DIRECTIONS TO FALLEY FIELD

Washburn University is in Topeka, Kan., at the intersection of 21st Street and Washburn Avenue. Falley Field is located on campus at the corner of SW Durow Road and SW Jewell Avenue. Parking is available in the lot directly across from the the ballpark or in Lot 7 located on at SW 19th Street.

The Washburn Athletic Communications Office located in room 253 of Whiting Fieldhouse. Office hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday though Friday. Phone: 785-670-1948; Fax: 785-670-1091.

MEDIA CREDENTIALS & PASSES

Media credentials are available to personnel from accredited media outlets by contacting Joy Smith, Assistant Athletic Communications Director, at (785) 670-1948. Please notify of your attendance at least three days in advance to guarantee a seat in the press box.

Radio stations wishing to broadcast from Falley Field should make broadcast requests through the athletic communications office. All radio/internet broadcasts will take place in the pressbox. Wi-Fi and a limited number of phones lines are available in the press box as well. Complete stat packets will be available approximately 15 minutes after the completion of the game.

INTERVIEW POLICIES

Postgame interviews with Harley Douglas and players are available to media personnel after his brief meeting with the team immediately following the game. Media will be accompanied to the third base dugout to speak to coaches and players.Interview requests during the week on non-game days are asked to be arranged through the athletic communications office.

PHOTOGRAPHY/VIDEO GUIDELINES

Per NCAA and Washburn University Athletic policies, photographers are limited to shooting in the designated areas. Credentials photographers are allowed to along the interior fencing on the first and third base sides, while non-credential personnel must remain behind the backstop netting or exterior fencing. Please contact the athletic communications office with questions.

Started all 55 games at shortstop finished the season batting .299 and was second on the team in hits (67), runs (56), doubles (16), walks (22), multi-hit games (23). and sacrifice flies (four) also led the team and was seventh in the MIAA with seven sacrifice bunts was a single shy of hitting for the cycle at Newman (March 5) and finished the game 3-5 with four runs scored and four RBI ... in the NCAA Central Region Tournament against Northeastern State (May 20), went 3-4 with a pair of doubles, two runs, and two RBI.

PRIOR TO WASHBURN:

Played at Seminole State College (Okla.) for two seasons ... three-year letterwinner at Charles Page High School (Sand Springs, Okla.).

PERSONAL:

Son of Scott and Stephanie Watkins ... has one brother, Clay ... his father played baseball collegiately at Seminole State and Oklahoma State before being drafted and playing for the Minnesota Twins ... majoring in physics.

Started 26 of the 29 games he played finished the year batting .295 with 23 hits, two homers, four doubles, and a triple ... scored 25 times and recorded 16 RBI ... drew 15 walks and was hit 10 times ... hit his first collegiate home run at Northeastern State (March 14) and finished the day 2-5 with two RBI and three runs scored.

Made five appearances with one start went 2-3 at the dish in his collegiate debut on Feb. 20 at Regis

Pitched in eight games with three starts and finished with a 4.50 ERA and a 1-1 record struck out 19 batters scattered across 18 innings of work ... picked up the win in his second start of the season against New Mexico Highlands (Feb. 12) after going five innings and allowing three runs on three hits and a walk while striking out a career-high seven ... at Emporia State (April 14), pitched a clean seventh frame and struck out the side.

IN 2021:

Worked nine innings and recorded nine strikeouts in six appearances out of the bullpen ... turned in 3.2 quality innings against Newman (April 30), allowing one run, two hits, and struck out five.

IN 2020:

Made six relief appearances ... finished with 15 strikeouts in 13.1 innings pitched ... tossed four innings against Northwestern Oklahoma (Feb. 6) and struck out a personal-best five batters recording his first save.

PRIOR TO WASHBURN:

Played baseball for the Burke High School Bulldogs in Omaha, Neb.

Started all 55 games in center field for the Ichabods finished the year batting .272 and recorded 58 hits (fifth on the team), six home runs, 15 doubles (t-third on the team), and four triples (first on the team/10th in MIAA) ... drove in 27 runs and scored 43 times (fifth on the team) ... was second on the team with 11 stolen bases ... on March 5 at Newman, was 3-4 with a double, walk, two stolen bases, three RBI, and two runs scored ... against No. 4 Central Missouri (April 2), went 3-3 with a walk, home run, three RBI, and scored twice.

PRIOR TO WASHBURN:

Started collegiate career at Barton Community College in 2019-20 ... played baseball at Norman North High School (Okla.).

Son of Jeff and Shanda Scott majoring in integrated studies.

IN 2022:

Pitched in 17 games with 10 starts and finished with a 2-4 record, a save, and a 7.83 ERA ... was fourth on the team in both innings pitched (43.2) and strikeouts (56) ... recorded nine strikeouts in his victorious outing against Northern State (Feb.19), where he went five innings and allowed just two runs on three hits, two walks, and a HBP.

IN 2021:

Made 13 appearances on the mound with 12 starts and recorded the second-most strikeouts (64) and the third-most innings (48.0) on the team finished with the fourth-lowest opposing batting average in the MIAA (.200) ... earned his first win against Emporia State (April 9), going five innings and allowing two runs and four hits while striking out six ... recorded a season-high 10 strikeouts in 4.1 innings pitched at Pittsburg State on March 14.

PRIOR TO WASHBURN:

Started his collegiate career at California State - Northridge before transferring to College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita, California ... his summer ball team, the Jamestown Jammers, won the 2018 Perfect Game Collegiate League Championship ... was a member of the Comfort High School baseball squad.

Made 13 appearances out of the bullpen and finished the year with a 2-1 record and a 3.38 ERA recorded 14 strikeouts in 13.1 innings on the mound earned his first win at Northwestern Oklahoma (Feb. 12) and allowed one run on two hits in two innings of work ... struck out a season-high three batters in two scoreless innings at Emporia State (April 15) and surrendered only one walk and hit.

IN 2021:

Tossed 6.1 innings across seven relief appearances and struck out nine ... worked two scoreless innings at Missouri Western on Feb. 27, allowing just one single and two walks while striking out three ... named to the MIAA Academic Honor Roll.

Was a three-year member of the Boulder High School baseball squad ... helped the Panthers to backto-back playoff appearances.

