JANUARY RiverVoyages.com gets a makeover
Putting the fun in fundraising
Our specialist river cruise website RiverVoyages.com has received a marvellous makeover, making the site easier to navigate, more informative and allowing you even better access to an array of amazing river cruise deals.
World Travel Holdings has always been passionate about fundraising for a good cause, and this year’s charity work has been more poignant than ever, with the tragic loss of our much-loved colleague and friend Lisa Parkisson.
After a lot of hard work from our web design and content team, the new RiverVoyages.com website is up and running, not only providing you with the latest exclusive deals, incentives and reduced prices from a host of the finest river cruise lines, but also offering a wealth of practical knowledge, destination guides and more, so our customers can access the best the information before they decide upon their perfect river cruise line and itinerary. So if you’re considering an exciting and elegant river cruise for your next holiday, head over to the new-look RiverVoyages.com today, browse through our best offers and find your perfect river cruise.
In an effort to raise funds to help secure the future of Lisa’s baby son Zac, WTH UK has organised a number of successful charity events throughout the latter half of 2014, including a summer party at which all proceeds from the evening were donated straight into a trust fund for Zac. In addition to this, the company also recently organised an 11-a-side charity football match against local side Coppull United FC, which saw a team made up of WTH UK’s employees go head to head with the lower league side over 90 minutes. Despite a valiant effort from WTH UK, Coppull won 9 – 3, and over £900 was raised in the process.

THE BAHAMAS
Barcelona is a hub of fascinating culture and heritage, offering a diverse mix of sightseeing opportunities, shopping districts and dining experiences.
The Bahamas offers beautiful stretches of white sandy coastline, clear glistening ocean waters and even a collection of historic landmarks including forts and monuments.
You could head to La Sagrada Familia to appreciate Gaudi’s historic unfinished cathedral, take a tour of Barcelona FC’s world-famous Nou Camp stadium or stroll along Las Ramblas and shop for authentic souvenirs at a plethora of traditional market stalls – there’s simply so much to discover across the city.
Relaxing on the beach is easily one of the most popular pastimes for visitors to this idyllic destination, but these islands offer much more than this. Adventurous cruisers could opt for a dolphin – or even a shark – encounter off the islands' gorgeous shores.
ATHENS
ST LUCIA
The ideal destination for budding historians, cruisers can make the short journey to the ancient city of Athens from the port of Piraeus. This historic metropolis is steeped is thousands of years of fascinating heritage, the remnants of which can still be observed.
St Lucia is one of the Caribbean’s most naturally beautiful and verdant destinations, well-known for its vast areas of thick jungle and towering Piton Mountains.
Everyone has their favourite corner of the world, and it’s safe to say that the Mediterranean and the Caribbean are amongst the most popular – but which one do you prefer? Read on to see our comparison of the world’s two most sought-after cruise destinations.
MEDITERRANEAN For the ultimate blend of sun-soaked beaches, vibrant culture and remarkable history, the Mediterranean ticks every box. Encompassing the coastlines of many countries across southern Europe, the Med cannot be experienced entirely in one voyage, which is why travellers return to the region again and again and always discover something new. There truly is something for everyone across the Mediterranean, from the picture perfect beaches along the Spanish coastline and the glamorous destinations on the French Riviera, to bustling and iconic cities such as Rome, Venice, Athens, Barcelona and Dubrovnik. Each is speckled with ancient landmarks which stand as testament to the region's long and illustrious heritage. CARIBBEAN The Caribbean is the perfect place for lovers of the laidback lifestyle, where beachside relaxation is always on the agenda and sunshine is never in short supply. Every Caribbean island in this stunning region boasts its own unique charm and character, from the 365 pristine beaches of Antigua and the spectacular shorelines of Barbados, to the lush mountainous scenery of St Lucia and the lively towns and cities of Puerto Rico.
Some of Athens' most iconic sights include the ancient Acropolis and the Temple of Olympian Zeus, while the city’s modern side is also worth exploring for a range of excellent shopping and dining experiences.
In the Caribbean, you can enjoy your days however you please, whether you’re the type of traveller who likes to delve into local culture and immerse yourself in your unique surroundings, or simply spend a day lying on the golden sandy beaches for which this captivating archipelago is perhaps best known.
The Mediterranean and the Caribbean both have their own unique appeal and in order to assess which destination is superior, you must take into account the tastes and preferences of the individual traveller.
Many cruisers flock to the Caribbean each year for good reason. This collection of tiny islands has captured the hearts and minds of many a traveller, drawing them back year after year.

