The region’s most notable islands include Santiago Island, Isabela Island, San Cristobal Island and Santa Cruz, all of which are available to explore on expedition cruises.

Unearth cultural highlights and natural wonders when you embark on a journey to the world’s most intoxicating destinations. Taking in sights such as the Amazon rainforest, Machu Picchu, Galapagos Islands and Iguazu Falls, our cruises to South America, Galapagos and Antarctica provide sophisticated travel for discerning voyagers.

The Galapagos Islands’ wildlife attracts many visitors each year and was the inspiration for Darwin’s historic research owing to the incredibly diverse animals such as giant tortoises, sea lions, penguins, iguanas and a wide variety of seabirds. Off the coast, you may also spot whales and dolphins that often congregate nearby. The plant life of the Galapagos has been divided into four ecological zones: coastal, dry, transitional and humid. Each of these zones has its own vegetation, and together with the wildlife they generate a stunning natural environment.

Vibrant culture is an important aspect of your South America itinerary, and each day you will experience something new. Brazil is renowned for its exuberant carnivals, which take place throughout the year. There are many opportunities to immerse yourself in the music and dancing, which is a large part of the culture here.

Lima

Valparaiso

The islands’ remote nature means that only smaller cruise vessels can reach the ports successfully, allowing travellers the chance to explore and discover all that this region has to offer.

The advantage of cruising is that not only do you get the opportunity to visit remote and scarcely populated parts of the continent, you can also explore a variety of destinations in one go without the inconvenience of flying. Working with local experts, Cruise118.com makes it possible for customers to experience captivating contrasts, awaking each day to something new and wonderful.

Antarctic

The ruins of ancient civilisations can be found in various parts of the continent, perhaps the most well known being Machu Picchu, the famous Incan city located in the Peruvian mountains. Or you could discover the oldest rock paintings in the Americas at Serra da Capivara in north east Brazil. The continent also boasts many examples of contemporary architecture in the bustling capitals of Buenos Aires, Santiago, Caracas and Lima, generating a contrasting backdrop across this magnificent region of the world. Each of the cruise itineraries is designed to let you witness the best parts of South America.

Rio de Janeiro

Antarctica When you travel in the footsteps of great Antarctic explorers, you will discover why this unique part of the world has inspired so many. Cruises to Antarctica dock in a number of destinations, from the islands of the Atlantic, such as South Georgia, to the ports of the mainland, including Paradise Bay. Occupying parts of both Argentina and Brazil, the magnificent Iguazu Falls thunder into the Parana River and the narrow ravine of Devil’s Throat from the Parana Plateau. Featuring on the UNECSO World Heritage list, these immense waterfalls are among the planet’s most tremendous sights.

The Amazon River Rio de Janeiro The second largest city in Brazil, Rio de Janeiro has a rich and quite turbulent colonial past. It was inhabited in 1502 by the Portuguese, only to later become the State of Brazil’s capital in 1763. Once Rio achieved independence in 1822, it began to boom both culturally and economically. Today, the vibrant city pulsates with culture and is the most visited city in the Southern Hemisphere. Rio is also home to tropical rainforests and national parks, which have placed this diverse city firmly on the map for wildlife lovers and global travellers. Its sheer beauty is incomparable and the aerial view of the southern shore of Guanabara Bay is simply show stopping. It’s hard to resist the seductive and infectious charm of Rio. The scenery here is nothing short of cinematic, with its iconic landmarks that lie against a haunting backdrop of mountains. Christ the Redeemer, Sugarloaf Mountain and Ipanema Beach are among the most popular and illustrious places to visit. When most people think of Rio, it conjures up a cultural cocktail of colourful bars, open air cafes, carnivals and lively music, which permeates the city, but there is so much more to discover. You could easily spend a week exploring the highlights as well as the lesser known gems.

