Durban Poison By SHERIF AWAD In 1988, South African filmmaker Andrew Worsdale wrote and directed his feature debut Shot Down right after he finished his masters in UCLA. Shot Down was about a filmmaker, Paul Gilliat, (Robert Colman) who returns to South Africa after studying in the US only to be employed by the security branch to gain access to Rasechaba, a black radical playwright whose works are presented in small back rooms in the townships. Paul inveigles himself into the right circles befriending an independent cabaret producer and his actors who are performing a cabaret called Famous Dead Man about the assassination of Hendrik Verwoerd.

Shot Down was banned during that era but was later recognized as a cult favorite. His follow-up Durban Poison was just about to be made at that time when he was forced to abandon the project because the investors suddenly pulled out. Wordale left South Africa for many years. When he returned, he eventually succeeded in finding the funds to produce Durban Poison. The film premiered at the Durban Film Festival last July (2012); the Best South African Feature Film Award was bestowed on the film. Told in flashback, Durban Poison is a South African version of Bonnie and Clyde, an exposé of a relationship between two lovers Piet (Brandon Auret) and Joline (Cara Roberts) whose passionate affair is self-destructive; they ended up as serial-killers of four people in a game of sex for money. AWAD: Can you let us know what got you interested in film /cinema? What was the direction of your years of study in the US? Why did you take a directorial hiatus between the two films? What did you do all those years until you came to produce Durban Poison? WORSDALE: I’ve loved movies since I was a toddler – all I’ve ever really loved. In South Africa, when I grew up, there was no TV and so I spent most weekends at the cinemas. Later, I worked with a home movie up till the dawn of Betamax and VHS. But before that, I always had a 16mm projector at home and would invariably reel up old MGM movies ’cause that’s what the shop had – everything from the Marx Brothers to Point Blank to Dr. Zhivago on my bedroom walls... later I studied drama because there was no film school in South Africa. But I was lucky to get a Fulbright (Scholarship) to do my Master of Fine Arts (MFA) at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in Film. There I was taught by Prof.Teshome Gabriel who opened my eyes to third world cinema and the work of the Brazilian Glauber Rocha, the Burkinabé Gaston Kaboré, the Senegalese Djibril Diop Mambéty, etc – as well as The Chroniclers of apartheid Kevin Harris, Peter Davis, etc… I was at UCLA in the mid-80s and my references for Shot Down were the British Director Alex Cox (Walker and Repo Man) and the German Wim Wenders (Paris,Texas). I tried to make Durban Poison straight after Shot Down – I wanted to do a genre film after the experiment and inner ‘turmoil’ and rough introspection of Shot Down’s guilty white “leftie” politics – the movie fell through in 1987 - I went overseas, and to cut a long story short, I became a film critic and drunk, unable to make a movie – then after sobering up, and given the chance, I went back to Durban Poison – and it’s a better film for the experience and downfalls both personally and professionally that came in between... AWAD: I was mesmerized by the introduction to Shot Down where it says that South Africa is a state governed by madness…, etc. Was that the main reason behind banning the film at that time? The main character in Shot Down returns to South Africa after studying in the US. Were there any biographical references to yourself in creating him? Has South Africa changed since you made Shot Down? Is Shot Down still banned in South Africa? WORSDALE: Shot Down was made almost twenty years ago at a time when state repression was at its height, and when the concept of ‘culture’was murky, to say the least.

I made Shot Down as an expression of my complete paranoia and guilt as a middle-class left-wing young South African, and it benefited from the group effort of the crew who were in similar positions. As such, I believe it works, ten years down the line, as a powerful and unique historical document the only record of young white leftie anxiety amidst the turmoil of the Eighties. Shot Down was unbanned in 1995 – and had a brief release – it was bought by DSTV’s African Film Library and can occasionally be seen on Mzansi Magic (One of the channels of DSTV cable); there, an article on censorship related to the original banning was expressed as,’it’s of no artistic merit whatsoever!’ AWAD: About banning films in South Africa…I was surprised that Of Good Report, the opening film of Durban Film Festival 2013 was banned by The Film & Publications Board (FPB) (The equivalent of the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) in the US, then was green-lighted near the end of the festival. To tell you the truth, I think what its South African director Jahmil X.T. Qubeka did at the opening night was a little bit staged and performed; tearing apart his passport in front of the audience. Any comments on that? WORSDALE: I know Jahmil and regard him as a forceful talent – he’s theatrical I guess – what got me that night is that there was no immediate reaction from the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF)… Also I balked at Faith Isiakpere and Firdoze Bulbulia (The film’s associate producers) who were associated with Jahmil and the movie hijacking the ‘action’ for their

own benefit / egos – I dislike them intensely! AWAD: In the same context, as a filmmaker, what do you think about the current status of South African censorship? WORSDALE: I think South Africa is in an age of anxious control and frustrated repressed anarchy – the notion of a new censorship law relating to the press and disclosure of ‘politically’ sensitive materials, as well as the corrupt and self-serving forces within the state that are appearing like welts every day, make me very concerned.. AWAD: It is said in your interview published in the South African Sunday Tribune that you wrote Durban Poison a long time ago. Did you update the script before shooting it now? WORSDALE: The origins of Durban Poison lie in the fact that Shot Down was a kind of experimental movie – a mix of documentary and angry young white leftie agit-prop – I wanted to make a so-called ‘normal’ movie. At that time I was reading James Cain’s Postman Always Rings Twice and watching noir movies. Durban Poison fell through for several reasons in 1988 – money – but significantly the fact that the political situation was getting even more tense and vivid meant that no one saw the relevance of making a film about these white outcasts when the country was falling apart. My circle, and myself, at the time were idealists and wanted to be part of the overthrow of the regime and be part of a new South Africa – we were all living in Yeoville, a suburb of Johannesburg, at a time which, in itself, was some kind of microcosm of a new South Africa… On my return to South Africa in 1995, I once again tried to resurrect the project and yet again more drafts were written – the flashbacks were cut in favor of a linear narrative. I could just sort of scrape by as a citric but ended up being fired, creating scenes at previews and festivals and became generally rowdy and I slid into a hell that led to several rehabs, a divorce, accidents, falls, broken jaws, ribs, and many, many missed deadlines... I cleaned up several times, only to fall off the wagon again – however about four years ago, producer Diony Kempen, eventually helped me to produce Durban Poison. AWAD: There is a lot of physical and psychological violence practiced by the South African Police as depicted in Durban Poison. Is that really the case nowadays? WORSDALE: I think the violence in the film is a reflection of male chauvinist society – these conceited empty men fighting with each other – the common South African emotion of road rage or the

notion of South African sprint runner Oscar Pistorius – the macho killer of his girlfriend – testosterone gone wrong – the irony in Durban Poison is that with all these men ‘flashing their _____ around in macho fashion she has the biggest one of all because she killed the men – so in that way it kind of functions as a feminist reaction to that male violence and rigid conceit in the South African society. AWAD: How was Durban Poison received by viewers in the latest Durban Festival? WORSDALE: It’s tremendously difficult to know what people think – but they laughed, they gasped, some even cried. I think they really liked the fact that it is very, very South African, and a unique local movie in that it doesn’t play it’s politics on its sleeve… it’s an emotional movie that stays with you – it’s cinematic – something which, unfortunately, local cinema lacks for the most part.. AWAD: How do you see South African cinema within Africa and within the world? WORSDALE: I do think we copy American cinema in terms of narrative and genre – and so we have the South African gangster movie – and Durban Poison works within the genre – outlaw couple on the run – but I tried twisting the trope quite a bit – distribution is a major challenge here and the majors still have no clue – they are suffering from the deathblow inflicted by apartheid when no cinemas were built for the majority of the population – we haven’t copied the Nollywood (Nigerian Cinema) model; we weren’t as set-up when VHS was king! – I do think we need to start telling stories that are deliberately not political – in other words stop dwelling on it – all stories are political. South African industry problems are the gatekeepers, a useless and corrupt broadcaster, distributors without a clue, etc, etc – i could go on, but I

