Season’s greetings from all the team at Cruise118! I would like to thank you for your business in 2019 and hope we can go on to help you with your cruise holiday in 2020 and the years to come. This magazine should give you some ideas and inspiration of where to go next and with which cruise line, and of course our Concierge team are on hand to help you on a personal level. 2019 has been another year of new ships with cruise lines bringing us even more unique, impressive and innovative product. And there’s so much more to come in 2020 with P&O Cruises’ Iona, Celebrity Cruises’ Apex, Royal Caribbean’s Odyssey of the Seas and MSC Cruises’ Virtuosa to name just a few. Though, new ships are not for everyone and we are also seeing a lot of interest in smaller ships and expedition itineraries as our customers want to experience more far flung, exotic and niche destinations. It has also been an exciting year for us here at Cruise118, and we are delighted to have been voted Best Online Cruise Agent at the Cruise International Wave Awards again this year. I’m also pleased to share that we have received a 3 star accreditation, the highest standard of workplace engagement, with The Sunday Times Best Companies to Work for – a great end to a fantastic 2019.

Sara Macefield is an awardwinning travel journalist of more than 20 years standing and has spent the last decade writing about the cruise industry. Having notched up more than 100 cruises, her most memorable trips have been to Alaska with its superb wildlife and sailing along Burma’s remote Chindwin River to villages far off the tourist track. She writes regularly for The Times and Daily Telegraph and has written for the Daily Mail, The Guardian, Daily Express and Woman & Home Magazine.

TRAVEL AGENT Thomas Cook collapse Staff at Cruise118 were incredibly saddened when the news broke that Thomas Cook had gone into liquidation on the morning of the 23rd September. Many of our current staff here are Cruise118.com have started their careers at Thomas Cook, Airtours or MyTravel, and there were family, friends and even old colleagues who previously worked with us having been personally affected by the collapse. Keen to help those in need, Cruise118 reached out to Thomas Cook employees based in the North West and offered workshops to help refresh their interview techniques, update their CV’s and build their confidence.

Earlier this year Carnival Cruise Line announced it was expanding its Fun Ambassadors Programme for 2020 – a scheme to help drive engagement and increase knowledge of the cruise line. Of the 12 new ambassadors, Cruise118’s very own Greg Hill was selected to be part of the programme. Speaking about being selected, Greg said: “There’s already so much to look forward to including plenty of opportunities to learn more about this fantastic cruise line and pass this on to our customers. So far, we are looking forward to a trip on-board the line’s brand-new ship – Mardi Gras – and an all-expenses paid trip to Ibiza for us to get together again!”

Rising Star

One of Cruise118’s staff members received a fantastic award this year at the annual Cruise Stars Awards. Head of Sales, Karina Stott won the awards for both Travel Agent Management Star and Travel Agent Rising Star at a glittering ceremony at the De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in London. The ceremony celebrated travel agents up and down the UK, as well as for selected cruise lines, with welcome drinks, lunch and a talk from inspirational guest speaker and Olympic rowing gold medallist, Tim Foster MBE. Well done Karina!

Celebrity Cruises’ logo features a singular ‘x’, usually featured on each ship’s funnel. The ‘x’ comes from the Greek letter chi, for ‘Chandris’ which is the name of the group who founded Celebrity Cruises in 1988.

The terms starboard and port refer to Old English, where starboard (steorboard) meant the side on which the ship is steered with oars. These were typically on the right-hand side as most people are right-handed. As the oar was on this side, the boat would tie up on the left, hence becoming port!

Cunard celebrated its 180-year anniversary this year! In 1839, Samuel Cunard was awarded the first British transatlantic steamship mail contract, which eventually grew into the cruise line we know and love today.

CRUISE NEWS

> BRAEMAR BREAKS WORLD RECORD

Fred. Olsen’s Braemar made history this year, breaking the world record to become the largest ship ever to traverse the Corinth Canal. The 24,344-ton ship made its way through the waterway on the 9th October, where the narrowest point only measures 24 metres! Clare Ward, Director of Product and Customer Service for the cruise line said: “This is such an exciting sailing and tremendous milestone in Fred. Olsen’s 171-year history, and we are thrilled to have been able to share it with our guests.” Fred. Olsen are planning another sailing in spring 2021 for a second attempt!

> PORTMIAMI WELCOMES DEVELOPMENT Miami is upgrading its cruise ports for five new terminals in what is the most dramatic remake of the port in recent decades. Overall, the cruise industry is devoting more than $1.5 billion to expand the offering in this popular port and allow more cruise lines to embark thousands of passengers on their Caribbean cruises. In 2019, 6.8 million people cruised from PortMiami, proving the need for an upgrade to the current infrastructure and the ever-increasing fleet of ships. Terminal developments derive from cruise lines including MSC Cruises, Carnival Corporation, Norwegian Cruise Line and Virgin Voyages, alongside headquarter offices for both Royal Caribbean and MSC Cruises.