Two-year member of the Indian Hills Community College (Centerville, Iowa) baseball squad ... helped the team to an appearance in the Junior College World Series his sophomore year ... played 23 games in 2021 and finished with a .406 batting average (26-for-64) with seven doubles, 18 runs scored, and 13 RBI ... named to the dean's list twice ... played baseball at Christian Brothers College High School (St. Louis, Mo.).

Two-year member of the Northern Oklahoma College (Enid, Okla.) baseball squad ... in the 2021 season, played in 51 games at first base and had a .358 batting average with 58 hits, 14 doubles and seven homers finished with a .574 slugging percentage and a .488 on base percentage helped the team to a third place finish at the regional tournament was named to the Vice President's Honor Roll played baseball at Charles Page High School (Sand Springs, Okla.).

A varsity letter winner for the Mountain Vista High School ... as a freshman, was called up to the varsity squad midway through the season and the team went on to win the 5A state championship title with a record of 26-1 the championship team finished the season ranked sixth in the nation by MaxPreps the following season, the Golden Eagles advanced to the Final Four of the state playoffs and finished with a 23-4 record as a senior, he worked 40 innings and finished with a 5-1 record and 34 strike outs ... helped the team to another state championship title with a 17-5 mark ... threw a complete game in the Elite Eight game and closed out the championship game.

PERSONAL:

Son of Tim and Sandi Huiatt ... has one brother, Brennan ... majoring in economics.

Played in seven games making two starts recorded his first hit in his collegiate debut on Feb. 20 at Regis, going 1-3 at the plate with a walk, two RBI, and one run scored ... named to the MIAA Academic Honor Roll.

Sat out the season as a redshirt ... named to the MIAA Academic Honor Roll.

PRIOR TO WASHBURN:

Two-year letterwinner and starting catcher at Ralston Valley HS (Arvada, Colo.) twice named to the Jefferson County All-Conference Team ... as a junior (2018) batted .371 and posted a .473 on-base percentage and fielded at a .994-clip from summer ball for Premier West from 2015-18 in summer 2018, registered a .415 average, .529 on-base percentage and was .984 fielding.

PERSONAL:

Son of Michelle and Wyatt has a siblings, Laird (brother) and Fairn (sister) majoring in psychology.

IN 2022:

Made 13 starts on the mound and finished with a 2-4 record, a 5.96 ERA, and 45 strikeouts was third on the team in innings pitched at 54.1 in his second start of the season, struck out eight in five innings of work against Oklahoma Baptist (Feb. 13) and allowed just two runs on seven hits and zero walks ...earned his first win against Newman (March 6) after going five innings and allowing five runs, four earned, on eight hits and five strikeouts.

PRIOR TO WASHBURN:

Was a two-year member of the Barton Community College baseball squad ... in his freshman year, appeared in six games and picked up two wins before the remainder of the season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic ... was a redshirt on Wichita State's team in 2018 ... played three seasons of baseball at Blue Valley North ... also competed in swimming all four years of high school.

PERSONAL:

Son of Stephen and Shannon Brimacombe ... his sister Grace was a swimmer at the University of Indianapolis ... his brother Matt plays baseball at Alvin Community College ... his father was a kicker on the KU football team ... majoring in integrated studies.

Made 19 relief appearances and finished with a 1-0 record and a 4.74 ERA in 19.0 innings of work... his 19 appearances tied for the second-most on the team struck out 27 on the year earned first win at Northeastern State (March 14) and after 3.1 innings in relief and allowed four runs on five hits with two strikeouts ... struck out a season-high six in his Ichabod debut vs. New Mexico Highlands (Feb. 12) and worked two scoreless innings and did not allow a hit or walk.

IN 2021:

Sat out the season as a redshirt.

PRIOR TO WASHBURN:

A three-year varsity member of the Hastings baseball team and has helped the Tigers to a combined 49-21 record … received an all-state honorable mention nod as a junior and earned a place on the conference all-academic team … as a sophomore, the team placed third in the Nebraska Class B championship … also played three seasons of football and four seasons of basketball … in his junior basketball season, was an all-state honorable mention by both the Lincoln Journal Star and the Omaha World Herald as well as being named to the Greater Nebraska Athletic Conference all-conference team and all-academic team as he finished third in rebounding and 10th in field goal percentage in all of Nebraska Class B … also earned several football honors his junior season as he was selected to the B-3 all-district first-team, all-conference and all-academic team and was an all-state honorable mention by the Omaha World Herald … a member of the Hastings American Legion baseball team … a member of the National Honor Society and is an honor roll student.

Son of Josh and Renee Markert … has one sister, Emma … his father played baseball at Bradley University and was in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization … his grandfather coached baseball at the high school level for more than 25 years … major is undeclared.

IN 2022:

Played in one game and made Ichabod debut on March 26 against Missouri Western as a pinch hitter.

PRIOR TO WASHBURN:

Started collegiate career at Cowley College in 2020-21 ... was a four-year member of the Bishop Carroll High School baseball team as a junior, finished the season with a .400 batting average and earned all-state honorable mention and all-city accolades.

PERSONAL:

Son of Brent and Lisa Holman ... has three siblings: Seth, Samantha, and Shane ... majoring in general business.

A four-year member of the Ponderosa High School baseball team was a first team all-state selection at first base his senior year and helped the Mustangs to a state championship title during the 2020 summer/fall league, he hit .429 with eight home runs and drove in 47 runs and also pitched 27 innings and finished with a 2.74 ERA and 29 strikeouts also competed in football his freshman year.

PERSONAL:

Son of John and Megan Lopez ... has one sister, Isabel ... his father played baseball at UMBC ... majoring in marketing.

Earned a place on the All-MIAA Second Team tied a team-high in wins and finished with a record of 5-2 and a 6.72 ERA ... his 16 starts was the most in a single season in Washburn history ... threw a team-high 75 innings (eighth in the MIAA) and was second on the squad with 84 strikeouts (fifth in the MIAA) ... won four-consecutive starts with victories over Missouri Western, No. 4 Central Missouri, Central Oklahoma, and Emporia State during that stretch ... on April 14 at ESU, he struck out a career-high 11 batters in his six innings of work and threw a one-hitter after the first inning.

