Fred Olsen Top 20 Highlights in 2016/17

Page 1

Fred.’s Top 20 Cruises The 20 new 2016/17 cruises in this brochure have been carefully crafted to show the very best of what Fred. does: smaller ships taking you closer to your destination; scenic cruising through gorgeous landscapes; visits to exotic and remote islands; a host of exciting new ports of call; and the chance to tick unforgettable experiences off your list. SHOWING YOU THE BEST OF THE WORLD…

While we do everything we can to ensure every moment you spend with us is enjoyed to the full, we know the number one reason for booking any holiday is the places you’ll visit. So we spend months intricately planning our itineraries for each season to ensure they are inspiring, exciting and notably different from the mainstream cruise company fare. While we would not use the term favourites – everyone’s tastes are different of course – the cruises in this brochure have all been carefully chosen for their variety and the unique experiences they contain: there are some real journeys of discovery that you won’t want to miss. These exciting holidays offer a host of must-see destinations, world-famous events and adventures waiting to be had. There’s a chance to: go whale watching in Iceland; witness the Midnight Sun; see magnificent icebergs and glaciers in Spitsbergen; discover the UK, from Lands’ End to John O’Groats; watch the thrilling Monaco Grand Prix; and join in the Hogmanay celebrations in Edinburgh or the Mardi Gras in New Orleans. The advantage of our smaller ships comes through again and again too. We’ll divert down waterways that bigger ships can’t access to show you the very best of your destination with even more stunning scenic cruising. Sail pretty rivers cutting through the French countryside; visit the breathtaking Norwegian Fjords 2

in only five nights; glide along German waterways to wonderful cities; admire the picturesque fjords of Denmark; witness Scotland’s spectacular scenery via beautiful lochs; or sail the dramatic, hard-to-reach fjords of Greenland. There’s all this and more included in this brochure. We also have two very exciting Grand Voyages in early 2017. There’s the fantastic opportunity to circumnavigate the globe on Black Watch. Climb Sydney Harbour Bridge; enjoy afternoon tea at Raffles in Singapore; cruise the Great Barrier Reef; visit the idyllic islands of French Polynesia; and absorb the spellbinding beauty of New Zealand. Alternatively join Boudicca as she heads for South America, where you can learn the Tango in Buenos Aires; uncover the ancient hidden city of Machu Picchu; and spend two days in the 2016 Olympics’ host city, Rio de Janeiro. These are once-in-a-lifetime trips, packed full of never to be forgotten experiences. The only downside is that you can’t do both.

Cruising Fred. Olsen style THE FRED. DIFFERENCE

We don’t have the newest ships. We don’t have zip wires, wave machines or climbing walls. We don’t have celebrity chefs or cocktail mixologists. What we do have is long-serving staff carefully chosen for their friendly, caring personalities, ‘real ships’ that are regularly improved so they cater for your every need, cuisine carefully prepared by chefs who care about their craft, not their egos, and a passion to show you the very best of the world. Most cruise lines try to keep you on their ship so you’ll spend more money with them. We encourage you to head off on a journey of discovery in every destination. There are more places to see in the world than anyone could fit in one lifetime – but at Fred. Olsen we think there’s no harm in trying.

SMALLER BUT SPACIOUS

Smaller ships doesn’t mean less room: far from it. Each cabin has ample space, with an en suite bathroom and all the facilities you’ll need to enjoy your holiday in comfort. In fact, our rooms are comparable in size to those on some of the mammoth cruise ships – while our vessels are of a more accessible size, you can have just as much private space. With less people on board it’s easy to find a quiet spot to relax in peace with a drink or a good book. There’s room to stretch out by the pool and you can get ashore quicker – without the need to fight for space with hordes of people. And when you’re ashore you’re seeing the best of each port of call with hundreds of others – not thousands – giving you a better, more authentic experience.