How you spend your time on St Lucia is up to you. You could unwind on the beach, enjoy a scenic rainforest trek, hike to the impressive Sulphur Springs or even climb Gros Piton – an achievable goal for those with a can-do attitude and a head for heights!
OUR VERDICT
If you are looking for a diverse cruise and an itinerary packed with contrasting experiences across a combination of ancient cities, quaint ports and cosmopolitan metropolises, then a Mediterranean cruise is for you. You could be relaxing on a beach one day and uncovering ancient archaeological ruins the next, before arriving in
a modern city, sampling local cuisine and strolling though a bustling shopping district – it’s all possible in the Med. A Caribbean cruise however, is ideal for travellers seeking a sun-soaked island escape and looking to surround themselves in picturesque tropical scenery. If your idea of heaven is lying back on a soft sandy beach, sipping a cocktail and dipping your toes in warm ocean waters, the Caribbean is perfectly suited. But it’s not all about the beaches and there is plenty of history, culture and adventure to uncover for those with the motivation to find it.

Havana, Cuba
The colourful Caribbean has long been one of the world’s most popular cruise destinations, famous for its abundance of sun, sea and sand – but this spectacular region is not just about the beaches. Ok, for many people it is mainly about the beaches... but there’s also another exciting and intriguing side to the Caribbean away from the white sandy shorelines that are often the main focus of a holiday to this beautiful collection of tropical idylls. While the shimmering Caribbean Sea and stretches of pristine coastline are something that all destinations in the archipelago have in common, those who venture further inland on their island-hopping adventure will discover that each isle, from Bermuda to Barbados, has its own distinctive character. Simply relaxing on the beach all day may be enough excitement for some Caribbean cruisers, but for those who want a little more from their getaway, there’s plenty out there to enjoy. The Caribbean boasts a rich colonial heritage and various islands have been occupied by a plethora of nations over the centuries, including England, France, Spain and the Netherlands. This diverse history is what gives each location its own unique ambience and distinctive architecture can be observed on almost every island across the region, from the ancient forts of Cuba and Trinidad to the colourful buildings that line the streets of downtown Willemstad on the island of Curacao.

Puerto Rico Puerto Rico is a vibrant and diverse destination, with plenty of possibilities to suit every type of traveller. the CARIBBEAN EMERGING PORTS
Although the majority of Caribbean destinations are familiar to most avid cruisers, there are a number of lesser-known and often underappreciated islands to uncover across the archipelago.
Curacao Located in the southern Caribbean Sea, not far from the shores of Venezuela, Curacao is a gorgeous island which enjoys a warm tropical climate - and is widely considered to be outside of the Caribbean’s hurricane zone and therefore adverse weather conditions are much less likely. Due to Curacao’s rich Dutch heritage, you’ll find streets lined with colourful pastel shaded buildings in the nation’s capital of Willemstad. A collection of historic colonial forts are also situated across the island, alongside a number of verdant national parks and museums. Beaches are another attraction of course, and many stretches of immaculate coastline can found along the island’s southern shores.

This flat tropical island is best known for its warm climate and wonderful dive spots, and is therefore a firm favourite amongst scuba divers. Further inland, Bonaire’s salt flats create an impressive landscape and local wildlife here includes flamingos and wild iguanas, so why not take a tour of the island to see the its native fauna for yourself?

