Dear Yellow Jacket Fans, Greetings! Welcome to the beautiful campus of West Virginia State University. The campus community is looking forward to a positive 2009 football season. Football games are always exciting at “State.” Some of my most enjoyable experiences have been spent at Lakin Field cheering for the Yellow Jackets. Our outstanding student athletes put forth their best efforts in the classroom and on the field, a tradition they have upheld since our football program began in 1901. Your support and encouragement play an important role in the football team’s enthusiasm and eagerness to win. I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude for your patronage and dedication to West Virginia State University. Thank you for being a member of the “State” family. Have a great season!

The 2008 season started off in such a whirlwind of excitement and accomplishments that by the time the week five bye had rolled around fans, coaches and players all had to sit back and take a deep breath. After opening the season at Lakin Field with an offensive explosion that left Lincoln buried 67-13 the Jackets headed for Chicago. At historic Soldier Field they took on Central State in front of 15,000 fans in the Chicago Football Classic. The big city did nothing to disturb the team’s offensive rhythm as WVSU rolled to a 47-13 win. The squad then showed it had character to match its explosive offense when it rallied from a 21-7 fourth quarter deficit to defeat Fairmont State. It was the first time the Yellow Jackets had won in Fairmont since 1992. More “firsts” were on the way for this team. The very next week the Jackets took on Charleston in their own stadium and knocked off the Golden Eagles for the first time with a dominating performance. With a bye coming up the Jackets had finished off September with a 4-0 record and were promptly rewarded with the program’s first ever national ranking being voted #24 in the D2Football.com media poll and #25 in the American Football Coaches Association rankings. The bye week provided a little bump for WVSU as the Yellow Jackets moved up a notch in each poll. After rolling to a lopsided 41-7 win over visiting Concord WVSU climbed to #19 in the D2Football.com rankings and #20 in the AFCA poll. The team that had not had a winning season from 1992 to 2007 had now been nationally ranked for three straight weeks. But injuries were mounting in the backfield and on the line. The Jackets put up a valiant fight on the road at #23 Seton Hill before falling 35-28 as the host Griffins ran for the winning touchdown with just 10 seconds remaining. The loss dropped the Jackets to #25 in both polls. They rebounded the following week back at the friendly confines of Lakin Field with a 34-24 win over West Liberty. Then 6-1 WVSU climbed the polls to #21 in the D2Football.com poll and #22 in the AFCA rankings. Back-to-back losses to Glenville and Shepherd knocked to Jackets out of both the national rankings and conference race. The players did not lay down though and finished off the season in style with a hard fought 31-24 overtime win at home over West Virginia Wesleyan. Senior DeMichael Nesbitt and junior Andrew Eggleton were named first team All-WVIAC defensive players while junior quarterback Kevin O’Brien was named to the second team offense along with sophomore wide receiver Jermain King and running back Brian Mitchell. Senior William Jackson and junior Joe Clark were chosen for the second team defensive unit.

Opposing WVIAC football coaches made West Virginia State Coach Earl Monroe's job a little bit easier when they shockingly tabbed the Yellow Jackets seventh in the nine-team football conference. "It makes our first meeting real easy," said an obviously upset Monroe. "I know it doesn't mean much but I just assumed we would get a little more respect than that." WVSU is coming off back-to-back 7-3 seasons. The Jackets were 5-3 in conference games and finished fourth each season. "We should get respect for what we've done the last two years," Monroe said. "But it is what it is." And it should be a great motivational tool for a Jacket squad that returns record-setting senior quarterback Kevin O'Brien, two-time All-WVIAC defender Andrew Eggleton, and leading receiver Jermain King. Monroe praised defending WVIAC champ Glenville State, which blasted the Jackets last year, and Seton Hill, which finished second and then advanced two rounds in the postseason. "They earned respect for what they did last year and who they have coming back," Monroe said. "We just deserve the same respect." (WEST LIBERTY, W.Va.)---Defending champion Glenville State is the choice to repeat as WVIAC football champions in 2009, but the Pioneers are expected to have plenty of company atop the league standings as six of the league's nine squads received a first place vote in the annual coaches' poll that was released this afternoon at West Liberty University as part of the 2009 WVIAC Football Media Day festivities. GSC grabbed four first place votes and was followed by second place Charleston, while 2009 NCAA playoff participant Seton Hill was third. West Liberty, Shepherd, and Fairmont State hold down the fourth through sixth spots. UC, SHU, WLU, SU, and FSU each notched one nod for the top position. West Virginia State, Concord, and West Virginia Wesleyan round out the poll.

