For all those with iPhones, Androids and Blackberrys (if you haven’t got one of these it’s time to worry!)
APP ZONE
Google goggles Free Platform: Android
Recorder Pro £0.69 Platform: iOS
Dropbox Free Platform: All
Google revolutionises the way we search the web using Visual Shape Technology; don’t bother with words or even sounds, now it’s time for pictures! Capture a business card and convert it directly into a contact; scan a barcode and find a product online; geo-tag your location using monuments (helpful if you wake up in a foreign country); click away at foreign languages (like on a menu) and translate it. And better still; solve entire Sudoku puzzles – no kidding (for some, it means never being beaten by your Gran again!) Unfortunately, this app cannot help with people yet, so if you’re trying to add that pretty girl on facebook, maybe try asking her… As yet, Google Goggles is only available for Android users, but for everyone else watch this space.
Record effortlessly in adjustable quality. Basically turn your iPhone (or iPad/ iPod) into a Dictaphone. This App offers a one-touch interface giving you time to rest whilst your iPhone does all the work. (However, it must be noted that the app cannot make you look attentive!) It is affordable on even the stingiest, shoe-string budget. So if you need to catch up with a lecture or a meeting (because of what was swirling in your drink the previous night) or maybe because you want to re-live a particular moment, this is the perfect app! Equivalent for Android users: Hi-Q MP3 Recorder Blackberry users will, unfortunately, have to stay attentive and take a pen and paper to lectures due to no equivalent applications - apart from the record function.
Imagine a box that follows you around and is full of your data and information. Dropbox seamlessly syncs your life and drops it into one place, so you can access up-to-date information from any of your devices with ease – including your computer. Dropbox is particularly useful for those enslaved by exam boards and universities to complete prolonged assignments on truly stimulating and thought-provoking topics. Put your data in one place and forget the days of flash drives, or archaic floppy disks (the latter was a joke, by the way, though many will relish the days that 1.5 megabytes used to be a lot of space, and the healthy crunching sound that your drive made when churning information). Back to the task, this app is simple, easy to use and does what it says – Dropbox.
Acer Aspire D257 Netbook Lowest price: £199
This netbook is suitable for all who need a simple and effective machine that can easily be carried to the library, work or lectures. For under £200 you get a generous 250GB hard drive to store away all those legal music and video downloads, a smooth Intel Atom N455 processor and 1GB of ram adequate for basic entertainment and all your assignments (perhaps not 3D gaming and the hacking of Sony’s secure servers). Acer have also added a sweet touch with dual boot-up options, giving you access to the vast reservoir of apps on the android market – perhaps making up for the very limited Windows 7 Starter OS. Weighing at just over one kilogram there’s no need to get a gym membership to carry this one about! However, for those who don’t have midget fingers, the (not so) full-sized keyboard could be difficult to master. Moreover, its 4 hours of battery life is a bit on the measly side as other netbooks offer up to 8! Nevertheless, this netbook is still nippy and does what it says – and does it well.
Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W570 Lowest price: £129.95
Slightly pricey, but take heed when I tell you this camera captures with real class, retaining the magic of your memory: 16.1 million pixels (quite a few eh?) coupled with highly receptive sensors and you’ll mesmerise your friends – whispering waves crawling up a lush beach; rich blues of the restless sea reaching out with an invitation… (okay, so I got a bit carried away!) The camera offers a slim, well-trimmed finish available in black, silver, lilac and many other colours. It will fit smugly into your palm and your pocket. With 5x optical zoom and Sony’s wide-angle lens, there won’t be any pixelated shots when you’re zooming into the far distance. The panoramic function adds a whole new dimension to this camera; it lets you extend the range of the lens to cover 360˚, by holding down the capture button and moving in a circle. The large 6.7 cm LCD brings your shots to life and the HD recording (with sound) ties it all up in a bow!