need people to show my movie! AWAD: What will be your next project? WORSDALE: I am currently supposed (!) to be doing a re-write on Freddie’s Hairfood Factory, a comedy musical that I co-wrote with South African author Rian Malan, it’s set in the world of the music industry and it’s about cultural theft, arrogance and selling your soul and the right way to find it again – it is being produced by David Heitner, at one point one of South Africa’s foremost editors (Cry the Beloved Country, Sarafina!, etc) Born in Cairo, Egypt, Sherif Awad is a film / video critic and curator. Yonkers Prospectus Rich With Newly Found Promise By HEZI ARIS A recent comment on the Yonkers Tribune website took me aback by its intense anger. It revealed in my reading it issues with regard to present Yonkers Acting Clerk Vincent Spano. The paragraph-long comment was quick to malign an individual who may or may not have had all the credentials thought necessary when he was afforded the opportunity to sink or swim as one of three Yonkers City Clerks approximately twelve or thirteen years ago. Whether he possessed a high school degree or not at that time, one thing is clear and indisputable in 2013; that is, he is the only person with the knowledge, experience, and drive to fulfill the demands the job requires, despite a few minor slip ups here or there, as we all can attest is likewise in our lives. He has raised the bar of excellence and demeanor beyond any other, including those who may have sat in that same office years ago. I suggest the anger and acrimony unleashed against Mr Vincent Spano is misplaced. The anger, acrimony, and blame is shouldered by each of us though some will deny bearing the enormous weight that has stunted our potential as a city for too many years.

The realization of the lack of fairness has finally caused some among us to voice our frustration, anger, and incredulity along the avenues available in the City of Gracious Living. While it may have been so for some, it has been everything but that for others. There was a time when standards were espoused yet were too often maligned in silence. Despite enough people in the know, the onus of suffering retribution that could cause the loss of employment for oneself, or family members was real. Dare I suggest it thrives to this day? Most definitely, because it assuredly does. But know one thing, those on the lowest rung of the totem pole within City Hall are neither respected, addressed, nor acknowledged. They are only expected to restrict themselves to their task. Those in office with greater responsibility may dress the part somewhat, but they, too, are of little consequence to the few at the top. Yonkers has learned to follow orders if it knows what is good for the survival of the individuals within it. Follow orders or find yourself kicked in the rear, booted out of the City of Yonkers with no ability to address the “issue(s)”. Welcome to Yonkers. Then again, welcome to Chicago, Washington, D.C., New Orleans, Miami, Los Angeles, what have you. We have all defiled and soiled ourselves. Even so, I believe Yonkers’ potential to rebuild and revive itself is inherent in the culture of Yonkers in spite of any shortcomings

The secret ingredient is as old-fashioned as the sugar and spice (albeit in moderation, lest we suffer medical concerns – another issue, another day) we possess because there is not one among us in CoY that is separated from another by 6 degrees. We know each other very well. Even so, we have lost our way. We have been divided and are enslaved in the conquering of us by our personal greed and avarice. The time to change is now.We can claim to need time to change and we can claim to be working on how to deal with an issue or issues, or we can concoct excuses to forestall some of us continuing to maintain the upper hand or power over others. Yonkers is adept at playing its citizenry for more time to one end, that is to dupe its populace to believe in the “words” and to be disappointed for the “lack of proof ” of any attempt to make a correction other than muttering it. It is a stall; Yonkers is adept at it. The “stall” has enslaved us for decades. Whatever the issue, its purpose was only to maintain a status quo to maintain power over

all Yonkersites. It worked because City Hall is the largest employer in the city. For each employee, multiply the figure by four (family and friends). The result is approximately 12,000 to 13,000 votes, the number required to win the General Election for Mayor of Yonkers. If the man at the top were benevolent, he would infuse his leadership ability to direct honest, pragmatic, benevolent effort on behalf of Yonkersites. Lacking those attributes will only permit a government to flounder despite its pronouncements and purpose. Trying is not good enough; results are the only ingredient worthy of measure, everything else is simply make believe and loquacious chatter. Having literally wandered aimlessly into less than we can achieve, the time has come to cry out. There is much that needs to be dusted off and scrutinized and either trashed or revitalized. Should Mayor Spano want to take the lead, who better than the man at the top. He can suggest the direction and reveal the need and the purpose and the expectation and lead with the knowledge he has gained support through consensus and open dialogue. While Mr. Vincent Spano may not have possessed the bonafides required at the time of his hiring, he has earned the

experience at this juncture some 12 or 13 years later. Should he have had the opportunity to gain employ as a Yonkers City Clerk at that time? Perhaps not. In fact I did not appreciate the strong-arm tactic that got him the job at that time. Even so, I have reassessed his ability, passion, self-driven demand of himself to always excel in his job that today reveals, as it did in years past, that he is likely the best to manage the office. Is there more to learn? Absolutely. Is Mr. Vincent Spano purposefully engaged toward that end? Most assuredly he is. So were does the issue of disappointment, anger, disillusionment, frustration, disgust, anger, among so many other issues and concerns serve the majority of us that have been denied an opportunity in a system that served a select few? At present, the answer is nowhere; no prospect for change worthy of our time, our families, much less our ability to thrive among the lot handed to us, and little opportunity to work our way out of this quagmire. It may be best to turn to our future rather than change the past. Scrutinize those employed with real purpose and effort. I need not espouse the standards… everyone knows what they are. We need only abide by those standards. And those who know

of a concern that causes their reluctance to ascribe to what is being planned in the name of Yonkersites must express themselves in a timely fashion. They must not waste their time “bitching” about a situation among “friends”. Talking to anyone that does not produce a result of some kind within tops a months time has shown their cards; they will do nothing - they ARE empty suits. Eunachs as far as I’m concerned. Speaking to elected officials is nice. I suggest you write your thoughts down, submit it to every elected official and await an answer, advising all that you expect remedy within 30 days. I am not just talking about those elected within the City of Yonkers. Make sure you have also advised the Westchester County Executive and the Albany Delegation and the New York State Governor, Comptroller, and Attorney General, even the U.S. Attorney, the County District Attorney, and the Yonkers Inspector General, and the Yonkers Ethics Board. No answer; no problem. Reach out to the press. Within a half year of maintaining your demand for an answer on any and every issue, you will find you are being heard. This is how Democracy functions. Long ago bequeathed to all citizens by the U.S. Constitution it must not languish; resuscitate

your rights. If you revert to talking amongst a few friends, you will get nowhere. It hasn’t worked in Yonkers for over 20 years. Time to wise up, drink the coffee, and open one’s eyes to how it gets done in the year 2013. Demand legislation that hires the best from the City of Yonkers. Demand new jobs go to Yonkersites first and not to carpetbaggers. New contracts should demand residency in the City of Yonkers. Those who want to live elsewhere are welcome to find employment there. Yonkers must learn how the system works for them and society at large if it wants to live to its fullest potential. No one asks for more… we must remember not to accept less. It is no longer appropriate to live under the slogan heard too often to this very day in laughter or with tears: “That’s Yonkers for ya!” Yonkers can no longer ascribe to an old and battered image of itself. The time to build something of worth is upon us. Voting is the beginning of the process. Voting will require an easy five-year to ten-year commitment of each of us. Voting is the ticket to a better life and is relevant to each of us in the community called CoY; no longer shy or reluctant to call it as it sees it.