Guadeloupe
Sometimes known as the Butterfly Island due to its unique shape, this peaceful Eastern Caribbean destination is perfect for travellers looking for a Caribbean experience away from the major tourist resorts. You’ll arrive in the scenic port of Terre-de-Haut, from which you can head out to explore Guadeloupe to your heart’s content. Dramatic waterfalls, clear blue oceans filled with tropical fish and a lively local atmosphere are just some of the wonderful features that attract visitors to this tiny idyll. Also, be sure to try some of the island’s delicious food and drink, which includes locally-made white rum.
Although the island of Cozumel is actually part of Mexico, it is located off the country’s eastern coast in the Caribbean Sea and therefore often included on Caribbean cruise itineraries. Beautiful beaches and a warm blue sea characterise this tropical paradise, so as you might expect, watersports and coastal pursuits are a major part of life on the island. You could take a scuba diving trip with a qualified instructor, go snorkelling and observe the colourful underwater wonderland or enjoy a host of other coastal activities. Alternatively, you could simply lie on the beach, top up your tan and unwind in the warm Caribbean sun – the choice is yours.
SilverLeaf guests will benefit from glass-domed coaches with oversized windows, complimentary non-alcoholic drinks and snacks, beer or wine served at lunch and a selection of entrees for breakfast and lunch.

Many Caribbean and American cruises will dock in or embark from the ports of Miami or Fort Lauderdale in Florida and these destinations are both great places for families to explore. The real family fun however, can be found with a pre- or postcruise stay in Orlando. This corner of the Sunshine State is home to a selection of the world’s greatest theme parks, including the four parks of Disney World as well as Universal Studios. Family holidays don’t get much more exciting than this!

Family Diary FANTASTIC VALUE AND FACILITIES YOU WON’T EXPECT
We asked our Head of Marketing Kate Holroyd to record a diary of her time aboard the Norwegian Epic on a Barcelona round-trip in the Western Mediterranean. Here’s what she experienced on-board...
DAY 1 - Smooth boarding There wasn’t too much time to check out Barcelona as we jumped in a taxi from the airport to the port, it was very cheap and so easy even with all the family luggage! We hadn’t got out of the taxi and the porter took our bags – so relieved we kept our swimming gear with us, Abigail loved cooling off in the pool!
...............................................................................................................................................
DAY 2 - Day at sea. Splashtastic! We spent the day enjoying all that the ship had to offer, Abigail has joined Splash Academy and has her week planned out already! We hit the gym followed by lunch as a family at The Garden Café. For a buffet the food is delicious and has superb options for all of us. Joined the Captain for drinks tonight and Abigail insisted on having a selfie for her friends at home! Cruise ID: 37736

After a day in Naples, visiting Pompeii and taking a tour of the coast, we arrived back at the ship, freshened up and headed up to the pool deck for the sail away party. Abigail and I twirled in the evening sun to the live Cuban band – something I will never forget. We twirled, her blonde curls fanning out as much as her dress and as wide as her smile.

DAY 4 - Rome in a day My favourite port of call (so far!), thunder, lightning and torrential rain just added to the drama of the Colosseum, a short walk to the Piazza Navona where we stopped for lunch and I had the most amazing Truffelata! Our 'Rome on your own' excursion was fantastic, I loved wandering through the city at our own pace, seeing the mesmerising Pantheon and finishing our tour at the Vatican. Abigail needed an early night, so we escaped the noise, lights and chatter, and chilled on the balcony to the most fantastic sunset.

Family Diary DAY 5 - Date night We made an early dart to Pisa, walked around the famous landmarks, took photos with the obligatory poses holding up and pushing over the leaning tower. Abigail loved the market stalls around the squares, souvenir shopping was fun! She was so excited for the Princess Parade at kids’ club, and Ant and I enjoyed a meal at Cagney’s, great food, amazing service and the company was okay too!
• Smaller sized cruise ships accessible to more ports of call
.....................................................................................................................
DAY 6 - Feeling blue
• A more traditional and leisurely style cruising experience
Although the ship tendered in Cannes, we stayed aboard and enjoyed an empty ship! It was nice to relax for the day after a hectic few days in port. We messed about in the pool, in the arcade and Abigail spent some more time at Splash Academy. Before we knew it, we were grabbing an early dinner before heading to the theatre to watch Blue Man Group. The show was superb, Abigail was mesmerised and she won’t stop giggling at what happened!
• The currency is sterling on board Magellan, Marco Polo and Azores
...........................................................................................................................
DAY 7 - So many memories... Another chilled day, with a morning at sea and an afternoon on-board the ship. Abigail went to kid’s club for one last time, when we picked her up she hugged all her new friends goodbye, her face glowing. Dinner tonight was Cirque de Dreams and Dinner, a 3-course meal with dinner entertainment, a spectacle I’ll never forget. After a late-night stroll across the pool deck, we headed to bed – what an amazing holiday it’s been.

