Borneo is the largest Asian island and is apportioned between Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei. Whilst many of the inhabitants of Borneo simply rely on farming as a way of life, there are still some nomadic tribal people who live a hunter-gatherer existence. These indigenous tribes still practice the ancient ways of living as they always have done in this remote and tangled jungle landscape, and visiting them is one of the most adventurous things you can do when visiting Borneo. If climbing mountains is more your thing, head to Mount Kinabalu National Park and attempt to reach the highest peak in Southeast Asia. Whatever you choose to do, Borneo offers a colourful paradise that combines relaxation and adventure encapsulated in striking scenery.

Kyoto Tokyo The capital of Japan, this huge, wealthy and fascinating metropolis brings a futuristic look at the world, side by side with glimpses of old Japan. Not very many people are aware, but Tokyo metropolis spans far wider than just the city. It reaches to the rugged mountains to the west and the subtropical islands to the south. Tokyo has flourished as the political, economic and cultural centre of Japan, and with a population of about 13 million, it certainly is one of the greatest metropolises in the world. It is easier to think of Tokyo as a collection of cities that have merged together, rather than one giant city. Each area is very distinct from the last, from the electronic and futuristic blare of Akihabara to the Imperial gardens and shrines of Chiyoda showing the old Japan. That is the beauty of this unique city – there are shrines and stone lanterns scattered among the skyscrapers and bright lights allowing you to experience the marvellous mix of modern living and old fashioned traditions. The biggest part of the Tokyo experience is wandering around and absorbing the ambience, don’t worry too much about seeing every inch and ticking attractions off a list as there is so much to do everywhere you go. The city can proudly boast that it has more Michelin stars than anywhere else in the world. The food is all fresh, rich and delightful, and the attention and precision that the Japanese bring to their food means that even the simplest meal is incredible.

It’s believed that Kyoto is home to over 1000 Buddhist temples. Kinkaku-ji, the famous Golden Pavilion, is one of the most notable sights and conceals fascinating tales of the past. There are endless discoveries to be made here; around every corner there is always something new waiting to surprise unsuspecting tourists. The lively centre is cocooned by mountainous scenery while locals sell a variety of goods in their speciality shops. Around the temples of Kyoto nestle some of the most heavenly gardens on Earth, including the Zen Ryoan-ji and Saiho-ji. Great Wall of China
Top 5 things to do in Beijing
Beijing With history that dates back three millennia, Beijing is sure to delight and intrigue travellers as they explore the ancient past and the modern development. The last of the Four Great Capitals of China, it has been the political and social centre of the country for the last eight centuries. It is not surprising that it is home to some of the finest remnants of China’s imperial past and overflows with a unique charm that beckons visitors from around the world. Nowadays, it boasts colourful districts that mix historic buildings with contemporary designs to create a city that is as complex and compelling as its past.
CHINA Great Wall of China One of the greatest wonders of the world and stretching 13,171 miles is the Great Wall of China. Far more than a triumph of engineering, it is a direct link to China’s imperial past and the legendary emperors that ruled here. It reflects ancient Chinese culture and has long been part of Chinese mythology and symbolism. The wall runs from east to west across the historical northern borders of China and was built to protect the Chinese Empire against invaders and intrusions. It began as many independent walls for different states and did not become the Great Wall that we know today until the Ming Dynasty, when Emperor Qin Shi Huang had the wall joined together to fend off the Huns in the north. The most famous section of the wall was built between 220 and 206 BC by the first Emperor of China Qin Shi Huang. Little of this wall remains, and the whole of the Great Wall has been rebuilt, maintained and enhanced, with the majority coming from the Ming Dynasty. Made of stone, brick and tamped earth, construction relied heavily on local resources, and a great army of soldiers, prisoners and local people were involved with the building. The result demonstrates the wisdom and tenacity of the Chinese people. It reflects the collision between civilisations in ancient China and provides significant evidence of far sighted political thinking as well as an example of superb military architecture.
Part of the allure of Beijing is the well preserved historic culture, so people can see the history rather than just hear about it. Watching the day to day life unfold around one of the world’s richest and most complex historical background is an experience that will not be easily forgotten. It is a city for all seasons, and you will always find something to keep you occupied no matter what your tastes. There are hundreds of historical sites and landmarks that are located in and around the city, including the Temple of Heaven, the Summer Palace and the Great Wall of China. With its vibrant mix of modernity and tradition, it is easy to see why it is one of the most visited places in the world.
Shanghai The largest city in China and the world’s busiest container port, Shanghai is considered the ‘Oriental Paris’. For centuries it has been a major shipping and trading town, but grew in importance in the 19th century when it became one of only five ports to open trading to Europe. Since then, it has been constantly changing and expanding into the futuristic metropolitan city that we know today. Shanghai sits at the Yangtze River Delta and opens onto the East China Sea. It is divided by the Huangpu River (a man made tributary of the Yangtze) and has two main parts. The west side, or Puxi, is the larger of the two and is home to the older districts of Shanghai, and the east, or Pudong, which stretches towards the sea and is full of modern and new developments. Look one way and you will see visions of Shanghai’s future, the Jin Mao tower (currently the tallest in Shanghai) and the Oriental Pearl Tower. Look the other way and you will gaze into Shanghai’s past – it is a place where Western customs and Chinese traditions intertwine and create a truly memorable experience for those who visit. Considered the birthplace of everything modern in China, it has become a popular tourist destination that is famous for historical landmarks as well as an expanding skyline. Due to its short history, it doesn’t have as many cultural sights as some of the older cities in China, but there certainly is plenty to see and do in Shanghai.

