Annual Report 2013
Intro
A letter from Co-Founder & Executive Director, Brian McTear SEPTEMBER, 2013
It is again my sincere pleasure to report to you, the Weathervane Community and all of our supporters, big and small. We’ve learned so much in the past twelve months, there’s simply not enough space here to express it. But if I had to wrap it all up into one statement, it’d be this: The work that we’ve accomplished together, and the programming and activities that have come of it, have truly expanded my definition of “music community”. In this community, there are thousands of us at home, in countries around the world learning the craft of music together. Some of us want to expand our knowledge simply for our love of music. Others take our music in vans city to city to perform for audiences of all sizes. And while some of us make our livings with our music, for others the love and care we put into our instruments is reward enough. Weathervane’s work has revealed how diverse a group the independent music community truly is, and in 2013, our programming has continued to suggest the even greater potential of this rich and supportive group. In this report I hope you can feel the positive energy, dedication and enthusiasm that go into Weathervane and Shaking Through. But of course it’s you, the Weathervane Member, Donor and Sponsor that we have to thank the most. As I say often: We do this “with you” as much as we do it “for you.” So before we launch into 2014, let’s all take one last moment to reflect on what a great year this was for the Weathervane Music Community! Because of you, music is becoming a deeper, more interactive, shared experience for anyone who wants to take part in it. Thank you for everything you do. Love,
Brian McTear Executive Director and Co-Founder Weathervane Music
2013 Shaking Through artist Steven A. Clark.
“
With Shaking Through, any listener can feel part of the process. It’s not just glorifying the musician and those involved--Weathervane encourages a genuine sense of community, which is so unique and something that I very much admire. WHITNEY MUSE. MUSE EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION

Annual Report 2013
Shaking Through, our flagship music and video series about the birth of a song, lives and breathes because of collaboration. Reaching across genres and across the world, it engages the independent music community through the power of a single song. “How was that?” Steven A. Clark finishes a take and pulls back from the microphone, illuminated under film lights, and surrounded by cameras in the darkened studio at Miner Street Recordings. We’re recording “Bounty,” the premiere episode of Shaking Through 2013, and it’s Steven’s first time working with professionals in a high-end recording studio. He looks into the control room. “That was great!” comes the reply. “but is that harmony too high for you?” “No. I can get it. Let me try it again.” A few takes later, he nails the performance, and the core of this exceptional song is complete. A Community Effort Every year Shaking Through produces 10 episodes featuring a wide variety of indie artists from around the country, like Steven, a North Carolina born R&B singer. They are truly team efforts, drawing on artists both local and from around the world. They feature guest musicianship from key members of the Philadelphia music community, and the generous support of musical instrument makers, recording equipment manufactures and local Fishtown sponsors for
food and hospitality. The making of Steven’s episode began with two people: Executive Producer Felix Espinosa, whose $2,750 donation paid the majority of expenses from the episode, and Curator Chris Swanson, owner of the respected Dead Oceans / Jagjaguwar / Secretly Canadian labels, who initially pointed us towards Steven. Once we heard the demo for “Bounty” we knew we had something special, and so on September 20, 2012, Weathervane welcomed him to Miner Street to record a song for Shaking Through. For Steven, the experience was entirely new. He typically records alone in his bedroom, he told us. “It’s always a personal thing, so I always just do it myself.” But for Shaking Through he wanted to try something new - something live and collaborative. And so we made some calls, mustering an impressive live band from the local Weathervane community, including members of the popular bands Man Man, The War on Drugs, and Shaking Through alums Ava Luna from New York. We also reached out to gear manufacturers Moog and Z-Vex who sent us some of the most impressive synthesizers and effects pedals being made today. The result was astounding.