What is your personal favourite cruise destination in the world?
It has to be Alaska, where you can kayak around the icebergs with some of the most spectacular scenery anywhere on Earth all around you.
Are there any destinations that Royal Caribbean’s ships currently don’t travel to that you’d like to see featured on future itineraries? During our six months travelling we spent some time on the Atlantic Coast of Morocco. Tell us about the experience of launching and naming your first ship.
I have nothing but respect for our new build team. I boarded Quantum of the Seas three days before our first guests and witnessed the last 36 hours of flat out operations to get the ship ready. This is our first new ship in almost five years and we have four more coming in the next three years, but Royal has never lost the ability to surprise and delight on these occasions. The naming combined the future in Two70 (including an appearance from our Roboscreens) and the traditional elements of the piper. We even had North Star setting the bottle on its way as we named Quantum. It’s all great training for Anthem of the Seas when we name her in April 2015 in Southampton.

I’ve just returned from the naming ceremony for Quantum of the Seas in New York. We sailed up the Hudson River early evening and as we reached the Statue of Liberty I was fortunate enough to be at the top of our observation capsule North Star, with Liberty to the right and Manhattan to the left. One of those memorable moments that will stay with me forever.

Selected CANARIES & NORTH AFRICA
What’s your most memorable cruising experience?
I sailed a few months back on Allure of the Seas and met Travis, the brains behind our Izumi Japanese Restaurant concept. He took to the hot plate and served the type of food you would only expect to find on a Park Lane restaurant. I’m also looking forward to taking my family to Jamie’s Italian on Anthem of the Seas. It has everything you would expect from a Jamie’s Italian, and the delight of an outside terrace where the view changes in every port.
We’ve all been amazed by the Quantum Class ships. What innovations can we expect from Royal in the future?
At Royal Caribbean we have always pushed the boundaries. Some of this comes from customer feedback and some from our visionary leaders. Our Chairman Richard Fain often quotes Henry Ford when he said: “Had I asked customers what they wanted they would have said a faster horse”. We are the true maverick innovators in the field with the most exciting, innovative and environmentally friendly ships. As for what comes next . . . watch this space!

Oceania to introduce new ship Sirena to fleet in 2016 Oceania Cruises has revealed plans to introduce a new ship named Sirena into its premium luxury fleet in 2016. Joining the line from Princess Cruises, Sirena will undergo a 35 day $40 million refurbishment in France to convert her for Oceania Cruises. Itineraries will be revealed in late February 2015, reservations will open from March 2015 and sailings commence in April 2016. Oceania Cruises commented: “The addition of Sirena demonstrates Oceania Cruises’ unwavering commitment to mid-size ships and destination orientated cruising. With Sirena, Oceania Cruises will expand the number and diversity of destination-rich itineraries offered, appealing to both seasoned world travellers and passionate cruisers.”