Glenville State (8-3, 7-1) must replace the nation's leading rusher in Jerry Seymour (WVIAC record 2282 yards in '08), but the Pioneers have plenty on hand in an attempt to defend their crown. Quarterback James McCants was ultra-efficient last season tossing a dozen touchdown passes, while only allowing four interceptions for an attack that averaged 33.9 points per game. Fleet Antwan Stewart grabbed 38 passes as a rookie, but Adam Adkins is the only returning starting offensive lineman from a unit that helped GSC establish a league record with 282.2 rush yards per game in 2008. Alan Fiddler's Pioneers should be tough on defense. Terrell Parker (18 TFL) and Kaleb Lawrence (19 TFL) are a potent pair at linebacker, while Scott Sears (15 TFL) can disrupt offenses from his defensive end slot. Charleston (7-4, 5-3) will rely on an experienced defense and speedy skill players in 2009. The Golden Eagles welcome back eleven defenders with significant starting experience, including a solid linebacker corps that includes Joey Lindamood (9 TFL) and LeDominique Williams. Free safety Xavier Drakeford (85 T) anchors the secondary, while Dominick Iacovone (10 TFL) and Ted Schaible (17 TFL) are forces up front. Tony DeMeo's Triple Gun attack is triggered by junior quarterback DaRante Hunter. The Florida native topped the WVIAC with a 163.42 pass efficiency rating and rushed for a team-high 478 yards. Aaron Higdon (9.6 ypr) and Julian Johnson (11.8 ypr) are big play threats from the slot back position. However, UC must find a replacement for Terrance Spencer, the school's career receiving leader, in the passing game.

Seton Hill (10-3, 6-2) shocked many in Division II football circles as the Griffins qualified for the NCAA postseason in the school's inaugural season of eligibility and the first season for head coach Joel Dolinski. SHU will look for back-to-back seasons of playoff football behind the electricifying duo of Antwarn Jones and Sammy Tranks. Jones, who ranks tenth on the WVIAC career rushing list with 3,501 yards, keys the Griffin rush attack. Tranks is one of the most dangerous kick returners in the country after posting five (4 punt, 1 kickoff) runbacks for scores in 2008. He also grabbed 63 receptions for 826 yards and seven more touchdowns. Matt Dowdell looks to resume his starting role at quarterback. The senior threw for 2092 yards and 18 touchdowns in 2007 as a regular. The Griffins face heavy losses in the secondary, but DE Matt Galadyk (21 TFL), DT Darnell Jones (44 T), LB Rob Ellis (12 TFL), and LB Steve Trent (82 T) should help form a strong front seven. West Liberty (7-4, 6-2) has developed into an annual contender for the WVIAC title after posting winning marks in each of Roger Waialae's four seasons at the helm in the Northern Panhandle. Strong-armed quarterback Zach Amedro, who has passed for 5730 yards and 39 scores in two seasons, leads a potentially explosive attack. Versatile Eddie Hills shuttles back into the tailback spot in 2009. The senior rushed for over 1,000 yards in his first two seasons as a Topper before leading the WVIAC in with 61 receptions as a junior. The WL defense returns eight starters and is led by the linebacker duo of Clay Beeler and Nick Harding. Beeler was recognized as an All-American by Don Hansen's Football Gazette after racking up 20 tackles for loss in 2008. Harding is a two-time All-WVIAC pick and paced the league with 115 stops last season. Shepherd (5-6, 3-5) experienced a rare down year in 2008 after the Rams had claimed four straight WVIAC crowns. Head coach Monte Cater, the all-time WVIAC leader with 155 victories, looks to get back in the championship chase with 17 returning starters. All-WVIAC honoree Jeremy Hairston is among five offensive linemen with starting experience. Running back Jimmy Sutch continued the Rams' tradition of a strong rush game with 885 yards and 15 touchdowns. Deante Steele, who took four (2 punts, 2 kickoffs) kicks back for scores in 2008, is an All-American return specialist. The junior pairs with Layton Hersh (5 INT) to comprise one of the WVIAC's top defensive backfields. Fairmont State (5-6, 3-5) returns a whopping 42 of 49 lettermen for head coach Mike Lopez, including 20 of 22 starters. Wide receiver Perry Baker established himself as a premier offensive threat after accounting for 589 receiving yards, 258 rush yards, and 11 scores as a sophomore. Quarterback Vick Bradford tossed 15 touchdown passes in 2008. The Falcon defense is keyed by senior Nate Black, a first team All-WVIAC selection after making a team-best 93 stops, including 13 for loss. Kicker Alex Ashley is climbing the WVIAC career charts after booting a dozen field goals last season, two of which were 50-plus yard efforts. West Virginia State (7-3, 5-3) has experienced back-to-back seven-win campaigns for head coach Earl Monroe after going through a drought of 14 seasons without a winning mark. Senior quarterback Kevin O'Brien is an all-region candidate and is a good bet to rewrite the Yellow Jacket career record book after throwing for 6088 yards in his first three years as a starter. Jermain King is one of O'Brien's favorite targets after making 51 grabs in 2008. St. Albans native Andrew Eggleton (90 T), a 2008 first team All-WVIAC pick at linebacker, is one of six returning starters on defense. Concord (0-11, 0-8) will look to turn things around as former California (PA) and Fairmont State Mike Kellar takes the helm of the Mountain Lion program after helping Cal to back-to-back regional titles. Only eight total starters are back for CU, including four on each side of the ball. Noseguard Dan Stone is one of the WVIAC's top interior defensive linemen. The wide receiver corps of Thomas Mayo (43 rec.), Kareem Royal (18 rec.), and Nate Tanner (24 rec.) could be a strength for the CU offense. West Virginia Wesleyan (1-10, 1-7) has a new head coach for the first time in a quarter-century as Dennis Creehan now guides the Bobcat program. The experienced Creehan has a 71-54-1 mark as a head coach with previous stops at Edinboro, South Dakota, and San Francisco State along with tenure as an assistant at Hamilton and Edmonton in the Canadian Football League. He also served on staffs at Army, Duke, Rutgers, and Arkansas State. WVWC welcomes back a league-low seven starters, but running back Reggie Taylor is one of the league's best after gaining 1165 yards in 2008. DL Keith Branch (6 TFL) and LB Donovan Pearson (50 T) lead the Bobcat stop troops.