Opportunities WUWO was lucky enough this week to meet Jo Taylor and Colin Campbell-Austin two key figures who head up Channel 4’s 4 Talent
She then went on to encourage us all to perfect the art of schmoozing! “It’s also about taking opportunities and networking wherever possible.” – So remember those parties aren’t just for having a good time, you never know who you might meet! There was also a big up for WUWO (which was nice!) when we discussed the openings for young people trying to get into the creative industries.
We all know Channel 4 gives us some of the best show on television i.e. Inbetweeners, Skins, and Misfits but are you aware of the amount of effort they go to ensuring young people can access a wealth of opportunity? Well if you are - you knew more than me! Amongst other things, I wanted to find out about Channel 4’s employment ethos and how they set about implementing those practices that they extol in their 4 talent scheme. It soon became apparent to WUWO that even when seeking employment with a company that has the wealth and reputation of Channel 4 it is not a prerequisite to have been educated to degree level
“The problem now is that you’re conditioned in school. If you want to be a doctor or a lawyer or an accountant there are more traditional routes for you. But if you want to be a writer or a producer or an advertising exec you are not catered for. So therefore it’s about projects such as WUWO magazine and Channel 4 talent to allow young people to have a bit of a play. 4 Talent’s aim and aspiration is to nurture and develop the next generation of creative talent both online through our website, on screen or through our production trainee scheme”
People should understand that it’s not only the skills and experiences they need, but also the attitude Colin: “I didn’t go to Uni. I took a year out and worked for an airline. It was initially only supposed to be a 6 month contract but I ended up staying for 10 years and ended up as cabin crew manager. Last year I started to think about what else I wanted to do and maybe this wasn’t the industry for me anymore. I happened to meet Jo at an event we talked about how I like the people side of things as well as the development side - nurturing talent - and those are the skills that I transferred here.”
Colin: “we also have our youth advisory panel where young people help us know how to word and where to place advertisements. They are advisors on the programmes we run to help young people get into the industry” Colin finished with a positive message to young people who don’t feel they’ve had the right start in life “we don’t care what school you go to or what your background is, all we care about you and your talent”
Jo then confirmed to me that Channel 4 values having a staff force from different walks of life and that application and will are perhaps more important than orthodox qualifications:
Pretty encouraging words! Check out 4 Talent and see if they can help you achieve your ambitions… If you’re looking for a career in the creative industries, we’re sure they can!
Jo: “Young people should understand that it’s not only the skills and experiences they need, but also the attitude.”

Little Big Year
Rise of the Skateboaring, taco-eating Weeman Well known for his role as Weeman in Jackass, Jason “Wee Man” Acuña was in Shoreditch recently and was nice enough to invite WUWO along to meet him Sarah Wright During his time on Jackass, Jason Acuña had to do many crazy things: skating as an Oompa-Loompa, rolling Johnny Knoxville down a staircase in a red carpet whilst dressed as a king, kicking himself in the head (an achievement made possible by his miniscule 4’7” stature) and dressing as a leprechaun and a reindeer being among the highlights. Early last year he set up a taco restaurant in LA and he’s now known as a successful restaurant-owner and TV stuntman. Jason has many other secret talents, for example “flip cup”. (Check out wuwomagazine.com to find out more by watching the video.) Due to his proportions, Wee Man often gets away with his cheeky behaviour. At school he was known as the class clown; the one who did hardly any work and pulled lots of pranks. He had two main goals in life: have fun and become a decent skateboarder
How long have you been in London for?
What would you say is the craziest thing that has happened in your career so far?
A day. I’ve been doing lots of interviews, a little bit of skating and I got my hair cut this morning.
That I’m a restaurant owner. Like to me every day I wake up going ‘really?’ so it’s pretty crazy. I never thought I’d be where I am now.
How is your skating going?
Good, but I had an injury in January. I slipped off a ledge and broke my back, my vertebrae L5 slipped down and broke my tailbone.
So you’ve had a lot of outfits to wear during your time on Jackass. What is your favourite?
Ouch, are you OK now then?
My favourite was probably the Oompa-Loompa, because I had to do some naughty tricks.
Have you been skating a lot in LA?
What’s the worst thing, and most horrible thing, you’ve had to do on Jackass?
Yeah, better than ever.
Jumping off a bridge on a bungee rope super glued to Preston in the 69 position.
That’s where I’ve been skating the most.
What songs are on your iPod this year?
Black Sabbath, any Black Sabbath, Nilos, -an up-andcoming band and any ACDC.
What was it like? How long were you there for?
How’s your taco restaurant going? Good. We’ve been open a year and a half now. It gets really busy in the summer when all the tourists come.
Was he okay?
I was there for two minutes and it was horrible. I just ripped myself off Preston. No, he was screaming like a little girl the whole time.
Do you think you will bring Tacos over to London?
Are you still in contact with the whole Jackass gang?
We’re short of Taco restaurants! Yeah hopefully one day I will bring the secret sauce over here.
Yeah. I was speaking with Preston just now. We are all just doing our own thing.
Can you tell us about the secret sauce. Why is it so special?
Do you think you guys are going to carry on with crazy stunts?
It is made with a lot of love and good times. I can’t say the ingredients as they are too secret and I wouldn’t want someone over here to sneak the idea!
Of course!
You were in Jackass pretty much from the start. How did you get into it?
I was working in skateboard videos for a magazine called Big Brother and we just realised jackass stuff was selling good so we tried it out and it just worked.