How do youCRUISE?
EXPLORE IN PORT Extended stays
There are two sides to a luxury cruise– the amazing and immersive experiences in port as well as the opulent and indulgent time spent on-board. So how do YOU cruise? For many avid cruisers, the on-board experience is one of most important parts of their cruise holiday – more so in some cases than their time spent in port. On a luxury cruise, you can expect nothing but the very best in personalised service, gourmet dining and beautiful accommodation – all guaranteed to delight the most discerning of cruisers.
Intrepid travellers, however, may be more inclined to choose a cruise with more time spent in the destinations on their itinerary, discovering and exploring new ports and embarking on a host of exciting shore excursions. Some luxury cruise lines focus in on time spent ashore, catering to guests with a taste for adventure.
Whichever camp you fall into, a luxury cruise offers an uniquely special type of getaway, creating memories that will last for a lifetime. So take a look at some of the incredible experiences you can expect on a six-star voyage, and no matter how you like to cruise, be inspired to find your next luxury escape at sea.
SAVOUR YOUR SHIP Gourmet Dining
More time in port allows for a more in-depth exploration of your favourite destinations, offering you the chance to spend longer soaking up local culture and making the most of sightseeing opportunities.
Guides & speakers Many six-star cruise lines will often invite expert lecturers and local destination guides onboard to offer a fascinating insight into each port on your itinerary.
Crystal Cruises is renowned for its exceptional gourmet dining experiences, with master chef Nobu Matsuhisa establishing the exclusive Silk Road restaurant on-board the line’s ships.
Spa indulgence
Entertainment
Oceania Cruises boasts the world-renowned Canyon Ranch SpaClub on-board, at which guests can indulge in treatments ranging from massages and body wraps to acupuncture and spiritual healing.
You can enjoy entertainment however you like on a luxury cruise. Whether you'd like see a show-stopping performance at your ship's on-board theatre, or try to strike it lucky at the casino - it's up to you.
OUR VIEW...
Immersive shore excursions Azamara Club Cruises offers a range of truly immersive shoreside experiences in destinations across the globe, including Insider Access, Nights and Cool Places and the line’s incredible AzAmazing Evenings.
Whether you’re hoping for a soothing cruise filled with on-board relaxation, or you have a true wanderlust and spirit for discovery, a luxury cruise can offer the best of both worlds. You could be unwinding with a private massage and time spent in the Jacuzzi one day, before heading out on an exhilarating jungle trek the next. The beauty of a six-star voyage is it’s completely up to you how you spend your time. NORTHERN ADVENTURE LONDON TO REYKJAVIK Silver Wind | 5 August 2016 | 12 nights
The small fishing village of Portofino is a world away from the busy Italian cities of Rome and Venice, offering a taste of life in the slow lane. As a relatively small destination, you can do most of your exploring on foot, although simply lying back on the beach or relaxing with a drink may be your main priority here. If you do choose to explore the village, you’ll find a number of intriguing landmarks, including the 16th century Castello Brown and the ornate church of St Martin.
Messina is located on Sicily’s northern coastline, just five kilometres from mainland Italy across the Straits of Messina. Local attractions include the nearby picturesque medieval town of Novara di Sicilia as well as Torre Faro – a 224 metre tall tower offering spectacular panoramic views across the region – as long you tackle over 1,000 steps to get up and back down again. Also, make sure to try some local pizza, which is said to be some of the best in Italy with it authentic Sicilian flavour!

PALERMO
RAVENNA
POSITANO
Palermo is the enchanting capital of the Italian island of Sicily. The city is home to an abundance of historic landmarks, which stand as testament to the region's long and fascinating heritage and offer an insight into its diverse past.
Ravenna is an emerging cruise destination on Italy’s beautiful Adriatic coast. Although it is home to a collection of stunning ancient architecture, including basilicas and mausoleums, the city still manages to retain an intimate ambience and small town character.
Situated on Italy’s sublime Amalfi Coast, the small idyllic town of Positano not only offers a look at the local Italian culture, but also boasts inspiring coastal views, guaranteed to live long in the memory.
Palermo’s natural beauty is also particularly appealing, especially along the coast, while the authentic Italian cuisine available in eateries across the city is also a major attraction for foodies.
From the many cafes, bars and shops scattered across Ravenna’s quaint old town, to the wonderful scenery along the shoreline, the city is a joy to explore, exuding charm around every corner with plenty to discover.
While Positano harbour is the perfect place to spend a day soaking up the town’s wonderful ambience, the old church of Collegiata di Santa Maria Assunta is one of region’s most iconic landmarks and features incredibly impressive architecture and elegant design.