> ROYAL CARIBBEAN EXPANDS PERFECT DAY COLLECTION Royal Caribbean has revealed it’s adding a new destination to the Perfect Day Collection – Lelepa, Vanuatu, situated northeast of Brisbane, Australia. The cruise line has advised that the island will be built sustainably, with features in place to safeguard the island’s ecosystems. The new island will also be the first carbon-neutral private cruise destination in the world and will be audited and certified by an independent, third-party expert to ensure it meets the standards for carbon neutrality.

> NEW JIM HENSON-INSPIRED SHOW ON-BOARD PRINCESS CRUISES Princess Cruises have announced an exclusive show which is inspired by Jim Henson, the legendary puppeteer and creator of TV programmes such as The Muppets and Fraggle Rock. The show, named Inspired Silliness, is performed live and stars puppets from The Jim Henson Company. The reimagined characters sing and dance, bringing to life the comedy, iconic music and puppetry in the Princess Theatre. It will first debut on-board Sky Princess as she sails across the Mediterranean, then on-board Enchanted Princess following her June 2020 launch.

> FIRST EVER GIN DISTILLERY AT SEA TO LAUNCH ON-BOARD IONA Everyone knows that gin has fast-become the UK’s favourite tipple, with variants such as pink gin, parma violet gin and even unicorn gin! So, it’s no surprise that P&O Cruises has introduced a new partnership with the award-winning Salcombe Gin to offer the gin-factor at sea! The partnership means Iona will have the first-ever gin distillery at sea, where gin will be bottled and labelled on-board. Salcombe Gin will also be hosting a series of gin masterclasses on-board Iona, so guests can learn more about the spirit and get the chance to create their own recipe. P&O Cruises are also working with the company to develop limited-edition gins celebrating and taking inspiration from the ports of call.

> VIRGIN VOYAGES REVEALS SECOND SHIP NAME Scarlet Lady has a sister, and she’s named Valiant Lady, Virgin Voyages have revealed. The ship will launch in May 2021 when she will sail out of Barcelona on a selection of seven-night itineraries across the Western Mediterranean. Ports include Monte Carlo, Marseille, Olbia and Ibiza – where the ship will feature Friday overnight stays. Virgin Voyages’ Chief Executive, Tom McAlpin said: “We are thrilled to unveil the name of our second ship, Valiant Lady, and to deliver on our commitment to offer travellers a sea change in how they can experience cruising in this fantastic part of the world.”

WE’VE BEEN ON-BOARD Visiting a ship and exploring the cruise line’s facilities allows us to offer expert advice and maintain our award-winning customer service when you’re booking a cruise. Our close relationships with the cruise lines combined with our first-hand knowledge of the ships ensures you have everything you need at your fingertips for your next sailing.

RE

NORWEGIAN ENCO

Some of us were lucky enough to dine in the Teppanyaki restaurant which usually has an extra charge. The food here was exquisite but most impressive was the show put on by our personal chef. As we gathered around the hot plate, Chef Ernino juggled with knives, told jokes and even had us all singing and clapping along. There is an extra charge for the speciality dining venues, but judging from this one, they are well worth it for a treat. We also spent time on deck 18 where the laser tag arena and Encore Speedway go-kart track are based. The go-karts on Norwegian Encore are real go-karts and they go pretty fast along the track which loops around over two decks. From the viewing area, we watched as they sped past on the 1,100-foot track which extended over the side of the ship.

Visiting a cruise ship is always exciting, but nothing compares to the buzz around the first sailing of a brand-new ship, especially when it’s one as impressive as Norwegian Encore! Eleven members of the Cruise118 team were lucky enough to board this sparkly new Norwegian Cruise Line ship for her two-night inaugural cruise from Bremerhaven, Germany to Southampton. We’d heard lots about this ship before we visited. After all, a cruise ship with the longest go-kart track and the biggest outdoor laser tag arena at sea certainly stands out from the others. However, Norwegian Encore is about so much more than this! Once on-board, we were immediately wowed by the stylish décor and sea views from the huge window – just as much as we were by the new ship smell and the squashy new carpets. We couldn’t wait to explore. We headed up to the Observation Lounge for welcome cocktails and were wowed by the space – encompassing almost half of deck 15, this huge area has 180-degree ocean views through floor to ceiling windows. It’s the perfect place to relax and enjoy a drink while you watch the scenery.

The laser tag arena on Norwegian Encore is massive too. It’s so easy to forget you’re on a ship with activities like these. The course is made up of ancient-looking pillars and statues interwoven with the tail of a giant serpent. There’s also the indoor Galaxy Pavilion – a huge room filled with virtual reality games which our team loved spending time in. We also gained access to The Haven during our time on-board. This is the perfect antidote to the hustle and bustle on this action-packed ship. Exclusive to suite guests, there is an adults-only VIP swimming pool, hot tubs and the Haven Restaurant. We think they would be great for families as the parents could relax here while the children explored the fun on-board. If you’ve ever been worried about being bored on a cruise, choose a ship like this! Whatever the weather, there’s so much to do on-board Norwegian Encore that your only problem will be fitting it all in!