also means, as a Reuters article (http://www. reuters.com/article/2013/08/13/nynyu-stern-school-idUSnBw135869a+ 100+BSW20130813) points out, that “On the flip-side, local newspapers lost out on billions in potential revenue as readers who historically posted their classified ads in the paper opted to post their ads on Craigslist.” The Reuters article also quotes other relevant points from the study -“The researchers also identified several ripple effects across the newspaper industry. They calculated that newspapers relying heavily on classified-ad revenue (i.e., papers with classifiedad managers) saw a: 20.7% drop in classified-ad rates 3.3% increase in subscription prices 4.4% decrease in circulation 16.5% increase in differentiation from other papers 3.1% decrease in display-ad rates Lower likelihood of providing content online” So -- what do we have here? We have an industry that has lost billions of dollars due to technological development (and has been unable to “cash in” with its own online advertising); that has lost papers and pages due to declining revenue; and has lost readers due to both technological and demographic changes (it is the younger generations that have seized on on-line news reading). Not a pretty

picture if you’re a newspaper “junkie” (as I am) and even worse if you’re a newspaper employee or a journalism student. The Forbes article referred to above makes the point that the authors of the study see the newspaper industry as an evolving one rather than a dying one, “akin to the way it did after the introduction of radio and then television” and quotes Professor Seamans as saying “I wouldn’t say Craigslist is killing newspapers. We hear a lot about how the newspaper industry is dying or maybe a dinosaur. My coauthor and I definitely don’t think that’s the case.” Whatever the case, the changes in the industry have caused tension within it as New York Times media columnist David Carr points out in a column, “War on Leaks Is Pitting Journalist vs. Journalist” (http://www. nytimes.com/2013/08/26/business/media/ war-on-leaks-is-pitting-journalist-vs-journalist.html). Carr quotes reputable print journalists as striking out against WikiLeaks (“who brokered the publishing of Private Manning’s documents”) and Glenn Greenwald (“the columnist for The Guardian who has led the Snowden revelations”) in a way that neither the New York Times nor the Washington Post were attacked when they released the “Pentagon Papers,” purloined by Daniel Ellsberg. Among the quotes in Carr’s article: David Gregory on “Meet the Press,”

interviewing Greenwald -- “To the extent that you have aided and abetted Snowden, even in his current movements, why shouldn’t you, Mr. Greenwald, be charged with a crime?” Jeffrey Toobin (of the New Yorker and CNN) referred to David Miranda, Greenwald’s partner who was detained by British intelligence in a London airport for nine hours as the equivalent of a “drug mule” and attacked any journalists for “abetting illegal acts,” saying “Journalists are not above the law. The Jane Mayers, Sy Hershes and Walter Pincuses have all done superb work for decades without the rampant lawlessness that was behind these stories. I’ve never heard any of those journalists endorsing the wholesale theft of thousands of classified government records.” Michael Grunwald (a senior national correspondent at Time) wrote on Twitter: “I can’t wait to write a defense of the drone strike that takes out Julian Assange.” -- He later apologized. Carr muses on these reactions, writing “What have Mr. Assange and Mr. Greenwald done to inspire such rancor from other journalists? Because of the leaks and the stories they generated, we have learned that in the name of tracking terrorists, the N.S.A. has been logging phone calls and e-mails for years, recorded the metadata of correspondence between Americans, and in some instances, dived right into the content of e-mails. The WikiLeaks documents revealed that the United States turned a blind

Read All About It? By JOHN F. McMULLEN Statistics from Pew Research tell us that more people now get their news from the Internet than from newspapers (“the transition to digital journalism” -- http://multimedia.journalism.berkeley.edu/tutorials/ digital-transform/print-and-broadcastnews-vs-internet/).They also tell us that “In 2012, newspapers lost $16 in print ads for every $1 earned in digital ads. And it’s getting worse ... In 2011, the ratio was just 10-to-1” (“This Is the Scariest Statistic About the Newspaper Business Today” -- http://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2013/03/ this-is-the-scariest-statistic-about-thenewspaper-business-today/274125/). What these statistics are telling us (in case we hadn’t already noticed it) is that the newspaper business is in real trouble. Newspapers have merged or been acquired (with the most recent acquisition of the venerable Washington Post by entrepreneur Jeff Bezos, the founder of the highly successful Amazon. com, which in turn, has virtually eliminated local independent book stores throughout the United States). Those still publishing have, in most cases, either dramatically cut the

number of pages or, in the case of Rupert Murdoch’s Wall Street Journal and New York Post, reduced the physical dimensions of the pages themselves. A major reason for the decline in pages has been the impact on print advertising by on-line advertising, particularly “Craigslist.” For years, Craigslist founder Craig Newmark has been maintaining that the ineptitude of the papers themselves, rather than his service, is the reason for the decline of newspapers. A recent Forbes article, “Craigslist Took $5 Billion From Newspapers” (http://www.forbes. com/sites/jeffbercovici/2013/08/14/ sorry-craig-study-finds-craigslist-costnewspapers-5-billion/) both quotes a Newmark August 11th statement to the New York Times, “I’m still waiting to see any hard evidence for cause-and-effect. I’ve been paying attention for a long time.” and then points to a study by NYU Sloan School of Business professor Robert Seamans and Harvard Business School professor Feng Zhu, “Responses to Entry in Multi-Sided Markets: The Impact of Craigslist on Local Newspapers” (http://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/ in papers.cfm?abstract_id=1694622), which the authors “estimate that Craigslist’s entry leads to $5.0 billion in savings to classifiedad buyers during 2000-2007.” This statement

WikiLeaks also published a video showing a United States Army helicopter opening fire on a group of civilians, including two Reuters journalists. In the instance of the stories based on the purloined confidential documents in the Manning and Snowden leaks, we learned what our country has been doing in our name, whether it is in war zones or in digital realms.” He decides “The larger sense I get from the criticism directed at Mr. Assange and Mr. Greenwald is one of distaste — that they aren’t what we think of as real journalists. Instead, they represent an emerging Fifth Estate composed of leakers, activists and bloggers who threaten those of us in traditional media. They are, as one says, not like us.” and adds “It is true that Mr. Assange and Mr. Greenwald are activists with the kind of clearly defined political agendas that would be frowned upon in a traditional newsroom. But they are acting in a more transparent age — they are their own newsrooms in a sense — and their political beliefs haven’t precluded other news organizations from following their leads.” I agree with Carr’s conclusions and think that they may also tie in with Seamans’ description of an evolving, not dying, industry. The newspaper journalists probably thought, in days of yesteryears, that the fledgling radio, and later, television reporters really weren’t journalists. If the industry is, in fact, evolving to something new -- a combination of print and digital -- it will require aspiring journalists (and those already there) to acquire new skills and understanding to be competitive. It also puts demands on the reader to critically

analyze the on-line source. Most newspaper readers know enough to generally accept the New York Times and Wall Street Journal as “papers of record” (while understanding that the Times generally has a Liberal editorial viewpoint and the Journal generally a Conservative one) while questioning more critically the stories in supermarket tabloids. Do most know enough to properly weigh the veracity and objectivity of “The Daily Kos,” “The Daily Beast,” “Salon,” “Slate,” “The Blaze,” “The Huffington Post,” “Raw Story,” “AlterNet” and the thousands and thousands of other web-based news services? I doubt it -- readers will have to evolve right along with the industry. The news industry differs from others in that it is constitutionally protected under the “Freedom of the Press” provision of the First Amendment (once we can agree on who the press and journalists are in this new digital world) but it is similar to everything else around us in that all -- businesses, the public, critics, students, really all -- must do whatever necessary through constant questioning, re-education, imagination, and discipline to remain competitive and responsible while everything constantly changes in our “creatively disruptive world”. Creative Disruption is a continuing series examining the impact of constantly accelerating technology on the world around us. These changers normally happen under our personal radar until we find that the world as we knew it is no more.

