2014 SPRING OUTLOOK Taking into consideration last year’s results, everyone associated with the West Virginia University football program has put it in the rearview mirror and is looking forward to the 2014 season. The Mountaineers finished 4-8 in a season defined by inexperience, depth issues, injuries and inconsistency. “Our players have been working hard, and they are excited about spring ball and 2014,” Holgorsen, who enters his fourth season as WVU head coach, said. “Everybody wants to win and nobody wants to win more than I do. This coaching staff, this team, Mountaineer Nation, I understand how much everybody wants to win.” Holgorsen is excited as this marks the first time he has had a full complement of players. “We have 70 scholarship guys on the roster right now,” Holgorsen said. “That’s probably 15-20 more than we’ve had in the past going into spring. We’re excited about the amount of kids we have to work with. “The experience that we have coming back makes it a lot easier to line up when we have experience. You can have a functional spring practice when you can have two and three-deep at each position.” Holgorsen and his staff are trying a few different things this spring as they are presenting a different approach for the program. They started with the naming of spring captains, the first time he done this. “We had our players and coaches vote for spring captains and we’ve named five,” Holgorsen said. “Michael Molinari does everything. He’s got a 4.0 GPA and is a kickoff guy. He is going to try and do all three duties this season and beat everyone else out. Quinton Spain and Cody Clay will be our offensive captains, and Karl Joseph and Nick Kwiatkoski will be on the defensive side.” Holgorsen is planning to take his team on the road this spring for practices in Wheeling on Saturday, March 22, and in Charleston on Saturday, April 5 that will be open to the general public. Another practice session in Morgantown on Saturday, March 29 will be available for Mountaineer fans to observe. The spring game will take place on April 12. Each spot on the depth chart is open, and there is plenty of depth for position battles. However, the coaching staff feels better this spring, because they can work with the guys on individual technique and how to get better as opposed to last year when they had to teach them what to do.

OFFENSE

The offense had issues with lack of experience and consistency in 2013 and this spring they look to make marked improvement and move forward. “Ultimately, you have to find the best 11 guys. It’s most important to find who your starters are. Find the best players,” Shannon Dawson, offensive coordinator, said. “Spring is all about competition. You can be more physical in the spring, so you can do a lot more game

situations where it is live. In the fall, there aren’t many live practices. It’s hard to make a true evaluation unless you put them under the fire and under the heat like you can in the spring.” There are 20 lettermen returning on offense, including 14 players with starting experience from 2013.

Quarterback

Competition in the spring will be between senior Paul Millard, junior college sophomore transfer Skyler Howard, who arrived at WVU in January, redshirt senior Logan Moore and walk-on Gregory McPherson. Redshirt senior Clint Trickett will miss the entire spring after undergoing shoulder surgery in the offseason. He injured the shoulder right before halftime against Oklahoma State and battled injuries the rest of the way. He played in eight games and started seven, finishing with a team-leading 123 completions, 1,605 yards and seven touchdowns. Millard played in seven games and started four. He completed 93-of-168 passes for 1,122 yards and six touchdowns. Moore transferred to WVU from Fairmont State two seasons ago as a quarterback, then was moved to wide receiver last year, before being moved back to quarterback this spring. Howard transferred to West Virginia after spending his freshman season at Riverside City College. He finished with 3,151 yards and 33 touchdowns, helping lead Riverside City to a 10-2 record, the National Division Central Conference Championship and an appearance in the California State Championship game.

Running Back

Last year’s leading rusher, Charles Sims transferred to West Virginia for his senior season and left as the first WVU 1,000-yard rusher since 2009, finishing with 1,095 yards and 11 touchdowns. This spring, there will be healthy competition to replace him and fill out the depth chart. “We will see who the better one is. It is called competition,” Holgorsen said. “Competition allows you to see who is better, and when you don’t have that competition, like we did not have last spring, guys gets complacent and don’t try extra hard. The more competition we can create at any position, the better. Last year, we used quite a bit of running backs. Whether you can use one, two or three backs, you can lineup in a bunch of different places. Dreamius Smith and Wendell Smallwood, along with redshirts Andrew Buie and Dustin Garrison, and transfer Rushel Shell, give the Mountaineers plenty of depth. Smith finished with 494 yards on 103 carries, an average of 4.8 yards per carry and scored five touchdowns. Smallwood, a true freshman last year, was third on the team with 221 yards on 39 carries, averaging 5.7 yards per carry and scored a touchdown. Buie returns after redshirting last fall. He was the leading ground gainer on the squad in 2012, finishing