Like all Norwegian Cruise Line ships, Norwegian Encore has a huge choice of restaurants. The ship has six complimentary restaurants, nine speciality restaurants and four more cafes and snack bars. Of course, we couldn’t try them all during our two-night stay, but we did get to try the main dining room, the buffet, the Local Bar & Grill which serves pub food and one of the speciality restaurants.

Offering a bolder way to see the world, Anthem of the Seas is one of Royal Caribbean’s top ships. Sailing from a range of ports, including Southampton, and boasting itineraries to a variety of destinations she’s a great vessel to enjoy your cruise holiday. A group of Cruise118 staff sailed from New York to Southampton on a five-night trip, experiencing all that there is to offer on-board. “Embarkation was flawless stepping aboard Anthem. The shoreside staff were friendly and, though our cabins weren’t ready to check-in to, we were told where we could go to start our holiday sooner. The décor is very contemporary, featuring interactive artwork and plenty of light coming through form the outdoors to make its airy and fresh. Some of us stayed in the virtual cabins on-board, which are an inside stateroom with a false window that shows a live feed from the bridge of the ship. This was really helpful in showing us what the weather was like as well as being a bit of a novelty! Activities on-board were hugely varied, including the signature FlowRider, iFly sky-diving simulator, rock-climbing wall and more. There was so much to do on-board, sometimes it was difficult to keep up with what was happening. However, we did manage to catch the show – Spectra’s Cabaret. This was one of the best shows many of us had ever seen on-board a ship, situated in the purpose-built $27m theatre. For dining and drinks there are many options to try on-board Anthem of the Seas. We spent two nights in Chic, one of the four main dining rooms, where the food was exceptional. For the speciality restaurants we also tried Jamie’s Italian which was an amazing feast of food, and the Chops Grille which is a steak lovers paradise. Service on-board was impeccable, considering there were over 4,000 other people on-board we always felt taken care of. From the cabin stewards to the bar staff, we felt welcomed and at home.”

SKY PRINCESS Two of our Cruise Concierge team were lucky enough to set sail on-board Princess Cruises’ newest addition, Sky Princess. After her launch in October, the two staff members explore her decks while sailing to the ports of Trieste, Kotor and Athens. “Once we had stepped aboard you could see that the ship was beautiful, particularly the atrium which had a spiral staircase and marble floors. There were golden tones dotted throughout the ship’s décor too, which worked really well across the floors. We were also ready to go with our Ocean Medallions, which are personal gadgets designed to give you a more personalised cruise experience. They can be used as key cards and replace the need for cruise cards when you’re ordering drinks or food on-board. It really added to the experience and made for a straight-forward way of life on-board. We made our way to our staterooms where the best feature was the incredibly comfortable beds! These have been designed in partnership with world-renowned sleep expert, Dr. Michael Breus. It was the best nights’ sleep ever as you just sunk into your mattress. After settling in, we made our way out to enjoy the entertainment and activities on offer. There was a fantastic trio of live singers who were performing during the sailaway party and a ‘name that tune’ quiz in the early evening, but the standout option was the premiere of Rock Opera. This is a brand new theatre production for Princess Cruises and offers rock ballads, costumes, choreography and more to enjoy an empowering musical production. As for the food on-board, we sampled plenty of options. We ate in the main dining room for two of the nights and the food was incredible, including Garlic Salmon and Prawns and Pork in a Red Wine Sauce. One morning we got breakfast delivered to our cabin, which is free of charge, and had a fantastic selection. For us, the staff were the highlight of the cruise. Despite this being a brand-new ship, all the waiting staff knew the menus and their recommendations were incredibly thorough. All of our embarkations were smooth, and we felt we definitely experienced great service on-board a premium, fast-growing cruise line that has a lot to offer.”

Fish Pie Recipe:

Classic fish pie with leek and cheddar Serves: 4

M

arco Pierre White is renowned in the food industry, taking the restaurant scene by storm when he became the youngest ever chef to be awarded three Michelin stars in the 1990s. So, it comes as no surprise that P&O Cruises made him a patron of The Cookery Club! Perfect for all lovers of cooking, from whizzes in the kitchen to complete beginners, The Cookery Club serves up a menu of hands-on workshops in a state-ofthe-art kitchen, guided by a talented team of professional chefs. As patron of The Cookery Club, Marco hosts masterclasses and dinners when on-board Britannia and soon-to-launch Iona, offering his priceless expertise to guests. Here’s one of the recipes from his ‘Unmistakeably Marco Class’ – Classic fish pie.