1. Check out the three big imperial sites – the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace and the Temple of Heaven – for a stark contrast to the gleaming towers of the modern city. 2. An abundance of traditional Chinese massage parlours are a welcome sight to relax in after a long day exploring. 3. Make sure you find out where there are Beijing acrobats are performing, with intricate make-up, theatrics and shrill voices, it is not one to be missed. 4. Wander round the Hutongs, small public alleyways with private courtyard residences. They were made in the 13th century and haven’t changed since old Beijing. 5. Terracotta Warriors One of the most significant archaeological excavations of the 20th century, the Terracotta Warriors are a subterranean life-size army of thousands that have silently stood guard over the soul of China’s first Emperor for well over two millennia. Discovered in 1974 by local farmers in the Lintong District, Xi’an, this site has become so famous that many of its unusual attributes are known world wide, like the fact that no two soldiers’ faces are alike. The collection of terracotta sculptures depicts the armies of Qin Shi Huang, the first Emperor of China. It was a form of funeral art that was buried with the emperor in 210 BC, and was created mainly to protect the emperor in afterlife, a show of his glory and to remind people that the army triumphed over other warring states to unite China. The figures vary in height according to their roles within the army, the tallest being generals and the entire collection includes warriors, chariots and horses. Overall, there are three pits with 8,000 soldiers, 130 chariots with 520 horses and 120 cavalry horses. Originally, the soldiers would have held weapons and been painted in bright colours, which have inevitably rotted away or faded now. The intricate detail that went into these thousands of figures is amazing, with each individual having their own facial features, hairstyles and tread on their footwear.
Yangtze River The longest river in Asia and the third longest in the world, the Yangtze River runs from the glaciers on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau right through to the East China Sea. Winding about 3,964 miles, it is the largest water system in China and is historically, economically and culturally important to the country. The Yangtze River scenery is rich and breathtaking, from the remote mountains it meanders through canyon gorges right through to the fertile regions of connecting lakes and waterways.

Da Nang (Hue), Vietnam
Hong Kong
One of the major port cities, and the biggest city on the South Central Coast of Vietnam, nowhere is changing as fast as Da Nang. A city often overlooked by tourists, it is home to some of the most beautiful and isolated beaches, as well as some of the friendliest people. An intoxicating mix of non-stop city life and tranquil golden beaches, Da Nang brings the best of both worlds without the touristy aspect often found in large cities.
Ho Chi Minh (Phu My), Vietnam Ho Chi Minh
Singapore
Vietnam at its most exciting, Ho Chi Minh is the centre of commerce and culture that has driven the whole country forward with its pulsating energy. Once dearly called ‘the Diamond of the Far East’, it has managed to incorporate modernity without losing traditional Vietnamese traits. You will now see modern skyscrapers amidst pagodas, and food stalls along the street. Rapidly modernising with an atmosphere unlike anywhere else, a trip to this chaotic but charming city is not to be missed.