OUTLOOK with 851 yards rushing and seven touchdowns and was the fourth-leading receiver on the team with 28 catches for 318 yards. Garrison was slow in returning from his Orange Bowl knee injury at the beginning of last season. He played in three games before sustaining a hamstring injury that kept him out the remainder of the season, forcing him to take a medical hardship. Shell transferred to WVU from Pitt last fall and is throwing his name into the running back battle. A heralded high school player, he was the primary backup as a true freshman at Pitt, finishing with 641 yards and four touchdowns. At the fullback/tight end position, Cody Clay played in all 12 games and started nine last year, finishing with nine catches for 73 yards and a touchdown. Garrett Hope played in 11 games and Elijah Wellman redshirted.

Offensive Line

All-Big 12 performer Quinton Spain and Mark Glowinski, are fifth-year linemen at the guard positions, and Tyler Orlosky returns at center after seeing action in 11 games with three starts last season as a redshirt freshman. The big question centers around the starting tackle positions and building depth. “We might have one of the better guard combinations in the country with Quinton Spain, coming back as a senior and four-year starter with a ton of experience, and Mark Glowinski also has a ton of experience being a two-year starter out of junior college,” Holgorsen said. “Both are fifth-year seniors and have a year of experience under their belts with Ron Crook. They can be a tremendous force on the inside. Tyler Orlosky is

doing great and has some presence to him. He snaps the ball really well, which is nice to see. We have depth there, too, with Stone Underwood, Russell HaughtonJames, Tyler Tezeno and Tony Matteo.” Marquis Lucas and Adam Pankey bring the most experience at the tackle positions. Lucas started his Mountaineer career at tackle, playing five games, including starting the first four games last year, before being moved to guard. Pankey sat out the first four games last year as a redshirt freshman, recovering from a knee injury. He then added depth at right tackle, seeing action in seven games. Also looking to add to the mix at tackle is Michael Calicchio, who was used mostly on special teams, Marcell Lazard and Grant Lingenfelter, who were redshirted as true freshman last year, and Sylvester Townes, a junior college transfer who enrolled at WVU in January. “We lost two seniors last year,” Holgorsen continued. “Marquis Lucas will be moved to tackle to see if he can handle anything on the edge Adam Pankey, Marcell Lazard, Sylvester Townes, a junior college kid coming, are all big bodies that are long, tall and have good wing spans. We need to see which guys develop and which ones don’t. Mike Calicchio is a fifth-year guy who is enormous.”

Receiver

Mario Alford, Daikiel Shorts, Jordan Thompson and Kevin White earned most of the starts in 2013 and are four of WVU’s top five receivers from last season. Shorts tied for the team lead with 45 catches in 2013 and had 495 yards and two touchdowns, White finished with 35 catches for 507 yards and a team-leading five touchdowns and Mario Alford, who came on during the last half of the season, had 27 catches for 552 yards and two touchdowns. Thompson registered 23 catches for 178 yards. Add returners Vernon Davis, Devonte Mathis, KJ Myers, along with redshirt freshman Jacky Marcellus and mid-year enrollee Ricky Rogers, and there should be plenty of competition in the spring. Alford, White, Mathis, Myers and Rogers will compete on the outside, while Shorts, Thompson, Marcellus and Davis will battle for the inside spots. “We are returning three starters, four if you count Jordan Thompson. Daikiel Shorts, Mario Alford and Kevin White are guys who are returning starters and gained a lot of experience last year,” Holgorsen said. “As opposed to last year when we had to teach these guys what to do, we can use this spring to teach them how to get better at it.”