Ingredients 25g flour 30g butter 500ml fish stock 500ml double cream 240g cod fillet, diced 240g salmon, diced 50g smoked haddock, diced 100g peeled Atlantic prawns 4 eggs, boiled for 7.5 minutes and peeled 250g leeks, white part 50g butter 1kg baking potatoes, baked and peeled 4 egg yolks 250g soft butter 100g mild Cheddar cheese Seasoning to taste

Method 1. To make the sauce melt 30g of butter and add the flour. Cook out for 10 mins to a light fawn colour. Gradually add the fish stock whisking all the time to stop lumps forming. Simmer for 20 minutes and finish with 50ml of cream. 2. Add diced fish to sauce and poach for 1 minute, portion and pour into 4 pie dishes. 3. Prepare the leeks by cutting in half down the middle and slicing the white part. 4. Sweat 250g of leeks in 50g of butter until cooked with no colour. Drain and sprinkle over the fish. 5. Quarter the boiled eggs and add one egg to each dish with 25g prawns. 6. Grate the cheese and sprinkle over the fish mixture and leeks. 7. For the potato topping take the baked potatoes, no skin and pass twice through a potato ricer or mash, add 4 egg yolks and the 250g of soft butter and season with salt and pepper. Beat well to mix all the ingredients together. 8. Pipe the potato mixture over each pie and glaze under the grill until golden brown.

Holidays at Sea We work hard to be able to cruise, so getting the most for our money is always important! This starts before you even book a cruise. Take to travel agents, they are never more expensive than going direct and can sometimes get you some little extras. Another tip is to research your port, if you are confident, why not book an independent excursion either yourself or through your travel agent as this could save you a small fortune. If you are on a budget, look out for special offers once onboard. Cruising Isn’t Just For Old People When booking a cruise cabin, consider booking a ‘guaranteed’ cabin. Booking a guaranteed cabin means that you don’t get to pick the location of your cabin but are guaranteed to be assigned at least the grade that you have paid for. This is often a much cheaper option than picking your cabins location and you are more likely to receive an upgrade.

If you are not sailing on a UK cruise line, such as P&O Cruises and Fred. Olsen Cruise Line, and you like a nice cup of tea, then I always recommend bringing your own tea bags with you. US lines will almost always serve tea that tastes a little sub-standard to British palates, so being able to have a good cuppa on a two-week cruise or longer every morning and afternoon, will significantly enhance your holiday experience. As you will be handing over your luggage to pier side porters on embarkation and might not see your belongings for a good few hours, remember to bring a roomy carry-on bag packed with anything you might need on-board. This includes medications and cruise documents for sure, but also items that let you start having fun right away, like your swimming costume. As someone who has worked on cruise ships for over eight years, there are plenty of hacks and secrets which cruise lines don’t always tell you about. One thing is the different shopping sales each day on-board. Wait until the final day of the voyage to make huge savings or when the stores put a special event on to say that everything must go. You’ll be disembarking the ship with plenty of full bag – just take note of the customs allowance first depending on your itinerary! Winter Cruising For those looking to get away to warmer climes and escape the chills of the later months or wanting to spend the festive season somewhere special, there are plenty of destinations to choose from.

Winter Sun Barcelona This is a fantastic cruise destination during the winter months, with temperatures still hitting 15°C. It’s still a pleasant port to explore, even more so as the streets are as empty as the azure blue skies which shine down upon them! It is also the best time to join the city’s festivities, with the festival of Santa Eulàlia taking place on 12th February. This is a huge open-air parade complete with concerts, performances and workshops over several days. Barcelona’s seasonal delicacies also come out of the woodwork during winter, with the most popular being churros – often paired with dipping chocolate.

Madrid Madrid’s Christmas Markets can be greeted in full swing when visiting in the winter months, with most vendors opening their stalls in late November right through to New Year for an enchanting winter experience. However, instead of the blustery, snowy days often found in Germany or Scandinavia, you can experience the festive spirit in the crisp, sunny air of the western Mediterranean. Take a romantic stroll through El Parque del Buen Retiro where the green space is a wonderful place to relax and people watch.

South Pacific Virtually unspoiled by tourism and development, there is no better place to get off-grid and indulge your inner explorer than the islands in the South Pacific. Cruises here will transport you to island paradises that couldn’t be further removed from the melancholy UK weather. Grab a snorkel or join a scuba diving excursion to explore beautiful coral gardens and mysterious shipwrecks; relax on a bright white beach before savouring the freshest local seafood; and hike to sacred jungle statues and volcanic peaks.

United Arab Emirates The United Arab Emirates is a land of stunning contrasts. Futuristic cities sit alongside vast deserts and ornate mosques, and cosmopolitan playgrounds give way to traditional cultures. Visiting during winter means you can miss the bulk of the crowds and still enjoy temperatures of around 20°C, but if you want to avoid peak rainfall, cruise in December and January rather than February. Not that a few showers will dampen the splendour of the Emirati sights. Dubai offers endless glamour and innovation, towering skyscrapers, traditional souks and desert landscapes.