The Amazon River is one of the richest ecosystems on the planet. It also lays claim to being the second largest river in the world, after the Nile, and stretches for a staggering 6,500 kilometres. The river runs through several countries, including Guyana, Bolivia, Brazil and Colombia, finally emptying into the Atlantic Ocean. Saturating the Amazon rainforest, this region is home to thousands of species of flora and fauna. Incredible animals that you would normally only get to see on the television or in magazines you can see first hand on a cruise along the Amazon River. From dolphins, alligators and river turtles, to snakes and goats, there is a real diversity here. You will have the opportunity to witness many magnificent sights that you can only experience in this unique part of the world. Dotted along the Brazilian part of the river, the boat calls at various cities and towns, such as Santarem, Manaus and Parintins, where old meets new in a spectacular fashion. Ancient traditions of Amazonian tribes still take place today, and it’s a really humbling experience to experience such culture and history. Samba show

Along the river at Santarem, you are greeted by locals and their stalls, where they sell wooden crafts and handmade jewellery. It’s also quite unbelievable to think that Manaus is a city made up of almost two million people. This ancient Brazilian port is an adorable jumble of ornate buildings, bustling food markets and dense jungle. Salvador

Sao Paulo This bustling city is the largest in Brazil and is filled with art-house cinemas and gourmet restaurants, which are considered to be among the best in the world.

Manaus This is the Amazon’s biggest city, which curiously sits in the midst of the rainforest; an unlikely locality for such an energetic place. Manaus is accessed by boat or aeroplane.

Buzios A pretty resort town that draws visitors into its tranquility, Buzios is blessed with cobbled streets, fountains and beautiful buildings, and is synonymous with Brigitte Bardot.

Salvador This city provides a colourful backdrop to 17th and 18th century architecture and frequently hosts cultural music festivals. Salvador has a certain joie de vivre that can’t be found anywhere else.

Buenos Aires

Iguazu Falls

Things to do in Buenos Aires 1. Visit the Basilica del Santisimo Sacramento, an impressive Roman Catholic parish church. The French-style architecture, ornate interior and stained glass windows are a true sight to behold. 2. Take some time out from the city and stroll around Paseo el Rosedal in Palermo Woods, where you can relax among the colourful flowers. There are over 1,000 species of roses and an Andalusian patio.

ARGENTINA Tumultuous and sensational, Argentina’s illustrious past is known throughout the world. As well as being a global economic leader, this intriguing country has many tributes to its name, being the birthplace of the tango, Eva ‘Evita’ Peron and Che Guevara.

3. Take a trip to Iguzau Falls, some of the planet’s most incredible waterfalls which extend over almost five kilometres and stretch across parts of Brazil and Argentina. 4. Explore Recoleta Cemetery, a historical burial ground where you will find magnificent tombs and the final resting place of Evita Peron. 5. Whether you watch or join in with the dancing, you will find it hard to resist the seductive tango once the spirit of Buenos Aires has washed over you.

Iguazu Falls Buenos Aires Argentina is made up of dynamic cities that overflow with cultural heritage and areas of natural beauty. Buenos Aires, the country’s capital, is seriously alluring with its intriguing contrasts of old and new. And, of course, Iguazu Falls is one of the most incredible spectacles, not only here, but in the whole of the world. Wherever you choose to visit, this country will leave a lasting impression. There is something quite compelling about this Latin American country. Perhaps it’s the passion of the people that pervades the air, the natural wonders that lurk around corners, or it could be the diverse culture. Most likely it’s the combination of all these assets that gives Buenos Aires its distinctive personality. A landscape that fuses the cool city, snow-dusted peaks and the Pampa flatlands certainly puts this capital into a league of its own. With the impressive Iguazu Falls and the majestic Andes in its midst, this really is a place that inspires and enchants. Questionably most known for being the origin of the tango – an intense dance of passion – it is also noted for its music, arts and football. The culture here is exciting, and the lively nightlife lures you in with its upbeat music. There are endless bars, clubs and cafes where you can dance and inhale the buzz of the city. And shopaholics will be in their element exploring the designer boutiques and contemporary shopping centres. The food in Buenos Aires is as diverse as its landscape, bringing a wide range of international flavours to the table, as well as more traditional dishes such as fish, pasta and patties.

Just the acoustics of these powerful waterfalls will jostle your senses. Iguazu Falls reach into Brazil and Argentina, plummeting over the Parana Plateau into the river below and the deep chasm of Devil’s Throat. The falls make up Iguazu National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the falls themselves are inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Not surprisingly, they have also been chosen as one of the New7Wonders of Nature. Protruding ledges are the cause of huge water sprays, which form heavenly rainbows that arch across the falls. This magnificent natural phenomenon is made up of a mind-blowing 275 individual falls and is almost five kilometres wide and 90 metres high. This makes Iguazu Falls wider than Victoria and higher than Niagara, which is no mean feat. There are a number of walks that lead you to vantage points where you can witness the magnitude of the waterfalls, one of the greatest and most powerful shows on Earth. It is often said that Argentina hosts the performance whilst Brazil enjoys the views. Being located within a subtropical rainforest, Iguazu Falls are surrounded by a fantastic array of wildlife. Over 2,000 species of plants and 400 species of birds can be found here, as well as endangered species such as South American tapirs, jaguars, ocelots and anteaters.