THINGS YOU DIDN’T
KNOW ABOUT
WEEMAN: He has never had a Gaymers cider but would like to try it You can catch him cooking Taco’s at his restaurant on “Weeman Wednesdays” if you are ever in California. If he was stranded on a desert island his ideal 3 items would be a skateboard, water and a taco. A film he could watch over and over again is One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest. And he thinks Jack Nicholson is sexy....

Out of the
Shadows
– Meet Miles Kane
He’s putting the soul into rock and roll! WUWO spent some time with the stylish Mr Miles Kane... Former frontman of the Rascals Miles Kane, may be known by many for being one half of The Last of the Shadow Puppets with Alex Turner (Arctic Monkeys) but with a solo career on the up and a sell out tour, now it’s Kane’s time to shine...
What made you decide to go solo rather than stay with your previous band The Rascals or form a new band?
There wasn’t really a master plan. It’s just the way things happen. Over the past few years I’ve been in bands and The Rascals had some great times and great songs that I still live by and think are great. I’d never knock it but it just didn’t work out. We had this dark record and it just didn’t hit off and there was problems with the label and it was like, what are you gonna do? Start a new band or have a go on your own? So I thought I’d have a go down this road and see what it tastes like.
Did you feel a lot of pressure in making your own album because of the big success The Last of shadow puppets received?
Massive - and you know being honest about it, a lot of people out there just saw me as the new kid on the block and thought you’re Al’s (Alex Turner’s) best mate, so for any of those people that did think that, you want to make a record to prove yourself. And it took time to get the record right. It killed me at one point because I didn’t gig for nearly 2 years, or even do an interview and I buzz off that. But looking back now, taking those extra few months to work on the record, I’m so glad I did. It made it what it is, and it made it a strong album.
Your song ‘Inhaler’ is featured on a gaming ad at the moment for racing cars. It’s a very cool song but is it true that the ‘Inhaler’ is actually about your asthma inhaler? Ha ha! Well yeah sort of. I just needed lyrics for the chorus of the song and as laugh I just said ‘Inhaler’, but it seemed to work and it stuck.
You managed to get a scantily clad Daisy Lowe writhing about as an erotic dancer in your video for ‘Come closer’. How did that happen?
We were going for a mean street style video with a few girls in it. The director kept sending me all these models to look at, which is not a bad job you know, but just felt strange being like ‘yes, no’. I thought ‘I can’t do this’ you know, it feels so cold. Then a guy from the label knew Daisy and I’d met her once before and he sent her the tune and she just came down and she did a good job.
The director kept sending me all these models to look at, which is not a bad job you know

