AARHUS, A CITY ON THE VERGE OF TRANSITION
A
arhus is a city on the verge of big-scale transformation. It’s the second biggest city of Denmark and is known for its important harbor economy. Aarhus is one of the commercial high-growth regions in Scandinavia and over the next 10-15 years, approximately 800 000m² of floorage will be constructed for residential and commercial purposes and for public institutions. In between the Baltic sea and the stoney city, huge flat artificial lobes provide space for industry. The Northern Docklands are now undergoing a major transformation. An ambitious masterplan provides a spatial frame for big-scale buildings of mixed use and the current industrial activities will seize and be relocated. The northern cove of the harbor lobe houses an important sailing harbor. The V-shaped bay has sailing (and on smaller scale fishing) functions. The sailingboat area can thus be seen as a visual connection between the natural border of the mainland and the to-be transformed docks. How will the harbor be able to remain its traditional dynamics and provide an effective working for its users? Can the implementation of a landmark sailing hub structure prevent the harbor from being displaced by the new city expansions?

THE NEW FACADE_
extending the border
I
n this specific environment, the preconditions are based on the relationship with the strongest presence, the water. A long stretch of buildings, situated along the waterline, earn as much devotion in crossing the stretch as walking parallel along it. The logical consequence of a building with intense water-related activities is that it’s positioning is close to the water itself. The building acts as a transit zone between land and water. Crossing a physical or symbolic border carries out a change in content once the border is in fact crossed. When conceiving the building itself as being an interspace, both borders of that building can be completely separating, connecting, revealing or accentuating.

T
he building line and its climax end anchor point are positioned along the water line of the harbour. Different programmes are aligned within the building line, with several ‘passage vents’ integrated within the volume. The volume line acts a brick sculpture, the rhythm of the arches (openings) is fixed but they vary in purpose. Within the sculpture, interconnected volumes comprehend the different functions. According to the programme and the flows perpendicularly through the line, the openings serve as window openings, entrances or exterior passages/ spaces. The linear building has the advantage that it has an accessible radiation. Without one (or more) main entrance(s), the approachability of the hub is big.

The harbor environment has clear, aligned borders, along the water line but at every part quite narrow.
From city center to outer corner, one can navigate along the water border, along the sailing boats. At the dilutation, the walk could be continued, however, in a slightly different angle. Between those two lines, there’s an interesting void inbetween that overlooks the inner sailing harbor.

While the stroll has an endpoint at the merging point of harbor, city and green, the most imortant interaction between the buildings and their environment is the activity on the water.
The small grain of buildings along the borders of the harbor provide a dynamic interaction with the users as well as providing a certain transparancy/accessibility from the surrounding areas.

Cultural (sailing) hub
combining functions

ailing club Aarhus, more than a club. By and large, the master dissertation project task is to design a : sailing club, Viking museum and additional boat repair spaces. In fact it’s more than merely designing autonomous functions on a specified location. The sustainable approach in this project task embraces the merging of (similar) functions into one cultural hub. It’s about the merging of functions with different scales, frequency in visits, maintenance, target audience… into a functioning new whole. A total that comprehends clusters of shared spaces, strengthening the functions’ existence by intelligent use of space. The aim of the design is to provide a structure that serves the whole sailing harbor. The building (cluster) acts as a motor and a shelter for the multiplicity of functions within the site. Beyond the programme of the museum and the sailing club, the new sailing hub provides outdoor infrastructure for public use. The hub is more than an actor for the harbor but invites all the people of Aarhus to enjoy the life by sailing bay.

A
fter a long day at the sailing harbour, having endured the severe climate, the sun, water and the wind, the sailing hub provides a space to withdraw in the comfort of an indoor climate. Meeting up, sheltered from the heavy winds whilst having a drink and enjoying the lively view of the bay. The solid radiation of the brick sculpture outside is contrasted with the light volumes within, lined with warm wood planking. Imagining coming from the sea, being dried off and having a seat in the comfortable inner space, the contrast outside brick/ inside wood works as an invitation for the users of the infrastructure. Brick and wood are regional materials and often used in Danish architecture.