The river cruise industry is continuing to grow and expand as the demand for river cruises soars. This exciting way to holiday has become one of the travel industry’s fastest-growing markets – so why are more and more people choosing to river cruise? RHINE
DANUBE
• 776 miles long, running from the Swiss Alps to the North Sea • Flows through six nations – Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria, Germany, France and the Netherlands • The Rhine marks the border between France and Germany, Germany and Switzerland as well as Switzerland and Austria. • Along the stretch of the Rhine between Koblenz and Bingen, there are more castles than in any other of the world’s river valleys
• At 1,777 miles long, the Danube is the longest European river outside of Russia • It passes through a total of 10 different nations and four capital cities – Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest and Belgrade • The verdant Danube Delta is home to around 5,000 species of plants, birds and animals • About 10 million people across Europe get their drinking water from the Danube
Our advice..
Both the Rhine and the Danube have their own unique charm and choosing between them for your next river cruise will be a tough decision. Both of these majestic rivers offers a wealth of fabulous European cultural experiences and while the Rhine flows through many nations across Western and Central Europe, the Danube stretches further east towards Romania, Serbia and Slovakia.
If you are hoping for a historic journey to visit ancient landmarks, stroll through quaint villages and satisfy your palate for claret on a
trip to a local vineyard then a Rhine cruise would be ideal. If you’re perfect river cruise involves spending time in iconic and bustling cities as well as observing beautiful wildlife across stunning wetlands, choose a Danube river cruise. At RiverVoyages.com we can turn your river cruise dreams into realities and tailor-make your ideal voyage along either of these famous waterways. So why not give us a call and experience the beauty of the Rhine or Danube for yourself?

OPINION A mixed age group of adults makes for a more interesting experience. An example of this was a repositioning cruise that Charlie and I took, from Rome to Fort Lauderdale. Each day started with a well-attended Zumba session. Book club discussions benefited from diverse and informed views from people of different ages and cultural backgrounds. The daily pub quiz undoubtedly benefited from the cross generational musical knowledge. My own limited musical knowledge ends with Sergeant Pepper and picks up again with Michael Buble, but, should we ever meet on a cruise pub team you should know that I am a whizz with Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals. The dinner time conversation was more rounded, with lively chat leading to debate and at many times amusement and laughter.
THE GOLDEN AGE of cruising?
I am on my high horse now and might need a hand dismounting. What is it with pigeon-holing people in relation to age? I know that there are cruise lines that do a tremendous job supporting passengers with disabilities but people of all ages have disabilities. Why have these forward thinking cruise lines become labelled as being more for older people? In my previous life I worked with young people with disabilities and impairments and chaired a national disability charity so as you would expect, I want to be able to have the choice to cruise with young or relatively young people of any age, physical condition or cultural background.
by Cath Cole & Jacob Trengove Are cruise lines targeting the right age groups? Regular cruiser Rose Williams shares her thoughts on how cruises are marketed to different generations.
Idyllic scenes fill your television screen; a ship glides on still water through a beautiful moonlit night or passes a romantic castle set high on a hill. Lush, sweeping music fills the air, wine glasses chink and a couple look lovingly into each other’s eyes. Is this the latest who done it, or a gripping drama? Is it thump, it’s a television advert sponsored by a cruise company but, dear reader; my guess is that you had already spotted that.
The age of people taking cruise holidays is something I have been puzzling over for some time. Of course there are always exceptions to general rules but why does the age of cruise passengers differ from one continent to another? Like many of you, I have boarded cruise ships in the United States of America and Australia and been in the company of a younger cruise clientele. Does this age difference impact on your cruise? In my opinion it does. Don’t get me wrong I’m not suggesting that the Ibiza clubbers shift their allegiance to life aboard ship or that families with children abandon seaside holidays. I’ve said before that Charlie and I adore our grandchildren but well… I am sure you know what I am getting at.
Come on cruise companies, let’s see a shift in your marketing policies. Look at the world around you. Flip through glossy magazines and look at adverts for luxury watches, high end luggage and designer clothes. Read articles about fashion weeks, sporting events and look at the associated photographs. What do you see? The answer is pictures of apparently affluent younger people splashing their cash. I am not talking about the likes of David and Victoria Beckham and the super-rich but people with much more modest incomes. I am a firm believer that cruising is by far the best way to relax, travel and see the world at any age. I enjoy meeting a wide range of people from all walks of life. Why is it that when I go on a cruise, particularly one sailing from Europe, in the main I travel with passengers who qualify for a bus pass?
What do you think about the marketing focus of cruise companies? Join the conversation on our Facebook and Twitter pages. Or if you've got a topic you'd like to write about, or some feedback that you'd like us to pass to Rose, just email editor@worldtravelholdings.co.uk
A question if I may: what, do you suppose is the age of the couple? Late twenties, thirty-five; let’s say late forties. No, they are too young to be the marketing target for cruise companies with large marketing budgets.
72
Perhaps cruise companies market to the post 55 age group because they see us as having the money to spend on cruises. Before I go any further I should declare that I am 66 and Charlie is approaching 71, so I am taking the liberty of stretching the proverbial “us” for literary effect. Is it a misnomer to presume that it is predominantly retired people that have cash to spare? Some undoubtedly do, but for others cruising is a luxury that they choose to stretch their budget for.

