What’s new with

WTH

Awards success is CLIA for WTH

4

CLIA, or the Cruise Lines International Association, is the official trade organisation of the cruising industry which brings cruise lines and travel agents together and is dedicated to the expansion of both ocean and river cruising – which is of course good news for both you and ourselves.

channels and strong, dedicated management team. In further CLIArelated success, one of the company’s expert Cruise Concierge, SixStarCruises.co.uk’s Katy Porter, was presented with the Young Travel Agent of the Year award (read more on Katy’s award success on page 50).

CLIA’s Cruise Industry Awards are naturally one of the most respected in the industry, which is why it was even more special for WTH that it was presented with the prestigious Travel Agent Business of the Year award at the organisation’s annual dinner held in December last year. It was the second time in four years that WTH won the award and the company was praised for its great growth across multiple brands, successful use of multi-media

It is not only CLIA which has seen fit to recognise WTH, as one of the leading luxury cruise lines, Seabourn, also honoured the company by presenting it with its Northern Travel Partner 2014 award. In addition, the line also honoured SixStarCruises.co.uk Cruise Concierge Emma Taylor with its Seabourn Star Homeworker Award in recognition of her excellent sales record.

Vote WTH WTH certainly caught election fever in the run-up to one of the most interesting UK elections for decades. Amid weeks of punditry, promises, speculation, manifestos and more, SixStarCruises.co.uk got in on the act with their own election campaign. SixStarCruises.co.uk’s The Vote campaign was a multi-media operation worthy of a leading political party, with videos, emails and blogs pitting the world’s top luxury lines and cruise destinations against each other, inviting the public to vote for their favourite in the run up to the highly anticipated general election. When the results were in, a tightly-fought contest was won by Azamara Club Cruises.

New online magazine In addition to Cruise Concierge magazine in print, WTH UK is to launch a new online magazine, with the purpose of delivering the latest cruise news, enlightening destination guides and information about a wide range of cruise lines, deals and itineraries straight to you through its website. The online magazine will be your one-stop shop for all things cruise-related and will be regularly updated with all the content that we know you’ll be interested in. So take a look sometime soon, learn something new and start planning your next cruise getaway.

WTH gets its running shoes on As we reported last issue, WTH is passionate about fundraising for a good cause and has certainly got things off to a good start this year, with involvement in one of the country’s most prestigious charity events. WTH UK Managing Director James Cole took to the streets on April 26 when he completed the country’s most famous road race, the London Marathon in aid of Sail4Cancer, a cancer respite charity with a sporting focus, which WTH has so far raised more than £30,000 for in total through numerous charity events. Before the race, James, who ran the marathon in memory of his friend and former Cruise118.com Chairman John Bloodworth, said: “Why am I doing a marathon? Part of the answer is that I hate running! Bizarre as it may seem, I wanted to see if I could set out and achieve something outside of my comfort zone. What’s more, I get to raise some cash for a fantastic cause”.

SECRETS to booking last minute TIPS THE CRUISE LINES WON’T TELL YOU

Be flexible If you’re the type of person who thrives on spontaneity and loves to live in the moment, then booking a last-minute cruise holiday can let you secure a great deal and get away from it all sooner rather than later. Lastminute deals generally depart between a few days and three months after booking, and more often than not are available at a fantastic price, so if you’re the type of person who’s happy to set sail on a whim and can’t pass up on an amazing offer, then sailing last minute could be the perfect option for you. Before you decide to book however, take a look at some of these helpful tips and discover the best ways take advantage of last-minute deals, so you can set sail for less as soon as possible.

10

Booking late on a last-minute cruise getaway means you’ll have last pick when it comes to potential itineraries and accommodations – albeit for a better price – so it is important to be flexible. Slightly less spacious accommodation or an itinerary calling at a port you’ve seen before might be the price you pay for a much cheaper cruise fare, but remember, you’ll most likely still have an incredible holiday wherever you go, and the knowledge that you secured your place on-board for less will surely outweigh any compromises you may have made.

To book call 0800 072 3117

Be ready to act fast Last-minute deals by their very nature will only be available for a short amount of time, so be ready to act fast and book your place on-board if you don’t want to miss out. Booking late is a great way to get a fantastic price, but don’t make the mistake of thinking no one else has the same idea. The cruise lines will be looking to fill up their cruise ship quickly as the departure date approaches, which means prices can drop quickly, but if you wait too long you might miss out on the perfect last-minute voyage.

Santorini, Greece

Travel off-peak Cruises sailing during a region’s peak season are always more popular with travellers, so you’re more likely to find a last-minute deal on an off-peak voyage, as cruise lines try to fill every suite and stateroom on-board. Travelling off-peak may mean less chance to make the most of the ports on your itinerary – perhaps due to adverse weather conditions – but you could still enjoy an unforgettable holiday for much less, with plenty of time to make the most of your feature-packed ship. And who knows – maybe you’ll get lucky with the weather!

Speak to the experts If you’re still unsure about booking a last-minute cruise holiday for whatever reason, don’t hesitate to speak to the experts at Cruise118.com. Our experienced and dedicated Cruise Concierge team can offer a wealth of insider knowledge, help you find an incredible deal on a last-minute sailing and guide you through every stage of your booking, from your first enquiry until you return home and beyond.

We discover the best ports in the world

Mediterranean

EAST v WEST The Mediterranean is one of the world’s most popular cruise destinations with something to suit every type of cruiser. Read on to see East and West go head to head and find out which side of this classic cruise region is best suited for you.

Ephesus, Turkey

12

Rome, Italy

Why EASTERN MEDITERRANEAN

Why WESTERN MEDITERRANEAN

One of the things which makes the Mediterranean so popular is the prospect of some sun a little closer to home and if the chance to soak up some serious rays is what you want out of your holiday, then an Eastern Mediterranean cruise is the perfect choice. Think idyllic Greek Island beaches and dreamy white-washed buildings and you’ll soon get the idea.

For many, a Western Mediterranean cruise is the go-to first choice and probably the perfect option for first-time cruisers too. Though not as balmy as in the east, the weather is pretty consistent and you’ll no doubt have plenty of opportunity to top up the tan. Remember, this region is home to both Spain and the French Riviera and for many, the destinations here wrote the book when it comes to beach escapes.

Of course, it’s not all about the weather and an Eastern Mediterranean cruise is also the ideal option if you like to explore culture and history. The legacy of the ancient Greeks is all around in this region, whether you encounter it one some of the region’s most beautiful islands or the ancient Greek capital itself, Athens. Just like those pioneering Greeks, on an East Mediterranean cruise you’ll also have the opportunity to visit Turkish shores, with the ancient Greek city of Ephesus within easy reach from Izmir and the country’s colourful capital Istanbul offering a heady blend of both east and west.