he process of urban repair in the Schßtzenmatt area has given the perfect opportunity to link the surrounding features (Museum, Social house, Riverbank‌) and reinforcing a social-democratic dwelling, housing a new function: a new place for democracy. A building, symbolically conceived as a pnyx, an ancient Greek gathering place. No better location for a place where you can enter freely, without any social barrier of prejudice than in this midst of cultural centers. The pnyx clings on the slope of the riverbank, acting as a new gateway building for the city of Bern. More so, it also provides a new place for the students to gather, have a meeting, organize, perform and elaborate on their ideas. The pnyx is especially organized in a way that it is accessible for bikes with a double layered entrance, promoting easy acess for every environment-friendly visitor as well. The workplaces at the base are transparent and welcoming. The upper rooms provide spaces to inform, express and demonstrate. The pnyx is a place that is accessible, in every sense of the word. A space for democracy.

he project theme of the design studio was divided into two chapters; an input through urban (large scale) planning and a second stage of implementation of smaller scale architecture. The project site is situated around the Brussels’ canal, at the southern region; Cureghem. In order to cope with the growing demand of comfortable housing, the abandoned space around the canal forms a great opportunity to reinvigorate. With a first stage of investigating in proper connections across and aside the canal, the site and the canal region in its broader context regains accessibility from the different city centers. The macro scale of the project consisted in implementing architecture of an urban scale that could help set the first base of reinvigorating the neighborhood. The abandoned industrial buildings are proposed to be renovated and rehabilitated. In order to align a public ‘square’ that borders along the canal, a second ‘wall’ is constructed with an apartment building. Hinged at two industrial buildings, the new apartment block, with public functions at the ground floor, forms a corner and defines the public space. In the center of the square, an old industrial hall is reallocated to a marked hall/sports hall for the youth in the area. An engine building is constructed beside the renovated hall, housing a cafeteria, administration, changing rooms etc.

fter being completely burned out, the St.-Pieters church in Galmaarden was in need of rebuilding and reallocation. Over the years, the church had gotten too big for its ecclesiastic purpose. The concept of the renovation aimed at a better use of space. The roof of the church is foreseen as going to be rebuilt but only serving as a water/wind-proof layer, sheltering smaller box-in-box volumes within. At the side of the market, parking space makes way for a new square. The windows of the church are elongated till the ground, creating a series of openings from the church-hall to the outside. The building gains in transparency and actively participates in the public domain.

A Mosque_ 2011-2012 Project theme: choose and analyse a site, implement its demands; a mosque in the Rabot quarter in collaboration with Katarina Bergarova Teachers: Gisèle Gantois, Wim Goes

he scope of the project was the analysis of a certain area, site by mapping different parameters on site and through databases. The analysis conclusion results in a greater insight of what that specific place really needs, in an economical, social and environmental matter. The aim is to carefully dismantle the site in different layers and alter each of them in order to reinvigorate it. The chosen site was a park and an empty electrical substation (architect Jan-Albert De Bondt), in the middle of the Rabot quarter. Rabot is known for its multicultural character as well as for being one of the poorest neighborhoods in Ghent. The site currently lacks accessibility for the neighborhood and the deserted building in the middle of the park is very secluded from its surroundings. By opening up certain walls and stripping certain infrastructure in the park, the site regains potential use for the surrounding inhabitants. Surely, in this dense quarter a green spot is much appreciated. The ongoing quest from the Turkish community to build a suiting mosque led to implement this demand near/ in the abandoned building. The current walls of the former electrical substation form a courtyard for the new mosque. The building itself will partly serve as a market space and neighborhood center. The mosque building itself seamlessly blends with the electrical substation in material and proportion. The mosque is conceived as a modern interpretation of religious architecture. It’s an introvert building, positioned aligned with the walls of the park. The direction of Mecca is indicated by the floor tiling (positioned in an angle).

DUPLEXWONING_ Leefruimtes oost-west geรถrienteerd, de sokkel waarborgt de privacy aan de tuin en de straat. De zones zijn opgesplitst in een ruime zithoek aan het westen en een gecombineerde kook- en eetruimte aan de tuinzijde.
De vide in de eetruimte vergroot het ruimtegevoel en voorziet de badkamer van het nodige daglicht. De grootste slaapkamer kijkt tevens uit op de vide maar staat ook in verbinding met de buitenruimte.

T
he bachelor dissertation project is situated in Molenbeek, Brussels. The design task consisted in transforming a given building block in the quarter and design a co-housing cluster of minimum 35 units of different sizes (apartments, houses, studios‌) and an underground parking garage. The inhabitants share a garden, laundry salon, garage, big kitchen (for private events). Starting from a monolithic building block, a garden is subtracted in the middle/ edge of the volume. Secondly, parallel strips on different heights are subtracted, providing informal circulation for the different units. The mix of town houses, apartments and studios ensures a level of social equality and prevents the building block from becoming a gated community within the neighborhood.