IN 2021:

Tossed 14 innings in 10 relief appearances and finished with a 5.79 ERA and 17 strikeouts earned a save at Central Oklahoma (April 3) allowing one unearned run in 1.1 innings and one strikeout ... aside from one walk, worked two clean innings at Northwest Missouri (May 7) and struck out three ... made his debut at the plate with one at bat against Northwest Missouri (March 24).

IN 2020:

Sat out the season as a redshirt.

PRIOR TO WASHBURN:

Was a three year member of the Wichita East baseball team.

PERSONAL:

Son of Corey and Katie Steward ... has two brothers, Corey Jr. and Calvin, and two sisters, Carly and Cassidy ... twin brother, Calvin, is also a member of the Ichabod baseball team ... majoring in kinesiology.

COACHING STAFF

Former All-MIAA outfielder Harley Douglas enters his ninth season at the helm of the Washburn baseball program in 2023. Douglas was an assistant with the Ichabods for three years before he was named interim coach after the death of 35-year head coach, Steve Anson, following the 2014 season. He earned the permanent title of head coach on August 22, 2014.

In eight seasons, Douglas carries an all-time record of 194-174, including back-to-back 30-win seasons for the first time in nearly three decades while twice finishing as a top-four team in the MIAA tournament. In 2015, WU started the season 14-0, climbing to as high as No. 19 in the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) national poll (weeks four and five) and No. 6 in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) rankings (week four).

The 2022 season was one for the record books as the Ichabods went 33-22 overall and earned the program's first-ever berth in the NCAA Central Region Tournament. The Ichabods outscored their opposition, 450-381, and finished in the top-five in Washburn's single season record book in doubles (127/1st), hits (586/2nd), home runs (77/2nd), and runs (450/4th). The Washburn pitching staff also turned in a solid season and set the program's single season record in strikeouts (542) and in saves (15). Eight Ichabods earned All-MIAA honors and six Ichabods were named to the MIAA All-Tournament team at the conclusion of the conference postseason. Left-handed pitcher Dalton Huggins was named to the All-MIAA Second Team and the NCBWA All-Central Region Second Team while infielder Brett Ingram, who was also an All-MIAA Second Team selection, received CoSIDA Academic All-America Third Team honors.

In 2015, the Ichabods outscored opponents 382-298, posted a .306 combined team batting average and a 4.97 team ERA (fifth in the MIAA). In 2016, Washburn finished fourth in the conference in runs (437) and ERA (4.99) while being listed third in stolen bases (81) in 2017.

Douglas has coached a total of 47 All-MIAA selections, including one MIAA Player and Pitcher of the Year. He has also coached David Gauntt who earned All-America honors before being drafted by the Miami Marlins during the 2016 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft. Following the 2017 season, three-time MIAA selection Riley Krane signed a professional contact with the Windy City Thunderbolts of the Frontier League. In 2018, Douglas saw Josh Crosby earn second team NCBWA All-Region honors, while Darian Abram became the first Ichabod in seven seasons to earn all-district academic honors from CoSIDA.

Douglas is the first former Ichabod player to serve as Washburn’s coach and just the fifth person to coach the Ichabods since complete historical records were archived in the 1950s.

Douglas played for the Ichabods from 1997-2000. In 2000, as a senior, Douglas earned All-MIAA second team honors as an outfielder after posting a .417 average with 88 hits and setting a single-season record with 48 stolen bases - which still stands. Douglas' standout performance during his career has his name etched throughout the Washburn record book as he is listed third in school history in triples (11), fourth in stolen bases (74), 12th in runs scored (136), while his .362 career batting average, is the 14th highest in school history. The Ichabods went 110-81 and advanced to the MIAA tournament every season during Douglas’ four years.

After his All-MIAA career at Washburn, Douglas ventured into the professional ranks as he signed with the New York Mets organization in 2000 and spent time as a member of minor league organizations. Douglas began his professional career in the rookie league for Kingsport (Tenn.) before advancing to Single-A where he played for the Pittsfield (Mass.).

Following his baseball career, Douglas returned to Kansas where he served as a high school head coach before working as a special education teacher at Rossville Junior/Senior HS. Within the high school ranks, Douglas acquired a 124-58 record in his eight years. He started in 2003 at St. Marys HS where he went 67-28 in four years before taking the helm at Lansing HS from 2007-10 and put together a 57-30 there. Douglas steered his high school teams to top three finishes at state in five of his eight years as a head coach.

Douglas is a two-time Washburn graduate, receiving his Exercise Physiology degree in 2002 before earning an Education degree in 2004. He also earned a Master’s Degree in Adaptive Special Education from Emporia State in 2010.

He and his wife, Amy, have three daughters, Britnee, Ashley and Caylee, and a son, Dreyson.

ASSISTANT COACHES CONNOR CRIMMINS • FIFTH SEASON

Former Washburn two-sport standout Connor Crimmins is heading into his fourth season as the Ichabods' assistant coach after spending the prior two seasons on Brad Hill’s Kansas State staff serving as a graduate assistant.

In his first season with K-State, Crimmins helped the team to a 29-26 record, its first winning season since 2013. Before completing his tenure following the 2018 campaign, Crimmins saw a total of five Wildcats get selected during the MLB Draft including a trio of top 20 round picks in Jordan Floyd (10th round, Kansas City, 2017), Jake Scudder (16th round, Washington, 2017), and Drew Mount (16th round, Cincinnati, 2018).

During the past two summers, Crimmins has served as manager for the summer collegiate team, Topeka Golden Giants. In his first season in 2017, Crimmins was named Mid Plains Coach of the Year as he led the Golden Giants to a Cowdin Cup crown while also claiming a western division title. In 2018, he team were Cowdin Cup finalists and Mid Plains Regular-Season Champions. In both seasons with the Golden Giants, Crimmins coached the Mid Plains Player of the Year.

A four-year member of Washburn baseball, Crimmins finished his career with the Ichabods ranked among the program’s top 10 in sacrifice flies (4th/11), doubles (6th/38) and RBI (t-7th/132), while having the 12th-most at-bats (575). Crimmins started 171 of 191 in the Ichabod outfielder, including all 53 games as a senior.

During his final season in 2015, Crimmins batted .319 with 32 runs, 58 hits, 14 doubles and was tied for sixth among the league leaders with 53 RBI as the Ichabods went 33-20 overall and finished fourth in the MIAA at 22-14.