West Virginia State University 2009 Football Prospectus

On Thursday, May 18, 2006 West Virginia State officials named longtime assistant Earl Monroe as the school's head football coach. A search committee presented a list of three finalists from among 125 applicants to Dr. Hazo W. Carter, Jr., the university's president, who made the final decision. Carter selected Monroe, the Yellow Jackets' interim coach. School officials were impressed with Monroe's aggressiveness in running the program as interim head coach, as the former defensive coordinator brought increased accountability for players on the academic and football sides. Their confidence was rewarded when, in Monroe’s first season, the Yellow Jackets recorded a 5-6 record, the most wins for the squad since 1999. His 2007 squad bettered that with a 7-3 performance marking the program’s first winning record since 1992. The Yellow Jackets followed that by winning their first five games of the 2008 season which led to the program entering the national rankings for the first time ever. The Jackets concluded the season 7-3 again giving Coach Monroe a career record of 19-12 in three years. Monroe, 52, has been with the WVSU football program since 1987, when he came to the Jackets' as a volunteer assistant. The Atlanta native and former Miami (Fla.) and West Virginia Rockets linebacker has been the State defensive coordinator since 1996. Monroe also has taught physical education classes at State, in individual and dual sports, strength and conditioning and golf.

Coach Monroe Comments on this year’s Yellow Jackets — “With O’Brien and the receivers we have back we’ll probably be more of a passing team but will still like to be able to run the ball.” “As a defensive minded person I like to see that clock run.” “Depending on how some of our young fullback candidates develop we may run more out of an ’I’ formation.” “Defensively we may try a 3-4 look at times instead of our usual 4-3.” On moving Valentine Bon to linebacker — “The move makes us a little faster at the linebacker spot. We just need to find a safety to move into his place that can do the job.”

A former Yellow Jacket player himself Clifford “Kip Shaw was most recently the Assistant Head Coach and Receivers Coach at Southeast Missouri State, a NCAA Division I-AA program. During his tenure with the Redhawks they averaged 414 yards and 27.6 points per game with an average of 269.5 of the yards coming through the air. The Yellow Jackets averaged 188.7 total yards and 13.7 points per contest in 2005. Prior to that Shaw worked as a graduate assistant under Bob Pruett at Marshall and was on the sideline for two Herd MidAmerican Conference championships and two Motor City Bowl appearances. He also served as Head Coach for Clarksburg Notre Dame High School for two seasons. Since returning to Institute he has helped the Jackets be ranked in the top three in the WVIAC every season in passing offense

William King, a former Capital High and Marshall standout linebacker, stepped right into the opening left when Monroe was promoted and the Yellow jackets have not missed a beat. King formerly held the position of Linebacker Coach at NCAA Division I Morgan State in Baltimore where he also was director of the Bears' summer football camps. Prior to that he worked as an assistant defensive backs and ends coach at James Madison and as first the wide receivers and then defensive ends coach at Tusculum College in Tennessee. King also spent a season as the defensive line coach at Elon College in North Carolina. He also played one season at linebacker in the CFL. The Jackets have finished in the top three in the WVIAC in pass defense since King took over the defense and last year they led the conference by allowing only 147 yards per game through the air. This is his fourth season with the Yellow Jackets.