World-famous ports can be found across the Western Mediterranean and it’s this chance to explore some of Europe’s most celebrated cities which keeps people returning to this diverse region. Italy is a fascinating nation and how much of it you explore depends on your itinerary, but with legendary attractions like Rome’s Colosseum, the Leaning Tower of Pisa and Venice’s Grand Canal all within reach, you’re guaranteed to tick some must-sees off your bucket list. Spain’s cultural colossus Barcelona is another mainstay, offering both beautiful beaches and a wealth of splendid Gaudi works, while the ports across southern France also often feature.

ISTANBUL

This beautiful Greek island sums up everything that’s great about an East Mediterranean cruise. Its distinctive black volcanic beaches have a sandy allure all of their own and are the perfect place to enjoy your time in the sun. Take a trip up from sea level however and you’ll be able to see for yourself both the distinctive architecture of the island’s villages and some of the finest ocean views too.

Always a popular choice, Turkey’s ancient capital is a cruiser’s gateway to the wider east, a melting pot of cultures where Mediterranean and Middle Eastern lifestyles meet. It’s one of the warmest places you’re likely to visit on your cruise but welcome and inspiring respite can be taken with a tour of the awesome Blue Mosque. Don’t miss the bazaars for the bargain hunt of a lifetime.

Monte Carlo, Monaco

VENICE

MONTE CARLO

The City on the Water is a natural starting point for many Western Mediterranean itineraries and the view of Venice from your ship is a one-of-a-kind cruise experience. The city’s famous canal network is an attraction in itself and is the best way to explore the winding streets and such landmarks as St Mark’s Cathedral and the Doge’s Palace. Of course, a gondola ride’s a must too.

When it comes to summing up the glitzy Cote d’Azur lifestyle, the words Monte Carlo always come to mind. This playground of the rich and famous features on a good number of West Mediterranean itineraries and is home to one of the world’s most famous casinos, a happening square and one of the most expensive collections of yachts you’re ever likely to see, moored in the famous harbour.

FOOD FOCUS Greek Islands vs French Riviera

Greece in the east and France in the west are responsible for two famous but very different types of cuisine. Here’s a look at some of the best dishes you can enjoy in each region.

GREEK ISLANDS

FRENCH RIVIERA

Moussaka

Tapenade

Normally made using fresh aubergines, sweetly-flavoured lamb, tomato passata and cinnamon, this Greek classic is layered in much the same way as shepherd’s pie or lasagne.

At first glance, this side dish looks distinctly Italian with its black olives, capers, garlic, anchovies and olive oil but make no mistake, Tapenade is the very essence of the Cote d’Azur.

Baklava

Ratatouille

Baklava is an eternal favourite of the Greek islands, flaky phyllo dough layered with delicious cinnamon-spiced nut filling, then doused in syrup. You can order it almost anywhere in Greece.

Now forever associated with the Disney film of the same name, this Provence favourite is actually a casserole, made using distinctly Mediterranean vegetables like aubergines, tomatoes and peppers.

Dolmathakia Containing rice, pine nuts, and fresh herbs and made using the ancient practice of wrapping food in fresh grape leaves, Dolmathakia is a classic Greek appetiser, often flavoured with lemons, dill and mint.

Bouillabaisse Marseille’s signature dish, this is heaven if you’re a seafood fan, as the rule is that a minimum of four types of fish must be used, along with the croutons, tomatoes, onions, garlic and saffron.

Koulouri

Nougat

Circular bread topped with sesame seeds, this delicious morning treat is sold on street corners all over Greece. Be sure to try Koulouri with Feta cheese, chocolate and stuffed olives.

And to finish, something sweet. We’ve all heard of nougat but the south of France truly is the place to try this tasty mix of honey, almonds and egg whites in its most traditional form.

Our verdict

EAST v WEST Well, it’s definitely a tough one. Both the Eastern and Western Mediterranean have their own appeal and if you’re going to be choosing one, you need to look at what you most want out of your cruise. The Eastern Mediterranean is the perfect destination for sun-worshippers, especially those who like to seek out a secluded sandy corner or two, away from the crowds. It’s also the ideal choice if exploring ancient history in-depth is your thing when on holiday, as there is always an excellent choice of excursions available to a wealth of incredible ancient Greek sites. Ideal if you’ve cruised the Mediterranean before and you’re seeking out new experiences.

French Riviera Istanbul, Turkey

The Western Mediterranean is certainly for you if you enjoy a little of everything, but especially love to explore a city and see its most famous landmarks – and there are certainly plenty of incredible cities to choose from in the region. As well as taking in historic landmarks, there are some excellent opportunities for retail therapy across the Western Mediterranean’s fantastic ports and cities. Ideal if you’ve never cruised before and you’re looking for a classic Mediterranean experience. Still can’t decide? Well, you could always cheat a little and seek out a longer itinerary which offers a little of both East and West. Whatever you choose to do and wherever in the Mediterranean you decide to explore, you’re guaranteed a cruise you’ll never forget.

We discover the best cities in the world

EASTERN MEDITERRANEAN EMERGING PORTS If you’re an avid cruiser, you are sure to have heard of many of the most visited ports across the Mediterranean and no doubt visited quite a few of them too. However there are a great many more ports which are less frequented but offer a wealth of attractions to both experienced and new cruisers alike. Here’s a look at two from both the Eastern and Western Mediterranean.

Chania, Crete

SPLIT

CHANIA

It may be Croatia’s second-largest city but when it comes to East Mediterranean itineraries, most cruisers are more likely to have visited Dubrovnik than this exciting and diverse city with its rich and varied heritage. Split is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with good reason, home to the incredible former palace of the Roman Emperor Diocletian, the beautiful Cathedral of St Dominus and the fantastic Ivan Mestrovic Gallery. If you’d never describe yourself as a culture vulture or history buff, then you’d perhaps prefer to head for one of Split’s beautiful and secluded cove beaches or the stunning leafy escape of Krka National Park.

Cruiser or not, you can’t fail to have heard of Crete as a holiday destination. Nevertheless, this port on the sun-drenched island remains one of the East Mediterranean’s best-kept secrets as far as cruise itineraries go. It’s got a little of everything that the region is famous for and is very good at each too. Excellent traditional Greek cuisine, quaint town streets oozing charm, idyllic beaches and plenty of ancient history all await visitors to this stunning Greek escape. For nature lovers, the beautiful biosphere that is the Samaria Gorge is within reach, while budding sommeliers will be pleased to know that there’s a good choice of winery tours on offer.

WESTERN MEDITERRANEAN EMERGING PORTS

TOULON

AVILES

You’ve heard of Cannes, you’ve heard of St Tropez but perhaps not Toulon, which acts as many a cruiser’s gateway to France’s glamorous Cote d’Azur region. Like many ports it has a rich maritime heritage, but visit Toulon and you’ll be able to explore one of France’s most rewarding destinations, from the charming old town harbour to the fascinating Naval Museum. Rade de Toulon is a bay boasting incredible sea views, while Liberty Place is the town’s cultural heart and where you’ll find some of its most splendid architecture. A particular high point in the old town is the beautiful Sainte-Marie-Majeure Cathedral, which dates back as far as the 11th century.

