INITIAL IMPRESSIONS After having driven a few hours down to Southampton, we were eager to get on-board Azamara Pursuit and explore. Embarkation was very quick and easy, we were welcomed with a glass of champagne and guided to our room by members of friendly staff along the way. The decor on-board is modern and contemporary, with a luxurious dark wood
well as fresh omelettes to order. The variety of food was fantastic, meaning that there was something for everyone to start their day off with. We would have loved to have dined in the Prime C speciality restaurant, but this was fully booked once we got on-board. Instead, we ate in the Discoveries Restaurant which was just as enjoyable. Friendly staff greeted us at the door, took our drinks and showed us to our table, offering us more drinks as soon as we sat down. Fresh bread was served while we waited for our food, with both starters and appetisers a good size to enjoy before our main meal. SILVER EXPLORER EXPEDITION
In the wake of the cruise line’s 10th anniversary, Silversea Expeditions are an enthralling and enriching cruise experience like no other. Join two members of our SixStarCruises Cruise Concierge team, as they experience Silver Explorer for themselves.
LIFE ON-BOARD During our time on-board Silver Explorer we sailed from Colon, Panama to Guayaquil, Ecuador. This included a number of excursions and experiences that were unforgettable and the ship experience in itself was incredible, we really couldn’t fault it! The excursions are all led in small groups, which allows you more time to explore and ask questions to your guides who are incredibly educated on the regions and activities you take part in. Some of the main expeditions that we took part of involved meeting local tribes and experiencing parts of the world that most cruise lines would never explore. Possibly one of the best experiences on-board was the Darien Jungle excursion in Colombia. Here, we sailed in canoes along the mangrove rivers to the local tribes’ home. We were met with their traditional dance and lots of children in authentic dress with body paint on. This experience in itself is unbelievable, as less than 1,000 people are able to visit the tribe each year. Another experience was the Isla de Plata, where we witnessed blue-footed boobies in their colonies. The region is part of Machalilla Park – Ecuador’s only national coastal park – and takes around an hour to reach via boat. The birds are friendly and you can walk right up to them – making for excellent photo opportunities. Other wildlife here also includes colourful fish, sea turtles and other birds.

FINAL VERDICT
INITIAL IMPRESSIONS The embarkation process was very smooth, with the whole process taking about 45 minutes from arriving to departing. Upon arrival, we received welcome drinks and pastries in the main lounge. When on-board, you can see the decor of the ship is traditional and classic, with a subtle touch of elegance and plenty of modern art pieces. You could certainly tell that the ship had been refurbished in 2016.
The ship was nice, elegant and beautifully understated, with furnishings to the highest standard. The speciality restaurants were all equally gorgeous, with Red Ginger a particular highlight that we would have loved to try. The atmosphere on-board is relaxed and serene, with the service second-to-none and plenty of space. Anyone who enjoys fine wine and good service would enjoy this ship!

Don’t miss our Luxury Cruise Sale - Book by 31ST January 2019
SixStarCruises.co.uk
June 2018 saw Silversea Expeditions celebrate ten years of offering their uniquely immersive expedition sailings. Since launching its first ship in 2008 and becoming the world’s first luxury cruise line to offer expedition voyages, Silversea have established a trend of ultraluxury which continues to surpass and develop to continually enrich guest experience and environmental change.
A MOMENTOUS MILESTONE
Silversea celebrated the occasion with a two-day gala voyage, during which it left London Tower Bridge – a testament to the initial sailing of Prince Albert II’s inaugural expedition voyage inaugural expedition voyage in 2008, which symbolised which symbolised a new age of expedition cruising. It was Silversea Expeditions’ Chairman, Manfredi Lefebvre d’Ovidio, who launched the expeditions arm of the business with a desire to create the world’s first luxury expedition cruise line. Speaking on the anniversary, he said:
A decade ago, we set out to unlock the world’s most authentic travelling experiences for those with a sense of curiosity. In superlative comfort, we have enabled our expedition guests to enjoy the planet’s remotest, most beautiful destinations – many of which were previously unvisited by any cruise line. Whether visited by land or sea, there exists an endless number of stunning places to explore. I look forward to discovering these destinations with our guests in the future. Since 2008, Silversea Expedition’s cruise fleet has grown to a feature four stunning ships, Prince Albert II was renamed Silver Explorer and Silver Galapagos, Silver Discoverer and Silver Cloud were all acquired over a four-year period.
ONE PORT AHEAD
Silversea has consistently remained at the forefront of the expedition cruise trend, not only with luxury cruise expedition sailings but also with their relationships alongside environmental and academic organisations. The first partnership for Silversea Expeditions was the Royal Geographical Society in 2013 to help enrich guests’ experience during expeditions. In the following year, Silversea also became the first company to bring an ultra-luxury product to the Galapagos Islands, where they trained up local guides to combine their expert knowledge of the Galapagos Call 0808 278 6157 to speak to our expert Cruise Concierge
with Silversea’s high-quality service.
Other partnerships include: Working alongside research and conservation agencies in the Cook Islands and Phoenix Islands, with Silversea conducting the first marine mammal acoustic survey which was attended by the Prime Minister of the Cook Islands and resulted in three new species being added to the national registry. Partnership with Dr. Galdikas and Camp Leakey which offered unique access to the orangutan rehabilitation centre. Ernest Shackleton Expedition in partnership with the Royal Geographic Society. Partnership with ORCA – a whale and dolphin protection charity – to benefit conservation efforts and enrich the experience for guests as they participate in a Citizen Science Project. Through the cruise line itself, Silversea also introduced the Expedition Leadership Training Academy, which recruits and develops talented expedition experts. The Explorer’s Collection was also launched in 2018, which offers itineraries following the footsteps previously taken by famous expedition leaders of the past. Silversea Expeditions now boasts the highest expedition team to guests ratio in the industry, with the Expedition Leader and Captain working together to ensure the best possible opportunities for adventure and exploration.
REACHING NEW DESTINATIONS FIRST
Each new destination is individually scouted by Silversea’s team of experts, often taking a number of years and analysis to ensure guest safety and comfort, as well as the potential for an enriching travel experience. During these scouts, Silversea became the first to launch itineraries to the Russian Arctic and West Coast of Africa. Silver Explorer was one of the only ships to successfully navigate through the Northwest Passage in 2014, with here and Kimberly in Australia added to the expedition itineraries in the same year. More recently, Silversea also added Bangladesh to its list of destinations – a world first for the cruising industry. What better way to celebrate ten years of Silversea Expeditions than enjoying a sailing yourself?

