The Beyond Boundaries Program
is for students interested in collaborative problem-solving.
You will build your skills to tackle complex challenges— like climate change, poverty, and ethical artificial intelligence—that are best addressed by bringing together experts from diverse fields. We will support you in pursuing your unique interests and deepening your ability to work with others who bring different knowledge. Together, you will solve real-world problems that are important to you.
In your first year, you will take interdisciplinary courses and a group seminar. Many students explore the connections across
WashU’s undergraduate divisions and graduate schools before declaring a major. Throughout your four years, the program will help you identify opportunities and prepare for careers in interdisciplinary fields.
Your journey with Beyond Boundaries begins with three questions:
1 | What role(s) do I want to play on collaborative problem-solving teams?
2 | What skills and knowledge are necessary for interdisciplinary work?
3 | How can I use my time at WashU to grow these skills?

Why did you choose WashU?
WashU captured me with flexible academic programs that spoke to my myriad interests, all housed within a collaborative environment and beautiful campus. Through the Rodriguez Scholar Program, I knew I would have a community to support me through all of my academic and extracurricular ambitions. After touring campus and getting a sample of the endless resources and opportunities combined with the passion and diversity of the people and ideas, I knew that WashU was the school for me.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE YOUR MAJOR AND MINOR?
I have a wide range of academic interests, which influenced the major and minor I chose. Through my major in Psychological & Brain Sciences, I can explore
the psychology field through the different lenses of social sciences and STEM, giving me a unique perspective on my premedical aspirations. My minor in Music has allowed me to pursue my musical passions, which are just as integral to my educational and future ambitions as my major.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT ST. LOUIS?
St. Louis has an incredible community that expands far past the downtown area, with great culture and venues to explore. My favorite is Forest Park. In addition to its proximity to WashU, it has amazing scenic trails, fantastic performances at The Muny, and great exhibits at the Saint Louis Art Museum.
Why did you choose WashU?
I chose WashU because of all the opportunities the school offered to me as a student interested in both business and design. I’m majoring in marketing and communication design so that I can better understand consumer behavior and changing advertising strategies through an innovative approach. The collaborative environment is another reason that I chose WashU and something that I came to appreciate even more once I got to campus!
WHAT’S BEEN YOUR FAVORITE CLASS SO FAR?
During my first semester, I took a class called Management 100, which is a fundamental course for all incoming BSBA students. The concepts in the class
were engaging and informative, but I also loved having the opportunity to get to know my BSBA cohort better through the case competition that we worked on throughout the semester. The course was a great introduction to Olin, and I’m so glad I had the opportunity to start taking business courses as soon as my very first semester!
WHAT’S THE MOST SURPRISING THING YOU’VE LEARNED IN YOUR FIRST YEAR?
I was intimidated by the uncertainty of college. But even after just a week on campus, I learned that it wasn’t as scary as it had seemed. Yes, there is a lot of change, but there are also so many people who want to see you succeed, especially at WashU.

Why did you choose WashU?
I chose to study chemical engineering because of WashU’s emphasis on environmental applications. I knew I wanted to pursue a career in sustainability, but I didn’t know what that would be exactly.
After taking classes here with professors like Dan Giammar and doing undergraduate research in Dr. Young-Shin Jun’s Environmental NanoChemistry Lab, I learned there’s a lot you can do with a chemical engineering degree in the fields of renewable energy, water treatment, and decarbonization. This degree will help me work on issues that give me a sense of purpose and let me make a difference in the world.
WHAT ACTIVITIES HAVE YOU BEEN INVOLVED WITH AT WASHU?
I’m a student worker at the Women & Engineering Center. The center has a really exciting vision for WashU’s women and engineering community, and it has been rewarding to aid the mission. I’ve held a few other campus jobs as a tutor and a grader, and I am a current member of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) and the Women in Engineering Leadership Society (WELS).
WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE?
I have a renewable energy internship for the summer with a startup called Electric Hydrogen. There, I will be a test engineer, helping them develop their electrolyzers and green hydrogen technology. I intend to pursue a career in industry in the renewable energy space.
Why did you choose WashU?
The Sam Fox School’s Architecture Discovery Program stood out as the most rigorous architecturerelated summer program I experienced throughout senior high. The standard was so high that it spoke volumes about the school’s commitment and culture surrounding architectural education.
WAS THERE A MOMENT AT WASHU THAT CHANGED YOUR PERSPECTIVE ON YOUR FIELD?
During my fall semester of sophomore year, I discovered the inherently humane, collaborative, and empathetic ethos that comes from studio culture. Architecture encourages a deeply collaborative approach, and I am grateful for the physical and ideological conception of the studio. In these spaces, I’ve engaged in some of the most philosophical, thorough, and complex discussions about architecture and its intersections with sociology, science, and various other fields alongside my peers. The studio fosters an environment where such interdisciplinary conversations thrive.