Located close to Spain’s Northern Coast, Aviles boasts a quaint old town, with plenty of laid-back appeal, a world away from the hustle and bustle of its more popular Spanish cruise cousin, Barcelona. Stroll the boulevards from one plaza to the next, soak up the atmosphere and architecture of the old town and perhaps enjoy one of Aviles’ three beautiful parks. Some of the key landmarks which are not to be missed as you explore the city include the Teatro Armando Palacio Valdes and the twin-spired Church of St Thomas of Canterbury – perhaps better known to visitors from Great Britain as Thomas Beckett.

Cruise Ship

VISIT DIARY Whether it’s a ship visit, an overnight stay on-board or a taster cruise, at World Travel Holdings we know that the best way to keep you all informed about cruises, cruise ships and life at sea is to make sure that we send our staff on-board as many ships as we can. Here’s a look at our year so far and also at what’s in store for the rest.

MARCH March was a massive month for the cruising world, as we were getting prepared for the launch of P&O’s incredible new ship Britannia. No fewer than 16 of us were on-board on 10th March for an overnight stay – not just members of our Cruise Concierge team but marketing and management staff too – which gave us plenty of time to explore, take lots of pictures and also indulge in a little celebrity spotting! Two of our Cruise Concierge enjoyed a little extra, with two nights on-board the ship on 11th March after the rest of us had left. March wasn’t just about the biggest ocean ships though, as it was also the month in which some of our staff sailed on river cruise ships. March saw us experience life on the river AmaWaterways style, while on 25th March our Cruise Concierge enjoyed four nights on-board a Scenic river cruise ship.

APRIL Proving that the year so far included more than one brand new mega-ship, April was all about Royal Caribbean’s Anthem of the Seas, when on 18th April, eight of us spent two nights on-board this incredible ground-breaking ship, trying our hands (and everything else) at such amazing features as the iFly skydiving simulator, North Star viewing platform and of course, the first dodgems at sea. We also had four of our staff on-board the sleek and stylish Celebrity Constellation on 22th April for 5 nights and another four on-board for a seven night cruise departing on 27th April. We also kept up with the river cruising experience in April, when two Cruise Concierge got a taste for the Avalon Waterways experience, with a seven night voyage.

MAY Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines helped us to get May off to a busy start, when seven members of our Cruise Concierge and customer services team embarked on a three night cruise, while 21st May saw an unprecedented 80 members of staff descend on Southampton! Why? Well, the date was the start of the three day CLIA Conference and if you’ve read our WTH news section, you’ll already know that this is the Cruise Line Industry Association, which holds its annual conference in many a cruise ship’s spiritual home. We decided to have our conference there too and took the opportunity to visit not one ship but three – namely Britannia, Anthem of the Seas and Royal Princess.

Looking AHEAD. . .

It doesn’t stop there, of course, and we’ll be continuing our visits and cruises throughout the year. Summer is a very busy time for all the cruise lines, but that’s not stopped us sending two of our staff on Holland America Line’s MS Eurodam on 5th July, while looking ahead to early autumn, September sees two of our Cruise Concierge team and two of our Customer Experience team experiencing an overnight on-board a Cruise and Maritime ship.

Looking ahead to

2016

As we head toward the middle of 2015, we can start looking ahead to an exciting year in the world of cruising in 2016; a year which will see the launch of a number incredible new ships from some of the industry’s most innovative and popular cruise lines. Take a look at some of the exciting new vessels due to set sail in 2016.

Harmony and Ovation of the Seas For Royal Caribbean International, 2016 will see the launch of two ground-breaking new ships – Harmony of the Seas, which will be joining the Oasis Class, and Ovation of the Seas, the line’s next Quantum Class vessel. Harmony of the Seas, which is set to launch in April 2016, will be a new generation Oasis Class ship. This class of vessels are currently the largest cruise ships in the world and Harmony of the Seas will be no different. She will feature the seven distinct neighbourhoods for which Oasis Class is renowned, alongside an amazing collection of experiences, amenities and activities at sea. Guests can slip and slide down the ship’s three multi-story waterslides, all of which twist and turn over Central Park ten decks below. Ovation of the Seas, meanwhile, will join Royal Caribbean’s Quantum Class and boast such innovative features as dancing Roboscreens in the unique Two70 entertainment venue; robotic bartenders in Bionic Bar; RipCord by iFLY, the first skydiving experience at sea; and the North Star, an engineering marvel that transports guests over 300 feet above the ocean. What’s more, Ovation will also feature transformative venues such as Sea-Plex, the largest indoor sports and entertainment complex at sea with bumper cars, roller skating and more; alongside the cruise line’s largest and most advanced staterooms ever, including the groundbreaking Virtual Balcony staterooms.

Family Diary Our Sales Director Ryan Johnstone recently took his family on a Caribbean cruise on-board Royal Princess, so here’s his diary of a holiday to remember.

Day 1 to 3 – Orlando fun We flew with Virgin Atlantic direct to Orlando where we stayed for three days prior to our cruise. We had breakfast with the Disney Princesses at the Grand Floridian Resort in Disney World – a fantastic experience in a beautiful location. Maisie loved having pictures taken with her favourite Disney characters! Next was a trip to Universal Studios, where we experienced the new Harry Potter Land. A great start to our holiday!

Day 4 – All aboard

After breakfast in an American diner, we made the leisurely drive to Fort Lauderdale to begin our check-in, which was a breeze. Maisie didn’t quite believe we were on a ship, she was convinced we had checked in to a hotel. She was a majestic ship and beautifully designed, but Maisie wasn’t interested in any of that and wanted to find the children’s club and more importantly, the swimming pools.

Day 5 – Princess Cays

The Princess-owned island was our first port of call, but conditions were such that the tender was deemed unsafe so the captain decided to cancel the stop. Maisie was very disappointed as she was convinced that the island was the home to numerous princesses. We decided to make the most of our full day at sea. Princess arranged numerous additional events to offset the disappointment of the missed port and a good day was had by all.

Day 6 – Day at sea Gill’s Birthday today, so our steward had kindly decorated our cabin door with posters and balloons. Maisie and I brought cards and presents, so we enjoyed a birthday breakfast on the balcony. Maisie wanted to visit the children’s club, so we spent the day at the fantastic sanctuary. It was the first formal night, so we smartened up and enjoyed a stunning meal of lobster and possibly the finest chocolate dessert ever.

Day 7 – St Thomas, US Virgin Islands Land ahoy! After three days of sailing, land was a welcome sight and our first port of call was St Thomas on the US Virgin Islands. Maisie was desperate to get to the beach so we booked a Princess excursion to Magens Bay. We even made friends with a pelican who decided to spend the day with us! Back on the ship, we decided to take in the evening show – David Cats the Italian illusionist – who offered a magical end to a magical day.