What
TO WEAR
QUESTIONS
Cruise holidays are often associated with the sunny climes of the Mediterranean or Caribbean, where shorts, t-shirts, flip-flops and sunglasses are usually the outfit of choice. There are however, many cruises where this attire is far from appropriate, including adventurous cruises to Antarctica or scenic voyages across Northern Europe. Read on to see what we would recommend you pack for an intrepid sailing to the world’s most breathtaking – but often chilly – destinations.
Norwegian Fjords
Antarctica
Although the scenery across the fjords of Norway is nothing short of spectacular and you will no doubt be astonished by the region’s breathtaking valleys, cliffs and inland waterways, the Norwegian weather is not quite so inspiring.
This stunning continent may be amongst the world’s most naturally beautiful and home to an abundance of wonderful wildlife, but you should never underestimate the climate here, as adverse weather conditions are part and parcel of the Antarctic cruise experience. Some cruise lines, however, may even provide snow boots and arctic jackets for you aboard your ship, so make sure to check with them before you pack too much.
Make sure to pack a weather-proof winter coat and trousers suitable for inland exploration, alongside some more formal and casual wear for time spent aboard your ship. Most importantly however, remember your walking boots. You will need them as you head out into the fjords on foot, where the terrain can be particularly uneven for those who want to reach the most beautiful and secluded areas. With the appropriate attire, you are sure to create fond and lasting memories of your time in the Norwegian Fjords.
Heavy duty and warm clothes are essential during a cruise to Antarctica. Make sure you have access to an extra thick coat, plenty of thermal underwater and a pair of comfortable but protective snow boots. If in doubt, just remember our handy Antarctic motto when you come to pack – layers, layers and more layers.
Cruise holidays offer an exciting way to travel the world but people often have lots of questions about the experience. Our Cruise Concierge team is always on-hand to answer any of your cruise concerns but in the meantime, take a look below to see some of the questions that have already been submitted. Can I go on a cruise holiday on my own?
Can you use cash only on a cruise ship?
Yes, many cruise lines offer deals and itineraries for solo cruisers. Singles cruises offer a fantastic way to travel the world, meet like-minded people and set sail on your own terms. Some cruise lines however, may charge single supplements to cover the cost of giving a double room to one person, so make sure to shop around for singles cruises to find the best deal.
Absolutely. You will need to leave a cash deposit when you check in but once that deposit runs out, you will be asked to come to reception and will be advised that your limit has been reached. All monies not used will be returned upon check-out and the amount payable as a deposit differs with each cruise line.
Are cruise ships wheelchair accessible?
What is the luggage allowance on a cruise? Do I have to carry it on-board myself?
The majority of cruise lines offer a range of wheelchair accessible cabins and facilities, especially aboard newer and more recently refurbished ships. For example, Royal Caribbean’s Quantum Class ships feature over 30 accessible suites and staterooms with wider doors, roll-in showers, grab bars and turning spaces. But remember, it’s always best to check with your Concierge before you book.
There is no limit on your luggage allowance when you embark on a cruise holiday, so you can bring as much as you can carry on-board. All cruise lines, no matter what time of year, what duration or where you are sailing from, will take your main luggage on-board for you. You will also have your own hand luggage which you may take on yourself.
Are all restaurants included on a full board cruise? Not all restaurants are included in a full board cruise because, as there are often a number of outstanding speciality restaurants on-board, a lot of people will of course want to experience them. Speciality restaurants offer exceptionally high quality cuisine and many do require a surcharge which will be made payable to you if you wish to dine.
We have an amazing selection of cruises to Antarctica, the Norwegian Fjords and a host of other spectacular destinations available at both Cruise118.com and SixStarCruises.co.uk

Do cruise lines allow you to bring your own alcohol on-board? It depends entirely on the individual cruise line’s policy. Some cruise lines will allow you to bring a limited amount of your own alcohol on-board, while others do not look upon the practice as favourably. You will find that many excellent drinks packages are available on-board, so you can save more money at the bar. If you have your mind set on bringing your own tipple on-board however, always check you cruise line’s policy beforehand.