Game #1 The Yellow Jackets face only one new opponent this season when they travel to Columbia, South Carolina for the second game of the season at Benedict College. The teams are meeting in the 8th Annual Palmetto Capital City Classic. The contest culminates a week of events in Columbia including a golf tournament and Battle of the Bands. Benedict replaces Lincoln on the schedule. This marks the second straight season the Yellow Jackets have been invited to participate in such an event having played in the Chicago Classic last year. The opponent in that event comes to Institute to open the season. The Jackets defeated Central State 47-13 last season in Chicago in what was designated as the Marauders’ home game. In that contest WVSU rolled to 528 total yards on offense with quarterback Kevin O’Brien accounting for 367 through the air. The rotating WVIAC schedule makes this year’s rivalry game against Kanawha Valley neighbor Charleston the conference opener for both teams. The Yellow Jackets defeated the Golden Eagles 24-21 at Laidley Field last season. It was the first win for WVSU over its rival since Charleston resurrected its football program in 2005. Homecoming is scheduled for October 3rd against Seton Hill. The Griffins handed State its first defeat of the season after five straight wins a year ago in a 35-28 seesaw battle. You can believe the Jackets will be out for payback in front of the Homecoming crowd. Other home games include a visit from defending conference champion Glenville State on October 17th and the season finale against Fairmont State. The Jackets dropped a shootout at Glenville last season by a 50-28 score in spite of O’Brien’s 282 yard, four touchdown performance. State’s biggest comeback win in years came at Fairmont last season as the Jackets overcame a 20-7 deficit entering the fourth quarter to take a 21-20 win. O’Brien hit Jermain King with an 11-yard strike for the victory. It was their first win at Fairmont since 1992.

Founded in 1924, the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) rates as one of the oldest leagues at the small-college level. The 16-member conference currently boasts the largest membership of any NCAA Division II league. The current membership includes Alderson- Broaddus College, Bluefield State College, University of Charleston, Concord University, Davis & Elkins College, Fairmont State University, Glenville State College, Ohio Valley University, Salem International University, Shepherd University, West Liberty State College, West Virginia State University, West Virginia Wesleyan College and Wheeling Jesuit University. The University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown and Seton Hill University joined the WVIAC for the 2006-07 season. Pitt Johnstown and Seton Hill are the WVIAC’s first out-of-state members since 1932. The WVIAC moved into the NCAA Division II ranks in 1994 after a long affiliation with the NAIA. The conference was the only one in Division II to place a team in the national quarterfinals in men’s basketball, football and baseball during the 1998-99 academic year. In 2002 the WVIAC, along with two other conferences, became the first league to earn four bids to the NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Championship. Commissioner Barry Blizzard, who has held the post since 1987, led the move into the NCAA. Blizzard, a native of Bramwell, West Virginia, previously served as the athletics director at Bluefield State. The long-time conference chief has served in a variety of national leadership positions, including a stint as president of the Division II Conference Commissioners’ Association. He is currently the chairman of the NCAA Division II Nominating Committee. Alumni of conference members include West Virginia State’s Earl Lloyd (the first African-American to play in the National Basketball Association), Salem International’s Cecil Underwood (two-term West Virginia governor), Pitt Johnstown's John Murtha (current US representative), and Wheeling Jesuit’s John Beilein (current Michigan men’s basketball coach). The conference’s basketball tournament is one of the longest-running events in collegiate hoops; the 70th annual event was held earlier this year at the Charleston Civic Center. Attendance at the WVIAC tournament ranks among the highest in Division II. The conference also boasts a 10-station radio network for the tournament. Women’s sports were incorporated into the WVIAC during the 1981-82 academic year as the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Association was absorbed. Currently, women’s championships are offered in softball, golf, tennis, track, basketball, volleyball, cross country and soccer. Men’s championships are conducted in football, cross country, soccer, basketball, baseball, golf, tennis and track. The league was recognized by the State Journal as one of “55 Great Things About West Virginia” in the magazine’s April edition. The WVIAC is headquartered in Princeton, W.Va.