Family Diary Day 8 – Dominica No trips planned today as many of the excursions were focused on the rugged terrain of this rainforest immersed island, so we spent the day enjoying the ship’s facilities. The pool was very quiet so we played with Maisie for hours. I visited the gym for a couple of hours too. What a wonderful experience running on a treadmill on a ship, the mountains in front of you and the Caribbean Sea surrounding you. We enjoyed another evening show and had an early night ready for another adventure.

Day 9 – Grenada Grenada is a beautiful island with great history, so we took an excursion with a little bit of everything. We were keen for Maisie to visit the island’s forts as she is infatuated with pirates, so it was great to introduce her to some fun history with real cannon balls. The view of the ocean from Fort Frederick was stunning and we ended our trip at the beach. The evening consisted of pirate games for Maisie and a lovely meal in the Italian restaurant Alfredos for Gill and I.

Day 10 – Bonaire Breakfast on the balcony this morning, after which we visited the sports deck, as Maisie and Gill wanted to play table football. Bonaire was a new destination for us and we had no idea what to expect, but we were not disappointed. A stunning little town with lots of Dutch influence greeted us only five minutes’ walk from the ship. That evening we enjoyed Movies Under the Stars. What a great experience – popcorn and drinks served to your lounger while you enjoyed a great movie!

Day 11 – Aruba Our last port day and the last chance for Maisie to enjoy the beach. We decided to go to Aruba’s famous Palm Beach and had a great time, hiring a float, swimming in the sea and playing volley ball. Returning to the ship, we had an ice crème sundae in the fantastic Gelato Bar, then prepared ourselves for the evening, when we enjoyed an American/Mexican themed buffet with every dish you can possibly think of on offer. My Mexican chill was delicious.

Day 12 – Day at sea Breakfast on deck before heading to the pool area, where we had lunch from a BBQ that had been provided by the excellent catering team. In the afternoon, Maisie went to children’s club to make costumes for the big children’s party that evening, so Gill and I spent some time relaxing on deck. Then, the last formal night of the cruise involved another stunning meal in the Symphony restaurant, where I elected to try the 50 year celebration menu – a wise choice!

Day 13 – Day at sea On the last day of this truly fantastic holiday, Maisie wanted to walk on the sea walk for the hundredth time and visit the buffet restaurant for another fantastic breakfast. Next, a final trip to the swimming pool then sports deck to enjoy football and basketball. We visited the Princess Live theatre where they were filming a live TV show and then had lunch at the Atrium café. One final visit to the children’s club, while I was forced to walk around the perfume shop again!

NEWS

French flair for Seven Seas Explorer Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ forthcoming vessel Seven Seas Explorer has had the cruising world excited since details first emerged, but it has recently been announced that the opulent ship will feature a brand-new restaurant, Chartreuse. This French-themed dining venue will ooze style and flair, both in its stunning décor and mouth-watering menus. The flooring has been designed to resemble a traditional Parisian street and an area of the restaurant is designed to recreate that famous French al-fresco experience. The menus will feature such gourmet delights as hand-cut Charolais steak tartare, Poached Brittany Blue Lobster and frozen Chartreuse parfait.

Top chef Thomas Keller joins Seabourn Crystal to make history in 2018 In 2018, ultra-luxury line Crystal Cruises will give lucky passengers in search of the voyage of a lifetime the chance to customise their own world cruise, as they begin their journey on one ship and end it on the other. Crystal is offering a choice of four different worldwide itineraries throughout 2018, meaning passengers can play their part in helping the line make history, as they create their ultimate itinerary. Both Crystal Symphony and Crystal Serenity will offer global itineraries and guests can remain on one ship if they wish, but for the ultimate luxury cruise experience, they can travel on both and join the festivities at Sydney’s World Cruise Gala on 17th February.

Seabourn has just announced a new partnership with awardwinning chef and restaurateur Thomas Keller, reinforcing the line’s commitment to providing world-class cuisine aboard its ships. The American chef is the talent behind three different Michelin-starred restaurants, including the celebrated French Laundry, which regularly features in Restaurant Magazine’s Top 50 Restaurants in the World. Keller will bring his culinary vision to the whole Seabourn fleet and will also be working with the line to create an all-new signature dining venue, set to debut next spring on Seabourn Quest.

FOCUS SEVEN SEAS EXPLORER Chalk May 2016 in your diary because that’s the date the new Seven Seas Explorer, already heralded as the most luxurious cruise ship in the world, sets sail on her inaugural season in the Mediterranean.

It will be an exciting moment, the culmination of years of planning by Regent Seven Seas Cruises – a six-star company already well versed in the meaning of luxury. After all, this is the cruise line that brought the world the first all-suite, all-balcony ships and delivers truly all-inclusive prices, including flights and transfers to drinks, gratuities, shore excursions and even Wi-Fi. But the best just got even better. Seven Seas Explorer might be another all-suite, all-balcony ship, but in terms of personal space and quality of materials and craftsmanship, she will be one-of-akind, rivaling the best hotels in the world. For those with an interest in numbers, at 56,000 tons, she holds just 750 passengers, offering one of the highest space-to-guest ratios in the industry.

Observation Lounge

Regent has pulled in some of the top teams in the world, with fantastic attention to detail and clever use of vibrant colours and plush textiles to lend more than a touch of glamour to the vessel. Highlights include the beautiful inlaid marble floor, elegant columns and an ornate crystal chandelier in the atrium, and the floor-to-ceiling windows in the Observation Lounge, itself themed on the Roaring Twenties with stunning Art Deco styling. Step into the Explorer Lounge for a pre-dinner cocktail and you’re in a country club-style setting with rich mahogany woods that are complemented with leather chairs and blue fabrics. The Constellation Theatre, on the other hand, takes you back to Hollywood’s Golden Age, with eye-catching vivid blue seats, all with unobstructed views, matched to handy side tables topped by Murano glass lamps.

Regent Suite living room

There are lots of amazing new features on Seven Seas Explorer including a Culinary Arts Kitchen with 18 individual cooking stations where you can learn to create scrumptious dishes under the guidance of expert chefs, but top billing has to go to the Regent Suite, a one-off luxury apartment that easily eclipses some of the best pads in Manhattan. Indeed, it has already proved to be the most sought-after piece of real estate at sea after being snapped up the moment Seven Seas Explorer’s inaugural season went on sale. At 3,875 square feet, it is not only the biggest suite at sea but the only one with its own spa complete with a sauna, steam room and even heated loungers. Unlimited spa treatments are included in the cost, as are airport transfers and shore excursions by private limos. Passengers staying in this exclusive suite will be able to entertain friends at a swanky black marble bar to the sounds of live music played on the suite’s custommade Steinway piano (someone to tinkle the ivories will even be provided if needed). Occupants can share the captain’s 270-degree views of the ocean from their glass-enclosed Vista Garden at the front of the ship or just lie in bed and enjoy the expansive sea views.

