C RUISE NEWS
New Brand Ambassador > This Morning star joins Princess
N
ot content with launching the revolutionary Ocean Medallion, Princess Cruises has now announced the name of its first ever brand ambassador. We are very pleased to report that the ambassador in question is none other than (drum roll please)… This Morning’s Phillip Schofield! His inaugural sailing is due to depart for the Mediterranean this spring, with Phillip being treated to a very special onboard experience. As a first-time cruiser and self-confessed wine enthusiast, he will receive a unique wine and food experience that will be captured on film.

P&O 6 Cruise118.com
It is a fantastic way of offering potential passengers the chance to see just how spoilt they will be on-board. “I am very happy to be working with Princess Cruises for my first ever cruise,” Phillip said. “They clearly take wine and dining as seriously as I do, so I can’t wait to get on-board and experience it for myself. I also plan on being back on-board to try out the new Ocean Medallion later in the year.” We are sure that Phillip Schofield will catch the cruising bug, and in doing so, introduce cruise holidays to a group of people who might never have considered them.
Sail off to lesser-frequented shores on an inspiring Discovery cruise holiday. Combining classic ports of call with some intriguing lesserknown destinations, P&O Cruises’ smaller ship Adonia and mid-sized ships Arcadia, Aurora and Oriana will take you on an exciting journey full of new experiences, leaving you with plenty of stories to tell. It’s a chance to go off the beaten track and enjoy a real change of scenery as you immerse yourself in new sights, local specialities and some unique experiences.
Education for Girls around the World Celebrity Cruises has announced a two-year partnership with Malala Fund. With the shared commitment to diversity, inclusion and gender equality, the brand is partnering with Malala Fund whose mission is to secure 12 years of safe, free quality education for every girl. Inspired by Malala’s mission and advances in furthering girl’s education, Celebrity is honoured to name 19-year old Nobel Laureate and U.N. Messenger of Peace Malala Yousafzai as the Godmother of their newest ship, Celebrity Edge, debuting late in 2018. Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, the President and CEO of Celebrity Cruises, said that Malala’s dedication to girls’ education sets an example worth following. “Partnering with Malala Fund was a natural fit as we share the same passion and commitment to an incredible cause. We believe in opportunities for all, especially as our crew on-board represent more than 50 different cultures - and amazing stories of achievement, education and economic advancement.”
A new digital era The Ocean Medallion which features on-board Royal Princess from January 2018, will enable passengers to order food and drinks on demand; speed up the port embarkation and disembarkation process; locate friends and family around the ship; access their staterooms as they approach the door and purchase
merchandise without any transaction. The Ocean Medallions, which have a chip similar to Oyster cards on the London Underground, will be worn by guests on a wristband, round the neck – or simply in a pocket or bag. Information will flash up on crew monitors, meaning dining room staff will be told about allergies and bartenders will know a guest’s favourite drink – and even if they’re celebrating a birthday or anniversary. Offering the very best personalised service.

Vegan? With the rise in popularity of vegan diets, it was only a matter of time before a cruise line offered something very special to its plant-based passengers.
A Royally busy few years Royal Caribbean is certainly going to be busy. Its next new ship will be Symphony of the SeasSM, an Oasis-class ship to be launched in 2018. Another Oasis-class ship will follow in 2021 and the first of its Icon-class vessels in 2022. In between these new ships, Royal Caribbean will launch two enhanced Quantum-class ships, designated in-house as ‘Quantum Plus’ vessels. Quantum Plus 1 is due to set sail in 2019 followed by Quantum Plus 2 in 2020. Quantum 4 (also known as Quantum Plus), will set sail in 2019 and spend its first winter in China, and, >