Bali Made up of around 17,000 islands – of which only 8,000 are inhabited – Indonesia will captivate absolutely every kind of traveller. A premier destination for many cruisers on the run from the UK winter, explore the island’s cultural centre – Ubud – and enjoy traditional crafts, dancing and captivating cuisines for all who visit. For those who really want to get away from city life, the jungle is also never far away.

Christmas and New Year New York, U.S.A. Spread your festive cheer in the Big Apple, where this city certainly tops the Christmas holiday destination list. With its famous Rockefeller Center Christmas tree, this destination features in many festive films and seasonal songs, and rightfully so. From the brilliant window displays of Fifth Avenue to the illuminating delights of the Brooklyn neighbourhood, Dyker Heights, New York is a destination that will light-up anyone’s Christmas celebrations. Enjoy a world-class performance of ‘The Nutcracker’ by The New York City Ballet or go ice skating in Central Park to really immerse yourself in the festivities.

Hamburg, Germany Experience authentic German Christmas markets in the city of Hamburg, where decorated wooden stalls and beautiful bright lights appear around the centre, making it a welcoming and wonderful winter destination. The markets usually open mid-November, with some running as late as New Year’s Eve. The main market is Weihnachtsmarkt, right in front of the city hall and one of the most popular markets in Germany.

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Brazil is a destination that knows how to party and makes for an unforgettable way to spend the New Year. Join crowds as they gather on Copacabana Beach as you enjoy music from Brazilian DJs as well as a stunning view of jaw-dropping fireworks. Most people wear white to the festivities as it is thought to bring peace and prosperity for the year ahead.

Funchal, Madeira Having hosted fireworks display that was officially recognised as the world’s largest display, Madeira is definitely worth consideration for your New Year’s Eve. The magnificent display is further enhanced with thousands of lamps and lights which decorate the amphitheatre of Funchal, as well as its streets, transforming it into a twinkling stage.

Sydney, Australia Another bucket-list addition, Sydney offers a New Year’s Eve experience like no other. Enjoy aerial displays, Aboriginal dancing, light parades and the iconic fireworks as they light up Sydney Harbour Bridge. The evening begins with tugboats blasting water as they sail beneath the bridge, followed by an aerial display as flying aces wow the crowds. Later in the evening, the Harbour of Light Parade takes place, illuminating the Sydney Harbour with dazzling colours and unique choreography – then it’s all culminated in the iconic fireworks display across the harbour.

Interview WITH

With all the exciting news about new ships, private islands and staterooms, we thought it was the perfect time to speak to Martin MacKinnon from Royal Caribbean, and discuss what the future holds for this fantastic cruise line. From private islands to brand-new ships, there is plenty of exciting news with Royal Caribbean at the moment! Which are you most looking forward to? There’s so much exciting news from Royal Caribbean and a lot for our guests and travel agents to look forward to! Next year, we’ll be welcoming Anthem of the Seas back to the UK for the first time since 2015. Allure of the Seas will also become our European flagship in 2020, when she sails from Barcelona following a $165 million makeover that will see much more added to her exciting line up of adrenaline-inducing features. The Royal Amplification has seen ten ships ‘amplified’ in four years. What made you decide what to introduce and which ships to invest in? Royal Caribbean has an unwavering passion for innovation and a commitment to always exceeding our guests’ expectations, and the Royal Amplified programme is just one of the ways in which we are staying ahead of the curve. We’ve spent time analysing years of guest satisfaction ratings, venue utilisation data and crew interviews as part of the ambitious Royal Amplified programme so that we can focus the major investment on introducing innovative features and bold, new experiences to our current ships that wow our loyal guests while also attracting the next generation of adventurers. What is one thing everyone should experience when cruising with Royal Caribbean?

Almost everyone has heard of the incredible Caribbean private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay! What is your must-do for cruisers on the island? Where to start! Thrill Waterpark is an absolute must on the island; it has 13 waterslides, including the tallest waterslide in North America and the Caribbean’s largest wave pool, so it’s a great place for all the family. Then there’s Oasis Lagoon, the largest freshwater pool in the Caribbean with three distinct coves, a swim-up bar and underwater sound system. And, of course, the beautiful beaches where guests can enjoy a spot of sunbathing or go paddle boarding. There’s so much to do which allows guests can create their own ideal ‘perfect day’ on the island. Why did you choose the South Pacific for your next private island, Perfect Day at Lelepu, and will we be seeing more added to the collection? Lelepa is an incredibly beautiful area of natural beauty and our guests who travel to the South Pacific are seeking authentic adventures and genuine relaxation, which makes it the perfect location for our next Perfect Day island.