Fine dining

There is only one Regent Suite, but naturally there is plenty of other sumptuous accommodation available, from spacious entry-level Veranda Suites to Park Avenuestyled Master Suites, all kitted out with the quality fittings and furnishings you’d expect from the world’s most luxurious ship. Choose a suite at Penthouse level or above and you’ll be looked after by a private butler; opt for a Concierge or higher suite and you’ll enjoy unlimited free Wi-Fi.

Step outside your suite and you’ll find many of Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ signature dining venues, but all featuring the spectacular new look and feel that really sets this ship apart. There is certainly something to suit every taste, from succulent steaks and Italian favourites to the delicious multi-course menus served in the Compass Rose main dining room and Gallic classics in a stylish new French restaurant, Chartreuse. Chartreuse promises a touch of Parisian romance with its ‘cobblestone’ entrance, sophisticated restaurant and al-fresco-like courtyard garden with marble flooring and decorative lanterns. Speciality cocktails are infused with the French liquor Chartreuse – bien sur! – while iron sculpting pays homage to, what else but the Eiffel Tower. On the menu, French classics such as steak tartar, rack of lamb and lobster tail take a modern twist. The icing on the cake is that all dining, including the specialty restaurants, is included in the price. But then what else would you expect from the winning combination of a cruise on the world’s most luxurious ship with the most-inclusive cruise line in the world?

ANGKOR WAT

40

HANOI

People go to Angkor Wat to see the spectacular temples, which were built 900-1000 years ago. They are fantastic for their architecture and intricate carvings and while Angkor Thom is wonderful in its grandeur, it is outdone by Angkor Wat.

A one day tour of Hanoi is sufficient to see Ho Chi Minh’s tomb, the Presidential Palace, old Hanoi, and for those who are interested, the Hanoi jail which housed American POWs including former presidential candidate John McCain.

Angkor Wat is particularly interesting as it highlights the evil of man. Visit the War Museum, the Land Mine Museum and the Killing Fields, but talk to the people – the wounds are still fresh enough to get first-hand accounts.

We spent a day driving three hours each way to Halong Bay and took a private four hour boat tour of the area. The rock formations here are beautiful and our guide was very knowledgeable.

HUE AND DA NANG We docked in Chan May, midway between Hue and Da Nang. Hue is the Imperial period capital of Vietnam and those interested in history will enjoy the Imperial City, which is very similar to the Forbidden City in Beijing. Here we also saw a famous pagoda and went to the local market. From Hue we darted south to Da Nang, where China Beach, popular among American GIs during the war, is now home to a string of resorts. Marble Mountain was interesting, with marble shops offering bargains across the street. In town we walked among markets and shops and it was clear that we could have spent more time in Da Nang.

HO CHI MINH CITY Ho Chi Minh City is a vibrant metropolis with lots of western shops and Vietnamese wares. Key sites are Reunification Hall, War Remnants Museum and Cu Chi Tunnels, while the main shopping is on Dong Khoi and Le Loi streets, emanating from Union Square. The best restaurant in the city is One Square at the Park Hyatt, while Ben Thanh market is great for Vietnamese goods.

KO SAMUI This small Thai island doesn’t have much to see or do, but is perfect for travellers who want to regenerate and relax. We went to Four Seasons resort which was magnificent, with rooms and villas on stilts built into the hills overlooking the sea.

Singapore is a true marvel, with incredible shopping, modern gleaming hotels and plenty of interesting things to see and do. One of the most upscale shopping malls is the Marina Mall, which features a botanical garden within the complex. Among the sites to see here is Changi Prison Museum. The site commemorates the internment of soldiers during WWII and their heroics during that time. The city’s botanical gardens are also exquisite, and we are told that those who went to the zoo, particularly on the night tour, found it fascinating. In summary, we wish we had more time in Singapore and it is definitely worth at least a three night visit.

INTERVIEW WITH NIGEL MARVEN By Simon Brotherton Wildlife presenter and enthusiast Nigel Marven is presenting a brand new TV series Cruise Ship Adventures, on which he travels on an Azamara cruise ship to a variety of amazing destinations to meet some equally amazing wildlife. Hi Nigel. Tell us a little about how you got involved with the show? Azamara offers immersive experiences and someone I worked with at the Discovery Channel used to be an Azamara consultant and had suggested the idea of getting a TV presenter to give talks on the ships. They asked and I didn’t think I’d fancy cruising but it was fantastic – I enjoyed everything about it. The ship, the crew, the captains, the entertainers … they’re just as much stars of the show as the wildlife. I wanted to make the point of not doing the show on a dedicated expedition ship, but on one which visits ports that other cruise ships visit.

Many people will remember you for famously swimming with a Great White Shark without a cage and letting a giant spider crawl over your face. Did you perhaps take it a little easier in the series? Ha! Ha! No I didn’t! There’s lots of gung-ho adventure but this time I get other people involved too.

What’s your favourite animal that you met while making the show? The most memorable was a sperm whale that I met underwater in Dominica, something which you can do yourself as a very special cruise excursion if you get permission to snorkel with sperm whales. I had a 10 metre sperm whale with a head big enough to hold a car coming straight towards me!

To book call 0800 072 3117

Azamara captains and crew are certainly not short of good destination knowledge but do you think you’ve given them a little more to talk about the next time they’re at sea? Yes I think so. Captain Carl of the Azamara Quest came alligator wrestling with me in the first episode! Also, in the Indian episode we go to Chania, and Captain Jose and myself are escorted by a snake-hunting tribe to go cobra hunting. I’ve never seen such undiluted joy on someone’s face than when Captain Jose touches a cobra – it was truly amazing. Cruisers will be familiar with the ‘walk of shame’, when someone arrives back at the ship late, well Captain Jose enjoyed it so much he was the one doing the walk of shame that day – with all the passengers watching!

Cruises are a good way to get a taste of different countries and cultures in one holiday, so are they a good way to get to know lots of different wildlife too? The series certainly gives some pointers about how you can get to see wildlife on a cruise. In one of the episodes we stop in Sri Lanka and I realised that if you plan your day with Azamara properly, you can see blue whales in the morning, then in the afternoon, go inland and see Asian Elephants. You have got time to see wildlife if you plan properly. You need a ship like an Azamara one, where there are not too many people on-board and it’s staying in port for longer hours, or overnight.

How important do you think it is for companies to take responsibility for the world they operate in? It’s very important. Obviously that was another reason to choose Azamara – I wouldn’t want to go on a cruise ship that causes lots of environmental damage, and Azamara are very careful where they anchor. While I was on-board, a passenger had found a bat in their room, which was fed milk every few hours by the ship’s environmental officer until we got to port and transferred it to an animal hospital. That was the sort of thing that really attracted me to Azamara.