A BIT MORE ABOUT MILES
He dated supermodel Agnes Deyn His favourite take away is Indian His cousin is frontman of The Coral, James Skelly
Would you say that is one of your favourite’s off the album? Yeah it’s a favourite song of mine. I remember writing that in an afternoon and it was the easiest song to write on this record. Originally in my mind, I wanted it to have a glam rock feel, with heavy drums but I did a demo of it and it sounded too much like Gary Glitter. So we put a dead simple beat on it and it just made it what it is. I love the words and the catchiness of it and the production.
So was there a defining moment that made you want to become a musician, or was it always there?
There was a defining moment. A precise defining moment! A DVD called ‘Gimme some truth’ the making of the imagine album by John Lennon and there’s all this footage of him in his house, making this record with Phil Spector. If you like Lennon or the Beatles definitely watch it. There’s this part where he sings ‘gimme some truth’ and he sounds quite venomous with spat out lyrics. You see him doing it live in the vocal room and it blew my mind. I just thought ‘yeah, I wanna sing like that.’
Are you in London much? Do you have a favourite place to hang out or a secret gem you can recommend?
I have just moved to London actually. I’ve been here more than I’ve been home (The Wirral) and every time I’ve had a day off, I seem to be in London doing bits and bobs, so it makes sense and I’ve got a lot of friends here. I probably sound like a right twat but I’m a member of The Groucho and if I’m going for a bevvy I like to drink there.
A man with good taste! You are also known for being a very stylish man. Do you like to shop?
Yeah I love shopping. I love clothes and fashion. I’ve got a friend who’s as great designer and he’s made us a few bits. I love going round Liberty or Selfridges - you know, get myself a shirt and that. I love Paul Smith and Agnes B as well.
Catch Miles Kane when his tour hits London on the 25th and 26th October at Electric Ballroom in Camden. His album ‘Colour of the trap’ is out now. 09

MUSIC
With album number 3 under their belt and having just completed their UK tour, we caught up with multi-platinum selling band The Feeling, to talk inspiration, life and music...
You’re latest album is called ‘Together We Were Made’. What made you come up with that name?
with each other’s friends and families and had wanted to work together, but you can’t force these things, so just let it happen naturally. When the song came about it just seemed right for Sophie.
It’s the final line from the final song on our album. The previous album was ‘Join with us’ which was the title of one of our songs - so it seemed to fit our philosophy as a band, as well as the bigger picture of the human race and everything. Everyone can take it to mean whatever it does to them. We found that most people would have their own take on it, which is good. It’s thoughtprovoking. It’s all about the love as far as we’re concerned.
Is there anyone else that you would like to work with on a future album?
That’s a very good question. There are loads of weird and wonderful things happening at the moment, and there are a lot of interesting artists out there. It’s a really difficult to answer but we’d like to work with anyone good, regardless of their style and age. They should be preferably alive though!
How would you describe your latest album?
We don’t like to force our songs into any particular style, so with all the songs on the album we let the music run in its own direction. It makes our tracks more stylistically diverse; we have dancey songs as well as pop, acoustic, natural organic and then some more electro weird type stuff.
What was the best gig you’ve ever done?
It’s a tie between 2 gigs which were a bit special; either Glastonbury, at the main stage or at the Princess Diana memorial, at Wembley stadium. Both of those gigs were mind-blowingly exciting and incredibly nerve-wracking but we really enjoyed them. Definitely moments to be remembered.
You worked with Sophie Ellis-Bextor on the track ‘Leave Me Out of it’. How did this come about?
Well, Sophie’s married to our bass player Richard, and we all spend a lot of time together. We hang out a lot
“ Together We Were Made ” is out now.