with dodgems, roller-skating, circus school and more. As with any new Royal Caribbean ship, there will also be new features to wow and impress our guests, and I can’t wait to see what else the ship has in store when she sets sail in November. Looking further ahead, 2022 is the year Royal Caribbean’s new Icon class will be launched. What can you tell us about this brand-new class of ship? The Icon class ships have been designed to leverage the latest, environmentally-friendly applications to boost energy efficiencies, and will embody the distinctly unique ship design guests expect from Royal Caribbean. Testament to the brand’s confidence in the innovative design and energy-efficient technology, a third ship has been ordered, before the first ship has even launched. What makes Royal Caribbean stand-out from the crowd? We’re a proven leader when it comes to blowing the socks off what’s possible on a cruise ship and this is because we seek the best of the best, whether that be entertainment, tech, hospitality or cuisine. For example, where else can you take in the beautiful Alaska scenery from 300 feet in the air in a glass capsule or skydive while in the middle of the ocean?

Perfect Day at Lelepa will be created in partnership with the community of Vanuatu and will showcase the distinct ecological beauty and diverse local culture of the island nation. The island will also be built with sustainability features designed to safeguard the island’s ecosystems and will be the first carbon neutral private cruise destination in the world. Given the huge success of Perfect Day at CocoCay and the feedback we’ve had from guests, we want to give guests more of what they love and want, so watch this space for announcements about future ‘Perfect Day’ islands! Odyssey of the Seas is a brand-new ship to look forward to for 2020! Can you tell us a bit more about this exciting new addition?

There’s something for everyone on a Royal Caribbean ship, no matter whether you’re Odyssey of the Seas will be the second Quantumyoung or young-at-heart; after a chill holiday Ultra class ship to join the fleet and will feature or a thrill holiday. So, while I’d recommend the much-loved Quantum-class favourites such trying out the adrenaline-inducing features as North Star, such as the FlowRider RipCord by or Ultimate Abyss, T H E R E ’ S S O M U C H TO D O W H I C H iFLY skydiving my daughter would A L LOW S G U E S T S C A N C R E AT E simulator, and probably recommend T H E I R OW N I D E A L ‘ P E R F E C T D A Y ’ SeaPlex, the Splashaway Bay Aqua ON THE ISLAND largest indoor Park! activity space

“The only way to sum up my time on CocoCay is perfect. It was clean, the Wi-Fi worked on shore, all my drinks package was included as per the ship, there are loads of options for food and the water park was incredible! As an adrenaline junkie, I didn’t expect the water park to be as good as the hype, but it was better than I could of imagined!”

“Perfect Day at CocoCay is without a doubt the best cruise port I’ve visited. It’s a real paradise island which has to be seen to be believed. From the moment you step off the ship and are greeted by Bahamian dancers, to the free airbrush tattoo souvenirs you can get when you leave, CocoCay has the wow factor at every turn. If you want a really special experience, you can opt to ride the tallest water slide in North America, zoom down the 1,600-foot zip line or take a ride in a helium balloon for the best views of the Bahamas. We loved Perfect Day at CocoCay and definitely plan to return.”

EXPLORE WITH EXCURSIONS Exploring destinations and visiting new ports of call are part of what can make a cruise unforgettable. Whether it’s the first time you’ve visited a particular destination, or the twenty-first, a shore excursion is one of the best ways to spend your time off the ship and ensure you experience the very best for each port.

Celebrity Cruises’ shore excursions connect you with the world in ways you’ve never imagined. With experiences tailored to a range of appetites and interests, as well as categories split by private, premium or family-focused, you can pick from a great selection of shore excursions suited to you.

Royal Caribbean are passionate about connecting spectacular moments with special memories, and one of the ways in which they do this is through their extensive collection of shore excursions. Led by expert guides and crafted by destination experts, each one offers a sense of adventure and exploration for everyone to enjoy.

Just one of these collections is Ben Fogle’s Great Adventures, curated by the world-famous adventurer. His series of excursions capture his travel style and allow you to follow his footsteps and get out of your comfort zone, whether that’s white water rafting in the Slovenian wilderness or hiking the Putangirua Pinnacles in New Zealand.

The excursions feature themes including culinary, culture, active and family. One which stood out to us was the Caring Discoveries. Featuring activities which help support wildlife, the environment, or communities, these excursions include hands-on tours whose proceeds benefit local initiatives. From tree-planting in Jamaica; hand-feeding kangaroos at an Australian sanctuary or volunteering your time at a homeless shelter in San Juan – it’s the perfect opportunity to make a difference to the destinations you visit.

Our Pick: Grand Mosque By Night (4 hours) Experience the Sheik Zayed Grand Mosque under the Arabian stars, followed by a traditional Emirati dinner at the stunning five-star Emirates Palace Hotel.

