Letter from the Director Joseph F. McNeel, Ph.D., Director Division of Forestry and Natural Resources Dear readers,
Letter from New Faculty Amy Welsh, Ph.D. Assistant Professor of Wildlife & Fisheries Dear Graduates, As you leave West Virginia University and embark on the next adventure of your life, I am pleased to be able to personally send you best wishes. While I write this, I can’t help but to reflect on my own academic and personal journey. One of the most important things I learned is to keep an open mind. An open mind will allow you to recognize opportunities that you otherwise may not have seen. When I was pursuing my undergraduate degree, I was required to take a class in genetics. At graduation, if someone had told me that my career would be based in genetics, I would have thought the person was out of their mind. However, by keeping an open mind throughout my post-undergraduate career, I learned that genetics was more than just studying fruit flies. It was a tool that could help me pursue my other interests, such as forensic science and conservation biology. That open mind took me down paths I never would have imagined, eventually leading me here to the Wildlife and Fisheries Resources Program at WVU. I continue to use genetics to provide data that will improve the management of various fish and wildlife species, but I also continue to keep an open mind about other directions my research may lead. I would like to conclude with a quote from the Roman dramatist Seneca that I heard years ago at a graduation ceremony. “Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.” I hope that your experience at WVU has prepared you for all the opportunities that will present themselves, and I wish you the best of luck.
Amy Welsh
Letter from New Faculty Greg Dahle, Ph.D. Assistant Professor
I am excited to join the Division of Forestry & Natural Resources and become a Mountaineer. My travels toward Morgantown have stretched from coast to coast with plenty of time in the Midwest, and I am now happy to call Appalachia my home. While my education is primarily in forestry, I do not fall in the category of traditional forestry. I am an arborist by trade and came to WVU to develop the arboriculture and urban forestry program. After receiving my bachelors in forestry and wildlife from Purdue, I moved to California where I worked as an arborist for seven years. I returned to Purdue to work on my masters and then earned my doctorate from Rutgers University. I fell into arboriculture by accident when I could not find a permanent job after college. Urban forestry became my calling and I have not looked back. Whether it is hiking in the woods or watching a red-tailed hawks soar over a field of golden rod, I enjoy playing in our ‘undeveloped’ landscapes and wish I could spend more time do so. Yet, I realize that I live in the urban green space we call a city and enjoy managing the tree resources to provide all the benefit we expect. Not only do these benefits include shading our homes, reducing air and noise pollution, and many more ecosystem services; urban forests also provide local hiking areas like the Mon River Trail and nesting platforms for the red-tails that hunt along Stewartstown Road just north of The Pit. Arboriculture deals with trees in the urban landscape, namely the planting and maintenance of trees in our backyards, along the streets or in the local parks. Urban foresters work with city planners to develop long-term strategies to increase the canopy coverage in our developed landscape. My primary research interest lies in understanding how trees can withstand environmental loads, such as wind or ice storms. In short hazard tree management or preventing trees from falling on our houses or cars. I am excited to be in Morgantown. The area seems wonderful and my family and I look forward to exploring the Mountain State. Please feel free to stop by my office to learn more about arboriculture, or to tell me about your favorite hiking trail in the area. — Greg Dahle

2012 DIVISION AW The Division of Forestry and Natural Resources hosted its annual Alumni Weekend April 13 & 14, 2012. In addition to friends, fellowship and food, the Weekend included old favorites like the Woodmen’s Competition. More than 120 alumni, students, faculty and staff convened at the new Erickson Alumni Center on the evening of April 14 for the presentation of Alumni Association and Division awards. This year marked the 77th such event—this annual “homecoming” is an important part of the life of the Division and we enjoy the opportunity to visit with past and present students and faculty and their families as they gather in celebration of shared accomplishments.

THE WILDLIFE SOCIETY CELEBRATED 75 YEARS AT W Members and supporters of the WVU chapter of The Wildlife Society gathered in Percival Hall this February to celebrate the milestone of the society’s 75th anniversary. In an event-rich day co-organized by The Wildlife Society and the American Fisheries Society, attendees participated in games, scavenger hunts, and a Wild Game Calling Contest, and the lobby of Percival was given over to presentations honoring individuals who have contributed to the research or profession of wildlife management and conservation. A special focus was Aldo Leopold, the US naturalist who wrote the first ecology textbook and is credited with inspiring the modern profession. The student chapters of The Wildlife Society and the American Fisheries Society are important pre-professional organizations that contribute to student education and networking. “What we do here is mostly education,” said Collete Lanzau, President of the Society for 2011-12. “We give biology, forestry and other majors an opportunity to do things they won’t necessarily get to do in class. Examples of workshops sponsored by the Society include chainsaw education, deer antler scoring, and Saw-whet owl banding. In addition to Wildlife Heritage Day, the Society also sponsors an annual Wild Game Dinner, a successful long-running fundraiser. Both societies are open to students of any major who are interested in wildlife conservation. “The Wildlife Society is also a great place to meet professionals that can help you in the future,” Lanzau said. This year’s Wild Game Calling Contest raised a ruckus just outside the doors of Percival Hall as contestants tried out their skills at imitating the calls of wild animals. Here are the winners (pictured, right) Matt Nicely (turkey), Taylor Groff (waterfowl), and Andrew Denhardt (other wildlife). Honorable mentions were: Chris Anderson (turkey), Matt Nicely (waterfowl), and Chris Anderson (other wildlife).

The West Virginia University Student Chapter of the Society of American Foresters had an outstanding ye in 2011-2012. The club started off the year with the Davis College welcome back BBQ and the Forestry Alumni tailgate. The group quickly jumped into community service and fundraising activities including a University Avenue roadside clean up and Christmas tree & wreath sales. The student chapter took part in camping trips, ski trips, Ag Olympics, a regional WV SAF meeting, the SAF national convention (Honolulu Hawaii!), and many other entertaining events. Starting in 2012 the Student Chapter has solely taken ove the preparation and planning for the annual Alumni weekend. Finally, the chapter took initiative to increa the arsenal of WVU Forestry merchandise available to students so all SAF members can proudly represen the program for years to come. Overall, the year was of great success, and the incoming officers look to be a driven few individuals that will undoubtedly continue on the West Virginia University Student Chapte of Society of American Foresters tradition!