AWARD-WINNING HOLIDAYS FROM A WHICH? RECOMMENDED PROVIDER FOR CRUISES

We’ll do our best to give you the holiday of a lifetime – but don’t just take our word for it. We’re a small company but that didn’t stop us being rated joint second in the 2014 Which? Cruise Survey and we were named a Which? Recommended Provider for Cruises too – an achievement that all the staff and crew at Fred. Olsen are very proud of. We were also delighted to have been voted Best Value for Money in the Cruise Critic UK Editors’ Picks Awards for the third consecutive year. Most importantly, in over 10,000 independent reviews from past guests, 95% rated us Excellent or Good and we were awarded the Feefo Gold Trusted Merchant Accreditation for our excellence in customer service throughout 2014. Perhaps that’s why last year more than half our guests had travelled with us before.

Fred. Olsen is a Which? Recommended Provider for Cruises

BRINGING YOU CLOSER

Our size advantage means we can take you to places that some of the larger cruise vessels can’t. We dock closer to the heart of some of the world’s most beautiful cities and can take you on scenic cruises showcasing breathtaking landscapes. Our itineraries are expertly crafted to make the most of this advantage, making your time with us so much more rewarding.

ural landscapes will pass smoothly before your eyes as Braemar cruises the Guadalquivir, Gironde, Garonne and Seine rivers, which are only navigable by smaller ships. You’ll get to explore Portugal’s capital; stop in the centre of stunning Seville; visit the Galician town of Vigo; enjoy Easter festivities ashore and on board; visit beautiful Bordeaux; and discover historic Rouen.

Lisbon, Portugal

Portugal’s beautiful capital is spread out over seven hills on the north of the River Tagus. Along with several fascinating museums, the city has many architectural delights, including the Belem Tower, the Jeronimos Monastery and the 25 de Abril Bridge. Be sure to explore the pretty backstreets by foot or tram and indulge in some window shopping too.

Glide serenely towards the centre of Seville along the Guadalquivir, one of the longest rivers in Spain. Braemar is one of the largest ships that can transit the 45 nautical miles up this tidally restricted river – others have to stop at coastal Cádiz, a 90-minute bus ride away from the city.

Vigo, Spain

At the centre of Vigo is the Iglesia Concatedral de Santa Maria, where you’ll find several charming plazas with open-air cafés and bars. Explore the medieval streets of Vigo’s delightful old quarter, admire the art collections at the Museo Municipal de Vigo or take a tour to the UNESCO-listed Santiago de Compostela Cathedral.

Bordeaux, France

Docking right in the heart of the city, it’s easy to take in the highlights of beautiful Bordeaux, which include the Place de la Bourse (Place Royale), the 15th century Cailhai Gate and the Grand Theatre. The region has long been famed for producing high quality wines and a visit here wouldn’t be complete without a tasting... or two.

Seville, Spain

The home of flamenco, tapas and oranges is a delight to explore, with a glorious mix of grand boulevards, twisting streets, cobbled alleys and pretty squares. Don’t miss the gorgeous Plaza de España, the Medieval palace of Alcázar and the UNESCO-listed Seville Cathedral, the largest Gothic cathedral in the world. RECOMMENDED EXPERIENCE Take a magical horse and carriage ride through the beautiful Spanish city of Seville – a great opportunity to capture the exotic gardens and fountains and the emblematic monuments on film.

Bordeaux, France

Seville, Spain

Cruising the Gironde & Garonne rivers

Become enveloped by beautiful countryside as you leave Bordeaux by way of France’s scenic Gironde and Garonne rivers – a 50 nautical mile journey that only smaller ships like Braemar can navigate.

Rouen, France

Rouen is rich in monuments and museums. Stroll through the historical centre and, among the narrow streets that are lined by tall, half-timbered houses, you’ll walk in the footsteps of Richard the Lionheart, Joan of Arc and Gustave Flaubert. RECOMMENDED EXPERIENCE Take a leisurely cruise on the Seine and admire the most famous landmarks of romantic Paris.

Lisbon, Portugal Rouen, France

Cruising the Seine River

Braemar sails over 60 nautical miles along the winding, picturesque Seine River, an experience that has been highly rated by Fred. Olsen guests. This beautiful waterway showcases close-up views of the landscapes of rural France, speckled with pretty houses.

Norfolk is home to the largest naval base in the world. The vibrant waterfront showcases the interactive Nauticus National Maritime Centre and the fascinating battleship USS Wisconsin, in service since World War II. Other highlights in the city include the Botanical Gardens, the Chrysler Museum of Art and the MacArthur Memorial.