Our Pick: Bonaire National Marine Park Coral Restoration Dive (5 hours) Learn about the work behind the Coral Restoration Foundation, seeing how the project is preserving and restoring the local reefs, before scuba diving in the Marine Park and assisting in collecting data and cleaning coral while surrounded by the beautiful underwater worlds.

EXCURSION EXPERIENCE Our very own Managing Director, Alison Earnshaw, recently experienced a few excursions with Celebrity Edge on a recent Mediterranean cruise. In Palma de Mallorca she embarked on a hike along the historic 15th century Royal Path to Banyalbufar, before parasailing over the landscapes. She also explored Barcelona from above on a helicopter tour, taking in the local sights from a unique perspective. “Abseiling was not something I ever thought I’d do! I’ll admit to being a little wary at first, but it was exhilarating when you got the hang of it! The helicopter flights over Barcelona was a great way to see the city in a different way. It was a new experience for me, having never flown in a helicopter before, the short flight took in all the Barcelona sights with the and Sagrada Familia really standing out.”

P&O Cruises believe that your excursion should be brimming with exciting possibilities, from iconic sights to compelling local cultures. Each excursion is divided by activity levels which makes it easy to choose how to get the best out of your time in port. The cruise line has recently partnered with global tour operator, Urban Adventures, to bring a whole collection of experiences that get beneath the skin of your destinations. Discovering what makes your ports of call unique is part of the fun and these hosted shore excursions take all the fuss out of planning. From sampling street food while gazing at the street art to cycling around town on your way to a beer tasting, each experience is varied and unforgettable. The tours themselves range from a few hours to a full-day tour, with each including a guide revealing secrets of the destinations to groups of no more than 12 people. Our Pick: Copenhagen Hygge and Happiness (3.5 hours) Visit city sites that emulate the Danish cosy of hygge and get a better understanding of the country’s culture and how it contributes to the region topping the world happiness tables.

With shore excursions ranging from categories such as Discovery Tours™, Local Connections, Bon Appétit and Animal Planet, Princess Cruises offer one of the most varied collections of award-winning excursions. Recognised for providing exceptional service and outstanding travel experiences, you can look forward to enriching tours no matter which you pick. Enjoy learning of the heritage of ports of call with local guides, be inspired by artists and see the destinations through a new perspective or raise a glass to appreciate regional drinks and sip your way through the stories that shape craft breweries or distilleries. Going Green There are many initiatives and innovations in place across the cruising industry that are working towards protecting the oceans and reducing pollution. As more and more new ships launch and cruising tourism grows, its more important than ever to focus on how to adapt and change our sailing ways for a better, brighter future.

Sail & Sustain Program With a history of 52 years in cruising innovation, Norwegian Cruise Line is at the forefront of sustainable steps towards helping the environment. The recent Sail & Sustain Environmental Program shows the line’s commitment to minimise waste the landfills, reduce its CO2 emissions rate and more. As part of the program, Norwegian Cruise Line has partnered with JUST® Goods, Inc. to provide 100% spring water in a plant-based carton over single-use plastic bottles. The cruise line estimate that this will replace over six million single-use plastic bottles each year.

Turtles, private islands and natural power Royal Caribbean’s 2020 environmental goals were set in partnership with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), setting ambitious and measurable targets to support ocean conservation. A recent breakthrough announced that the partnership had revealed a new test to ultimately end the illegal trade of the hawksbill turtle trade, a species which is currently listed as critically endangered. The cruise line currently has two ships scheduled for delivery in 2022 and 2024 which will be powered by liquified natural gas (LNG), known as the world’s cleanest fossil fuel. It has also announced a second private island – Perfect Day at Lelepu – which will be the first carbon-neutral private cruise destination in the world.

Protecting our oceans Already making tremendous progress reducing emissions, fuel consumption and more, P&O Cruises are committed to doing more and improving faster with their plans. Single-use plastics have already been replaced on-board, including items such as straws, cotton buds and stirrers, same for single serve sachets, which are replaced with refillable dispensers or serving dishes. P&O Cruises are also behind the Operation Oceans Alive campaign, which looks at protecting the marine environment. Just one of the ways this works is investing in Reverse Osmosis plants on-board ships which enables them to create their own water, reducing the need to load water from shore supplies. When the LNG-powered Iona launches in 2020 she will be P&O Cruises’ most energy-efficient ship, allowing the cruise line to move forward with supporting the environment.

Energy-efficient From the 1st January 2020, MSC Cruises will become the first global cruise line to operate at a carbon neutral level. All of the cruise line’s CO2 emissions will be offset in the new year through the use of high-grade carbon offsets. The news comes just after the latest ship – MSC Grandiosa – joined the fleet in November as MSC Cruises’ most environmentally-advanced cruise yet. Another new ship for the cruise line, MSC Europa, will also boast high environmental standards. IT will be the first of five LNG-powered ships that will come into service between 2022 and 2027. Together these ships represent the progress MSC Cruises are making in reducing the fleet’s environmental footprint.

