NEWS New ships Seabourn Ovation In 2018, Seabourn will introduce Seabourn Ovation, a sister-ship to the already prestigious Seabourn Encore. Seabourn Ovation represents another welcome stage in the evolution of small-ship cruising, which Seabourn pioneered and has consistently expanded and enriched. Both ships deliver a wealth of new concepts, a fresh vision and a host of illuminating ideas to delight the world’s most discerning travellers. Designed by hospitality design icon Adam D. Tihany, Seabourn Ovation will feature modern design elements and innovations in keeping with Seabourn’s reputation for understated elegance. Like Seabourn Encore before it, the 40,350-GRT ship will be configured with one additional deck and newly expanded public areas, and will carry just 600 guests, based on double occupancy. In addition, every suite will feature a private veranda.

Silver Muse Silver Muse, delivered in spring of 2017, the new ultra-luxury ship was built by Fincantieri and at 40,700-GRT accommodates 596 guests. Representing an exciting evolution of Silver Spirit, Silver Muse redefines ultra-luxury ocean travel - enhancing the small-ship intimacy and spacious all-suite accommodations that are the hallmarks of the Silversea experience. The addition of Silver Muse expands Silversea’s fleet to nine ships, and once again significantly raises the bar in the ultra-luxury cruise market with a wealth of enhancements to the on-board experience, while satisfying the uncompromising requirements for comfort, service, and quality of the world’s most discerning travellers.

product forward with the launch of Muse and not forgetting the huge investment in the ‘Museification’ of their existing tonnage. Accommodation wise, even at the entry level, there is plenty of space with 389 sq ft, including the 64 sq ft balcony. The 1,500 sq ft Grand Suites are simply divine, decorated with a contemporary feel in tones of cream, green and saffron. Having sailed on Silversea in each of the last three years it’s the service that has really stood out to me. How does each barman know what drink you are about to order, even if you haven’t yet decided yourself? Seemingly every member of staff knows your name after just one conversation with them; these personal touches really do make you feel at home. The extensive refurbishment programme is only serving to improve the experience too – Silver Cloud is now the most spacious and comfortable ice class vessel in expedition cruising. Silver Explorer will welcome guests to a stylishly elevated on-board experience with new décor, redesigned bars and many new fixtures and fittings. All in all, Silversea comes highly recommended with Silver Muse in particular being one to try.

t appears like we are getting significant updates from cruise lines each week at the moment and Silversea is no exception. Having gone a number of years without adding to their ‘Classic’ fleet, last month they launched Silver Muse and a lot more besides. Three more Muse class ships are to be launched in 2020, 2021 and 2023 AND they are launching a $175m refurbishment programme of their existing ships. That’s a total investment of over $1 billion! I was very fortunate to meet the seemingly rejuvenated and excited Manfredi Lefebvre d’Ovidio, Chairman of Silversea Cruises, on-board Muse. He accurately described the ‘discreet elegance’ of Silversea’s new ship and went on to explain the concept of having no main dining room on-board, instead having eight different dining options to choose from. You can choose the formal setting of the Relais & Chateaux inspired La Dame, with its high-end French feel, or perhaps Kabuki, the Japanese restaurant with the theatrical Teppanyaki iron griddles where the chefs cook in front of you. More traditionally there is Atlantide, serving fish and steak dishes or if you just fancy a pizza one evening then Regina Margherita will do you very nicely. Indochine is Asian Fusion, Silver Note is where you can enjoy tapas whilst listening to live jazz, while La Terrazza and Hot Rocks complete the line-up of exceptionally good eateries. Other words used to describe Muse during my time on-board were contemporary, classy, simple and no-fuss. I can’t argue with these descriptions and would certainly agree that Silversea have really pushed their

Cultural cruising

Y

ears ago, it was enough for cruise lines to offer a compelling itinerary with a handful of exotic ports of call to attract prospective guests, but that is lame for today’s cruise passengers with inquiring minds. Eminent lecturers, themed voyages, and highprofile celebrity guests are quickly becoming the norm as travellers seek to make their time at sea all the more edifying. The concept of cultural cruising can trace its roots back to 1955 when Richard Kenneth Swan and his father chartered the elderly ship Aegaeon for cruises around archaeologically significant Greek Islands. High-brow cruising was successful in its simplicity: offer a genuine travel experience that visits historic ports where a variety of educational excursions are included in the price, combined with renowned on-board lecturers imparting their wisdom. After five decades of pioneering cultural cruising and having set new standards of creature comforts with a variety of ships that were received with mixed reaction by the ultra-loyal ‘Swanners’, the company went into administration in early 2017. The brand has been purchased by G Adventures and is slated to reappear next year.