Crimmins also played four seasons with Washburn football at wide receiver and accounted for 10 touchdowns and amassed more than 900 yards. A four-time MIAA Academic Honor recipient in both baseball and football, the native of Topeka, Kan., graduated from Washburn in 2016 with a bachelor’s in marketing. At K-State, Crimmins earned his master's in college student development and counseling.

LANE HARVEY • FOURTH SEASON

The Sidney, Neb., native enters his first season as an assistant coach and fourth season overall after serving as a student and graduate assistant with the Ichabods after completing his senior season with Washburn in 2019. He started all 46 games at third base for the Ichabods and received an all-MIAA honorable mention nod with a .287 batting average while scoring 29 runs and knocking in 30 runs. He finished the season among offensive team leaders in doubles (t-1st), OBP (2nd), RBI (2nd), walks (2nd), at-bats (3rd), runs (4th) and hits (t-4th). Against Missouri Southern on March 9, 2019, he tied a program single-game record with with three doubles.

Harvey played his junior season at NCAA Division I school Morehead State where he was a member of the 2018 Ohio Valley Conference Tournament champions and appeared in Clemson Regional of the NCAA World Series. He played 13 games for the Eagles, registering five runs and three hits in 21 at-bats.

2022 SEASON IN REVIEW

The Ichabods were picked sixth in the 2022 MIAA Coaches Preseason Poll and went on to make their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance and earned the most victories since the 2016 season.

The Ichabods started the 2022 campaign in sunny Florida, where they faced stout competition and went 1-3. The following week, Washburn won all four of its games at the Northwestern Oklahoma State Festival in Alva, Okla. The Ichabods played their first home games and final non-conference series against Northern State and went 3-1 to hold an in-region record of 6-1 heading into MIAA play.

Washburn started the MIAA schedule with a 12 inning walkoff win against Fort Hays State and went on to sweep the Tigers in the conference-opening weekend. The Ichabods then run-ruled Emporia State in a non-conference midweek tilt before heading to Newman and sweeping that series to push their winning streak to eight in a row. In game one against the Jets, senior Parker Dunn hit three home runs in the 13-6 victory. Game two saw plenty of runs as well as the Ichabods won 22-19 after putting up 15 runs in the first four frames.

Washburn's first of only two shutouts for the whole season occurred in the series opener at Northeastern State, falling 4-0. Both offenses erupted in the next two games with Northeastern State winning game two, 24-23, in 10 innings and Washburn claiming the finale, 19-15. In game two against the RiverHawks, senior Brett Ingram hit three home runs, including the game-tying two-run shot in the top of the ninth. Ingram was the second Ichabod of the season to hit a trio of home runs in a single game, joining Dunn who accomplished the feat the previous weekend at Newman. Prior to the 2022 season, there had been only one other Washburn player since 1999 to hit three home runs in a game as Luke Manners recorded three on April 14, 2006 at Southwest Baptist. NSU held an 8-1 lead after four innings before WU came back to win, 19-15. The Ichabods hit seven home runs in both games, tying the program single game record.

The Ichabods returned for a quick midweek game against Northwest Missouri, winning 10-1, before taking two out of three games against Missouri Southern and Missouri Western to move to 21-8 on the year. Another midweek contest against Northwest Missouri was up next for Washburn, with the Bearcats winning this time, 7-0.

The month of April started at Falley Field hosting No. 4-ranked Central Missouri. The Mules won the first game, 9-3, before Washburn handed UCM its first conference loss and snapped its 19-game winning streak in seven inning fashion, 15-4. In game three, the Ichabods held a 3-2 lead with two outs when the Mules reached base with a hit by pitch and a walk and then cleared the bases with a three-run homer. UCM held on for the 5-3 win.

Washburn played its final non-conference game of the year against William Jewell. The Ichabods plated 10 runs in the fifth inning and run-ruled the Cardinals, 14-4. There were four MIAA series left in the regular season starting with Central Oklahoma, where the Bronchos took two out of three games. Washburn bounced back with a 7-5 midweek win over Northwest Missouri to win that overall series.

The Ichabods traveled down to rival Emporia State and won the first game, 15-4, in eight innings before falling the next day, 5-1. In the rubber match, Washburn broke the 1-1 tie in the top of the ninth with a pair of doubles to capture the come-from-behind win. The Ichabods closed out the regular season with a road series loss at Rogers State and a home series loss to Pittsburg State. Washburn won the second game of both series to spoil the sweep.

Eight teams earned a place in the MIAA postseason tournament, starting with the four higher seeds hosting a best-of-three series to determine who would advance to the double-elimination bracket the following weekend. Washburn was tabbed as the No. 5 seed and traveled to No. 4 seed Central Oklahoma. In the opening game, the Ichabods broke a tie ballgame with two runs in the top of the ninth against the MIAA Pitcher of the Year and then retired Central Oklahoma in order on three strikeouts in the bottom of the frame to capture the 7-5 victory. The Ichabods won the next game, 6-2, to advance on in the tournament for the first time since 2016.

The first matchup of the tournament for Washburn was against the tournament's top-seed and No. 3 ranked Central Missouri. The Ichabods cranked out five home runs and five doubles to defeat the Mules, 15-13. The following day, Washburn won, 8-5, against Northeastern State to advance to championship Sunday for the first time in six years.

SEASON REVIEW

Central Missouri reached the championship game from the loser's bracket for a rematch of game one. The Ichabods scored in each of the first six innings and led 12-6 heading into the seventh. The Mules rallied and scored once in the seventh and six in the eighth to go up, 13-12. Washburn's Tyler Clark-Chiapparelli started the bottom of the ninth with a double and then scored on a single to tie the game to send it to extras. In a nearly five hour contest, Central Missouri scored three times in the 10th and retired Washburn in order to force the "if necessary game". It was back-and-forth scoring early in the finale, but UCM went ahead by one in the third and then scored four in the fifth and never looked back to win the championship title with a 10-5 decision. Six Ichabods were voted to the conference all-tournament team: Easton Bruce, Clark-Chiapparelli, Parker Dunn, Brett Ingram, Connor Scott, and John Cross.

Washburn had been ranked eighth in the NCAA Central Region standings heading into the final MIAA Tournament weekend, but the Ichabods still had to wait until Selection Sunday to find out if they would be one of the eight teams in the region to continue their season. On May 15, the Ichabods heard their name called as the No. 7 seed and discovered they would be heading down to Magnolia, Ark. to compete in the program's first-ever NCAA postseason tournament.