The cruise industry has made unprecedented progress in implementing sustainable technologies and practices over recent years. CLIA cruise lines are already leading the shipping sector in making a first-ever industry-wide emissions commitment to reduce the rate of carbon emissions across the industry fleet by 40% by 2030. Furthermore, CLIA cruise lines have invested more than $22 billion in ships with new, energy-efficient technologies and cleaner fuels. The entire shipping industry benefits from early adoption of these innovative technologies by cruise lines—many of which did not exist five to 10 years ago, such as exhaust gas cleaning systems (EGCS), liquified natural gas (LNG) as fuel and shore-side power capabilities. In addition, 100% of new cruise ships on order are specified to have advanced wastewater treatment systems, which generate effluent discharges often equivalent to shoreside treatment plants and, consistent with CLIA policy, are well beyond international requirements.

Meiji Shrine

Shibuya Crossing

A shrine dedicated to the deified spirits of Emperor Meiji and his consort, Empress Shoken, this is a great way to start exploring Tokyo’s history and heritage. The shrine sits in a large forested area so it’s a peaceful place to enjoy an early morning walk within the busy city.

You can either walk to Shibuya (20-minute walk) or take the train from Harajuku Station to Shibuya Station (7-minute journey). Once you reach here, head to your next stop – the Shibuya Crossing. A famous road crossing it may be, but it’s a great sight to watch hundreds of people crossing the street at once and capturing a snap of Tokyo’s typical hustle and bustle.

10am - 11am Takeshita Dori A symbol of Harajuku, Takeshita Dori (Takeshita Street) is the birthplace of many of Japan’s popular fashions and trends. A narrow street stretching almost 400m and lined with shops, boutiques, cafes and fast food outlets, it’s a popular place to visit for both tourists and locals.

Cruising to Japan strikes up images of cherry blossoms, temples and futuristic cityscapes, many of which epitomise its capital city, Tokyo. Home to a metropolis of historical cultures and unique cuisines, Tokyo is fast-becoming a popular cruising destination for lines such as for lines such as Royal Caribbean, Princess Cruises and more. Now, since hosting the 2019 Rugby World Cup and presenting the 2020 Summer Olympics, its only going to grow in its popularity. Whether you’re sailing to see its many gardens and green spaces or to enjoy the eclectic and ultramodern hub, Tokyo is a place of awe-inspiring landscapes and wonderment.

11:30am - 12am Hachikõ Memorial Just a short walk down Shrine Street takes you to the memorial of Japan’s most legendary canine. Hachiko was a Japanese Akita who is known for his remarkable loyalty to his owner, waiting outside the Shibuya Station every day for him even after his owner passed away. Remembered to this day as a symbol of loyalty and faith, the famous dog is now immortalised as a bronze statue outside the station.

1pm - 5pm

5pm - 7pm

Mori Tower,

Numazuko Ginza

Museum & Gardens With 54 storeys of shopping, dining and art options, Mori Tower is a great place to explore during your afternoon. Start at the Mori Art Museum. Situated on the tower’s top floors, the space offers exhibitions and art to gaze upon with everchanging installations which are interactive and immersive. Next, head to the Observation Deck for a chance to catch some incredible views of the surroundings. At 238m tall, the tower is the perfect place to visit for views of Tokyo.

12am - 1pm Gyukatsu Motomura This popular restaurant gets busy very quickly, so we recommended opting for an early lunch to sample what is a relatively new Japanese delicacy – steak katsu. More often served with pork or chicken, it’s one of the only places you can try this dish. Queues can often stretch to up to an hour, but it’s worth the wait!

As you exit, head to the Mori Garden for a relaxing tour of the small oasis found between the tall buildings. Built to represent a traditional Japanese landscape, the garden has several cherry trees which make a treat to walk around during the blossom season (MarchApril).

A conveyor-belt restaurant offering the usual sushi finds, Numazuko Ginza is perfect for both sushi aficionados and firsttimers. As one of the first revolving sushi restaurants in the Ginza area, it serves dishes such as nama uni and seared anago alongside rice and fresh sea urchin. Many of its ingredients are locally sourced too, so it’s all fresh. We recommend getting a counter seat, so you get a great view of the dishes moving along the belt.

7pm + Yurakucho Restaurant District For the remainder of the evening, we suggest heading to Yarakucho’s lively restaurant and bar district. Offering a melting-pot of dining and drinking opportunities, the district is built up beneath the elevated train tracks of the Yamanote Line, making it a really unique collection of venues. Restaurants range from authentic izakaya and yakitori joints to elegant French wine bars, and it’s held traditional Tokyo vibes perfectly.

After dining, head down to the Ebisu Station (15-minute walk) and get the train to the Roppongi Station, which is only a 6-minute journey.