Say hello to DJ Dan. Not only is he one of the biggest DJs in the country, he is also the man that created ‘Propaganda’ - now the biggest club night in the country (not to mention nights in Ireland and Australia!). With 21 weekly events, Propaganda has turned the clubbing world on its head by introducing indie clubbing to the mainstream. An incredible 25,000 people per week attend one of Propaganda’s events, so what’s the secret DJ Dan? WUWO cought up with DJ Dan to find out how he spreads his ‘propaganda’
What are the big crowd pleasers at the moment?
Hello DJ Dan, how are you?
Florence and the Machine are due to release there second album this autumn, hopefully it will be as good as the first one.
The Vaccines have been one of the biggest bands of the year so far and we get a lot of requests for them and Mumford and Sons are always a good one to sing along to.
Are there any new albums we should be keeping an eye out for?
I’m very well thank you.
Would it be fair to say that Propaganda has shaken up clubbing in the UK?
Finally, tell us something about Propaganda that no one else knows...
It’s quite a big claim isn’t it? I started Propaganda when I was a student and couldn’t find any of the kind of club nights that I wanted to go to and it soon became apparent that I wasn’t the only person in Bristol that would rather dance to the Strokes than drum ‘n’ bass. The success of Propaganda in Bristol made me decide to try and take it to other cities and gradually it grew to what it is today. It’s still amazes me that it’s become so big and it’s a comfort to know that there are so many people out there who appreciate and support the indie scene. If you had told me eight years ago that an indie club would regularly be selling out 2000 capacity venues I probably wouldn’t have believed you, so in that sense we probably have shaken the clubbing scene in this country.
I can tell you that we will be hosting a massive Halloween party on Sat 29th October at the newly reopened Brixton Electric. You can consider this your advance warning to start thinking about your costume!
Thank you DJ Dan. We look forward to catching you behind the decks at Propaganda soon! You can check out Propaganda every Friday at the O2 Academy Islington as well as at venues across the UK, Ireland and Australia. For more information go to www.thepropaganda.com and check out facebook. Saturday 29th October Propaganda’s Halloween event features Faith SFX - Plan B’s Beatboxer.
If you had to give me one reason for the popularity of Propaganda what would it be?
WUWO’S BANDS TO KEEP YOUR EYES ON
I’m sure it must be down to more than one thing but the thing that people say most often is that you get a fun and friendly atmosphere at Propaganda and I think that is because of the type of music we play. We don’t tend to get the kind of people that are just looking for a club to go and get drunk in, the people who come to Propaganda come because they appreciate the music and they know they will be amongst like minded people. You know the crowd is coming from the same place when you play big tune and 2000 people join in with the chorus.

BEAUTY
Ever thought beauty could take you around the world?
The London College of Beauty Therapy is your ticket for a world of adventure. For many, the term ‘Beauty Therapist’ may conjure up images of Amy Childs going on about ‘vajazzle’; however beauty therapy is not just about fake tans and nails. It can open up doors to a whole new world full of opportunities that you would never imagine. Fancy working at a luxury spa in Abu Dhabi or travelling the world on a cruise ship? Maybe you’d like to work for Chanel? How about becoming a
lecturer or beauty journalist? Well, these are all things students from the London College of Beauty Therapy have gone on to do. Having recently won LCBT’s award for Student of the Year Neuza Ceita, 19, from Hackney is already set for a great future. She is someone that has her own ideas about where beauty will take her ‘I am planning to go to University to study an Access course in Biomedical Sciences or Medicine. I would really like to specialise in Physiotherapy now I have realised how much I’ve enjoyed learning about the body.’ LCBT believes in creating careers, not courses. This is something they firmly uphold, as 93% of their

For those that don’t know about it yet, the airbrush is like a mini spray
gun that makes the particles of airbrush make-up. These are much smaller than the particles your average foundation. This means you can spray it on fine layers, giving great coverage without clogging pores or caking, as it sits on top of your skin, rather than being rubbed in. If you use a silicone based foundation like Airbase, it will also set instantly, the colour will not rub off on clothes,

There is also additional support for their students with services like their ‘Jobshop’ which has over 500 opportunities, jobs and apprenticeships on offer. They also hold interviews at the college with prestigious companies such as Steiner and Benefit. For those who prefer the other side of Beauty Therapy (oh yes....the being pampered side) you can book an appointment at their centrally located, student run salon on Great Marlborough street (just off Oxford Circus) which offers a range of treatments at ridiculously low prices. A great way of relaxing those pins after a hectic day of shopping!
it is water-resistant, and it will last until you take it off. I mean it when I say, it really does last! So whether you are at a wedding or partying the night away, this is the stuff to make you magazine style flawless all night. Now I have to warn you getting an airbrush kit can be pricey, but there are plenty of personal use kits available for under £200. These also include your make-up. My advice to make-up lovers is get saving and if you do buy a kit, charge your mates to use it. Believe me they will all want a go on your new toy!