In the first round game, Washburn scored nine runs on one of the best pitchers in the nation, but was unable to hold on as the NCAA Central Region No. 2 seed and No. 8-nationally ranked Southern Arkansas came from behind with seven runs in the eighth to win, 12-11. There was some déjà vu the following day as Washburn held a 13-7 lead after six and a half innings before MIAA foe Northeastern State answered with three runs in the seventh and two in the eighth to pull within one, 13-12, and then walked it off in the bottom of the ninth with two runs to end Washburn's season with a record of 33-22.

POSTSEASON HONORS

Eight Ichabods earned All-MIAA honors at the conclusion of the regular season. Brett Ingram, Dalton Huggins, and Casey Steward were all second team selections while the trio of Zion Bowlin, Tyler Clark-Chiapparelli, and Parker Dunn earned a place on the third team. First-year Ichabods John Cross and Cal Watkins received an Honorable Mention nod.

Huggins was named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association All-Central Region second team, becoming the seventh Ichabod to earn NCBWA All-Region honors and the first since Josh Crosby in 2018.

THE FACTOR

Two-time all-MIAA second team selection Brett Ingram finished his career with a spectacular senior season. Prior to the 2022 season, he had played in 63 games and had 63 hits, 38 runs scored in 197 at bats scattered across three seasons. In 2022, he started all 55 games and led the team with 83 hits (fourth-most for a single season at Washburn), 20 doubles (tied for second-most in a single season for Washburn), and 60 runs scored in 228 at bats for a team-best .364 batting average. He was also second on the squad in triples (three), home runs (12), and RBI (47).

HUGGY, THE ALL-TIME SAVES LEADER

After joining the Ichabods in the COVID-shortened 2020 season, Dalton Huggins ended his career as Washburn's all-time saves leader with 12. In 2022, he had five saves and a team-high 87 strikeouts.

GETTING IT DUNN

Parker Dunn capped his Washburn career third all-time in the program record book with 32 home runs. He led the team with 18 in 2022, which was fourth-most by an Ichabod in a single season. He also drove in a team-leading 62 RBI, the seventh-most in a single season at WU.

ICHABODS IN THE CLASSROOM

The squad also worked diligently in the classroom as there were 41 Ichabods, 79% of the roster, who earned a place on the MIAA Academic Honor Roll. After posting a GPA above 3.5 and receiving all-MIAA accolades, Ingram, Steward, and Cross earned a spot on the MIAA Scholar-Athlete list. Collectively as a team, Washburn also earned the ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award.

Individually, Ingram was recognized for his work in the classroom and on the field as he became the fourth Washburn baseball student-athlete to earn CoSIDA Academic All-America honors and the first to do so since Darian Abram also received a place on the third team in 2018. Former Ichabod Pat Colley was a two-time academic All-American (2000, 2001) and Andy Petz got a first team nod in 2011.

ABOUT THE MIAA

The Beginning and Early Years

The MIAA was established in 1912 as 14 schools joined together and created the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

In 1924, the Association reorganized to include only the five regional state universities. That same year, the MIAA announced it would sponsor football, basketball, and outdoor track and field. Over the next 30 years, the conference added the sports of tennis and indoor track and field.

The Start of the NCAA Era

The 1957 season started the movement of what we would now know as the MIAA as it joined the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) College Division. The first-ever national championship as an NCAA member was won by Southwest Missouri State in men’s golf. After the switch to the NCAA membership, the addition of sports for cross country, wrestling, swimming, and baseball soon followed.

Changes of the Eighties

Another monumental moment in league history came in 1981 and 1982. Ken B. Jones was appointed the MIAA’s first full-time commissioner in 1981. The following year the Association started sponsoring championships in women’s athletics for basketball, cross country, softball, tennis, track and field, and volleyball. Central Missouri made history when it became the first school in NCAA history to win national titles in the same year for both men’s and women’s basketball.

A decade that started with change, ended with change. In 1989, the MIAA expanded into the state of Kansas by adding Pittsburg State and Washburn. The two members became the first schools outside of Missouri to be added to the MIAA.

The Move Towards The Modern MIAA

The MIAA turned a new page on July 1, 1992, when the NCAA Division II conference changed its name from the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association to the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. The decision to make the change originated in 1989, when Pittsburg State and Washburn gained membership but didn’t occur until after Emporia State, the third Kansas school, earned membership.

In 1997, Ken B. Jones retired after 16 years as the Commissioner. Following his retirement, the MIAA CEOs named Ralph McFillen as the next Commissioner. Northwest Missouri football made history in back-to-back years. They were the first team in Division II history to be national champions with a 15-0 record during the 1998 season and in 1999

won the longest NCAA Championship game at any level with a four-overtime victory over Carson-Newman.

As a new Millenium took over, the MIAA continued to make history. On October 17, 2002, over 26,000 fans filed into Arrowhead Stadium to watch a rivalry game between Northwest Missouri and Pittsburg State. The game is the largest crowd to watch an MIAA event and one of the largest crowds in NCAA Division II football history.

In 2007, Commissioner Ralph McFillen announced his retirement and the MIAA CEO Council selected Jim Johnson to become the next Commissioner. A year into his leadership, the MIAA unveiled a new logo, moved the Baseball Championship to Community America Ballpark in Kansas City, Kansas and added women’s golf as a championship. The following year, the Association conducted TitleFest, crowning eight conference champions over a 10-week span all in the Kansas City area.

As the first decade of the 2000s came to an end, Jim Johnson stepped down as Commissioner and the CEO Council announced Dr. Bob Boerigter as the MIAA’s fourth fulltime Commissioner.

Expansion Era and National Championship Dominance

On July 29, 2010, the MIAA CEO Council voted to extend invitations to the University of Central Oklahoma and Northeastern State University to become members of the league. The expansion process was not quite over and on September 24, 2010, it voted to extend invitations to the University of Nebraska Kearney and Lindenwood University to become conference institutions starting in the 2012-13 season.

The 2012-2013 season saw the Association bring back the sport of men’s soccer and wrestling. Then in 2016, the conference added women’s bowling as a sport. February 2017 is when Mike Racy became the fifth Commissioner after Dr. Bob Boerigter announced his retirement.