You will begin the cruise with a two night stay in Singapore following a direct flight from the UK, allowing you to explore this gorgeous landscape populated by high rise buildings and luscious greenery before embarking on your journey.
Muara, Brunei Located in the Brunei and Maura district, there are few attractions save for the stunning Muara Beach. Miles of white sandy beaches lie next to the warmest sea water you will ever encounter.

Bangkok
Singapore
The capital city of Sabah, this destination is growing in popularity due to its close proximity to the tropical islands, lush rainforests and Mount Kinabalu. There are few places of historical interest due to the damage caused during World War II, which left only three buildings standing, but this doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty to see and do once you get here.

Tokyo
Seoul is the capital and the largest metropolis of South Korea. From the ruins of the Korean War, Seoul has boomed in just 50 years to create this buzzing and energetic city that it is today. It has an interesting balance of modern and traditional compared to other Asian cities; there aren’t many places where you would find a royal palace that is hundreds of years old sat next to ultra-modern skyscrapers.
Kyoto (Kobe), Japan Kyoto was the capital of Japan for over a millennium, and carries the high reputation as its most beautiful city. Most first impressions will be of the urban sprawl of the centre, but if you persist, you will soon discover Kyoto’s hidden beauty in the temples and parks – finding that there is much more to the city than meets the eye. It remains awash with remnants of its past glory and it even still has a working geisha district. Add to this the fact that it is home to some of Japan’s most exquisite cuisine, a visit here will be unforgettable.

Often overlooked by many travellers due to the lack of picturesque architecture or natural scenery, there are still so many reasons why more people should be heading here. Destroyed by World War II bombings and rebuilt rapidly, it has achieved so much in a short space of time. Due to its location during the Edo period, it became Japan’s rice-trade central. Since then, it has earned the name ‘the nation’s kitchen’ and has gained an excellent reputation as a foodie’s paradise. There are also gorgeous Japanese spas to unwind in and authentic museums, and Osaku is the birthplace of Bunraku, an ancient Japanese puppet theatre.

Ho Chi Minh (Phu My), Vietnam
What’s included:
Vietnam’s largest metropolis, Ho Chi Minh oozes youthful energy that is invigorating to witness. With quirky cafes, pioneering gastronomy and trendy boutiques, it has evolved into a dynamic urban area over the years. What makes it truly special, however, is that despite these dots of modernity, it has managed not to looe its traditional Vietnamese traits. Most of the fun of being in a city like Ho Chi Minh is to simply take in all that is going on around you rather than go looking for attractions - if you blink you will miss some amazing everyday sights.

UNITED ARAB EMIRATES Situated on the Arabian Peninsula on the Persian Gulf, the United Arab Emirates is made up of seven emirates, which include Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Muscat and Fujairah. The intriguing contrast of futuristic cities, traditional Arab houses and vast expanses of desert are quite unbelievable and make the United Arab Emirates a uniquely fascinating destination.
Muscat
Dubai
Nestled between mountains and the glittering Arabian Sea, Muscat (the capital of Oman) offers an authentic look at old fashioned life in Arabia.
One of the seven emirates that make up the United Arab Emirates, Dubai is certainly the most famous. Like nowhere else on earth and the fastest growing city in the world, it has taken 40 years for entrepreneurs to transform a sleepy fishing village into a glamorous, futuristic and mustsee urban destination.
Abu Dhabi The capital of the United Arab Emirates, Abu Dhabi is one of the most modern cities in the world and fast gaining a reputation as the heart of culture, sport and leisure.
Visiting Dubai for the first time is rather a surreal experience. From the sheer amount of glass and steel that soars up into the sky, to the point at which the vast desert meets the glittering Persian Gulf, there are so many awe-inspiring scenes to take in. Spectacular modern architecture dominates the skyline and leaves people speechless as they gaze on things such as the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world, or the impressive dancing fountains.
Khasab
Fujairah Separated from the rest of the United Arab Emirates by the Hajar Mountains, Fujairah is a bustling and energetic city on the east coast.
Fujairah
As well as the luxury and opulence that oozes from the western elements of this dynamic city, there are still the simple pleasures of Orient to be found. From the winding labyrinthine souks where you can test your haggling skills, and the old traditional Arabian houses that provide a stark contrast to the gleaming skyscrapers, to the magnificent sunset from the back of a camel whilst exploring the desert, Dubai is a city that will leave you speechless.