After teaching at Cardinal Hayes High School in Bronx, NY, he became a member of the faculty at Iona College, teaching Theology and Sociology (after being an undergraduate Physics major he would acquire Masters in Theology, Sociology, and Anthropology at The Catholic University, Fordham University, and Drew University and complete all the PhD work in Religious Studies at Drew, save the language requirement). I followed him through All Hallows and then was off to Iona, where I had him in class for two Freshman Theology courses on the Bible – two A’s – I worked harder for him than any other professor (and got thrown out of class once). During my time at Iona, I got to know my brother as an adult and found that, even though we had not grown up together, we shared many of the same interests, particularly books and sports. I can’t remember ever seeing him without a book, always either his academic interests or sports. After I gradated from Iona, our paths diverged a bit – I went into technology, first with the Federal Government and then with Wall Street firms while he was transferred to become Principal at Power Memorial High School in New York City (where Lew

Alcindor, later Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was a student). He enjoyed Power and I got to a lot of their basketball games and receptions. A few years later, I was on a dais next to my brother at a luncheon of over a hundred people honoring him for his accomplishments in twenty-five years as a Christian Brother and, when I mentioned that my childhood friend, Jim Casey, was leaving the order of teaching brothers that he was in, my brother replied “I am, too.” I was more than a bit shocked when he explained that he was leaving at the end of the school year and would get married in the following summer. Once I recovered from my shock, I was very happy for him. He obtained a position at Caldwell College in Caldwell, NJ as a professor of theology and was part of the faculty when it went from a woman’s only college to a co-ed school and expanded quite a bit and he served for a number of years as Department Chair. Additionally, he became a deacon in the Roman Catholic diocese of Patterson, and remained active in that role for years. With all the changes in his life, he remained a fanatical Red Sox fan and on July 4, 1983, he, his wife Beatrice, my wife Barbara. and I were in the stands at Yankee Stadium when Dave Righetti threw a

no-hitter against his beloved Red Sox. Before the last Red Sox batter Wade Boggs came to the plate, Barbara (who he was very close to) leaned over and said “Aren’t you rooting for the no hitter now?” He said “No” and, after Boggs (later a Yankee) struck out to end it (http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/ eye-on-baseball/22636878/happy-30thhe birthday-dave-righettis-nohitter), wouldn’t speak to her for over an hour. His baseball obsession not withstanding, he was the most generous person I ever knew and one of the smartest. It all went downhill, however, not long after his retirement when he began descending into Alzheimer’s to the point that he didn’t know Barbara or me – and it went on for years until his death. The tragedy of seeing all the knowledge that he had amassed from all those books be all gone was more than I could handle well. I still have his “Ted Williams baseball” – the ink has faded over the years but I can still see the message from the greatest hitter I ever saw to the best person I ever knew.

My Brother Was A Red Sox Fan By JOHN F. MCMULLEN My brother was a Boston Red Sox fan... and he was also the best person that I ever knew. He was sixteen years older than I, graduating from All Hallows High School the year after I was born. He entered Iona College in 1940, a member of the first class (his name, with the other members of that class, is now on a large Celtic Cross in the middle of the campus). Two years later, he joined the religious teaching order that staffed both All Hallows and Iona, then called the “Christian Brothers of Ireland” (now simply the “Christian Brothers”). For years, I told people that I drove him out of the house. Since he was around only occasionally and, when he was, he doted on me, I idolized him and, once I knew the names of baseball teams, I became a Red Sox fan because he was (my father was a New York Giant fan while my mother tried to stay neutral by “rooting for all of them”). I attribute his almost fanatical (from whence “fan” comes) devotion to the Red Sox to the fact that my mother’s family was

from Boston and he spent summers there with my grandmother when the depression years forced both my mother and father to work (this was a time in which few mothers did work outside the house). His favorite player and mine was the greatest hitter than I have ever seen, Ted Williams, and one of his happiest times was when a pseudo-uncle of mine arranged for his cousin, the trainer for the Red Sox, Jack Fadden, to procure an autographed baseball with the inscription “To Brother McMullen… Ted Williams.” This became his proudest possession -- but, two years later when I was sick in bed with bronchitis, he came to visit and held out the baseball “I want you to have this.” He was the most generous person that I had ever known; I was told the same thing by those who served with him in the Brothers, and those who taught with him in other schools. I left the Red Sox faith as I got older, first to become a New York Giants fan and, then, after they deserted me in 1957, simply a New York baseball fan (one of those hated by both Yankee and Met fans because I root for

You Are What You Type By BOB MARRONE I no longer exist, and neither do you. Outside of the small intimate circle of human beings with whom we have face to face contact we have been reduced to an unfeeling, impersonal representation of letters, numbers and symbols on a screen. Visually, we have been limited to a photographic representation of ourselves capturing one infinitesimal moment in time. The most complete portfolio standing in lieu of our true selves is now referred to as our profile. Heaven help us all. While it is true that the Internet with its associated websites and information rich pages has advanced business productivity, scientific research, political activism and the speed with which we acquire knowledge, it threatens to take away our humanity and, worse, diminish our already tainted personal integrity. The great paradox here is that at the very same time our true essence is obscured, we are compelled to created fantastic versions of ourselves just to compete. The rise of Twitter, Instagram and other instant social media has accelerated the pace at which our human need to adapt has driven us further into narcissistic self promotion and prevarication. While these carefully constructed lies or honest, though deluded, representations of ourselves often meet with success; our true selves, which is often more valuable and richer than the burnished one, is unable to shine though the digital fog. Bill Gates’ job application profile,

showing his dropping out of college and less than handsome face, would most likely not be selected by a computer or a human resources professional for an interview at a tech firm. If he phone called to get one, he would most certainly be told to go to the website. Have you ever been on a dating website? Scores of men and women of a certain age are almost always divorced, yet see themselves… or want you to see them… as the kindest, most forgiving people on the planet. The women (80% from Manhattan) are all looking for a mythical man who loves museums, wine tasting, art shows and opera, but who still manages to posses male genitalia somewhere in his pants. Since I have never trolled the other side of the tracks, I am sure the men want, as The Eagles so aptly sung it, an angel who is the daughter of the devil himself. On these sites we tell the kinds of lies that were once only the purview of marketing trolls. And the photos: I get a good chuckle at the ones that are taken so far away from the subject that you couldn’t hit them with a sniper rifle. No one knows the real you. My bank, which has seen me pay mortgages on time without a hiccup for thirty years, continues to pass my refinance file about the underwriting area because broadcasters don’t make what Wall Street professionals do. They don’t know me. No one there does, only the computer. They keep firing bankers because the computer is making the decision. Anyone who knows the real me would give me that refinance in a second. They would know that I would rather shoot myself than be a deadbeat. They would know that I paid back an enormous sum

to the banks in a failed business rather than declare bankruptcy. Worse still, there is no one at the bank who can even tell me whose decision it will be. It will come, they say, from the back office. I share this story because it is a common one. I am you, and neither of us exists as a person. It has gotten so crazy that everyone I know has a spreadsheet or notebook someplace with all their passwords in it. We need them for phone service, job applications, insurance companies, cable provider, Facebook, Linkedin and god knows what else. And all of them have our “profile.” In preparing them, we are told to think of keywords that get attention, etc. Something is terribly wrong. What companies are missing is that the already prevalent tendency toward timidity and “go along to get along” within business organizations, is being exacerbated by profiling and creating a class of executives and decision makers who abdicate their responsibilities to their computer models and systems. They play it safe and have something to blame if they are wrong. We as individuals are also letting profiles tell us who to date, or who to fix our cars. Sometimes we computer date people who don’t even exist, like that naïve football player. I have had it, but I don’t know what to do about it. I am reaching out to you to give me some ideas. I am tempted to go to the professional liars and con artists, marketing/PR types, to have them create a master profile about me. But then even I won’t know who I am. Egypt—Christians Killed for Ransom By RAYMOND IBRAHIM  Not only are the churches, monasteries, and institutions of Egypt’s Christians under attack by the Muslim Brotherhood and its supporters—nearly 100 now have been torched, destroyed, ransacked, etc.—but Christians themselves are under attack all throughout Egypt, with practically zero coverage in Western media. Days ago, for example, Copts held a funeral for Wahid Jacob, a young Christian deacon who used to serve in St. John the Baptist Church, part of the Qusiya diocese in Asyut, Egypt. He was kidnapped on August 21 by “unknown persons” who demanded