situated in India, offering the perfect introduction to three of the region’s top destinations: Jaipur, Delhi and Agra. This particular tour is included in a number of SixStarCruises’ luxury cruise and stay packages, as it is the perfect pairing with a cruise to the Middle East and Asia regions. The Golden Triangle explores the history and splendour across this fascinating region, including a number of unforgettable experiences and highlights. Typically, the tour starts in Delhi, followed by Agra and Jaipur – though this can be done in reverse. Throughout the tour, you will enjoy luxury 5* accommodation including breakfast in hotels such as the Sheraton New Delhi or the Rajputana in Jaipur.

What does the typical Golden Triangle itinerary entail? DELHI After flying to Delhi, you are transferred to your accommodation from which you will enjoy excursions to the city and landmarks such as the Jama Masjid Mosque; Ghandi’s cremation site, Raj Ghat; the Red Fort; and the narrow lanes of Chandni Chowk. You will then stay another night at your hotel before continuing on to Agra.
AGRA
For a slice of military history, visit the Agra Fort which was previously a strategic point and royal residence in 1654. This red sandstone structure is now one of India’s most significant Mughal forts and the first monument in India to be declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with four generations of influential Mughal emperors having ruled from here. Once your reach Jaipur, there is plenty more to see – starting with the Birla Temple situated at the foot of the Moti Dungri fort. Its unique structure is constructed in white marble, with three domes representing the three religions of India. Another landmark is the Hawa Mahal, a five-storied

cruising world due to its wealth of natural attractions, which are often combined with cruises to Norway, the Shetland Islands and the Faroes. Greenland, another relatively unexplored and unspoilt gem that is home to tiny fishing communities and Inuit tribes that have lived here for generations, may also appear on cruises that combine it with Iceland and, in some cases, Spitsbergen. More in-depth expedition cruises along Greenland’s coast tend to depart the Danish territory’s main gateway of Kangerlussuaq, while some sailings head west into Canada’s high Arctic territories.
WHEN TO GO The summer is naturally the peak time for Written by Sara Macefield Sailing to the top of the world to discover isolated landscapes where polar bears roam is one of the ultimate thrills of luxury cruises into the Arctic Circle. Yet this isn’t just the icy realm of the so-called Kings of the Arctic, but an unforgettable setting of snow-covered fjords, vertiginous cliffs teeming with seabirds, and vast glaciers that form a spectacular backdrop to the icy seascape where whales, walruses and seals exist in abundance. At the heart of the Arctic lies the Svalbard Archipelago – a cluster of islands belonging to Norway which are actually closer to the North Pole than they are to their mother country. The main island, Spitsbergen, is the jumpingoff point for many an Arctic sailing, though more intrepid types can travel further afield to sail to the North Pole or follow the path of adventurers through the fabled Northwest Passage that runs along the top of Canada. There are even voyages along the Northeast Passage that follow Russia’s remote Siberian coastline – a route full of pristine landscapes, bountiful wildlife, indigenous tribes and natural phenomena – ingredients that give the Arctic its unique appeal. But another strength is the Arctic’s proximity to Europe that makes it more accessible than other wilderness areas. As growing numbers of travellers tick off bucket list experiences, there is an everincreasing selection of sailings to cater for them, from luxury ships to hardcore expeditionary vessels.

