From the President & CEO The Guide

Dear Member,

February is Black History Month, and on WTTW we’ll premiere Building/Blocks: Architecture of Chicago’s South Side, a special hosted by architecture photographer and writer Lee Bey; Live from the Harris Theater: Adrian Dunn’s Emancipation, a multi-genre musical celebration of what it means to be Black and free in 21st century America; and NOVA: Star Chasers of Senegal, the story of a visionary astronomer in West Africa who attempts a high-stakes observation of a distant asteroid vital to a NASA mission. On wttw.com, meet Earl Wiley Renfroe, a pioneering Chicago orthodontist and the first Black professional to have an office in the Loop and learn about Father Augustus Tolton, the first Black Catholic priest in the U.S. and founder of a church on Chicago’s South Side. This month and throughout 2023, WTTW will launch FIRSTHAND: Life After Prison, the award-winning multiplatform, multi-year initiative focusing on the firsthand perspectives of people facing critical issues in Chicago. The project will offer an intimate look at the challenges and opportunities facing people returning to society after spending time in prison, as they seek to restart their lives while carrying the stigma of a criminal record. On page 4, you’ll find an interview with documentary producer/director Mario Tharpe.

WFMT Presents will feature “Rediscovered Composers,” a concert by the BBC Philharmonic that includes Margaret Bonds’s Montgomery Variations, a seminal work about the civil rights movement. The program also features pianist and scholar Samantha Ege, a leading interpreter of music by underrepresented composers. LaRob K. Rafael will curate and present music by Black composers on his weekday morning Black Music Spotlight and Listening to Singers will feature a tribute to opera legend Leontyne Price, curated and co-hosted by Grammy Award-winning baritone Kenneth Overton. On wfmt.com, with Mavis Staples performing at Symphony Center this month, we’ll take a look back at the iconoclastic Chicago singer and civil rights champion’s greatest moments on and off stage, and share five new opera titles by Black composers, including Errollyn Wallen and Nkeiru Okoye.

Finally, please make sure to watch the WTTW News Mayoral Candidate Forum on Tuesday, February 7 – live streaming on the PBS Video app, wttw.com, Facebook, and YouTube at 7:00 pm and on Chicago Tonight at 10:00 pm.

On behalf of all of us at WTTW and WFMT, I hope you enjoy everything we have to offer this month, and thank you for making it possible.

Sincerely,

Sandra Cordova Micek President & CEO