With two members departing after the 2018-19 season, the MIAA again looked to expand for the 2019-20 season. The MIAA CEO Council wasted little time and announced that Newman University and Rogers State University would be admitted as associate members starting that fall season and became full members in summer of 2022. The two schools, already in the conference’s footprint, brought the league to 12 full-time members in the states of Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and Oklahoma.

Considered to be one of the best conferences in all of NCAA Division II, the MIAA backed that up in the 2010s. The Association won at least one national championship every season from 2008-09 to 2021-22. In the span of national dominance, 33 national titles were won including five teams going undefeated.

The first Ichabod to finish his career with an above .400 batting average, Wright hit .450 for his career and has gone done as one of the greatest power hitters in Washburn’s history. Wright played three seasons at Washburn, earning First Team All-American NAIA hoonrs in 1988 while being named the NAIA Player of the Year. He was also a three-time NAIA All-District 10 selection from 1986-88. Wright is the career leader in batting average (.450), home runs (64) and RBI (228) while sitting second in career hits (226). He also holds the top three spots on the single season home run list (26, 22 and 16).

Travis Stockham was the second Ichabod to finish his career with a .400 batting average after a dominant 1998 season where he hit .440 with .844 slugging and .556 on-base percentages. Stockham had 11 home runs, six triples and 12 doubles with 62 total hits in his senior season with Washburn. Stockham was named the team Most Valuable Player that season and also earned All-MIAA First Team honors in 1998.

George Darrow 1925 Ichabods Philadelphia Phillies (1934)

George Darrow played baseball at Washburn in 1925 at the age of 21 and broke into the Major League at age 30, playing one season for the Philadelphia Phillies in 1934. The left-handed pitcher made eight starts for the Phillies, going 2-6 with a 5.51 ERA with two complete games. He also made nine relief appearances with a save. During Darrow’s time at Washburn it was noted in the Kaw yearbook that he was “a southpaw and has the reputation of throwing a mean ball.”

After a stellar four-year career with the Ichabods baseball team from 1962-65, Jerry Robertson was drafted in the 27th round by the St. Louis Cardinals in June 1965. The pitcher got his first taste of the Major League when he played for the Montreal Expos in 1969 and then the Detroit Tigers in 1970. In 1971 he was traded to the New York Mets but injured his finger and soon had to quit playing.

In his one year with the Expos he went 5-16 and pitched in the team’s inaugural game. He started 27 games with three complete games and had a 3.67 ERA. The following year he made 11 relief appearances with Detroit.

Robertson started at WU in 1962 under the guidance of Marion McDonald and dominated opponents with his blazing fastball mixed with occasional curves. In 1964 he was instrumental in helping the Ichabods win the Central Intercollegiate Conference championship and rank fifth in the nation. He went 6-2 in 1965, his senior year with a 1.92 ERA and he struck out 94 batters, second most in Washburn history (through 2007). His career strikeout total of 162 is the fifth most.

He played minor league baseball for Sparky Anderson and in his first year he went 15-6.

Former Ichabod Steve Simpson pitched one season in the Major League after his four-year career at Washburn. The righty threw for the Ichabods from 1967-70 and then was drafted in the fourth round of the 1970 MLB Draft by the San Diego Padres.

Simpson pitched in A leagues his first two years in the Minor League. His third year, 1972, he advanced to AA Alexandria and appeared in 42 games before being promoted to the Padres at the age of 24 for the final portion of the season. He went 0-2 in nine Major League appearances.

Simpson was a strikeout pitcher his entire career. At Washburn he struck out 50 batters in 28 2/3 innings his freshman year and his senior year he struck out 90 batters in 64 1/3 innings. That total of 90 strikeouts in 1970 stood as a school single-season record until 1991 and he is still one of just three Ichabods to have 90 or more strikeouts in a season. His 1.12 ERA that season also stood as a school record for over 20 years.

In his Minor League career Simpson had 297 strikeouts in 288 innings and went 17-20 with a 4.22 ERA in 88 games.

In one year on the Washburn baseball team Davey Lopes put together the kinds of credentials that led to a very successful Major League career. In 1967 Lopes batted .380 for the Ichabods and slugged .793 with nine home runs, three doubles and four triples.

Lopes earned All-America honors that year and the following winter he earned the same honors as a guard on the basketball team. He shot 50 percent from the field and averaged 7.6 points a game.

Lopes was drafted in the 1968 amateur draft in the second round by the Los Angeles Dodgers and made his big league debut in 1972. By his second year he was an everyday player and in 1974 he went 5 for 5 with three homers against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field. In 1975 he led the National League with 77 steals, including 38 in a row, then a record.

In 1978 he played in his first of four straight All-Star games and the next year he hit a career-high 28 homers, then the third most ever by a second baseman. In 1980 he was the top vote getter for the All-Star game played at Dodger Stadium. In 1982 Lopes went from LA to Oakland where he played for three seasons. His first season with the A's, he and Rickey Henderson combined 158 stolen bases, the most by a pair of teammates.

He then finished his career with the Cubs for parts of three seasons and the Houston Astros for parts of two seasons. In 1985, at age 40 he hit a career-high .284 for the Cubs. He stole his 400th career base and hit his 100th homer that year.

In 1987 shoulder injury ended his playing career. He finished with 557 stolen bases, 155 home runs and a .263 batting average.

Lopes has since been a member of the coaching staff with the Texas Rangers, Baltimore Orioles and San Diego Padres, LA Dodgers and most recently Washington Nationals. In 2000, Lopes was named the manager for Milwaukee Brewers, a position he held until 2002 . He has a managerial record of 144-195.

Rick DeHart played two seasons at Washburn in 1990 and 1991 and then was signed by the Montreal Expos in 1992. He went 11-9 in 24 appearances at Washburn with 16 starts and a 2.74 ERA. His first year at WU he was 6-3 with 67 strikeouts and a 2.64 ERA as he earned second team all-MIAA honors and NAIA All-America honors.

After five years in the Minor Leagues he was advanced to the Triple A Ottawa Lnyx of the Expos organization. He made 43 relief appearances there before being promoted to the Expos midway through the season. He made his Major League debut with Montreal at Philadelphia on July 16, 1997.