Be honest, did you get the chance to unwind while on-board? Yes, everyone was really friendly and we did have a full day off on one of the sea days, so myself and the crew could really appreciate all the on-board features, the food, and all the wonderful stuff that went on. The shows were great fun and I enjoyed it a lot.

Is there any animal you’d love to meet that you’ve not yet had chance to? Yes, a snow leopard. A cruise isn’t the best way to see one but from a cruise ship, I could meet a lion-tailed Macaque – another creature I’ve always wanted to see. You only get them in the Western Ghats in India and from one of the ports we visit in the Indian Ocean show, you could travel from the ship to see them in the wild.

Cruise Ship Adventures is now showing on UKTV’s Watch, Tuesdays at 8pm

Lesser known ports of

AUSTRALASIA Australasia may be on the other side of the world, but it attracts droves of British cruisers every year with its wonderful blend of vibrant cities, spectacular scenery and welcoming atmosphere. While iconic cities like Sydney and Auckland may be at the top of most visitors’ list of must-see ports, Australasia offers so much more to discover, including these lesser-known but equally exciting destinations.

HOBART As the capital of the Australian state of Tasmania, Hobart has quickly become one of the region’s most sought-after destinations. The city’s smaller size creates a more intimate and charming ambience when compared to Australia’s larger metropolises, which often strikes a chord with travellers looking for a more peaceful getaway Down Under. Hobart is Australia’s second oldest city and as such, is brimming with fascinating historical landmarks, alongside a thriving wine culture – perfect for those who enjoy a fine vintage.

WHITSUNDAY ISLANDS Australia’s Whitsunday Islands comprise 74 different isles and are arguably one of the nation’s most naturally beautiful coastal destinations. The entire area has a paradise-like feel, where pristine sandy beaches meet clear blue warm ocean waters filled with colourful coral, attracting divers from around the world. Much of the region’s underwater wonderland forms part of the Great Barrier Reef and the majority of the islands here are classed as national parks, which shows just how much Australians treasure this stunning corner of their country.

TAURANGA

Located at the top of New Zealand’s South Island, Picton is a scenic coastal town and the ideal gateway to the country’s spectacular Marlborough Sounds. This breathtaking corner of New Zealand offers the chance to see the astonishing natural beauty for which the nation is best known.

The city of Tauranga sits on the east coast of New Zealand’s North Island along the aptly-named Bay of Plenty, and is not only an excellent cultural hub, but also home to a host of incredible natural attractions.

However you choose to explore Picton and its surrounding landscape, you will no doubt be stopped in your tracks by the area’s incredible mix of sweeping valleys, vast waterways and untouched forests, creating a true visual feast for all those lucky enough to arrive here.

ISLE OF PINES

One such landmark is White Island, a dramatic active volcano. Also nearby is Mauao, a small mountain overlooking the city. Intrepid travellers who scale Mauao’s peaks will be rewarded with spectacular views across Tauranga and its stunning coastline.

What makes luxury special?

DINING By Mark Haldon

For many people who cruise, fine food and drink is one of the most important parts of the on-board experience. Luckily for them, luxury cruise lines understand this common cruising mindset and put incredible effort and considerable preparation into providing guests with the finest gourmet cuisine each and every evening Whether you’re looking for a sophisticated five course meal, mouth-watering buffet-style dining or a quick snack to keep up your energy levels, you will be catered for. Each and every dining venue on-board offers a unique experience and if you have time, you should try to enjoy as many as possible during your time at sea for a truly diverse gastronomic journey. All of the major luxury cruise lines will feature a main dining venue aboard every ship. Many main dining venues will adapt and change their menus each night, often to reflect the next destination on the itinerary, providing meals inspired by local culture ashore, using the freshest ingredients sourced from in port. Speciality restaurants however, will usually focus on a specific kind of cuisine. Some cruise ship speciality restaurants even feature menus created by world-famous celebrity chefs, including Nobuyuki ‘Nobu’ Matsuhisa and Jacque Pepin.

Silk Road – Sample delectable cuisine from master chef Nobu, renowned for his innovative approach to sushi, blending classic styled Japanese meals with Peruvian and European influences. Silk Road offers celebrated dishes such as lobster with truffle-yuzu sauce, grilled wagyu beef rib-eye with wasabi pepper pauce, alongside signature desserts like a Bento Box filled with chocolate soufflé cake with shiso syrup and sesame ice cream.

Jacques – Found aboard Marina and Riviera, Jacques was modelled after a Parisian bistro, offering a range of indulgent French cuisine. From the glistening show rotisserie, where chicken, duck, pork, beef and veal roasts slowly turn, to the sumptuous coq au vin and crispy pommes de terre, each dish is a classic, ingeniously reinterpreted by Master Chef Jacques Pépin.

Restaurant 2 - With tables for two or six, Restaurant 2 features a colourful, somewhat unconventional tasting menu of seven courses, prepared by two chefs who do nothing else but serve this restaurant. The food here is a twist on French nouvelle cuisine with Asian influences – from fois gras creme brulee and shellfish cappuccino, to pan-seared quail breast and lobster with lemongrass.

Le Champagne - The only Relais & Châteaux restaurant at sea, Le Champagne offers the chance to indulge in an evening of seasonally inspired dishes, crafted with the finest artisan products and freshest, locally sourced ingredients available. The menu changes every day to reflect each new destination and provide guests with a wonderful culinary experience of authentic regional flavour.

Prime 7 - A luxurious setting with a modern flair, Prime 7 sets a new standard in steakhouse dining with its contemporary interpretation of an American classic. All the traditional starters are available here, including jumbo Maryland lump crab cakes and oysters Rockefeller. All steaks are dry-aged for at least 28 days to guarantee the ultimate tenderness, juiciness and flavour.

The big

INTERVIEW WITH KATY PORTER

We took time out to speak to CLIA’s Young Travel Agent of the Year, SixStarCruises.co.uk Cruise Concierge Katy Porter about cruising, travel and her year so far.

Tell us about how you started in travel?

I started in travel four years ago when I left Runshaw Adult College after studying Travel and Events Management. I worked hard at college and it was all worthwhile when I quickly gained a job at World Travel Holdings as a member of the Cruise Concierge team.

50

.co.uk

Tell us about some of the cruises you’ve been on – which are your favourite cruise lines?

I have been on Celebrity Infinity, Royal Caribbean’s Adventure of the Seas, Fred Olsen’s Black Watch and my favourite which was Regent Seven Seas’ Seven Seas Mariner. My time aboard Mariner was absolutely amazing – I love six-star cruises and the feeling of complete luxury on-board.

What was the awards ceremony like on the night you won? What did it feel like when your name was announced?

Winning Young Travel Agent of the Year was one of the best achievements of my life! However I can be rather shy with too much attention, so I was a bit nervous. Having said that, I was very proud of myself and really appreciate all of the recognition I’ve received.

