin by OFIS Architekti is a shelter for climbers travelling over the mountains of the Slovenian-Italian border. The architectural firm worked with structural engineering group, CBD to create the Kanin Winter Cabin which is designed to resist extreme cold weather conditions and offers a refuge for hikers. The cabin is tiny, only 9.7 square meters with three shelf-like floors and is made from a combination of timber, glass, and aluminum panels. The cabin looks out off the edge of the mountain and is held into place by cables. The design of the project is modest with three wood platforms that face the valley and offer a precarious and romantic view through the panoramic window. The Kanin Winter Cabin is an ideal spot for thrill-seekers looking to see what life is like on the edge.