SEX
Pepped up and praised by your friends, you walk over to make conversation but within five minutes she’s giving frantic eye signals to her friends, begging them to rescue her from the horror of your presence. Here’s the timely run-down of how you could lose what you never had in superquick time
5 MINUTES
It’s an age old problem. You walk into a room and your eyes settle on a vision of beauty that instantly gets you sweating.
She sees that you’re wearing a vest. There’s something grotesque about a man’s underarms being exposed. If you’ve teamed your vest with sunglasses for added emphasis then you might want to get rid of those too. You’re inside, at night… You look like a dick.
4 MINUTES On closer inspection, she realises that you have Hair That Shouldn’t Be There. You need to do some serious manscaping. Anything resembling a monobrow or fur tufting out from your ridiculous vest? You need to Wax. That. Off.
3 MINUTES Your vainglorious self inspection in the mirror is only broken by lascivious glances down her top. Girls don’t like this. Fact.

Vampires: all they need is plenty of sunblock and pints of blood. Sounds like a holiday on the Costa Del Sol. Amy J Cotter Vampires have been sucking blood on our TV and cinema screens for decades. From their earliest incarnations as bald, pointy-nosed counts wrapped in cloaks in films like Nosferatu and Tod Browning’s classic Dracula, they’ve constantly been resurrected for fresh audiences. Even in the ‘90s vampires held true to this form, with Francis Ford Coppola’s Bram Stoker’s Dracula being a classic example; although arguably the scariest thing about that film was Keanu Reeves’ shocking attempt at an English accent. And yet that was also the decade that brought Buffy the Vampire Slayer to our screens, and then vampires ditched their musty capes, became several decades younger and, most importantly, they got sexy! This ugly-duckling transformation has been the lifeblood of the new wave of programmes and films
some immortal beings and so commences a clichéd love triangle. But it doesn’t take a telepath to discover why these TV vamps have got females everywhere pleading for the underworld. It’s the dangerous lifestyle and moral ambiguity of the vampires, and their general hunk-a-saurus vibe! All girls are susceptible to a bit of the old bad-boy charm, and what’s more exciting than a perfectly sculpted hotty who can beat the living crap out of anyone who threatens you, but who might at any moment sink his teeth into your neck? So what’s in the pipeline? True blood was launched on HBO in 2008 and has drawn in 5.1 million viewers to become the most-watched programme on the network since the finale of The Sopranos. For all you truly blood-thirsty fans who would drop dead if this show ever left the airwaves, never fear, as tall blond Viking vamp Alexander Skarsgard has committed to six years with the show; fang-tastic news! For those who have been struggling without their weekly bite of Vampire Diaries, the third series is back mid-September and promises raunchy revelations and shocking twists as two vampires unexpectedly rise from the dead (again). And then there’s the penultimate instalment of the **Twilight films, Breaking Dawn: Part 1, which hits cinemas on 18th of November this year**. So all you Twi-hards out there, prepare for more of the indecisive antics of Bella Swan and her guard-dog Edward Cullen. As immortal as the vampires themselves, this craze shows no signs of abating, so clear out your basements and de-garlic your kitchens - these folkloric fitties will continue to hang from the rafters for a long while to come.
TV vamps have got females everywhere pleading for the underworld that now proliferate. Helped no end by Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight Saga that has ensured droves of young people have rushed to watch Robert Pattison looking moodily at an invariably topless Taylor Lautner, while Kristen Stewart stands beautifully but helplessly between them. Although Twilight is aimed most definitely at a younger demographic, there are surely many who are afraid to come out of the coffin and admit to this guilty pleasure. We have all, however, given into our curiosity and checked out the more adult versions of vampirism, such as The Vampire Diaries and True Blood. We tell ourselves that it’s acceptable to watch because of the rampant nudity and post-watershed status, but the content is more-or-less the same: a somewhat square girl-next-door is pursued by two devastatingly hand-