Featuring Steven, guest musicians Christopher Powell of Man Man, Robbie Bennett and Dave Hartley from the War on Drugs, Felicia Douglass and Becca Kaufman of Ava Luna. Executive Producer Felix Espinosa and Curator Chris Swanson. Engineer Jonathan Low. Producer and series creator Brian McTear.
As Executive Producer, Felix flew in from Panama to experience the video shoot and the recording session. “Being a part of this process was incredible. I learned so much and got to see such amazing things happen in the studio. I’m happy to have been a part of making this happen.” Chris Swanson flew in from Bloomington, Indiana. As one of the most important people behind indie music, his presence illustrated another valuable layer to the community that supports Shaking Through. “I wanted to choose someone who would really learn and grow from the experience,” he told us. “If you look at the artists who have done a Shaking Through episode, it’s had a huge impact.” “I was nervous,” Steven admits. “You’re always afraid other people aren’t going to get [your ideas]. But I didn’t have to explain anything--everything was so seamless. It gives me hope that there are other people out there that I can go to and collaborate with.” Steven’s episode was released on January 26 to Weathervane’s 15,519 newsletter subscribers at the time, along with the thousands of readers of Spin Magazine who premiered the episode. Within a few months he would find himself with a record release, and taking offers to open shows for Alicia Keys, Kendrick Lamar, and Solange Knowles just to name a few. “‘Bounty’
was a high point for Steven,” his manager Louis Joachim later told us. “I know he’s still carrying a lot of that episode with him today.” Beyond the recording session But this isn’t just about Steven’s career. Shaking Through is as much for the audience as the artist. It explores all the facets of how a song gets made, and the people who make it, so that viewers might become better music supporters. This happens in many ways. Through our world-wide remixing project (see below), raw tracks, mix-stems, drum samples and recording notes from the Steven’s episode were sent to the inboxes of the entire Weathervane community - over 15,000 people in 99 countries. Recording forums lit up with discussion about how the song was recorded, as home recording enthusiasts all over the world tried their hand at
mixing the song themselves. Hundreds of people spent hours upon hours, immersed in the fine details of this incredible recording - and deeply engaged with Steven’s work. It’s a powerful way to build support for new music. Your contribution to Shaking Through Of course, this all might never have happened. Without the support of generous people like you, a song like “Bounty” may have never have been recorded. An artist like Steven may have never reached his full potential, and thousands of aspiring musicians and home recording enthusiasts around the world would have never have engaged in such a powerful, truly collaborative learning experience. Your support is the epicenter for a “Bounty” of opportunities and experiences for both Weathervane artists and audiences around the world.
Of course, this episode might never have happened without the support of generous people like you.Your support is the epicenter for a “Bounty” of opportunities and experiences for Weathervane artists and audiences around the world.
Worldwide Remixing Weathervane engages audiences to be better music supporters by establishing new ways for them to feel invested in the music they love. The goal of Shaking Through has always been to educate and inspire music appreciators to be better music supporters, and we’ve always sought to do this by creating new ways for them to feel invested in the music they love. Since 2011, Weathervane has shared all recorded materials from Shaking Through sessions through our newsletters, and more recently our preMIX and FREE Membership programs. Users download everything from the raw audio tracks, to finished mix stems, drum samples and recording notes. By opening the files in Garageband, ProTools, Logic, or whatever home recording software they have, they can choose to learn about music on a more technical level. Many make and even share their own remixes. The results, as shown here, have been astounding.

Weathervane featured in Music industry textbook In 2013, Advisory member Catherine Fitterman Radbill published a college text book on the music industry and it featured the story of Weathervane Music and Shaking Through on the very first page of the book. The book, “Introduction to the Music Industry – An Entrepreneurial Approach”, (Routledge Press; 2013) will be used for New York University Steinhardt School’s Undergraduate Music Business Program. “Truly, the entire Weathervane family has inspired me and influenced the direction of this project,” says Radbill.
2012 Year-end Fundraising Success In October and November, 2012 Weathervane hosted its 4th annual Year-end Fundraising Campaign, promoting the launch of our brand new Membership Program among other great features. We had our most successful day of the campaign when 15 luminary artists from the indie music world, including The National and Dr. Dog - and not to mentioned our proudest Shaking Through Alum, Sharon Van Etten - all contributed limited signed vinyl records as an incentive for their fans to join Weathervane’s community. The 45 day campaign was a stunning success, raising $21,919 from 360 donors.
Signed LPs donated by The National, Man Man, Dr Dog, Sharon Van Etten, The War on Drugs, & Kurt Vile.
Twin Sister, Kendrick Lamar and Dr Dre This year, Weathervane received one of the greatest types of honors modern music has to offer, when a song from Shaking Through was heavily sampled and remixed for a major hip hop release. Hip hop producer, Scoop Deville heard Twin Sister’s “Meet the Frownies” (2010, Shaking Through Vol. 1 Ep 7) and found it a perfect thematic addition for “The Recipe” a hit single from star rapper Kendrick Lamar. The song also featured hip hop legend Dr. Dre - that alone is an enormous honor! These are great opportunities for Weathervane, not to mention a major boon for Twin Sister’s career. And while it goes to show that the benefits of participating in Shaking Through can continue for many years after an episodes initial release, the fact is that none of this would have happened without the Weathervane Community’s support of this incredible documentary series.
Above: Brian McTear leads a recording workshop. Recorders club member Mariel Beaumont.
Recording Workshops Weathervane first offered recording workshops in our 2011 Kickstarter Campaign. Flash forward to 2013 and the workshops program has expanded to numerous Basic Techniques and Hands-on Recording and Mixing Sessions throughout the year. Our favorite part is the small, but enthusiastic group of “regulars” that participate each time. We call them “The Recorders Club”. Mariel Beaumont works in the fashion world by day, and is a local musician and songwriter by night. As a Recorders Club regular, Mariel has been to nearly every session in 2013, and she’s just as likely to ask great questions about mixing
as she is to volunteer as a guinea pig for guitar miking techniques. “I went from knowing nothing about recording and production to having a great foundation after the first session!” says Mariel. “I now listen to music and think about songwriting in new ways. Weathervane’s Recorders Club has become a supportive community for musicians to learn from and inspire one another. I have learned something from everyone in each session and come home each time with new tools and motivation to make my music better. I am so grateful to be a part of the community”