an exorbitant ransom from his impoverished family—1,200,000 Egyptian pounds (equivalent to $171,000 USD). Because his family could not raise the sum, he was executed—his body dumped in a field where it was later found. The priest who conducted his funeral service said that the youth’s body bore signs of severe torture. In fact, kidnapping young Christians and holding them for ransom has become increasingly common in Egypt. Last April, 10-year-old Sameh George, another deacon, or altar boy, at St. Abdul Masih (“Servant of Christ”) Church in Minya, Egypt, was also abducted by “unknown persons” while on his way to church to participate in Holy Pascha prayers leading up to Orthodox Easter. His parents said that it was his custom to go to

church and worship in the evening, but when he failed to return, and they began to panic, they received an anonymous phone call from the kidnappers, informing them that they had the Christian child in their possession, and would execute him unless they received 250,000 Egyptian pounds in ransom money. If those in Egypt being kidnapped and sometimes killed for ransom money are not all deacons, they are almost always churchattending Christians. Last April, for example, another Coptic Christian boy, 12-year-old Abanoub Ashraf, was also kidnapped right in front of his church, St. Paul Church in Shubra al-Khayma district. His abductors, four men, put a knife to his throat, dragged him to their car, opened fire on the church, and then sped away. Later they called the

boy’s family demanding a large amount of money to ransom child’s life. The hate for these Christians—who are seen as no better than dogs—is such that sometimes after being paid their ransom, the Muslim abductors still slaughter them anyway. This was the fate of 6-year-old Cyril Joseph, who was kidnapped last May. In the words of the Arabic report, the boy’s “family is in tatters after paying 30,000 pounds to the abductor, who still killed the innocent child and threw his body into the toilet of his home, where the body, swollen and moldy, was exhumed.” As for Christian girls, they are even more vulnerable than Christian boys and disappear with great frequency. As an International Christian Concern report puts it, “hundreds of Christian girls … have been abducted, forced to convert to Islam, and forced into marriage in Egypt. These

incidents are often accompanied by acts of violence, including rape, beatings, and other forms of physical and mental abuse.” Thus, while it is good that the nonstop attacks on Egypt’s churches have received some media attention, let us not forget the many, often young, Christian lives quietly being destroyed in Egypt, by those who would have the Muslim Brotherhood return to power. Dyslexia is a Learning Disorder not a Thinking Disorder By RICH MONETTI Dyslexia is a disorder causing readers and writers to jumble and misinterpret letters and symbols in varying degrees. The scramble, nonetheless, does not amount to a thinking disorder, and while it can be overcome in spades, there is one factor that always remains. “Dyslexia robs you of time,” relayed David Boies in the HBO Documentary, “The Big Picture: Rethinking Dyslexia”, which was produced by James Redford, son of screen legend Robert Redford. The noted attorney who argued to overturn California’s Proposition 8 ban on gay marriage and represented Al Gore in Bush v. Gore in 2001 went on to designate the journey each dyslexic must make before learning becomes possible. Calling

the process, “Cracking the code,” it drew a knowing applause from an audience of teachers, students and parents at the Windward School in White Plains, New York, where the film was recently screened. 14-year-old, Skye Lucas who appeared in the film and on the panel that followed, verified the sentiment,and the near state of illiteracy she brought to Windward in 7th grade. “I didn’t know how to learn yet,” said Skye. The crucial elixir that Windward helped her develop turned out to be flash cards, and this past June’s straight A’s provide the proof. Unfortunately, the educational system in general lags behind in recognizing the condition, and are not often knowledgeable in addressing it through proven interventions. “In Skye’s case,” said Geralyn Lucas, “her previous school gave up on my daughter.” That said, one of the main hurdles is getting schools to understand the

paradoxical nature of Dyslexia. “The condition contains both strengths and weaknesses, and that can be difficult to convey,” said Dr. John Russell, headmaster at Windward. Mr. Boies’ resume clearly speaks to the definition of Dyslexia, and the common factors shared with Skye, and names such as Sir Richard Branson and Charles Schwab, who both appeared in the film, in an elevated and creative capacity. Leaving their imagination situated well out of the box, it thereby becomes a matter of giving a student the chance to express it. As a result, educators need, but don’t always take into account the added time factor alluded to by David Boies above – especially in terms of taking tests. Dylan Redford expressed on film the difficulty of the added burden reading creates. “There’s so much performance anxiety during tests that I couldn’t understand anything,” said the filmmaker’s son.

In turn, a parent from the audience later voiced frustration as to why consideration is lacking from those who should know better. “Why don’t these top educators understand that extra time does not create an advantage for my son,” she said. Dr. Sally Shaywitz of the Center for Dyslexia and Creativity at Yale and author of Overcoming Dyslexia: A New and Complete Science-Based Program for Reading Problems at Any Level, acknowledged the pervading problem, and the importance of raising awareness. “We all have to get headmasters to understand that dyslexics are diamonds in the rough,” said Shaywitz to the audience. Even so, given a chance, Dylan still ran into problems when trying to get accepted into colleges. “They were concerned that the services received in high school – no matter the good grades – meant I would not be able to survive on my own,” lamented the young Redford in the film.

Cracking one’s code implies that inherently, and all the extra work dyslexics put in to keep pace becomes second nature. Sir Richard Branson, Charles Schwab and David Boies go quite a ways to proving that. But someday they might all be in Skye’s review mirror, and she’s not timid in admitting the part her condition played in the success she’s turned her young life into. “Dyslexia made me who I am, and I would not be as brave as I am without it,” she concluded. Jones is in incredible form, Tyner consistently flashes his razor sharp piano work throughout, and Garrison solidifies the bottom with his well intended bass lines, all of the musicians work together well giving the great Trane acres of space to extensively explore. Checkout the opening “Lonnie’s Lament,” especially Coltrane’s frenzied solo and duet with Jones. The gorgeous “Naima” (named for Coltrane’s wife Juanita Naima Grubbs is one of Coltrane’s most famous compositions) finds Tyner pushing Coltrane to further explore the beautiful melodies. I’m certain Rogers and Hammerstein never would have imagined that “My Favorite Things” would ever be interpreted with the enormous creativity Coltrane took this standard to, which goes on and on in brilliant fashion for over twenty-one minutes. Coltrane’s “Afro Blue” features Trane’s thrusting his piercing soprano beyond where most could never imagine. The two (original format) closing tunes “Spiritual” and “Impressions” introduce some form of structural harmonies, but not for long as the bands elasticity introduce hyper imaginative solos. Which brings us to the three bonus tracks: All three are different takes of (“Naima,” I Want to Talk about You,” and “My Favorite Things”) can be heard earlier on this and the original release. But both versions (now contained in one - two CD box set for the first time) of these three songs are quite distinctive and imaginative, as they launch new forms and colors, making it very interesting to compare the performances. This new edition of “Afro Blue Impressions” displays the power of one of the mightiest quartets of all time. The true bonuses are not only the added tracks. It’s also special to behold this (brief) assembly of four great musicians who magically melded their telepathic instrumental supremacy throughout these two very extraordinary European performances.