Rough Riderz
When asked to describe Four-Cross, Phil Hall’s response was, “Combine mountain biking with rally driving and you get four-cross - it’s mental, dangerous, fun and fast!”
Siseley Coates-Harman After a motorbike accident left Phil Hall in a wheelchair, unfazed, he kept searching for his next adrenaline fix. Eventually he found the exciting world of Four Wheel Downhill Riding – 4x. Phil was put in contact with Dave Bower, another adrenaline junkie, and together they set up Rough Riderz. Phil’s convinced that four wheels are just as exciting as two, and they’re getting loads of support from within the mountain bike community – on a recent trip to Fort William and Ben Nevis, many able-bodied bikers were shocked to see 4x bikes on the World Cup track, hurtling down the black runs while strapped in. Phil argues that as long as there is the gradient, 4x bikes can go just as fast as a mountain bike: he recently followed Dave on his bike to gauge a speed from his van and Phil lost him on the bends doing 40mph! On a normal downhill mountain bike track the guys reach speeds of up to 30mph, easily on par with able-bodied mountain bikers. The responses when handling a 4x bike are the same as on a mountain bike, but the four wheels give a feel of rally-style driving. There are a few slight differences though, like the lack of pedals, which means that courses must have a consistent downwards gradient, though in many cases the Forestry Commission have simply made tiny alterations to their existing courses in order to create a completely downhill track. 4x bikes are also heavier at the front and therefore you can’t ‘pop’ like on a mountain bike, needing to rely on gravity to build up momentum to get the speed for jumps. Also, riders are harnessed in by three straps, meaning you need to be committed to every jump - you can’t bail out as easily as
on a mountain bike! Phil describes his first 4x crash as a result of “Too much enthusiasm, too little skill” - on his last run of the day, Phil didn’t see the second jump in a sequence and his back tyre clipped the top of it. The result: a broken collarbone. Rough Riderz is currently based in Whinlatter in the Lake District and for Phil it “offers the opportunity for those of us in wheelchairs to venture to inaccessible areas, being able to launch down a mountain with views across the Lake District is such a novelty”. He describes the terrain as perfect for beginners as there is a good enough gradient for a rolling speed to get the technique. Phil’s dream would be to race down the mountain ranges of Whistler, where the bikes are all tested to the limit and ski lifts enable easy access to the peak. Indeed, 4x is growing in popularity in the US and many youngsters who started out BMXing are now graduating to 4x rather than mountain biking for their adrenaline fix. Phil is passionate about expanding the sport in the UK to start doing competitions, and he’s hoping to sponsor a team to represent the UK in the Kokanee Crankworx – a weeklong celebration of mountain biking held in Whistler each year. Of course, the difficulty of getting over various obstacles at high-speed while being jostled by three other competitors results in plenty of excitement, but as Phil challenges, “He who breaks last, wins... or crashes!”.
SOME FACTS ABOUT DOWNHILL RACING – The first timed downhill mounting bike race took place in 1976 in California. – Many Ski areas are converted into biking venues in the summer – The 2011 Downhill World Champion is Danny Hart from the United Kingdom.
3 UNUSUAL SPORTS OF THE MONTH – Gurning competition originating from the Uk in 1297 - the art of making your face look like it’s inside out seems a very weird concept. – Wellie wanging is a sport that also originated in the UK . Competitors are required to hurl a Wellington boot as far as possible from a standing or running start. If you’re trying this one make sure your in a open area - not Oxford Circus! – The Mud Pit Belly Flop is a game from the Redneck Games in Dublin, GA. A man made mud pit is assembled and contestants literally flop belly first inside side the pit. The bigger the belly the better the splash.