COCKTAILS As you read through your Cruise Concierge magazine for inspiration I wanted to share a recipe with you that can soothe, calm and sustain you whilst chasing away those winter chills. It’s also a lovely thing to make for someone else if they are not feeling their best.
For many of us the New Year can be a hectic and stressful time. The nights are long, the temperature is falling and the tinkle of sleigh bells has been replaced with thoughts of the coming year. There are January sales shopping trips to plan, or the internet to navigate to ensure all of those important purchases are made, and then there is the dreaded head cold or flu that will surely knock us for six when we least expect it. It is also at this time of year that many of us are planning that next cruise holiday and trying to choose our favourite destinations. While you take time to decide upon your next cruise, here’s a recipe for one my favourite cocktails – the Hot Toddy – a delicious tipple that’s guaranteed to warm you up on those cold winter evenings. The origins of the Hot Toddy are uncertain but it is widely believed that it derives from a ‘toddy’ drink made in India from the sap of palm leaves and is thought to have been adapted and brought back to Scotland by an employee of the East India Trading Company. With this in mind I prefer to use Scotch whisky in my Hot Toddy. I hope you enjoy your creating your own Hot Toddy and may I take this opportunity to wish you all the very best for the coming year.
Hot Toddy
• Using a mug or some other heat resistant vessel, pour in a good measure of spirit (50ml). • Whisky, Bourbon, Rum and Cognac all work well. • To sweeten, now add granulated sugar, Demerara, honey, and maple syrup or golden syrup. • Add a little orange peel, lemon peel, lemon juice, a touch of ginger, a pinch of all spice, a little ground cinnamon or a cinnamon stick and a couple of whole cloves (play around with the ingredients, leave out what you don’t like or make use of what is in the cupboard). • Now fill up with hot previously boiled water and stir to ensure that your sweetener has dissolved into the drink. • Sip away as you decide on your next cruise destination. Grace and Mary Melvyn Bragg
This elegant novel evokes for the reader a glorious sense of time and place across three generations. John, who lives in our modern hurry up world, shares with the reader the tyranny of living at the opposite end of the country from Mary, his much loved mother. During his visits to his mother in her nursing home John attempts to hold her with him as her memory is eclipsed by dementia. John revisits and reprises the life stories of Mary and Grace, her mother. Grace and Mary is a celebration of the enduring love of parent and child. Without trace of sentimentality it touches the heart and proves that ordinary lives are extraordinary.

Good Omens Terry Pratchett & Neil Gaiman
This novel is the result of a collaboration between two of the UK’s best comedy/ fantasy authors. Their unique styles come together to tell a hilarious but thought-provoking story. As the coming of the apocalypse approaches, the angel Aziraphale and the demon Crowley, having grown comfortable in the human world, do everything in their power to prevent it. The novel also follows the coming of age of the antichrist as he realizes his place in the war between Heaven and Hell. Pratchett and Gaiman use the contrast between a contemporary setting and biblical prophecy to brilliant comedic effect. Any fans of Pratchett’s Discworld series or Gaimain’s The Graveyard Book should definitely take a look.

Island
Jane Rogers Island follows the story of Nikki Black, an unstable young woman who travels to a remote Scottish Island to exact revenge on her estranged mother. Her plan doesn’t go as smoothly as she’d like however due to the presence of an as yet unknown brother, Calum. His obsession and dependence on their mother, along with his young mental age, make Nikki’s mission more complicated than she would like. Readers of Shakespeare will recognise the parallels between Island and The Tempest with similarities between characters and setting found throughout the book. If you’re looking for high drama and psychological depth, Island is ideal.