DEFENSE

Injury and depth issues caught up with last year’s unit and as the season progressed. Heading into the spring, there are 23 lettermen returning, including 13 players with starting experience. In the offseason, the defensive coaching staff underwent some changes. Tony Gibson is the new

OUTLOOK defensive coordinator. Former Mountaineer standout linebacker Damon Cogdell, a highly successful coach at Miami’s Miramar High, will work with the linebackers. Longtime Penn State defensive coach and coordinator Tom Bradley joins the staff and will coach the defensive line. Joe DeForest, the special teams coordinator, who has years of coaching experience with safeties, will oversee that position this year. Brian Mitchell will continue to coach the cornerbacks. “Not much will change this season. We are a threedown front. You can do multiple things with that,” Holgorsen said.

Defensive Line

There is a two-deep of returning players at each position on the defensive line. “For D-line, we should have some pretty good battles for the three spots on the line,” Holgorsen said. “Kyle Rose has taken a leadership role and done a great job with that. Dontrill Hyman is really working hard. At nose, Christian Brown is doing great and we are looking forward to seeing those guys with pads on“. “They need to be pushed by Eric Kinsey and Noble Nwachukwu. With those guys, explosiveness is something that you want, consistency is what you need to see. Darrien Howard is finally getting an offseason, because he didn’t show up here until mid-August. Getting him an offseason is important. Brandon Jackson has been moved to nose tackle. He is big powerful kid so hopefully we can see him in pads.” At end Rose and Kinsey will battle. Rose played in 12 games last year and started six. He finished with 49 tackles, one sack, 8.5 tackles for loss, a fumble recovery and a pass breakup. Kinsey saw action in 10 games and registered 15 tackles, a sack, three tackles for loss and a pass breakup. Battling at the other end will be Hyman and Nwachukwu. Hyman played in all 12 games and contributed 18 tackles, including 3.5 tackles for loss, a fumble recovery and a pass breakup. Nwachukwu saw action in nine games and finished with five tackles, a sack and a forced fumble. Brown and Howard will compete at nose tackle. Brown played in four games last year before a foot injury ended his season, and Howard saw action in four games. Freshman Davonte James, a heralded recruit from Ohio, enrolled in January and looks to add to the mix, along with Jackson, who was switched from the offensive line in the offseason.

Linebacker

This is the deepest position for the Mountaineer defense with 10 letterwinners returning, including four players with starting experience. “We have returning starters in Brandon Golson, Isaiah Bruce, Nick Kwiatkoski, Jared Barber, Wes Tonkery, Jewone Snow, Shaq Petteway,” Holgorsen said.

“With defensive personnel, what stands out to me is the depth that we have at linebacker. We have a collection of guys who have played and also have young guys who you look at, and they are real players.” At Mike linebacker, Kwiatkoski returns as WVU’s leading tackler from last year. He finished with 86 tackles, including 54 solo stops, two sacks, 6.5 tackles for loss, three interceptions, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. Also looking to contribute are redshirt freshman Al-Rasheed Benton and Snow. Barber injured his knee against Texas last season and will sit out during the spring. At Sam linebacker, Bruce, a two-year starter, returns after posting 43 tackles a year ago, He had five tackles for loss, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. Also trying to earn time will be mid-year enrollee Edward Muldrow and redshirt freshman Isaac McDonald. Tonkery sustained a season-ending hand injury at Baylor last year and will be out during the spring. Golson returns at one of the outside linebacker positions (WILL). He was one of the tops in the nation in forced fumbles (5), had two pass breakups and finished with 41 tackles. He was second on the team with four sacks and third in tackles for loss with seven. Adding to the mix are Hodari Christian, Petteway and Sean Walters. Christian is a redshirt freshman and Petteway returns after sustaining a preseason knee injury that kept him off the field the entire season. Walters played in 12 games last year. “Edward Muldrow is a long-armed guy and has attacked this offseason really well,” Holgorsen said. “Al-Rasheed Benton is a big guy who can fit in well. You have young guys like Hodari Christian and (Isaac) McDonald who provide a bunch of depth. We are three to four-deep at those spots so it’ll be interesting to see what we can do with a bunch of guys that have experience. We look forward to getting those guys out there and playing.” At the other outside position (SPUR), KJ Dillon, Marvin Gross, Malik Greaves and Dayron Wilson will be competing for time. Dillon is being moved after playing free safety last season. He finished with 28 tackles, including three tackles for loss, a team-leading six pass breakups and had a fumble recovery. Gross added depth at outside linebacker last year, seeing action in 11 games. He finished with 14 tackles, including 1.5 tackles for loss.