DeHart pitched in 23 games his first season with Montreal and went 2-1 with a 5.52 ERA and 29 strikeouts in 29 and 1/3 innings. He made 26 appearances in 1998 and then three the next year before playing in the minors until 2003 when he signed with the Kansas City Royals and appeared in four games.

DeHart finished his four-year Major League career with a 2-3 record, a 6.14 ERA and 45 strikeouts in 63 innings. In 11 seasons in the minors he was 45-47 with a 3.78 ERA and 618 strikeouts.

From 2004-06 he played for the Schaumburg Flyers and in 2007 he played for the Kansas City T-Bones, both of the independent Northern League. He went 2-4 in 2007 with the T-Bones in six starts with a 4.62 ERA.

Jerad Head

After batting .380 for two seasons with the Ichabods and earning second team all-MIAA, Jerad Head played six seasons in the Cleveland Minor League organization before getting the call to the Majors late in 2011.

Head played in 10 games for the Indians and had a hit in his first at-bat. He ended up batting .125 for Cleveland and was granted free agency and played in the Detroit and Washington Minor League organizations until 2013. He is now a coach with the Washington organization.

After finishing his Washburn career in 2005, Head was signed as an amateur free agent by Cleveland on August 16, 2005. He played two full seasons in low A ball before moving up to Triple-A Buffalo in 2008 for three games. The following year he played the entire season for Double-A Akron and was named MVP of the championship series as the Aeros won the Eastern League Championship. He batted .282 with six home runs and 47 RBI.

He split time between Akron and Columbus in 2010 and again earned an MVP honor as Columbus won the Triple-A Championship game. In 2011 he batted .284 with 24 homers and 70 RBI in 114 games.

Head got the call up on August 28, 2011, and beat out a slow roller to second base in his first at-bat later that day. He played in eight straight games for Cleveland and then two more later in the year.

Head had a .267 batting average in seven seasons in the Minor Leagues. He had 99 home runs, 401 RBI and a .460 slugging percentage.

Head batted .419 in 2004 for the Ichabods, the ninth highest single-season total in school history. His .380 average in two years at Washburn is the eighth highest among players with 250 at-bats or more.

Head attended Hayden High School and graduated in 2001 and attended Kansas State in 2002, sitting the season out as a redshirt.

ABOUT WASHBURN

• Affordable education: Tuition is charged per credit. If you’re from Colorado, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma or Texas, you’ll pay resident tuition!

• Student/faculty ratio: 17:1. And 49 percent of undergraduate courses have fewer than 20 students.

• Courses taught by experienced faculty: 81 percent of Washburn’s full-time faculty members hold doctorates or the highest degree awarded in their discipline. No courses are taught by graduate teaching assistants. This means undergraduate students work directly with professors in courses, research and other projects.

• Academic options: More than 200 courses of study are offered.

• Nationally recognized: U.S News and World Report has recognized Washburn for its low student debt upon graduation.

• Graduate with experience: More than 1,000 Washburn students participate in an internship each year. In several majors an internship or other hands-on experience in a professional work environment is required for graduation.

• Public or private? Washburn is publicly funded, independently governed and state coordinated. In addition to funding from city and county taxes, Washburn receives financial support from the State of Kansas.

JuliAnn Mazachek

The Washburn University Board of Regents announced Jan. 11, 2023 that JuliAnn Mazachek has been chosen as the university's 15th president and first woman president.

Mazachek is returning to Topeka after serving as president of Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas since last May. Prior to her time at MSU Texas, Mazachek spent 30 years at Washburn University in various leadership roles.

Mazachek joined the Washburn family in 1992 as an assistant professor of accounting after earning a master’s degree in business administration and a doctorate in accounting from the University of Kansas. She rose through the Washburn University School of Business and became dean in 1998.

In 2002, Mazachek was named president and CEO of the Washburn University Alumni Association and Foundation. In that role, she oversaw all aspects of fundraising, alumni and stew- ardship programs in addition to the investment management of nearly $200 million in gift assets.

Mazachek was named interim vice president for academic affairs at Washburn University in 2016, a position she held permanently following a national search. As the chief academic officer, she provided leadership to Washburn University’s six colleges and schools, overseeing the University’s interdisciplinary programs, academic resources, support units, instructional programs and academic priorities.

During her career, Mazachek has won numerous awards and is considered a trusted leader in community affairs. While in Topeka, she served on several boards including Heritage National Bank, Greater Topeka Partnership and the Boy Scouts of America Jayhawk Area Council. She and her husband, Keith, have three adult children. Two of them are Washburn alumni, Garrett, ’14, and Kara, ’16, as are many members of their extended family.

Mazachek replaces Dr. Jerry Farley who served as the university’s president for 25 years before retiring Sept. 30, 2022.

2021-22 Season Flashback

Loren FerrE’ - Athletic Director

Loren Ferré became Washburn’s director of athletics in February of 1996 after a six-year appointment at Black Hills State University in Spearfish, S.D. Ferré is a dynamic leader who has implemented many internal changes within the athletic department since arriving on campus. While at Washburn all of the athletic facilities have been renovated or built from scratch including the $20 million indoor athletic facility, one of the best venues in the country.

He has put increasing scholarships and departmental fund-raising at the top of his list. He has been at Washburn for 36 of the 42 MIAA titles won and 113 of the 123 NCAA appearances in school history. In 2005, Ferré was named the Central Region Athletic Director of the Year.

At Washburn, Ferré has been instrumental in the establishment of a strong Ichabod Club support team and the raising of funds for athletic scholarships.

While at BHSU, Ferré was also director of the Donald E. Young Sports Fitness Center, a 172,000 square foot, $10.2 million facility. During his Black Hills tenure, the athletics department nearly tripled its outside revenue, including large increases in ticket sales and scholarship funding. All 10 varsity teams won a conference title in his final three years.

Before joining the staff at Black Hills State, Ferré spent 17 years at the University of North Texas. He was the director of the Coliseum (1987-90) and was the associate and assistant director since 1980. He held the post of event coordinator (1978-80).

Ferré is a 1971 graduate of Texas Christian University, earning a bachelor of arts degree. He earned a master’s in journalism from North Texas in 1982.

Ferré also served a three-year term as Chair of the NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball South Central Regional Chairman. Ferré and his wife Sarah, have two daughters, Caitlin and Hope.

