The Benjamin M. Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources directly admits students based on math readiness and meeting minimum requirements
for direct
ADMISSION
to the university. Although freshmen select their engineering major of interest when applying, all first-year freshman are admitted to the Fundamentals of Engineering program. Upon successful completion of this program, students advance to their desired major.
CRITERIA FOR ADMISSION WITH TEST SCORES
When applying to the university with an ACT or SAT score, the math subsection of the score will be used for placement in conjunction with general admission standards for the university. This ensures that students meet math readiness standards while building upon an academic foundation to continue with many of the required engineering courses.
We encourage you to talk with our recruitment team, schedule a visit, or attend an event to learn more.
TEST OPTIONAL ADMISSION CRITERIA
If you would like to apply without standardized test scores, we will admit test optional applicants who meet a minimum GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and general university admissions requirements. Due to the minimum math placement of college algebra for engineering, a math assessment is required prior to New Student Orientation in June. The ALEKS math placement exam, qualifying AP, IB, or dual enrollment courses and grades, or an ACT or SAT score are approved options for placement.
Even if you are admitted test optional, we encourage you to take the ACT or SAT for increased scholarship opportunities. Departmental scholarships for first-time freshmen offered by the Benjamin M. Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources require an ACT or SAT score to qualify.

SCHOLARSHIPS
when accepted to WVU. These scholarships can be used in conjunction with other scholarships.
At West Virginia University, we want the best and brightest students — not just the high scorers. Hard work, determination and grit are just as important to us as tests and GPAs.
That’s why 93% of our new undergrads receive financial aid, and 82% of incoming engineering freshmen earn scholarships. But we want every student to find their fit here.
So we’re expanding our scholarship tiers to offer even more students the opportunity to turn their passions into a lifelong purpose. For students who have not taken the ACT or SAT, please visit https://financialaid.wvu.edu/home/scholarships/freshmen for more options.