Stargazing
T HE BEST CRUISES FOR
A cruise offers a number of opportunities to enjoy some of the best stargazing moments as you’re often far away from artificial light.
Arctic offers some of the most phenomenal night skies in the world. Winter is the perfect time to visit, with the icy temperatures and seemingly endless nights creating perfect conditions to witness constellations.
Some cruise lines even offer specialist sailings dedicated to astronomy and constellations, meaning they can be a great way to learn more about space and the night sky.
However, the Arctic is great to visit all yearround as it offers plenty to see during your time cruising here. Early spring is best for viewing the seasonal constellations from the Arctic Circle including Cancer, while autumn is better for Pegasus and Andromeda.

TOP TIPS FOR STARGAZING WHILE CRUISING • Try to plan your cruise around the lunar cycle, mainly to coincide with the new moon heat and smog commonly found in urban spaces. Sailings here often spend a few days in the region, providing ample opportunity to witness all you can while visiting. You will also visit other remote locations such as the Falkland Islands in the Scotia Sea.
AFRICA
so it can’t be seen as much at night. This is the darkest time of the lunar cycle and offers more opportunity to witness the stars at night. • Choose a sailing during the region’s dry season and there will be fewer clouds at night offering better views of the stars and a more pleasant time out on deck.

countries meaning minimal light pollution. From here, the Milky Way and Magellanic Clouds are truly spectacular.
TH E C A N A RY ISLANDS The Canary Islands are home to three official Starlight Reserves. These reserves ensure that the clarity of the night sky remains protected by laws relating to light, radio waves and atmospheric pollution, as well as flight patterns. The winds and the temperature inversion which they generate mean that clouds cannot form the same, leaving clear night skies for you to enjoy.
• Take a star chart or astronomy book with you, as well as binoculars. A good book can help you understand more about the sky, as well as showing the position of planets, stargazing tips and information on the constellations, while binoculars are perfect for bringing objects into focus and offering a wider field of view. • Book a cruise with resident astronomers on-board. Look out for guest speakers such as astronomy lecturers who offer expert insight into stargazing, and sometimes lead stargazing sessions on-board.
There are plenty of cruises available to these destinations at SixStarCruises.co.uk, ranging from those on the coastline of Africa to the endless night skies of the Arctic.

First noted as an up-and-coming trend, expedition cruising is now the trendsetter. With Zodiac excursions, sailings to untouched shores and adventures around every bend – expedition cruising has pioneered a shift in the cruising industry. With such a change and sudden growth, it seems more and more cruisers are longing for bucket-list getaways and adventurous escapes. One of the first cruise lines to offer these cruises was Silversea – with expeditions to far-flung shores you could only dream of. Contributing her insight on the matter is Regional Sales Manager for Silversea
interested in getting first hand experience of the destinations they would have never considered travelling to before because of the lack of the level of accommodation and services they are accustomed to. Silversea Expeditions pioneered expedition cruising in luxury and the growth in the industry shows we are on the right track. Our newest addition to expeditions fleet, Silver Cloud, is incredibly successful since we relaunched her in November, 2017 and tends to attract clientele who would have traditionally avoided expedition cruising due to the lack of the amenities, dining options, space onboard more basic expedition vessels.
Expeditions, Akvile Morazaite, who holds years of experience into the world of expedition cruising.
What is driving the demand for expedition cruises? AM: In my opinion, the popularity of expedition cruising goes hand in hand with shifting trends in travel in general: people are becoming more adventurous and seek more authentic experiences. TV shows such as Blue Planet II and Planet Earth have put some of the iconic expedition cruising destinations on the map, growing awareness of climate change, concerns about the environment and wildlife, more information available via media – TV, documentaries, print publications – all had a favorable effect on expedition cruising industry, which has always been an advocate of sustainable tourism with an emphasis of inspiring people to protect fragile environments the ships visit through direct experience and educational element of these trips.
What about luxury cruising and expeditions? AM: Talking about expedition cruising in luxury, here again you can see the trend similar to what some hotels defined as ‘luxploration’ – a modern luxury traveler is more and more
Which are the most popular expedition destinations? AM: Beside the iconic expedition cruising destinations such as Antarctica, Arctic, and the Galapagos, we are seeing more bookings for our South America program. Both Silver Explorer and Silver Cloud offer a number of voyages going along the west coast of South America, with such highlights as Chilean Fjords and Patagonia, marine wildlife along Chilean And Peruvian Coasts, a visit to Atacama desert, Darien Jungle and so on.
What does 2019 hold in store for Silversea Expeditions? AM: In 2019, Silver Explorer will offer for a very first time North East Passage – an incredibly exciting voyage for ‘bucket-list’ seekers – there are only a handful of people who have completed the passage and it is promising to be an exceptional trip in the remote part of the world.