12

With the greying of the baby-boomers a whole new generation are now seeking intellectual fulfilment. Vacationing with a purpose, as cruise lines call it, is one of the industry’s hottest trends and a host of larger cruise companies are now offering enrichment programmes where more challenging travel experiences are replacing the oft-perceived cruise pastime of staid inertia.

“Vacationing

with a purpose”

Diplomats and politicians give insight into world events, learned professors bring foreign cultures to life, and celebrated authors discuss their best-sellers, while scientists or explorers reveal the secrets of the natural world. Occasionally lectures turn out to be less of a genteel romp through history, more brain aerobics but they are always fascinating and many passengers find these presentations a truly rewarding experience.

Home vs. Away

C

ricket’s oldest rivalry is a feast for sports fans across the world. This legendary Test has thrilled and excited cricket devotees for almost 135 years, producing countless memories, heroes and even a few villains. The Ashes Series 2017-18 promises to be an unmissable Test, but the tests themselves aren’t the only thing we are looking forward to. 18

Australia means three things: incredible landscapes, endless sunshine and complete relaxation. Add cricket into the mix, and you have a match made in luxury cruising heaven. But is watching your favourite sporting event across the pond really worth the journey?

Home or away? Let’s see who comes out on top! The scenery: Away Our green and pleasant land is undeniably beautiful, but the beaches, vast outback and diverse landscapes of Australia are really something else. Imagine swimming in the azure blue waters of Perth’s Cottesloe Beach, SixStarCruises.co.uk

or admiring the stunning view from the top of Mount William in Victoria. And that is just the tip of the sand dune. Between test matches, you could also explore the rainforest of the Blue Mountains, explore the Gold Coast and meet the local wildlife on Kangaroo Island. Take your bucket list, because there is bound to be something to tick off.

We have many more cruise & cricket holidays available call 0800 980 6803 for more details

The weather: Away We Brits love talking about the weather. After all, the threat of rain is never far away. The famously sunny shores of Australia are, undoubtedly, the country’s main draw for fans of Ashes cricket. Taking place during the Australian summer, this year’s Test series will be soaked in heavenly sunshine. That means “Goodbye” umbrellas and emergency raincoats and “Hello!” shorts, ice-cold drinks and some much-needed Vitamin D.

The food: Home That might be two points for the ‘away’ side, but could the UK be about to bring it ‘home’? Australia may have gained a reputation for ‘clean eating’ and artisan coffee, but you can’t beat a traditional portion of Great British fish and chips. Then there is Sunday roast, pie and peas and, of course, Cricket Tea: a feast of fresh sandwiches, fluffy cakes, fruit squash and copious amounts of tea.

The activities: Away This is a clear win for the Aussies. From surfing at Bondi Beach and scuba diving on the Great Barrier Reef, to climbing the heights of Sydney Harbour Bridge, we could fill a whole magazine with the activities you can experience in Australia.

Here are some highlights: • A hot air balloon ride and champagne breakfast over Yarra Valley. • An Adelaide city tour and river cruise taking in the picturesque food and wine capital. • Tree-top walking through the canopy of the Valley of the Giants. • Wine tasting in the breath-taking Margaret River region. • A New Year’s Eve helicopter ride over Sydney as the sun sets.

The relaxation: Away One of the beach capitals of the world, Australia is a clear winner when it comes to relaxation. There is nothing like stretching out on the sand after taking in an Ashes test, with birds singing in the background and waves hushing against the shore. In fact, the Australian lifestyle is so laid back that you’ll feel like a new traveller just by strolling along the sea front. The adverts are right: there is only one Australia. And in our opinion, there is only one Ashes winner. Can Joe Root hold onto the fabled urn come November? We have no doubt!

The Land of the Rising Sun Half a world away sits an intoxicating landscape alive with natural wonders, dynamic cities and fantastical legends. We are, of course, talking about Japan: land of temples, Samurai and dragons. The Land of the Rising Sun is home to mysterious fairy-tale landscapes taking pride of place on many cruisers’ bucket lists. It was only a matter of time before Regent Seven Seas launched an itinerary that takes in some of the country’s most spectacular sights. The luxury cruise line’s Tokyo round-trip will transport passengers from the futuristic capital to South Korea and back again, exploring picturesque beauty spots and tranquil villages along the way. Tokyo’s neon-soaked streets and mind-blowing restaurants sit against the iconic backdrop of Mount Fuji: your first taste of how Japan’s metropolitan and natural landscapes manage to work in perfect harmony. The cruise continues to the likes of Kyoto, Kochi, Hososhima and Kagoshima, before heading to Jeju Island and Seoul. It is an itinerary that gets right to the heart of each destination, offering authentic insights into a famously vibrant and enchanting country. Passengers will even have the chance to visit Hiroshima: a humbling port that will stay with you forever. Cruises are changing, and personally, we can’t wait to discover what lies beyond the horizon. Exploration and authenticity are top of the agenda, offering cruise experiences that will stay with you forever.