How Yonkers Shaped the Most Important Footrace in Olympic History By SUSAN THALER

As the running of the 2013 Yonkers Marathon approaches, these questions will be answered by marathon historians David Davis and Wayne Baker, who will speak on September 21st at the Riverfront Library, beginning at 2 P.M. This FREE program will take place in the Yonkers Room on the 4th floor. David Davis, a sports historian, is the author of Showdown at Shepherd’s Bush: The 1908 Olympic Marathon and the Three Runners Who Launched a Sporting Craze (St. Martin’s Press, 2012). Wayne Baker is Vice President of New Jersey’s Shore Athletic Club. He is also the custodian of the collection of Johnny Hayes memorabilia which was left to the Shore AC by Doris Hayes Hale for the purpose of perpetuating her

father’s memory. Items from that collection, including the Olympic gold medal, will be on display in the Yonkers Room during this presentation.

EYE ON THEATRE

From the Dungan Heap By JOHN SIMON The theaters at 59 E 59 (there are three or four of them, I am never quite sure) are in a building belonging to Elysabeth Kleinhans (I wish it were Elisabeth), who has converted it into theaters. Most of what is shown there is imported from Britain, and most of it is good, some of it excellent. But once in a while there is a clinker, and “The Life and Sort of Death of Eric Argyle” by Ross Dungan clinks loudest. It is largely nonsense, stupidly untheatrical at that, and impossible to follow either on stage or page. And not even interesting enough to want to follow. It was the second play by this markedly untalented Irish playwright, first presented on the Dublin Fringe, later on the Edinburgh one, and finally on what I take to be the London Fringe. At this point I must elucidate what the Fringe is all about. It is in several cities, including New York, an area where, for a few weeks and on a plethora of tiny, ill-equipped stages, numerous—almost countless—plays are produced, cheaply and primitively. Very, very few transfer to bigger and better venues, and even those may prove failures. The Fringe is pretty much a graveyard for white elephants. The best thing that ever came from it was the revue aptly entitled “Beyond the Fringe,” a hit for its four author-performers in Britain and on Broadway. But if ever there was a case of lightning striking more than once, this was it. Even the flatfooted author’s note in the program is weird. Dungan thanks, as he says, “least of all” his producer, director, composer and costume designer; surely he means “most of all,” though here nothing is certain. For preposterousness, let’s start with

the cast of characters as listed in the script. First, we get The Dead. Eric Argyle is 58. Roger, who doesn’t appear in the program, and seems to be the Narrator, enacted by others in turn, is “Age undetermined.” Julia ditto, though, like several others, she is never properly introduced and explained. Then we get Young Eric, “through ages 9 to 41,” and his friend Craig “11 through 30). Then Ms. Quillmore “64 to 86,” but don’t expect the action to explain ages at any given moment. It also names five characters as question askers, “all indeterminate ages” though we don’t get them as such in the production. Next come The Living. These include Jessica Bolger (age 33), who somehow inherits the 5000 plus pages of the book Eric has written and posted page by page in separate envelopes,” and who searches desperately for the proper recipient. She carries about a nephew named Marcus, age one, represented by a skimpy bundle of rags. There is Mr. Aldershot, Eric’s uncle (ages 50 to 86). Also Mr. Downey, in whose undefined shop Eric works (ages 53 to 84). Then there is Gillian (15 to 59), who seems to be the love interest of both Young Eric and some vague personage called Sam (59) who appears briefly both early and late. Gillian marries Craig, who dies early. Most puzzlingly, there is Imelda, Jessica’s niece, who is five, but doesn’t sound five when she speaks. Worse yet, she is played by the same actress who is also supposed to double as Julia and Ms. Quillmore, without our knowing when she is Imelda. There is also a Receptionist (28) and a Photographer (35), of whom we are scarcely aware, and about whose ages we couldn’t care less. Most confusingly, there is a Narrator, sometimes called Roger in the script, and who is played, I repeat, by several cast members, and who is mostly a woman, and goes on in sometimes

from a bag and “lay it down,” or when Eric himself “lays down and feels the pain in his chest start ebb away,” (please note the missing “to”) but with no such ebb for the audience’s pain. The acting seems good enough, by partly the same cast from earlier productions, all Irish or English imports. The problem for me is that the women are not especially appalling, most notable the one described by Eric as the most beautiful woman he ever saw. The action, such as it is, takes place in many locations, including rooftops, not made clear by the set’s few sticks of furniture on rollers, which the actors keep shifting around. There is also undistinguished music, played by a guitarist arbitrarily, sometimes seen, sometimes not, and there are two further instruments, including a kind of harmonium on a tabletop. There are also instructions about doubling, with the same actresses in two cases playing five parts. After this, I find it unnecessary to go into the plot.

I’ve just checked into Spice Island Beach Resort in Grenada and now a staff member is showing me to my room (ok, villa). Using a key, she opens the first of two doors and I find myself in a mini courtyard with a shimmering turquoise pool, a patio, a shaded sitting area, and steps leading up to my lodgings. Except to say that Eric, who dies by being run over at an intersection, wears throughout a bathrobe and socks without shoes. It seems that scenes from his life are being reenacted by some of the other dead characters as judges, but the judgment is withheld both from him and the audience. From an Irish play you might expect poetic language, but there is nothing of the kind. In the end, there is a long scene between Young Eric and Gillian that deviates into sense, but, never fear, not for long. And there are moments when the author seems illiterate, as when Jessica removed a manuscript

Put Some Spice in your Life Some islands, like people, luxuriate in their privacy. They lack no social graces and enjoy playing host to visitors but they’re also comfortable being left alone. This, in many ways, is Grenada and the island’s character results, in part, from being a land of plenty: fishing nets heavy with tuna, mackerel and grouper and volcanic soil so rich that crops seem to spring from the soil as if by magic. Grenada’s interior is lush and mountainous, waterfalls cascade into sparkling swim-holes and monkeys gorge on papaya and bananas. Spices? Oh, yes! The Island is chock-a-block with nutmeg,

Gouyave Fish Fry. ginger, vanilla, saffron, cinnamon, clove and allspice growing wild on verdant hillsides. All this has resulted in Grenada remaining unchanged for centuries. Because Grenada lies just below the southern edge of the hurricane belt, it had not experienced a major storm in more than half a century. Then, on September 7, 2004, all that changed. Hurricane Ivan touched down here with such strength and intensity that, within a day, thirty-seven people were dead and almost all of the country lay in shambles. Today,

for snorkeling - and one particular reason sets it apart from all others: The Molinere Underwater Sculpture Park. This is a collection of contemporary art created by British sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor. It opened in 2006, the very first of its kind in the world.

The artist’s aim was to engage local people with the underwater environment that surrounds them using his works, which are derived from life casts of the local community. He installed his cement figures onto

when one visits, there’s virtually nothing to suggest that Grenada is still struggling; in fact, it looks relatively unaffected – homes are once more intact, hotels are repaired and those towering twin palms that covered the island are still there – having bowed to the hurricane’s force, they survived. And the Spice Island Beach Resort? Seventy-five percent of it was destroyed. However, Sir Royston O. Hopkin, the resort’s owner, was undaunted. He embarked on a most ambitious project – to oversee the rebirth of his property and make this once outstanding hideaway even more splendid than before. Paradise re-found. The USD$12 million rebuilding project opened again in 2005 with accommodations consisting of 64 luxury suites and 34 beachfront units. Janissa’s Spa and Fitness Center has a new 5,600 square foot home and there’s the Nutmeg Pod, an activity center for kids. Condé Nast Traveler named the resort the

best in the Caribbean and it is considered one of the supreme honeymoon resorts in the world. Not to put too fine a point on it, Sir Royston himself has received numerous awards including his first accolade (CMG) from Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, and more recently the knighthood (KCMG) in 2005. Never content to rest on his laurels, this fall will see, once more, a grand refurbishment of the resort’s rooms and public spaces. Sir Royston explains his mission: “… to meld poetry and modernity into a resort that perfectly blends into its environment

whilst offering all the luxuries of one of the world’s finest resorts.” The man has succeeded royally!