Winter Sun in
P
&O Cruises is the world’s oldest cruise line, tracing its rich heritage back over 180 years. Its original name was the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company and the line’s success was due in large part to forging the sea routes of Empire to the Far East and Australia. These exotic voyages were made shorter with the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869. Now P&O Cruises have revealed a series of five, 10-night fly/cruise in the Arabian Gulf between January and April 2019. In addition, there’s a 20-night cruise to Dubai through the Suez Canal at the end of 2018 and 14-night cruise from Dubai to the Mediterranean in midApril 2019. The familiar style of the fleet of eight mid-size and larger ships attracts a clientele that’s fiercely loyal and who revel in the traditional interpretation of cruising. For these cruises from Dubai, the 2,016-passenger Oceana will be a perfect choice for cruising in such temperate seas. Although this ‘Sunshine Class’ ship entered service in 2003 there have been several refurbishments since – one is even scheduled for later in 2017. Undoubtedly a highly popular ship in the company’s fleet, the informal atmosphere makes Oceana particularly attractive to families as well as those
14 Cruise118.com
seeking creature comforts. There’s also a wealth of open deck space which will prove popular during these Arabian Gulf cruises when winter sun soothes and invigorates in equal measure. The 10-night fly/cruises will call at Sir Bani Yas Island (a nature reserve southwest of Abu Dhabi); Manama (capital of Bahrain); Khasab (on the Musandam Peninsula in Oman – often dubbed the ‘Norway of Arabia’ due to its fjord-like craggy inlets); Muscat (capital of the Sultanate of Oman); Salalah (a resortlike, lush city on the Arabian Sea in Oman); and Abu Dhabi (home to Ferrari World and some stunning museums) as well as Dubai. There’s a wealth of excursions from these varied ports which include camel racing; dune-buggying; museums of contemporary and Islamic art; Arabic souks; Heritage villages; biblical sites and some of the best shopping in the world. This carefully crafted programme of cruises will use the extensive network of flights by Emirates from London Gatwick, Heathrow; Newcastle; Birmingham; Manchester and Glasgow. Only a few decades ago Dubai was a port of some 25,000 inhabitants, living among a huddle of mudbrick houses, who worked mainly as pearl fishermen and merchants, trading from a maze of covered passageways and narrow alcoves. Today this dynamic Arab Emirate City-State is an ancient land with a 21st century vision.
Contact our cruise concierge today on 0800 980 6727
What sets this Emirate apart is that unlike its Arabian neighbours, Dubai’s wealth was founded on trade, with oil playing second fiddle. For centuries, heavily-laden dhows have docked at the port to unload their treasure of gleaming pearls, coveted silks and exotic spices. Now cruise ships unload their dollarladen human cargoes. If ever there was a port to indulge that great cruising pastime of shopping, it’s the commercial oasis of Dubai – a never-never land that’s been described as ‘Manhattan on speed’ and ‘Singapore on steroids’. Just seven hours away by air, visitors to Dubai can indulge in a host of familiar and not so familiar sports. Apart from some of the finest golfing in the world at such stunning courses as the Dubai Creek Golf Club, looking like a mini version of the Sydney Opera House; there is a host of watersports and scuba-diving on offer. Thrill-seekers can try a dune buggy safari in 4 x 4s, wadi-bashing, sand-skiing and even snow-skiing. Reflecting the omnipresent sand; camel riding - while not for the faint-hearted - is becoming popular, but racing them is definitely for the professionals.
Conventional wisdom used to be that winter cruising was for the idle rich and the plushly aged. Now more than ever, a seaborne escape from dark days and long nights is an affordable indulgence. Getting a winter tan, absorbing some local culture, recharging the batteries; these are all part of the heady cocktail that is on offer during a cruise in the Arabian Gulf.
Dubai
For guaranteed sunshine the Arabian Gulf is hard to beat, particularly when the Met Office forecast the fifth ‘named storm’ of the year and it’s only February. What’s more, a fly-cruise ensures you hit the ground running and avoid rough seas. As the nights begin to lengthen and television is full of adverts for cold remedies, thoughts turn to escaping permafrost on pavements. If there’s one holiday choice that’s certain to make friends and neighbours envious, it’s a winter cruise. With bragging rights like this and the convenience of flights to the Arabian Gulf from regional airports, it makes sense to follow nature’s lead and head south, just like migrating birds.

These include the 2,050-passenger Vision of the Seas from Royal Caribbean; as well as cruises with the Italian company MSC Cruises aboard the 4,363-passenger MSC Splendida. Most cruises are for seven nights, however, there’s a variety of longer durations available. A notable inclusion to the Gulf cruise roster is a sailing aboard the highlyrated Azamara Journey. This 10-night round-trip voyage from Dubai, departing 14 November 2017, calls at Khasab, Muscat (overnight), Manama (Bahrain), Doha, Abu Dhabi (overnight) and Dubai. Celebrity Cruises offers 10, 14, and 15-night cruises from Abu Dhabi aboard the much-acclaimed 2,170-passenger Celebrity Constellation. The 10-night ‘Arabian Coast Immersion’ sailings call at: Muscat (overnight); Khasab; Dubai (two overnights); before returning to Abu Dhabi for an overnight stay. The longer voyages call at ports in India and Sri Lanka. The discovery of oil transformed Abu Dhabi from a fishing village into a thriving metropolis, but it hasn’t forgotten its past. Skyscrapers sit side by side with mosques and bazaars. Cruise118.com 15

I’m lucky enough in my role to have experienced many new ship concepts and innovations so when invited to see the revealing of Celebrity Edge I did wonder what could possibly be that different/new. But, as always seems to be the case with Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd, the boundaries have been pushed and another exciting, innovative and revolutionary ship design has been designed.
A myriad of new accommodation types also achieves Richard’s goal of getting us closer to the sea, and Celebrity Cruises also asked their guests what else they wanted from a stateroom. The answer? Bigger bathroom, bigger bed, more storage, more living space. In the mock-ups you can see all of these have been achieved, and more. You can programme your own personal controls to set your stateroom lighting, blinds, temperature and an alarm service which gently turns on the lights before waking you with a tune! An app is also being developed to register as you approach your stateroom, automatically open your door, turn on your lights and open/ close your blind!