Patagonia Located between Chile and Argentina on the southern tip of South America, Patagonia is renowned for its wild landscape, which comprises Andean peaks, steppes, grasslands and deserts.

Ushuaia Known as the End of the World owing to its southerly location, Ushuaia is the gateway to Antarctica and the capital of Tierra del Fuego.

Falkland Islands These rural islands that rise from the South Atlantic Ocean are populated by seals, sea birds and five species of penguin. Its unpolluted air, vast blue skies and white beaches make it a sublime place to relax.

Montevideo

Things to do in Montevideo

URUGUAY

1. Plaza Independencia is a must see for any visitor. Right in the heart of the town, this central square is home to significant buildings such as the Solis Theatre, Palacio Salvo and the Artigas mausoleum. 2. Embark on a tour of the local wineries and sample some of the country’s famous red wines, which are produced from tannat grapes. 3. Take the elevator to the top of the city’s tallest building, Torre Antel, for fantastic views that stretch for as far as the eye can see.

Tucked between Argentina and Brazil, Uruguay is the second smallest country in South America. It has a rich agricultural and civic heritage, with a long history of British influence. In more recent years, this feisty underdog has climbed its way up the ranks to gain the respect it deserves. Combining picturesque scenery of idyllic shorelines, hot springs and historic old towns, Uruguay has successfully retained its natural beauty and cultural traditions. For such a small country, it really does pack a punch. Uruguay is considered an affluent place, with a laid back atmosphere and friendly people; a sure sign that they are enjoying the good life.

4. Walk along La Rambla, the strip that runs along the coast of Montevideo, and enjoy sublime views of the Atlantic Ocean. 5. Explore the Museo Historico Nacional and learn about the fascinating history and culture of Uruguay that have shaped the future of the country.

Montevideo The fitting, cosmopolitan capital of Montevideo equals the charm of Uruguay with its somewhat cool reputation, swanky shops and Art Deco buildings. Downtown, neo-classical buildings compete with giant skyscrapers. Then there’s the leafy plazas and the scenic riverside promenades where it’s so easy to while away the hours. The fabulous architecture is dotted around and is definitely worth a look, including the striking Palacio Salvo, and mansions and churches that date back to the 18th century. But its varied landscape is also blessed with sleepy fishing villages, thermal baths and wonderful wildlife that can be spotted along the coast. Montevideo also has a thriving arts scene, where you can visit local tango bars or the theatre to get a taste of its international culture.

Punte del Este Known for its beaches, yachts, restaurants and lively nightlife, Punte del Este is often referred to as the Monaco of South America. Casa-Pueblo museum is worth a visit if not just to see its surrealistic architecture. Punte del Este

Santiago

Things to do in Santiago

CHILE This long, narrow country lies between the Andes Mountains and the Pacific Ocean on the south west coast of South America. It boasts a richly diverse landscape of forests, lakes, volcanoes and desert, which happens to be the driest and highest on Earth. As you would expect from a country with so much natural beauty, Chile is swathed in fascinating legends. The Chileans are friendly and passionate about their country, continually striving to preserve their traditions and history. With such staggeringly beautiful landscapes surrounding them, it’s no wonder they have such a contagious spirit.

1. Located in downtown Santiago, the neo-classical Palacio de La Moneda is the city’s presidential palace and one of the most notable landmarks in the country. Take a tour through the history of this UNESCO World Heritage centre. 2. Enjoy the market at Barrio Bellas Artes and Parque Forestal, where there is a lively atmosphere with music, dancing and street entertainment. 3. Museo Bellas Artes is the city’s greatest museum, housing contemporary and fine art collections. The building itself blends a combination of architectural styles, including Art Nouveau, Baroque Revival and neoclassical Second Empire. 5. Immerse yourself in the culture of Barrio Bellavista, a flamboyant and bohemian area filled with bars, restaurants, galleries and bouiques.