What’s included:
While it is no longer the country’s capital, Yangon still holds the title of the most commercial city, and the spiritual core, thanks to the Shwedagon Paya – the country’s oldest and most significant pagoda. The colonial buildings give the downtown a faded old charm that some cities in the Middle East will never be able to achieve, and the calm and laid back pace appeals to most travellers. Yangon is one of the most exotic of the Southeast Asian cities – most signs are written in the local script as opposed to changing them to English like many others. Prepare yourself for an authentic Burmese experience when you stop here.

BALI By just saying the name you conjure up images of paradise, so it is no surprise that Bali is one of the most desirable island destinations. This Indonesian paradise does not disappoint, blending spectacular mountain ranges and the famous pristine beaches with the welcoming locals and a lively traditional culture.
Bali The unique and spiritual culture that has left ancient temples dotted around ripe to explore is a breath of fresh air from the rest of Southeast Asia and the views are worth a visit alone, with jagged volcanoes, dramatic seaside cliffs and rice terraces spreading across the valleys in a never ending fashion. Add to that the jaw dropping sunsets and it is easy to see why it is on many people’s list of must-sees. Whatever your reason for visiting, you cannot deny that the first thought when thinking of Bali was the beaches. These world famous beaches stretch out for miles, from those with big volcanic rocks and coral covering them, to those entirely made up of glaring white or unusual black sand. Imagine lying in the warm sand, watching the crystal sea lap lazily against the shore and listening to the palm trees swaying in the breeze. Immerse yourself in the warm waters and unwind in this tropical paradise - there really is nowhere in the world quite as special.

One of an astounding 17,508 islands that make up the republic of Indonesia, Komodo Island is most famous for being the habitat of the Komodo Dragon, the largest lizard on earth. Due to their predatory nature, visitors are unable to get close to the lizards without a guide.
At the heart of the Great Barrier Reef, and part of the Whitsunday Islands, Hamilton Island is embraced by white beaches. Its excellent selection of bars, restaurants and water based activities make it a much sought-after destination and the perfect base for exploring the colourful kaleidoscope of marine life and coral.

Although the ships have excellent facilities, they successfully retain an intimate and relaxed atmosphere. Days at sea can be spent at the Canyon Ranch SpaClub, by the swimming pool or in the cocktail bar. Oceania Cruise vessels sail to many iconic destinations, including New York, Venice and Santorini, as well as visiting smaller ports of call off the beaten track. Laying claim to the finest dining experience at sea, Oceania has an esteemed reputation for its exceptional cuisine. With four speciality restaurants on-board each vessel, there is something for guests with even the most discerning palate.
But what also sets Regent apart is the abundance of free limited tours in virtually every port of call. With destinations such as Alaska, the Mediterranean and the Caribbean on the itineraries, the wealth of cultural diversity is quite overwhelming. Contemporary, onboard facilities have been designed with the sophisticated traveller in mind. As well as a casino, Canyon Ranch SpaClub and swimming pool, guests can indulge in fine dining, which showcases regional cuisine.

With faultless service, all inclusive cruising and outstanding facilities, the medium sized vessels of Crystal Cruise Lines offer a travel experience like no other, so it comes as no surprise that it has been voted the World’s Best for 19 consecutive years. Seabourn Seabourn’s philosophy is to enhance people’s lives through travel, which is evident on each of their vessels. Impeccable service, deluxe accommodation and life-changing destinations all combine to create an ultra-luxury cruise experience. Seabourn’s fleet accommodates no more than 458 guests so it can focus on providing a truly personal service. Seabourn sails to many diverse countries and continents such as the classical sites of Greece and Turkey, the Baltic Capitals and the icy desert of Antarctica. Onboard leisure facilities include a range of water based activities such as windsurfing, water skiing and sailing, but for something a little less energetic, the spa offers a variety of treatments and therapies, with complimentary Massage Moments on deck.
Silversea Covering every continent, Silversea prides itself on the broadly diverse destinations visited by its fleet. From the beating heart of Africa to the frozen realms of the Antarctic, there are countless experiences to be had. Silversea vessels are designed for exploration and their size enables them to reach harbours that are often inaccessible to larger cruise ships. Comprising of only suites, many of which have a private veranda, every guest can enjoy ocean views and the professional services of a butler. Sophisticated entertainment such as classical orchestras, live music and casinos keep guests occupied at sea. Dining on Silversea is an experience in itself; working closely with Grands Chers Relais and Chateaux, the food and service on-board is incomparable.