Weathervane Internships Ross McCullough, Limavady Northern Ireland
Sarah Segner, Cherry Hill NJ
As time moves along, we’re still amazed by the global identity of the Weathervane Community. We met Ross McCullough through a Member Q&A session back in February. McCullough, a 22 year old resident of Northern Ireland, is a recent graduate from Leeds College of Music who aspires to make a career in audio engineering. Inspired by our community, Ross came to Philadelphia for an internship in June. “I’ve met so many genuinely great and welcoming people over the duration of my time here,” says Ross. “And watching these guys make records has been eye opening. I would like to thank every one of the Weathervane Music for the incredible opportunity at this early stage of my career! ”
Sarah learned about Weathervane Music as a Freshman at NYU when her professor invited Brian McTear and Peter English to speak. As an administrative intern at Weathervane, Sarah helped put our newly installed Constituent Relations Management (CRM) system through its paces, and collected data to monitor Weathervane’s key performance indicators, among other things. “I learned a great deal while working at Weathervane,” says Segner. “From the complicated process of attracting and maintaining donors to the ins and outs of running and expanding a nonprofit company. The best part, though, was meeting, working with, and getting to know the hard workers behind the company, both artists and business people in their own right who use their years of experience and passion to fuel what they love to do.” Top: Ross McCullough. Worldwide Discussion
BUZZZZZ An alarm clock goes off. Manuke looks over. It’s 5am on a dark Monday morning in February. He yawns, stretches and shuffles over to his computer, quickly checking his email and clicking on the invite to join a Weathervane online hang-out that’s already buzzing with activity. No, this isn’t a community of early birds-- Manuke lives in Australia. He’s waking up early to talk with other Weathervane preMIX Members from across the world about the new Steven A. Clark episode, not only to ask his own questions, but for us to learn more about his truly remarkable remix of “Bounty”. Spanning 14 times zones--from Australia, South Africa and the US— Shaking Through online hangouts have brought our most active members to get together, to discuss our work–and theirs. But the best part by far is that we meet each other, we learn about life in different corners of the world, and we become friends - It’s beautiful.

Shaking Through 2013 Launch Party On January 12, 2013, Weathervane Music and Johnny Brendas presented “Shaking Through Volume 4 Season Launch & Benefit” with riveting performances by Shaking Through artists Twin Sister and Ava Luna. The night also featured the premiere of R&B singer Steven A. Clark’s Shaking Through episode and a performance of “Bounty” with many of the musicians who played on the recording. The event drew over 250 people and raised over $3000 for the Weathervane Community.

Private Studio Concerts There’s nothing like being at a live show and watching something exclusive to you and the small group of others in the room. Hearing the sound of voices and instruments in the air around you is, for many of us, the reason why we fell in love with music. Private Studio Concerts feature the remarkable artists you’ve seen in Shaking Through, along with the chance to meet Weathervane staff and other supporters like yourself at Miner Street Recordings, the studio where Shaking Through is produced.