Rain, Rain, Don’t Go Away

A visit to the Grand Etang Lake and Forest Reserve was spectacular. This is a popular area in Grenada for hiking and trekking in the rainforest high up in the mountains of the island’s interior. Consisting of elfin woodlands on the slopes of the reserve’s central mountains, the focal point is Grand Etang Lake, which fills the crater

of one of the island’s extinct volcanoes. Although we had monsoon conditions for most of our excursion, we were still able to wander about Concord Waterfall as it cascaded into the azure pools below. The landscape is lush, luxuriant and fertile, so considering that the almost daily deluge, which lasts just a short time is largely responsible for this jungley beauty, we now looked out of our rain-streaked van windows with an open and welcoming heart.

For the Birds

A hop, skip and a jump across the road from the Spice Island Resort is the Blue Horizons Garden Resort owned by Arnold Hopkin, Sir Royston’s brother, who manages his property with equally skilled stewardship. This is a family-friendly resort providing free babysitting and a very compelling attraction: kids eat free! This is a Green Globe benchmarked property that has an aviary for tropical birds including the Violet-Eared Dove, Grenada’s national bird. This tiny

creature was almost brought to extinction during the ravages of the 2004 hurricane but thanks to a protection program that the resort has in place, it’s making a comeback. We dined one evening with Mr. Hopkin at his gourmet restaurant La Belle Creole and were charmed as he pointed out the various dove nests he cares for on the restaurant’s terrace.

Something’s Fishy

It’s not well-known but each and every Friday, Grenada hosts a traditional fish fry in the small town of Gouyave (Fish Town). There are row upon row of vendors offering all sorts of fish delights – a dream for seafood lovers. This is a great way to get familiar with the island’s food – and to meet the locals.

Sunrise, Sunset

There was no better way to end this Grenadian idyll than with a sunset champagne cruise. We sipped bubbly and savored the sunset as we sailed along the coast of St. George (Grenada’s capital). Happily the sun

cooperated, coloring the sky in hues of gold, pink and finally in silver as it bid us adieu. Grenada is a land of plenty and its very self-sufficiency has kept it largely untouched, hurricanes or no. Its endless views of the sea, the lone fisherman walking along, swinging his catch, the smell of chicken sizzling on barbecues – it’s all still here. Residents say that Grenada is the Caribbean’s best kept

Yonkers Hires 50 “New” Firefighters BY HEZI ARIS Do You See What I See?    It seems Yonkers City Hall may have finally figured it out… or did they? You be the judge. Notice was received this Tuesday morning that 50 Probationary Firefighters were hired and that they would be sworn in at the Riverfront Library this day at 3:00 p.m. The radio show concluded, the first City Council Rules meeting later in the evening, it was an auspicious occasion I wanted to attend. The Riverfront Auditorium was packed with family members, colleagues, and friends at attendance to celebrate 50 Firefighters becoming members of a larger and proud department; the Yonkers Fire Department (YFD). The pride of family, family names, neighborhood friendships all coalesced at this celebration and many others kept private. Knowledge of each other, family, and respect for the department was undeniable; you could not help taste it – and it was sweet. And that is when reality set in… Yonkersites are sure to remember that the City of Yonkers (CoY) had on February 15, 2013 hired 33 new Firefighters. Interestingly enough that group was hired

off a Civil Service Exam that was to expire by the end of April 2013 On the very day they completed their studies at the Fire Academy, in June 2013, there were still over 25 vacancies at the YFD. Over the course of the past several months, the YFD lost another 20 Firefighters who retired; due in large part to the additional overtime burden that was required because of the long-term staffing shortages suffered in the YFD. The number of vacancies was again hovering at unbearable levels; the tally was now 45 vacancies. Perhaps City Hall has wised up this go-round. They hired approximately 5 extra new Firefighters so they can in the near future fill upcoming vacancies that will occur during the four months of training and the following 2 or 3 months after they graduate. Prior to that date, the last person hired will fill the last vacated position, and any “extras” can be used to reduce overtime further. Even so, there is a wrinkle that has surfaced in this telling. Back in February 2012, Mayor Mike Spano knew that two of his nephews were on the “new” Firefighters Civil Service Exam list and if he delayed hiring the necessary 45 Firefighters back in early 2012, the “old” list would expire,

and he could then hire his nephews off of the “new” list. Unbeknown to me, Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano has in this circumstance “planned” to get them hired. It was so wellplanned, it would make for a great TV show. Had Mayor Spano hired 45 Firefighters back in 2012 we would then have brought staffing to its fullest and it would likely have taken another few years before another class would need to be hired in which his nephews could at last be hired. Plan “B” did not earn much support; forward thinking, and resolute resolve engaged the first plan, Plan “A”, that has unfurled in its entirety today. As good as the “plan” was, there was a flaw unforeseen. Scrutiny and the resultant political cacophony and pressure rattled the Spano Administration and Mayor Spano was pushed into hiring a class in February 2013, albeit it a smaller one than intended and needed. A new list would be brought forward in April 2013 just a few months before the new list with the Spano nephews on it would be released. Editor’s Note: This is the smoking gun with a few bullets found missing. So Mayor Mike Spano hires as few Firefighters as possible in February 2013, awaiting with foreknowledge the list that

comes out in April 2013 which includes his two nephews, which brings us to today, September 3, 2013, the day Yonkers City Hall hires 50 “new” Firefighters among which are Mayor Mike Spano’s two nephews. In reviewing historical records available at short notice, this reporter could not find a time during which the Yonkers Fire Department had ever hired two classes in the same year; much less within the same 12-month period. Yonkersites know full well this sort of conduct is not fiscally prudent; it makes absolutely no financial sense whatsoever. Then again there are “extenuating circumstances” to which the “Friends and

Family” paradigm reigns supreme. Hey, we’re talking family here. Editor’s Note: Blame and responsibility is not to be shouldered by the two Spano nephews; it is to be shouldered exclusively on Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano who has squandered taxpayer funds to scam this process for concerns that extend beyond the interests of CoY. Does this conduct fall under the term “fiduciary responsibility”?I know it does NOT. So what happened? Overtime shot through the roof! It began during the waning days of former Yonkers Mayor Phil Amicone and continues to the present under present Mayor Mike Spano, and will continue for the next 4 months until the 50 Firefighter Probies graduate from the academy The City of Yonkers, under the aegis of Mayor Mike Spano is squandering money in short supply in CoY by putting two classes through the academy back to back; costs are likely to accrue to about $250,000 wastefully spent, because Yonkers residents who took an examination were not hired when they should have been hired and some were never hired. This is how their “plan” disintegrated at the taxpayer’s expense; perhaps if it were from Mayor Spano’s pocket it would have been a fiscally prudent “plan”. At least it would have been at his expense rather than the taxpayer. This “corruption” occurred because