Falley Field has been the home of the Ichabod baseball team since the 1990 season and has a listed capacity of 800.

Featuring elevated bench seating with back rests behind the home plate area and a sightline of the entire field. Falley field is one of the finest places in NCAA Division II to watch a game and has seen several renovations in recent years.

In the spring of 2008 the University finished upgrades including new bullpens, hitting cages and a FieldTurf artificial playing surface that covers the entire infield except the pitcher's mound. The press box has space for up to 10 media outlets.

Falley Field saw a new scoreboard put in place prior to the 2014 season.

In 2015, the field was upgraded with new wooden fencing and a brick backstop and net behind home plate was installed in fall 2016 to replace the chain link fence backstop. The dugouts were also renovated and expanded in 2016.

As part of the Washburn baseball facilities, the Ichabods has their locker room renovated in 2010 as part of a $7.2 million project that redefined the landscape for Washburn athletics.

Wood-framed lockers, a meeting room with a video projection screen that drops from the ceiling and 42-inch flat screen TV were added in 2010 as part of the upgrades.

Each locker features a secure locking system for storing valuables and individual player name plates. Additional storage can be found underneath each locker which doubles as a sitting place.

In 2016, the team received a new 55-inch TV and lounge area. It also the decor of the clubhouse with wall murals of past players and a photo gallery dedicated to "Ichabods in the Pros".

Prior to the 2017 season, the exterior of Falley Field was upgraded as new stone pillars and a rod-iron fence were

installed.

FALLEY FIELD

In the fall of 2020, the Ichabods re-turfed the infield and put new sod in the outfield.

The strength and conditioning center as well as the athletic training facilities help Washburn student-athletes be ready for the court and the field...

• The Whiting Field House expansion project was a $7.2 million renovation completed prior to the 2010-11 school year and is one of the largest training facilities in the MIAA.

• There are more than 12,000 square feet of workout space inside the weight room facility.

• There are 21 weight platforms for multiple teams to use at the same time.

• A 39-yard warm up lane made from field turf gives student athletes an area to jog and loosen up and cool down after their workouts.

• The Washburn Athletic Training center was renovated in 2012 and features a Hydroworx aquatic therapy pool along with additional therapy and injury prevention equipment and treatment options.

CONDITIONING AREA

OPENED IN FALL OF 2020

This $20 million state-of-the-art facility was unanimously approved by the Washburn Board of Regents in December 2017 and has since received more than $6 million in donations for its construction. The facility will be located in the southwest end of campus along 21st Street between the baseball and softball fields.

The facility has two distinct areas. One side is a 100-yard turf field for use by Washburn’s football, soccer, baseball and softball teams. The other side... well, that’ll be specifically for the cross country and track & field teams.

Separated by drop down netting, the indoor track & field side rivals most NCAA Division I facilities, let alone Division II. This climate controlled facility allows student-athletes complete freedom to train at optimal levels throughout the year. Other features of the track & field side include a 60-meter runway located in the infield, along with designated lanes for jumps and pole vault all surrounded by a 200-meter banked track - the only one in Division II and one of just 28 in all of the NCAA.

What about seating you ask, well, there will be plenty of it - 1,500 seats to be exact, allowing Washburn the ability to host regional and national championships right in Topeka, Kansas.

The 2023 Washburn University Baseball Media Guide is intended to provide information for writers, broadcasters, sports editors, sports information personnel and fans who follow the Ichabods. Material in the guide was current as of the deadline of January 29, 2023.

ATHLETIC COMMUNICATIONS OFFICE

MEDIA ACCESS/SERVICES

Media Credentials are available to personnel from accredited media outlets by contacting Joy Smith, assistant athletic communications director, Washburn University, Topeka, Kansas, 66621. Credentials are available 90 minutes prior to the game in the press box.

Press box space is reserved on a game-by-game basis and space is limited. Please contact the Athletic Communications Office at least three days in advance to ensure a seat in the press area.

Radio Stations wishing to broadcast from Falley Field should make broadcast requests through the Athletic Communications Office at least one week in advance.

INTERVIEW POLICIES

Postgame Interviews with head coach Harley Douglas are available to media personnel after his brief meeting with the team immediately following the game. Players and coaches will be made available on the field for interviews. Additionally, intreview requests should be made through the Washburn Athletic Communications Office during normal business hours.

MEDIA INFORMATION

Washburn athletic communications office

Gene Cassell is in his 25th season as Washburn’s Assistant Athletic Director for Athletic Communications after starting in December 1998. Cassell is a 1997 graduate from Northwest Missouri State University, where he graduated with a BS in journalism with a minor in broadcasting.

Besides overseeing the media relations of Washburn’s 18 athletic teams, he is a vice chair of CoSIDA and Publications Contest Committee and served five years as a D2SIDA Regional Representative. He is the regional coordinator for the D2CCA all-region volleyball team, a former member of the Don Hansen Football Gazette all-region committee and a 17-year member of the MIAA Basketball Tournament Committee.

The WU SID Office has received 146 citations for excellence for office publications, including 57 best in the nation, 50 second-place finishes and 15 best covers in the nation since arriving at Washburn.

Cassell and his wife, Regina, live in Topeka with their two sons, Jacob and Jared. Regina is the director of student publications and is a professor in the Washburn mass media department.

Joy Smith joined the Washburn Athletic Department in August, 2019 as a full-time assistant after spending the previous 10 months as an intern in the office. She is responsible for the media relations efforts of volleyball, women’s basketball and the baseball team.

Before arriving at Washburn, Smith interned at the University of Central Missouri’s Athletic Department for the 2017-18 school year. She covered cross country, track and field and assisted with eight other varsity teams, including the 2017 Division II Women’s Soccer National Champions and the 2018 Division II Women’s Basketball National Champions.

Smith graduated from Central Missouri with a bachelor’s of science in sport management and a minor in business administration.

The Blue Springs, Mo., native resides in Topeka, Kan.

Kyle Manthe joins the Washburn Athletic department as an athletic communications intern in 2022. Manthe earned his bachelor’s degree in Mass Media from Washburn in 2022. During his time at Washburn, Manthe worked at the Washburn Review for two years and served as the sports editor for 2021-22 and also worked as a sports information student intern in Spring 2022. Manthe is originally from Topeka where he has also worked as a contributor at Top Sports News and board operator at 580 WIBW radio.