Why did you choose WashU?
Besides its stellar Communication Design program, I knew that the Sam Fox School and WashU would be able to teach me more than just art, both through classes and through the different people I get to interact with. I am also able to pursue a second major in Marketing in a top-ranked business school and take as many Art History classes as I would like.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SPOT ON CAMPUS?
My favorite spot on campus would have to be anywhere on the East End, where both the Sam Fox School and the McKelvey School of Engineering reside. There’s a sense of peace and serenity on this side of campus, with several great study spots, like
the green wall space in Weil Hall or the second floor of McKelvey Hall, as well as spaces to relax and hang out with friends, like Tisch Park and Parkside Café. You get a beautiful view of Brookings and can take a short walk over to Forest Park for even more spots for fun and relaxation.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT ST. LOUIS?
St. Louis has so many different cultural experiences. Some quick examples include Festival of Nations, the Japanese Festival at the Missouri Botanical Garden, the Hispanic Festival in Soulard, and Mardi Gras. It’s a city filled with rich cultural diversity and so much history that is just waiting to be discovered.
Why did you choose WashU?
WashU was the only institution where I felt at home when I spoke with other students. Students and staff were—and still are— open and honest about areas of improvement that need to be made as an institution. They were kind to me in the admission process, and they took a genuine interest— even as just an admitted student—in how I was doing, what my interests were, and how they could get me connected. I also found a real sense of community from the Danforth Scholars Program. In many ways, I feel as though I chose WashU as much as it found/chose me.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THE BEYOND BOUNDARIES PROGRAM?
Beyond Boundaries provides invaluable connections to and experiences with a
diverse community of others who explore unconventional and interdisciplinary paths, like my blend of Computer Science and Studio Art. These experiences have exposed me to countless examples of others’ interdisciplinary careers, equipping me with tools to craft a personalized future that’s truly aligned with my purpose.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SPOT ON CAMPUS?
The Skandalaris Center! Nothing shows true community like Skandy— everything from promoting a brave space for students and staff to share ideas, cultivating competitions for student startups to win funding, bringing in guest speakers, and more! The staff are top notch and have a real vision for WashU and St. Louis.

SPANISH, LATIN AMERICAN STUDIES, AND FILM AND MEDIA STUDIES
COLLEGE OF ARTS & SCIENCES
“Teaching undergraduate students at WashU is the most meaningful part of my job. I work every day to encourage them to have an intellectual life to complement and enrich their career pursuits, to become more knowledgeable about Latin America and the world, and to be both citizens aware of the most important issues of our days and audience members critical of our complex media environments. For the past 17 years, it has been my mission and my greatest honor to work with our brilliant students and to play a part in their careers and their personal growth.”

ARCHITECTURE
SAM FOX SCHOOL OF DESIGN & VISUAL ARTS
“I love working with WashU architecture undergraduates because they’re intellectually curious and fearlessly creative. They learn and experiment through making physical models and drawings and, ultimately, discover new architectural possibilities that surprise me every time we work together. They are preparing to go out into the world and make incredible buildings and public spaces that address the social, political, and ecological issues of our time. WashU undergrads understand architecture as a cultural endeavor and are preparing to transform the world.”

WashU Traditions
With more than 170 years of history, ours is a community rich in traditions.
BLACK ANTHOLOGY
“My favorite WashU tradition is Black Anthology, because the insatiable desire to see a show that no one but the cast and executive board knows the plot of has always intrigued me. And the support is endless in terms of people desiring to see our show! It also has so much history behind it, and to be a BA alum is something I will hold close to my heart long after graduation.”
Raevyn
CARNAVAL
“My favorite part of Carnaval is definitely the people! Everyone involved in the performance worked incredibly hard in order to have a great show, and I formed strong friendships with other performers. I first saw Carnaval as a high school senior during scholars finalist weekend, and I loved watching the diverse array of performances and how the skit focused on serious issues pertaining to the Latinx community.”
Belal
MOONLIGHT BREAKFAST
“Moonlight Breakfast is my favorite WashU tradition because I absolutely love breakfast food and it is always a fun time to meet new friends, especially in your first year.”
Katie
“The food here the night before finals each semester is phenomenal (and free), so go get some really good chicken and waffles or stuffed French toast. Also, pro tip: Get there as early as you can to get all the good stuff!”
Maxwell
“WILD is one of the most exciting nights of the year. Some loud music and high energy makes for such a great time with friends. And WILD comes right before finals for architecture students, giving us a night to have fun before the big day.”
Kaden
WILD
“WILD (Walk In Lay Down) is such an incredible and unexpected experience. Imagine a tightly packed concert with all of your friends, a great artist, free entrance, and you don’t have to travel more than a 10-minute walk.”

THURTENE CARNIVAL
“I love the Thurtene Carnival, as it brings together WashU and the surrounding St. Louis community. It is a great time to enjoy food and fun during the spring right on campus.”
Elijah
DIWALI SHOW
“The annual Diwali show is put on by Ashoka, WashU’s South Asian Society, to celebrate the festival of lights. Going to see my roommates, friends, and classmates perform with their dance teams and a cappella groups is one of the highlights of my semester. I’m always impressed by the production value of the show, something they have prepared for the whole semester, as well as the incredible energy in the audience.”