or many people, sea cruises are a long day’s journey into dinner, undoubtedly the main event of the day. As mealtimes roll relentlessly past, the captain has the good grace to deliver a number of countries to the side of the ship. With justifiable reason most cruise companies boast about their cuisine, and it’s not just ultra-luxury ships that cook up superlatives when referring to their gastronomy – most premium cruise lines have a variety of speciality restaurants where dining pleasures are writ large.

t’s time to cross Cuba off the travel wish list as an increasing number of luxury cruise lines are now offering dedicated sailings to this once ‘forbidden fruit’. Several upmarket cruise lines are also including calls at the Spanish colonial gem of Havana in their Caribbean itineraries for the first time in over fifty years. Imbued with a profound sense of culture and history, Cuba overflows with opportunities for authentic encounters and unforgettable experiences. Havana is the door to Cuba’s soul and is completely captivating with its larger-thanlife culture, sultry rhythms and weathered beauty. Take a relaxing stroll along the evocative Malecón, the quintessentially Cuban thoroughfare and get lost among the Baroque façades and colonial cobblestone alleyways of Old Havana. Visit the grandiose Capitolio Nacional and explore the world-class Cuban art collection at Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, which showcases everything from colonial-era paintings to countless masterpieces from Cuba’s famed Vanguard Period. Excursions visit Havana’s venerable old cigar factories for an insider’s perspective on the centuries-old process of artisanal cigar-rolling methods at the birthplace of these world-famous cigars. Tours also head into the lush Viñales Valley, famous for its tobacco and limestone formations known as mogotes; or an evening of sensuous Cuban music at a legendary club. Situated in a sublime bay on Cuba’s southern

coast, charming Cienfuegos enjoys a tranquil seaside setting and neoclassical architecture. Known as La Perla del Sur (the Pearl of the South), Cienfuegos was originally founded by French settlers and its historic city centre is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Here there’s the chance to wander past wellpreserved 19th century structures, or sip rum in gorgeous plazas whose layout was inspired by the Spanish Enlightenment. The cultural epicentre of Santiago de Cuba is the country’s second largest city and has played an instrumental role in the evolution of Cuban music, literature and architecture. Wedged between the looming Sierra Maestra mountain range and the aquamarine Caribbean Sea, the city offers a plethora of rich heritage and cultural diversions amidst a dramatic backdrop. The boutique cruise line Azamara Club Cruises® is well known for its destination-immersive voyages allowing guests to stay longer and experience more. Not surprisingly they are at the forefront of luxury American cruise lines visiting Havana. The 686-passenger Azamara Quest® will undertake a 7-night ‘Havana Discovery’ voyage from Miami on 20th November 2017 calling at Key West, Havana (overnight) and Cozumel. 2017. Azamara has developed a variety of unique land programmes to bring guests true ‘Destination Immersion’. By spending a longer amount of time in port, including staying overnight, guests can enjoy a deeper travel experience. In Havana these dedicated tours include ‘Hemingway’s Havana’ – an exploration of the literary connections between Cuba and novelist Ernest Hemingway to see where he lived, fished, dined and sipped his favourite cocktails. Other excursions head to Havana Viejo, the old city centre which overflows with timeworn fortresses, government buildings, historic squares, notable cemeteries and artisan markets. Highly-rated Oceania Cruises has recently added six sailings to Cuba aboard the 684-passenger Insignia. These are of varying durations of 6-, 7-, 10-, and 13-nights in November and December 2017. The company has also added calls to Havana on four sailings aboard the 684-passenger Regatta in March, May, September and October 2018. This is in addition to ten new Journeys to Cuba that are an exciting element of the company’s litany of Caribbean sailings between April and December 2018. These round-trip cruises from Miami range in length from 7- to 10-nights. They all include calls in Havana and on some sailings visits are made to the storied destinations of Cienfuegos, and Santiago de Cuba. Following two sell-out cruises in April, ultraluxury Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ 700-passenger Mariner is making a return to Havana (subject to Government approval) during a 22-night cruise from Miami to Honolulu departing on 10th October 2018. This cruise line is at the vanguard of all-inclusive cruising and offers the last word in stylish living. Just 90 miles from the United States, the largest island in the Caribbean boasts powdery white beaches, fascinating history and some of the liveliest people you’ll ever meet. The unique capital of Havana exudes history and energy in equal measure and is now staking pole position on cruiser’s desideratum. Gary Buchanan©