Hamilton, Bermuda

In ‘Charm City’, the energetic Inner Harbour is where you’ll find most of the big attractions, including the National Aquarium, the Maryland Science Centre and the American Visionary Museum. Visit the lively waterfront area of Fell’s Point or Federal Hill, which affords fantastic views of the city skyline. Baltimore is also the gateway for tours to Washington DC: the backdrop to thousands of films and TV shows over the years, the capital of the US is prettier and more welcoming than first time visitors might expect.

Hamilton is the small, vibrant, friendly capital of that most desirable of islands, Bermuda. The life and soul of the city can be found on Front Street, which runs along the water’s edge. Here you’ll find shops, restaurants and wonderful views out across Hamilton Harbour. It goes without saying that the beaches are a highlight. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this is a pretty English village bathed in glorious tropical sunshine. Amble along Water Street, home to boutique shops and galleries; explore the World Heritage Centre; visit beautiful Somers Garden and historic King’s Square; and relax on Tobacco Bay Beach.

From £103 per person, per night, including:

Breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, five-course à la carte dinner, late night buffet and self-service tea & coffee • Varied daytime activities • Lectures and talks • Swimming pools, Jacuzzis & gym • Choice of live evening entertainment • Overnight stays in Baltimore, New York and Boston

Norfolk, VA, USA

Ponta Delgada – the main town on the island of São Miguel – has a cosmopolitan atmosphere and a fine selection of parks, cobbled streets and squares, a modern marina and waterfront cafés. The surrounding island plays host to beautiful lakes, magnificent mountains, sandy beaches and lush valleys, as well as the stunning crater lakes of the extinct Sete Cidades Volcano.

St. George, Bermuda

O

n this unique itinerary – where each destination is the namesake of a place back in the UK – you’ll visit six American states, enjoy three overnight stays and discover three Fred. Olsen maiden calls. Explore the vibrant cities of Boston and the ‘Big Apple’; take a tour to Washington DC from Baltimore; cruise the Cape Cod Canal; and spend two days on the island of Bermuda. All this and much more.

Baltimore, MD, USA

New York, USA

New York is arguably the most exciting city in the world. Its legendary sights define a larger-than-life metropolis; the sheer style and energy surpass every expectation. The skyscrapers, yellow cabs, world-renowned stores, Central Park, the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building... nowhere else matches the Big Apple – and you have two days to enjoy it all.

Boston, USA

Gloucester, USA

RECOMMENDED EXPERIENCE Experience the pulse of New York City at night and marvel at the famous skyline from the observatory of the iconic Empire State Building.

Newport, RI, USA

This seaside city grew famous in the 19th century as a fashionable playground for ostentatiously wealthy industrialists – like the Vanderbilts and Astors – all competing to outdo each other in the building of extravagant mansions. Many of these ‘Gilded Age’ homes are now open to the public. Hikers will enjoy the Cliff Walk, a three mile National Recreation Trail that encompasses the beautiful shoreline, historic architecture and varied flora and fauna.

Cruising Cape Cod Canal

From Newport, Balmoral diverts through the artificial waterway of the Cape Cod Canal, to show guests a more scenic route than going back out to sea and giving a little more time in the next port of call, Boston.

Boston, MA, USA

Edging the Charles River, Boston is an appealing fusion of hi-tech skyscrapers and classic Georgian buildings. It’s a lovely city. Stroll the famous Freedom Trail and discover

Bermuda

the chic boutiques and seafood restaurants of Faneuil Hall, once Boston’s oldest market.

Gloucester, MA, USA

Beautiful Gloucester is home to a working harbour and gives access to over 60 miles of coastline. Relax on the gorgeous beaches, go whale watching or try some delicious fresh seafood. There’s also an abundance of interesting galleries and museums, and a vibrant downtown, a great excuse for a spot of shopping.

Portland, ME, USA

Portland is the largest city in Maine – the Pine Tree state – yet it retains a small town charm. Discover the cobbled streets and quaint shops of the Old Port; admire the fine works displayed in the Portland Art Museum; and taste the local tipple in one of the many microbreweries or brewpubs which thrive in the area.

Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada

Nova Scotia’s walkable capital is home to many historic and charming sights. The beautiful Public Gardens are well worth a visit, as is a photo stop on Citadel Hill. Discover the history of the Titanic in the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic (many of those who perished in the disaster were

buried here); stroll along the picturesque waterfront; or take a tour to the rustic fishing village of Peggy’s Cove – its lighthouse has long been an inspiration for artists and photographers.

St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada

The capital city of Newfoundland and Labrador has a rich and colourful history. St. John’s has old world charm, interesting architecture, historic landmarks, beautiful countryside and charming fishing villages in the local area.

Ringaskiddy, Ireland

Formerly a fishing village with century-old traditions in Gaelic games and drama, Ringaskiddy has developed into a modern deepwater ferry port surrounded by beautiful scenery. Standing high above the village is the Martello Tower built in 1804. Head further afield for a walking tour of Cork city, or discover the Jameson Distillery.

For adult travellers only The extended length and nature of this sailing are suited to the adult traveller, therefore only those over 18 are able to join.

ack by popular demand, this exciting sailing is another chance to witness one of the most famous motoring events in the world – the Monaco Grand Prix. There’s also time to relax on popular Mediterranean beaches, treat yourself to tax-free shopping in Gibraltar, visit fashionable, some might say ostentatious, Cannes on the French Riviera and explore Gaudi’s many architectural highlights in Barcelona. Gibraltar

Resolutely British for nearly 300 years, Gibraltar’s unique history and setting unites the oddly familiar – from the helmeted police to Marks & Spencer – with an extrovert Mediterranean mood. Take a trip to see the Barbary Apes, grab some duty-free shopping or board a cable car to enjoy the grandstand views of nearby Spain and Africa.

Barcelona, Spain

Cosmopolitan Barcelona is overflowing with appeal and has a vibrant Catalan spirit and heritage. Stroll Las Ramblas, enjoy tapas in one of the many restaurants, watch the street entertainers with amusement and discover Gaudi’s numerous architectural wonders, including the impressive Sagrada Familia Cathedral, which is still a work in progress.

Cannes, France

Cannes is a picturesque city located on the French Riviera, where you’ll find beautiful beaches, luxury casinos and fascinating museums. A stroll along ‘La Croisette’ is a must. This palm-lined boulevard is bordered by sun-kissed sand and lush public gardens on one side, and an array of boutiques, cafés and hotels the other.

outh America is an amazing part of the world, packed with fantastic cities, fascinating history and fabulous natural splendour. The only downside is the long flights to get there and to get around. That’s why discovering the very best of this wonderful continent in one epic voyage is not only the trip of a lifetime, it also makes a lot of sense. host of incredible experiences are packed into one truly stunning holiday. The Caribbean, North America and Central America: this fantastic trip takes you to some of the world’s most beautiful, exciting and interesting destinations in a once-in-a-lifetime adventure you will never forget. Visit Road Town, Tortola, rich in pirate history. Here you can ride into the rugged inland landscapes on our Jeep Safari tour, or head out into the warm, crystal clear waters and swim with dolphins. Tortola was voted the best port of call in the Caribbean by Fred. Olsen guests, though Barbados, Antigua and St. Lucia aren’t bad either. Honduras, Belize and Mexico all follow in quick succession: bathe in tropical sunshine, Latin culture and fascinating indigenous history. Little can match two nights in New Orleans though, especially as this is perfectly timed so you can join the colourful fun at the annual Mardi Gras. Collect symbolic colourful beads as the revellers (known as ‘krewes’) parade their hand-crafted floats and costumes through the city.

mile upon mile of untouched golden beaches and two awe-inspiring, world famous rocket launch sites – the Kennedy Space Centre and Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. Contrast the fiercely modern architecture of Jacksonville with the gentler Georgian buildings of Charleston. Southern charm marks departure from the shores of the US as the British charm of Bermuda beckons.

In Florida, enjoy Fred.’s maiden call into Tampa, followed by the party atmosphere, relaxed mind-set and beautiful beaches of Key West, Miami and Port Canaveral. This is the chance to explore floral national parks,

For adult travellers only The extended length and nature of this sailing are suited to the adult traveller, therefore only those over 18 are able to join.