Currently, American passengers have to travel under one of 12 categories of licensed travel to Cuba, which include so called peopleto-people trips that involve a full-time schedule of engagement with Cuban people and culture. This is not the case for British visitors who have been able to fly to the Cuban capital Havana direct from London for years. Nor is this a stipulation for Brits opting to cruise to Cuba from U.S. ports. If ever there was a cruise destination that’s on everyone’s lips, it’s Cuba. Just 90 miles from the United States, the largest island in the Caribbean boasts powdery white beaches, fascinating history and some of the liveliest people you’ll ever meet. From the bright turquoise waters of Holguin to the festive streets of Santiago de Cuba, there’s plenty to discover and it’s easy to be captivated by the wide array of excursions, ranging from water-sports to following in the footsteps of one-time Havana resident Ernest Hemingway. Cuba’s tropical climate makes it especially appealing during the winter. The rainy season runs from May to October when temperatures and humidity are high, although summer is also a popular time for tourists, especially in July for Carnival in Santiago. It’s worth pointing out that the hurricane season lasts from June to November. Stuck in a time warp since the Cuban Revolution in the late 1950s, a visit to the island transports you to another era. The Cuban people are warm and inquisitive as most have never left the island and have lived under the same government their entire lives. But Cuba is changing - perhaps not as fast as residents would like - and for that reason alone, now is the time to go.
I
nterest in Cuba has reached fever pitch. In March 2016, Barack Obama made a historic visit that opened the floodgates for tourism to this fascinating Caribbean island. That same month the Rolling Stones played a free gig to 450,000 people. Just two months later the ‘social impact’ cruise line Fathom made history with the first U.S. cruise to Cuba in more than half a century. In a stroke Cuba was able to announce a revoking of the transport access imbalance that restricted any Cuban-born person, including those living in Cuba, to depart or arrive by sea. 28 Cruise118.com

The capital Havana boasts an array of Spanish colonial gems such as 16th century Castillo Del Morro, while in Old Havana colonial cobblestone streets wind past evocative buildings with Baroque façades. Over four miles long, the Malecón is famed for its views across Havana Bay. The city truly comes alive by night at historic hot spots such as the Tropicana Cabaret - the biggest nightclub in the city, showcasing productions to rival Las Vegas. Cruising around the island is the ideal way to see charming ports such as Cienfuegos the ‘Paris of Cuba’, a former sugar-trading hub on the island’s southern coast; and Santiago de Cuba, at the far eastern tip of the island. Cruising is the only option to see the whole island in a week as the roads and transport infrastructure are in a dire state of repair but it gives the opportunity to get a taste of Cuba’s culture and rhythms. Carnival’s Fathom brand ceases operations in June but they certainly blazed a trail in cruising to Cuba. Other companies have clamoured for permission to operate sailings to this once forbidden land and an increasing number of

cruise lines are now offering dedicated sailings from ports in Florida. NCL’s 2,004-passenger Norwegian Sky is the largest U.S. cruise ship offering cruises to Cuba. It is also the only cruise line offering 4-day cruises throughout 2017 that also overnight in Havana. One of their most popular excursions is a half-day tour in a vintage Buick, Chevrolet, Cadillac, Dodge, Ford, Mercury, Oldsmobile or Pontiac – vintage American cars that have been in everyday use in Cuba for decades. Other tours visit the Bocoy Rum Factory, established in 1878 to produce Ron Bocoy and the Legendario brand; before heading to one of the most famous cigar factories in Cuba - Romeo and Julieta where visitors have the opportunity to buy and see how the Cuban masters roll the cigar. Royal Caribbean has also just started cruises to Cuba aboard the 1,840-passenger Empress of the Seas. There’s a series of 5-night departures from Tampa between May and October 2017 to Havana which also call at Key West and Cozumel. On 4th November there’s a 6-night sailing from Tampa to Havana for an overnight stay in addition to Cozumel. There’s also a 5-night cruise from Miami departing 24th December which has an overnight stay in Havana combined with a visit to Cozumel. Carnival Cruises are offering a series of cruises to Cuba aboard the 2,052-passenger Carnival Paradise. There are 4-night sailings between May and October 2017 from Tampa that offer an overnight in Havana. These are in addition to two 5-night cruises ex Tampa in August and October that also call at Cozumel; and two 5-night cruises ex Tampa in August and September that have an overnight in Havana in addition to a visit to Key West. MSC Cruises are no stranger to Cuba, but to satisfy the surge in demand they have deployed MSC Opera and MSC Armonia – both 2,679-passenger vessels – to Havana where passengers can take advantage of multi-night stays. Cruises are of varying lengths with some calling at Varadero and Cayo Largo as well as a host of other Caribbean islands. For an authentic sailing experience, Star Clippers 170-passenger Star Flyer is offering cruises between December and January 2017 that range between 9- and 14-nights. These cruises operate between Havana and Cienfuegos and call at Cuban ports including: Casilda, Cayo Largo, and the Archipelago de los Canarreos, in addition to Grand Cayman and Little Cayman. Having recently celebrated its 500th anniversary, incomparable Havana is at once a Caribbean time-capsule and a living, breathing metropolis. The city exudes energy unlike any other in the world and is now staking pole position on many people’s cruise bucket lists.