What advice would you give to anyone considering a career in travel? I would advise them to never give up as there is a lot to learn, but the more effort that they put in, the more rewards and benefits they will enjoy. The travel industry can be very gratifying, but only if you work hard to do the best you can for your customers.

Where do you see yourself in five years’ time?

I see myself still being involved with the SixStarCruises.co.uk team, but perhaps venturing into the events side of the business, meeting with customers and cruise lines across the country. But who knows, a career in travel can take you anywhere!

And finally, how’s 2015 started for you? It’s been quite the year already personally as well hasn’t it?

So far 2015 has been an amazing year for me. I have bought my first house, moved in and recently I got engaged. It really has been one of the best years of my life to date and I’m excited to see what the rest of the year holds in store.

Bergen

Where in the world have you been and what are your favourite destinations?

I have been lucky enough to go around the Western Med to visit lots of exciting ports like Barcelona and Monte Carlo, but I have recently won a river cruise along the Mekong in Southeast Asia, which is on my bucket list of areas I’d love to travel to.

What is it about cruises that you like the best?

I like that fact that you don’t just visit one place in one holiday – you can see lots of new and exciting ports across an entire region on one trip. The fact that the food on-board is all included is always a bonus too – cruise ship cuisine is always fantastic!

CRUISE NEWS Meuse River, Belgium

Avalon opens Meuse River sailings Avalon Waterways is to open up a new corner of Europe for river cruisers to explore in 2016, when it begins operating voyages along the Meuse River in Belgium.

While the majority of river cruise lines provide sailings between Amsterdam and Maastricht in the Netherlands, meandering along the Dutch and Belgian Waterways, Avalon is to introduce a new itinerary travelling further south of Maastricht along the Meuse to arrive in the Belgian city of Namur. Avalon’s new Enchanting Belgium itinerary will offer sailings through scenic Belgium along the Meuse aboard both Avalon Luminary and Avalon Artistry II, with four departures in April 2016. The state-of-the-art Avalon Luminary is smaller than many river cruise vessels and boasts revolutionary engineering and designer interiors, while Avalon Artistry is a Suite Ship featuring wall-to-wall panoramic windows.

AmaWaterways is perfect for wine-lovers If you’re looking to book a river cruise in 2016 and you love wine, then AmaWaterways is the perfect river cruise line to choose, as it is offering double its previous number of wine itineraries. Each of the 34 wine sailings will feature a dedicated wine expert on-board, with excursions tailored specifically to wine-lovers. AmaWaterways’ ‘Taste of Bordeaux’ itineraries will also make their debut in 2016, offering river cruisers just that on-board the stylish AmaDolce, as they explore both the Garonne and Dordogne Rivers. Whichever itinerary you choose, you’re guaranteed an unforgettable journey and plenty of wine tasting opportunities, with stops in Cadillac, Pauillac and Libourne – celebrated for their prestigious wine chateaux and vineyards.

Viking christens 12 new vessels Viking has expanded what is already the biggest fleet in river cruising, bringing the line’s total number of ships to 60. Eight of the ships were named in a glittering ceremony involving music, fireworks and a Champagne bottle to welcome each new vessel. The other four vessels were christened at the same time in Rostock’s Neptun Werft shipyard. Ten of the ships were the line’s signature Viking Longships but two were smaller and lighter ‘baby longships’ which will cater to just 98 passengers and are designed specifically for cruises along the shallower Elbe River. The remaining 10 vessels will operate itineraries along the Rhine, Main and Danube rivers.

OPINION

SPEND, SPEND, SPEND by Rose Williams

Pensions. Now there’s a word to conjure with. Have you noticed how it has become a pejorative term? Baby boomers like me and Charlie have the audacity, after life times of working (dare I say slaving) in the public services, to draw down final salary pensions. I was a nurse, a health visitor and finally a lecturer in further education and Charlie was a teacher and then a union official. Now there is another group of people entering the golden age. Fifty-five year olds, who do not have to buy annuities but have the freedom to decide what to do with their own money. I ask you what will the powers that be come up with next? According to the media, the new pensioners are going to go bananas splurging on Lamborghinis and would you believe it – cruises.

Fellow cruiser, fear not, this is not another rebel rant but a reasonable, well relatively reasonable, consideration of the benefits of cruising for golden oldies. I have written before of the general benefits of cruising and if you are reading this article, chances are that you’re already a convert to spending time at sea or on the waterways of the world. Free from the constraints of the time limits of annual leave, longer cruises to far-flung places become more of an option. No matter how stimulating and absorbing our work in the private, public or voluntary sectors was, time away from work to relax and recuperate was limited and precious. Accepting that many of us might, in our retirement, have to work around family responsibilities of elderly parents and grandchildren, cruising is now more than a holiday. It is time to take a breath, look around and consider more fully cultures, scenery and experiences that were beyond the reach of ordinary people a few years ago. My mum, who loved to travel, would never have considered Machu Picchu, the Galapagos Islands or Greenland as travel destinations. Now we can have it all for a price – a hard earned slice of our pension. Charlie and I have two longer cruises planned. We are exploring Greenland, Iceland and Norway this summer. Next year, to celebrate being together for 50 years, we are off to the South Pacific and in the process we are completing a circumnavigation of the world.

A significant hidden benefit, to us, of longer cruises has been the time to get to know likeminded fellow travellers. Choosing to undertake an expedition to Antarctica or any other focused cruises means time spent with people who are like-minded. On our fantastic trip to the bottom of the world we met a couple who have become firm friends. They live in the New Forest we live in Chorley, Lancashire. We have worn a hole in the M6 as we journey back and forth. They have seen the delights of Lancashire and The Lake District we have enjoyed the ponies and flora and fauna of the New Forest as well as the Hampshire and Dorset coast. At the start of our retirement and to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary we took a cruise through the Panama Canal. The journey was fraught with hold ups and missed flights. Sharing our frustration was a couple who are now in the league of best friends. A frustrating journey of hold ups, delayed flights and airport problems has led to a mutually supportive, loving and warm relationship that has seen both couples through times of happiness and sorrow. So to baby boomers on annuity-based pensions and those approaching 55 with the new freedom to spend your nest eggs I say go for it. Enjoy your hard earned pot of cash. We have freedoms to travel that most of our parents could only dream of. The world is very much ours for the taking, preferably from the balcony of a cruise ship with a glass of something cold in our hands to toast ourselves and our pensions.

YourLETTERS Whether you can’t wait to tell us about your last cruise, are excited about your next one or want to share a tip with fellow readers we always welcome your letters so keep them coming in.