Ossining Housing Settlement Update By CATHERINE BORGIA and SUE DONNELLY Ossining has a long history of tackling community issues with collaboration and creativity, including the need for housing affordable to those at or below of our county’s median income of $90K for a family of four. Many of us who have been involved in the issues surrounding affordable housing were surprised when James Johnson, the appointed monitor who acts as an intermediary between Westchester County and the Federal government for the 2009 Affordable Housing Settlement, indicated in his preliminary zoning analysis that the Town of Ossining was one of six

communities in Westchester that might have some zoning codes that could be impeding affordable housing. Because this conclusion is so contrary to Ossining’s values, we were very gratified to have two productive meetings with Mr. Johnson and his staff , representatives of HUD, and town planning and fiscal staff. We discussed his preliminary report and were able to give him additional insight into our town. We had frank conversations about Ossining’s history and our community values. Ossining has always had housing that was affordable to people at many income levels, and a culture that supports housing diversity. In the past decade, both the Town and Village of Ossining passed and amended zoning laws to create additional affordable housing at

different income levels. IFCA, working in conjunction with our other safety net organizations, has spent decades working to increase the amount and variety of homes. Ossining works collaboratively with the county to explore every affordable housing opportunity. Mr. Johnson and his team left with a deeper understanding of the community and our commitment to affordable housing. It is so important to have these types of collaborative meetings at the local level in order to give Mr. Johnson, HUD and other stakeholders an accurate and complete picture of affordable housing in our communities. Westchester County entered willingly into this settlement, in order to avoid further court battles and the possibility of fines of up to $500 million dollars. We know the ongoing

working relationship between the County Administration and HUD/ Mr. Johnson has been rocky and not completely productive. It’s time for reasonable people to work together and hash out differences, consider every point of view in order to learn from each other, and work in good faith to complete the terms of the settlement. this obligation on or before schedule. Although no new affordable housing has been sited yet in the Town of Ossining that will count in the 750 total, several possibilities have been explored. Currently, affordable housing units are being build in the Town that comprise 25% of an ongoing housing development; however these three units will not count in the 750 goal because they had received approvals prior to the settlement agreement. Create a model affordable housing ordinance and promote its passage in the

settlement communities. The Town of Ossining had an affordable housing ordinance that was very close to the model ordinance, and passed amendments to conform to the model ordinance in 2011. Pass a county law prohibiting discrimination of renters based on the source of the income used to pay rent, including federally funded programs, disability payments, etc. This law passed earlier in 2013 and was signed by the County Executive Complete a zoning analysis that includes an analysis of impediments to affordable housing in Westchester County.

This is the point about which Westchester has not been able to agree with HUD. In his role as intermediary, Mr. Johnson produced the zoning analysis referenced above, in collaboration with Pratt Institute. The report is available on the County’s website: www.westchestergov.com. The Town of Ossining is continuing its work with Mr. Johnson to update his analysis of our community. We pledge to continue to serve the people of Ossining by continuing to work together in the best interest of all residents. Newspapers continue to report on progress being made to build a new Tappan Zee Bridge. Anticipating jobs needed to build this new Tappan Zee Bridge, a conference was held in late July at the Monroe College King Graduate School of Business in New Rochelle, New York. There was optimism in the air for the construction trades as this conference brought together minorities, women, veteran workers, and businesses. The conference called “a bridge to a bridge” promoted jobs for the new “Tappan Zee Bridge Project and beyond.” Jim Coleman, Executive Director of Westchester County Industrial Development Agency and Minority and Women’s Business Enterprise (jcoleman@ westchestergov.com) urged those looking for employment to “get registered with the County today.” Web sites were named: Westchestergov.com and EmpireBIDSystems.com. Bidding outside of a resident’s immediate city or town area was urged as long as you “can deliver” on the job specifications. Focus was shed on a Mount Vernon couple as an example. Darlene and James White began operating their business with an infusion of County contracts only nine months ago. That business is now grossing $168,000 per year. It was further suggested that if you

are lacking computer skills, then hiring someone would be beneficial. You have to be fast when bids are offered. You must know your product and its current market to be successful. Bookkeeping is also important because suppliers expect their money when they deliver. Interest in creating more jobs is Westchester is great and when there is more business there are more jobs. Another example given of a successful business is Samela’s Mexican Restaurant in Port Chester, New York, who took no tax breaks. One of his products is being sold now in a number of stores. Coleman continued that not having a business plan is like driving without a route plan. SCORE is a “Service Corps of Retired Executives” who volunteer to help small business start-ups to thrive. Other services available in Westchester include the Professional Development Center of Westchester Community College (Ann. Small business administration. To loud applause, Coleman asserted there is “no reason for you to be poor.” The

County Executive, he stated is committed to these programs and has paid for the fliers that were distributed at this meeting. Coleman continued to encourage everyone there, saying, “Let’s replicate success.” Following Coleman’s presentation, Omar Small, New Rochelle’s Assistant City Manager explained how to conduct business with New Rochelle. Minority and women’s businesses are welcome and the County adds to the places with which the City can do business. Richard St. Paul, one of the sponsors of this program, said the Tappan Zee Bridge with eight lanes will be the widest bridge in the world. It will be a bridge built “by New Yorkers for New Yorkers.” He credited Governor Cuomo for moving this project along. Dredging began in August 2013. There will be many job opportunities: administrative, construction trades, engineering, financial accounting, safety personnel, among others. Throughout the meeting it was emphasized that to bid on contracts, the person or principal must be registered. Ann Trenckle, representing Helmets to Hard Hats, emphasized no skills were necessary to get into this program. Veterans with no skills can get into an apprenticeship program. They can get “semi-union jobs.” She stated, “If you’re a veteran, I’ll send you for a job.” All types of workers are needed for putting up buildings, e.g. electricians.

Judicial Qualification Commission Rates Justice Angiolillo “Highly Qualified” BROOKLYN, NY -- The Independent Judicial Election Qualification Commission of the State of New York Appellate Division has rated Justice Daniel Angiolillo “Highly Qualified” for his re-election as Justice of the New York Supreme Court, 9th Judicial District. been a strain on Yonkers for too long. The fact that no vision has yet been expressed by our present Mayor Mike Spano is scandalous. Prior administrations may claim to have expressed a vision toward which their focus was trained, but a mirage is not a vision. Every day is a propitious day to assess our lot; every day demands focus and effort. One cannot tarry, much less not conjure and measure that which has failed and strive, to one’s best ability to explore for remedy. Governance, as benevolent as it may purport to be is deficient if it cannot gather the best talents toward envisioning a purpose for any city. To have the ability to be concerned about other cities, we must first meet the needs of our city. Yonkers needs to muster and engage all the resources at our disposal to meet the need of our city. To do so requires purpose and resolve and the compassion that speaks to the concerns for Yonkers rather than shrinking from communicating the issues and the possible remedies. A timeline that speaks to each concern must also be doable and achieve inclusive support among Yonkersites. Every community must be engaged; not some. Economic development must be open to public scrutiny;

there is no rationale for executive sessions that refuse acknowledgment of contracts and agreements from the public interest. Perhaps certain monetary factors must be kept secret for proprietary purposes, but it all. Percentage figures over sales tax revenue should not; neither other caveats that restrain such revenue from seeing the light of day. Education as forwarded to them all by the Commission of inquiry before the summer? How does the YBoE intend to correct teaching methods and student expectation with regard to the failed methodology that eviscerated test scores among the Big Five Schools this year? What is the methodology and what are the expected results to which a new teaching method may be incorporated? Let’s have a 5-year proposal; let it be scrutinized every year. No school age pupil has years to spend while the Yonkers Public School Districts makes excuses as they experiment with their future prospects. And when will the City of Yonkers consider talent from within our 200,000 population to be allowed to step forward to share their best efforts for Yonkers without begrudging them their worth by dismissing their talents out of hand. When will the Yonkers Board of Ethics, a notable misnomer, ever issue an agenda that speaks to the issues over which they have weighed? When will their conduct be such that their door will be open to the public good? What is the resolution to the theft of services by former Yonkers Democratic Majority Leader Patricia McDow? What was learned? How was she able to depart without making CoY whole? Must the Yonkers City Charter be changed to deny any and every elected official the theft of services taken by Ms McDow?
