Bodrum Bodrum, Turkey Essential Collection - Bodrum City Tour Includes the Castle, Myndos Gate, Mausoleuma, Antique Theatre.
Highlights: • Bodrum Castle • Museum of Underwater Archaeology • Mausoleum • Windmills • Myndos Gate • Antique Theatre Duration: 4 hours
Adults: £34pp Bodrum Castle.
Children: £34pp
Bodrum City is steeped in history: in ancient times it was called Halicarnassus of Caria and was famous for housing the Mausoleum of Mausolus, one of the Seven Ancient Wonders of the World. This popular half-day tour is ideal for cruise visitors who wish to see the main sights of Bodrum within a limited time. Our tour will include visits to the following: Bodrum Castle: Built from 1402 by the Knights of St John as the Castle of St. Peter, it sits high on a rocky peninsula on the site of the original Carian settlement. The castle, set in the harbour with five imposing towers - one of which, the imposing, 15th-Century Snake Tower, contains a secret museum - and seven gates, is home to the biggest museum of its kind devoted to underwater archaeology. Museum of Underwater Archaeology: In 1962 the Turkish Government established this museum for the underwater discoveries of ancient shipwrecks in the Aegean Sea. In addition to these - including the Bronze Age Uluburun shipwreck, the oldest in the world - you’ll get to see the Carian Princess Hall, which evokes the last days of the ancient greatness of Halicarnassus and the Glass Hall, which displays glass objects hailing from between 1400 BC and 1100 AD. There’s also a collection of amphoras - used in ancient times for transporting and storing olive oil and wine - as well as a hall featuring a large collection of ancient coins and jewellery. Mausoleum: The excavated remains of the tomb built by Artemisia as a tribute to her husband and brother, King Mausolos, who died in 355 BC. Its construction was also so beautiful and unique it became one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Only fragments of it remain but it is still worth a visit with its beautiful gardens and landscape. Windmills: The windmills of the Bodrum peninsula are made of stone and lined with wooden planks, and were used by local people from the 18th Century until the 1970s. Seven of the windmills are on a hilltop vista which delivers a wonderful view of Bodrum Bay on one side, and Gümbet Bay on the other - a perfect place to relax and take photographs. Myndos Gate: Originally part of the town’s wall, this is the only surviving gate of the two entrances of ancient Halicarnassus, which formed part of the town’s seven-kilometre wall. Myndos Gate was built by King Mausolus in the 4th Century BC. Antique Theatre: Also dating back to the 4th Century BC, the Ancient Theatre of Halicarnassus had a capacity of 5,000. The tour will be followed by some free time for shopping, eating or simply relaxing in your beautiful surroundings before the drive back to the port of Bodrum. Bodrum Amphitheatre.