Secondary

Karl Joseph moves from free safety to bandit safety this spring. He is in his third year and has started all 25 games of his career. He is the second-leading returning tackler from last year, finishing with 68 tackles, including 56 solo stops, three tackles for loss, a team-leading four fumble recoveries, four pass breakups, two forced fumbles and an interception. Jarrod Harper played in all 12 games last season as a redshirt freshman and registered 10 tackles and a forced fumble.

WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY

OUTLOOK Sophomore Jeremy Tyler, junior Rumph and sophomore Carlton Nash will compete at free safety. Tyler played in eight games last year and finished with 17 tackles, including 12 unassisted tackles, three tackles for loss, a forced fumble and a pass breakup. Rumph played in nine games and Nash was used on special teams.

SPECIAL TEAMS

KARL JOSEPH “At safety, Karl Joseph has probably played more games as a junior than anyone else. KJ Dillon has fully recovered from severe dehydration he had last fall and now he is back up around 208, he looks good and is moving well.” Holgorsen said. “Those two guys bring a tremendous amount of experience for us there. Then you have Ricky Rumph, Jarrod Harper, Jeremy Tyler and Malik Greaves who just need to get out there and play ball.” Ishmael Banks returns at one cornerback position and will battle with Terrell Chestnut and Brandon Napoleon. Banks started all 12 games last season and finished with 32 tackles, including 28 solo stops, had two interceptions, one pass breakup and a fumble recovery. Chestnut and Napoleon both played in 10 games last year. “At corner, Ishmael Banks is returning for his senior year and has played a lot of football. With Daryl Worley as a true freshman he would walk in and you would think he was a senior,” Holgorsen said. “He’s a guy who looks good and has been having a great offseason. When you look at the roster you try and find guys that will try and beat them out for those positions, it might be someone we have or it might be someone that we have coming in. Keishawn Richardson has great footwork and Terrell Chestnut will be healthy and ready to go.” Sophomore Worley, mid-year enrollee Richardson and Nana Kyeremeh will compete at the other cornerback spot. Worley saw action in seven games last year and started five games, including the final three. He posted 45 tackles, including 36 solo stops, three tackles for loss, five pass breakups and had an interception. Richardson enrolled in January after a two-year stint at Northeast Oklahoma A&M junior college and Kyeremeh returns after sustaining a season-ending shoulder injury.

MOUNTAINEER FOOTBALL

Redshirt sophomore kicker Josh Lambert, junior punter Nick O’Toole, holder and kickoff man redshirt senior Michael Molinari and junior snapper John DePalma all return this spring. The biggest question surrounding the special teams is the identification and development of kick and punt returners. The coaching staff is counting on the return game to improve this season. Lambert had a good initial season, connecting on 17of-23 field goals and 35-of-36 extra point attempts. O’Toole earned All-Big 12 Second Team honors last year, averaging 44.1 yards per kick with 26 punts of 50 yards or more, placed 22 inside the opponent’s 20-yard line and having 23 kicks resulting in a fair catch. Molinari averaged 63.2 yards per kickoff and had 14 of them result in a touchback. He has handled the holding responsibilities for the last two years. DePalma, the 2013 WVU special teams MVP has held down the snapping positions for the past two years. Competing at punt returner will be Thompson, Davis and Marcellus. Thompson led WVU with 10 punt returns last year, and Davis and Marcellus have never returned a punt. The candidates for the team’s kickoff returners are Alford, Smallwood and Worley. Alford and Smallwood handled some of the team’s kickoff returning duties last season. Smallwood finished with 30 returns, averaging 18.0 yards per return and had a long return of 38 yards. Alford finished with 11 returns and averaged 20.8 yards per return with a long return of 43 yards. Worley has never returned a kick.

2014 SCHEDULE

The schedule will be one of the toughest, if not the toughest, in the school’s history. The Mountaineers face perennial SEC power Alabama, Towson, who made an appearance in the 2013 FBS National Championship game, and at Maryland in non-conference play.