Punta Arenas

Santiago There are countless highlights of Chile, but the capital Santiago is a must-see city when exploring the country. This vibrant heart is filled with museums, shops and restaurants, yet there are many green spaces where you can escape and enjoy views of the Andean backdrop. Valparaiso is Latin America’s most unique city, fusing Bohemian culture, colourful buildings and coastal views. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003 and has become a go-to destination for travellers with a thirst for something out of the ordinary. If you don’t fancy taking a ride in the city’s oldest elevator, you could climb the hill to La Sebastiana - once home to artist Pablo Neruda - and experience some of the best views across the city. Alternatively, visit the wonderfully mysterious Easter Island and see the giant statues that are carved out of volcanic rock. Situated on the south east of the Pacific Ocean, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is shrouded in mystery. It is unknown how the inhabitants of the island managed to move such huge rocks around, or indeed why. Whatever you choose to do, this land of extremes plays the perfect host. With so many sights to explore, adventures to be had and scenery to enjoy, there’s a good chance you will fall in love with Chile.

Hike to Inca Bridge from Machu Picchu and discover the beautiful, tropical wildlife. Part of the path leading to the bridge has been carved into the cliff side.

Lying on the central west coast of South America, Peru is bordered by Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil, Bolivia and Chile, so it’s no surprise that it has a complex cultural diversity. And its scenery is just as varied, from the awesome peaks of the Andes to the depths of the Amazon rainforest. Peru’s wildlife is enthralling, with jaguars, caimans and macaws occupying the landscape.

5. Visit Intihuatana, the carved rock pillar, which was used to predict the solstices by the Inca astronomers.

With its roots firmly planted in the Inca Empire, Peru is famous for its spectacular archaeological gems. A trip to Peru wouldn’t be complete without a pilgrimage along the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu and Cusco, where you can witness its 5,000 year old history. Although Machu Picchu is one of the greatest treasures, there are countless more sites to discover where you can uncover lost civilisations on some of the most spellbinding journeys in the world. Standing at an incredible elevation of 11,200 feet, Cusco is considered to be the gateway to Machu Picchu. Packed with cosmopolitan charm, the city is a melting pot of culture and history and a recommended destination to visit. Although many travellers flock to Peru for their next big adventure, that isn’t to say you can’t enjoy a more relaxing trip. There are lots of opportunities for spotting wildlife or simply soaking up the Peruvian culture. The country is famed for its culinary experiences, with its offering of gourmet restaurants where visitors with an inquisitive appetite can sample exotic South American flavours.

GALAPAGOS Comprising 19 islands that lie within the Pacific Ocean, this archipelago makes up part of the Galapagos National Park and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage centre. Being so remote from the mainland, isolated for millions of years, the animals that live here have no natural fear of humans. It’s such a unique and mind-blowing experience walking among fantastical species that aren’t disturbed by your presence. Watching the giant tortoises roam freely while marine iguanas sunbathe on the black lave rocks is truly something else. Isla Santa Cruz is home to Charles Darwin’s Research Station just on the outskirts of Puerto Ayora, where you can delve deeper into the wonderful world of the island’s endangered species. There is a national park information centre and museum here so you can learn about the natural history of the islands with educational videos. You can also meet the giant tortoises face to face at the breeding house. Cruising is the only way to access many of the islands, where you can experience close encounters with the planet’s most fabulous creatures. This treasure trove of enchanted islands should feature on everyone’s bucket list. Because of their strong association here, the Galapagos tortoises gave their name to the islands. They are the largest of their kind in the world and can live up to 170 years old. There are believed to be only 15,000 left in existence today.

Galapagos giant tortoise

Marine iguanas are the most unusual of their species and the only remaining marine lizards on the planet. They are often grey and black, but in the mating season they display red and green colours. Galapagos finches played a significant part in the development of Darwin’s theory and are arguably the most illustrious birds on the islands. Galapagos penguins are among the smallest of their kind and they are unique to the northern side of the equator. The majority of these penguins live among Fernandina and Isabela islands. The Galapagos fur seal is the smallest of the fur seals and spends the majority of its time on land, often heard barking across the islands. The magnificent frigatebird is instantly recognisable by its red inflated throat used to attract the females. It can spend days in flight, covering almost 150 miles at a time.
