PROLOGUE

EDUCATION South China Agricultural University (SCAU) Major: Architecture Degree: Bachelor of Engineering GPA: 3.85/5.0

After studying for five years, I realize that the core factors in learning architecture are to comprehend the relationship between structures and environment, to collaborate both, and to enable it to reflect the essence of era and culture. Architecture and urbanism have functioned, in my study and daily life, as the magnifier that I could observe the world more carefully and Sensitively. Architecture to me, a combination of inherent space and social background. The process of architectural design is to transform the attitude of background and re-de fining the spatial order with architectural element. This portfolio contain selecting work of my undergraduate course and competition. I want to expression my thinking to Architecture and Urban, at the mean times, I known that my thinking at this stage with limit experiment is immature. Then I seek the opportunity to learn more experience more and feel more.

While rapid urbanization brings opportunities to society, it also stimulates the contradiction between various resource needs and supply. In recent years, land resources have been a hot topic, followed by housing problems, the lack of urban public space as well as the shortage of cemetery resources. The new cemetery serves as public facility in each community which can contribute to the surrounding activity, enhance space experience and sense of participation and move out of the fear. Closing to the river, the site is in the park of Chebei village in the city. We integrate the new cemetery with the community park in order to connect people’s action and emotion, we have designed different kinds of spaces such ad sacral places, memorial space, gathering space and public recreating space. It is useful for increasing the likelihood of participant as the generator of city. Based on the habit of residents and considering traditional mortise and tenon joint structure, we try to create community life scene under the big banyan by using tree-dimensional grid structure. The design of lighting cemetery casket aims to stimulate the interaction between people and the dead as well as lighting up the community.

The village in the city is caused by the rapid development of urbanization in China. After the reform and opening up, Guangzhou, as one of the cities with rapid economic development, attracted people from all over the country to work here. Some villages that were originally in the suburbs have become areas close to the CBD because of urban expansion. It provides convenient transportation and lowcost accommodation for migrant workers. As demand continues to rise and land in the village is limited, building density continues to increase, while public space continues to decrease, and the quality of living continues to decline. The reason for the existence of urban villages is that urbanization does not disrupt the residential structure and social structure of rural communities. Some traditional buildings, traditional activities, traditional festivals, although some have been defeated, but most of them have been preserved, such as: ancestral Temple, Dragon Boat Race, Qingming Sacrifice.

Beside Living, We Can’t Afford Death Either

In Guangzhou, the cemetery has gradually become one of the hot topics in society. Because in recent years, with the development of urbanization, the urban population has proliferated and land resources have become increasingly scarce. At the same time, the government no longer allows citizens to freely bury, so the price of the cemetery is getting higher and higher, and even the unit price exceeds the price of commercial housing. People worry that the cemetery will become a new “luxury”. Traditional Tomb

As one of Guangzhou historical district, Xiguan District witness the rapid development in the 20th century. It is common for young people to move away from old community to modern house with better living condition and senior citizens live alone. The old community are destroyed because lack of protection. The phenomenon that most valuable building sold or rented for storage, reflect not only the intergenerational gap but also cultural dislocation. Meanwhile, the tourism influence the regional population structure, bringing new groups like tourists and workers. Does the historical house have greater value as a bridge between people, the past and the future? This project conceives a new living mode: with historical buildings as the medium, living structure would be replaced by the mixed community, the home care would be replaced by the social care. It intends to use valued building as reminder container for friendly transaction between pensioner and visitor. That is, the senior citizen living alone would like to provide both private and social space for tenants, who need to spend time and work with the pensioners in exchange. Community relationship will be more open, mutually supportive and healthy.

To c h a n g e t h e housing allotment system, housing commercialization was experimented by the government. And then a small part of young groups began to move to apartments.

The real estate industry of China had a rapid development. Hence more and more people chose to live in high-rise apartments for better living conditions while the aged and the youth stayed.

T h e a r e a o f B a mboo-houses have been defined to historical districts in modern Guangzhou. By now, a part of them has be rent out for some workers living with original residents.

It is an expectation that in the future, traditional nuclear families consisting of three generations living together will possibly be replaced by housing mix.

03 DIVERSIT Y ON BORDER A Community Between The University And The City

Date: Jan.2019 Personal Work Site: Tianhe District Guangzhou, China

South China Agricultural University covers an area of 5.52 square kilometers and has a very long campus boundary line. The campus used to be the farmland far form city center. For various reasons such as security and university division it formed a closed campus boundary. With the development of the city, the necessity of speration is falling, while the need of communication is increasing. The site is an abandoned area between the campus and the city. The north is a beautiful wetland park of campus, the south is residential area and a commercial area. The new building could be the bond blurring the border and provide the space that everyone could share.