Star Letter Finding the perfect ship Britannia rules the waves Rule Britannia! What an awesome ship! We were there at her rather regal naming ceremony and couldn’t believe the size of her – the ship that is not the Queen! Now we’re looking forward to climbing aboard in June on a Med cruise from Southampton – can’t wait! Mr Jackson

Time your teeth whitening Loved the fact that our cruise ship offered teeth whitening procedures on-board, but we made the mistake of getting it done on the very first day. Our teeth were white as pearls but due to the initial discomfort, we weren’t able to really enjoy our food for a couple of days. It was a great treatment – I just wish we had waited until the end of our cruise so we could have made the most of the buffet at the start. Mrs Beaumont

TIPS 66

CRUISE Concierge

My son and his family have been cruising for years and introduced us to the experience a couple of years ago. My wife and I went on a Med cruise aboard Norwegian Jade with them but found it to be a little too lively on-board for us. We did however love the prospect of visiting multiple destinations on one holiday and it was suggested to us that we try an adults-only cruise aboard P&O Cruises’ Arcadia. So we booked a cruise to the Norwegian Fjords on Arcadia and I must say it was fantastic! Really relaxing on-board, great food, amazing scenery – and best of all we sailed from Southampton so we didn’t need to fly. I would recommend this ship to anyone looking for a peaceful but exciting cruise holiday. Diana Greaves

We’re glad you found your perfect ship Diana, it’s important to know what you’re looking for from your cruise when you come to book. P&O Cruises aren’t the only cruise line to offer adultsonly cruises though – Cruise & Maritime Voyages are also a great option and offer sailings from the UK too.

Make sure you to travel to your embarkation port the day before you’re departure. If you’re on a tight schedule and your flight is late, you could easily miss your ship – Keith Baxter Make copies of all your important documents or you’ll end up in a stress when you inevitably misplace something – Coleen Purdon Avoid the buffet on the first day. It’s always a mad rush so be patient and you’ll enjoy a more relaxed buffet dining experience later in your cruise – Oliver Hanley You don’t need to book your shore excursions with your cruise line – shop around like I do to find the best deal – Hugh Clegg Spa treatments are often cheaper on certain days when the ship if quieter, especially on port days when everyone else is ashore – Marjorie Benson

QUESTIONS Cruise holidays offer an exciting way to travel the world but people often have lots of questions about the experience. Our Cruise Concierge team is always on-hand to answer any of your cruise concerns but in the meantime, take a look below to see some of the questions that have already been submitted. I don’t drink. Must I buy an alcohol drinks package? Many cruise lines offer drinks packages as a better way of budgeting for your holiday drinks from day to day. However, if you don’t drink alcohol, you can still benefit from such packages, as most cruise lines also offer soft drinks packages which work in exactly the same way. These are a great idea if you’re cruising with the kids too.

How long before I receive booking confirmation? It depends on which line you travel with, but in most cases and certainly when you book your cruise with Cruise118.com, you will receive confirmation of your booking within 24 hours of making it. You will receive a cruise line invoice and statement within 14 days from the date of your booking.

Do you know of any trips not to be missed on a Norwegian fjords itinerary? There are many cruise lines which operate Norwegian fjords itineraries and each offers a wide choice of excursions to suit any type of traveller. The type of trip depends on how active you are, but certainly not to be missed are trips out to the most renowned fjords such as the UNESCO World Heritage Site Geirangerfjord and the beautiful Hardangerfjord, a trip on Flam’s famous railway, and sight-seeing tours of the art Nouveau town Alesund and Bergen’s historic Hanseatic Wharf, another UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Do Royal Caribbean offer sickness jabs? Yes, Royal Caribbean has medical facilities on-board each of their ships. If guests become sick during their cruise, sickness jabs can be administered by trained staff, who are available around the clock. Royal Caribbean has a medical centre on-board each vessel with state-of-the-art equipment which assists not only sickness but other medical problems as well.

Can I charge a kindle or mobile phone on board P&O? Do I need a US/UK adapter? Yes, you can charge your mobile phone or Kindle on board P&O ships. All cabins are fitted with British 3-pin sockets, but should you wish to use multiple appliances, you may like to bring an extension lead with you. On Oceana cruise ships, each cabin is equipped with a three-pin British socket and a US two-pin socket, but on the other ships, you would need to bring an adaptor to use American appliances.

Is it possible to take a small ironing board onboard a cruise ship? No, you are not allowed to bring travel irons on-board anymore, but once on-board, you can ask for one to be delivered to your cabin. Another great reason for not bringing them along in your suitcase is that there are self- service launderettes on some cruise lines which feature ironing stations.

COCKTAILS SUMMER 2015

Mother Nature seems to be toying with us this year. A brief glimpse of the sun and temperatures rising only to be followed by cold icy blasts with rain, sleet and snow. Four seasons in a weekend but summer is on its way. What better time to be looking for inspiration for your next cruise.

The June Bug

Blue Lagoon

1 x 25ml Midori Melon Liqueur

1 x 25ml Vodka

1 x 25ml Bols Banana Liqueur

1 x 25ml Bols Blue Curacao

1 x 25ml Coconut Rum

Lemonade

100ml Pineapple Juice 1 x 25ml Fresh lime juice

Method

Pour all of the ingredients into a Boston shaker and fill with ice, shake for 10 seconds and strain into a hurricane glass filled with crushed ice. Garnish with a pineapple slice and a cherry.

Method

Take a highball glass and fill with cubed ice. Pour over the vodka and Blue Bols and give it a stir, top with lemonade, stir and garnish with a cherry.

The summer trends are starting to evolve and it looks like we are having a throwback to the 1980s with disco and blue drinks reemerging as favourites to be this year’s en vogue choices. The 1980s saw cocktails come back into fashion along with flared trousers, shoulder pads, the new romantic look, tight spandex and big curly, bouffant hair styles. The film ‘Cocktail’ released in July 1988 and featuring Tom Cruise as Brian Flanagan brought the whole cocktail scene to the fore. Most 80s cocktail lists get a bad rep these days due to the fact that a lot of cheap ingredients were used, it was more about with whom and where you were drinking rather than what you were drinking. The drinks making a revival this year tend to be long, fruity and very easy to drink. The good news is that many bars believe that only the best ingredients should be used. Bar calls for Woo Woo’s, Sex on the Beach, Long Island Ice Tea, Blue Lagoon’s and my guilty pleasure the June Bug are on the increase. Here are the recipes for two of the drinks, a nice easy build in the glass with the Blue Lagoon and a shaken cocktail The June Bug.

HOME FROM HOME By Cath Cole

£7.99 from Amazon

Cath Cole’s debut novel, Home from Home, covers the lives of five student nurses in the 1960s across three years of training. The challenges of balancing five main characters along with a colourful supporting cast over such a long time period are aptly dealt with, as the story nimbly skips across time without ever feeling rushed or sacrificing the depth of each unique and intriguing lead. Cole quickly establishes a rapport not just between the five young women but between these characters and the reader, as she charts the trials and relationships that define them. Certainly an enjoyable story that offers an authentic glimpse into life at this time, and a charming light read perfect for a holiday.
