activities throughout the state. The team has a continuing relationship with Habitat for Humanity and the United State Tennis Association (USTA), which makes the team aware of any volunteer openings in the area.

FACILITIES MOUNTAINEER TENNIS COURTS West Virginiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Mountaineer Tennis Courts boast six rebound-ace hard courts and grandstand seating for more than 500 spectators. The facility is located in campus, adjacent to the WVU Coliseum, providing ample parking and easy access for players and fans alike. The courts were fully-lighted as part of the West Virginiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s new Basketball Practice Facility project. The courts were resurfaced in 2012, making the Mountaineer Tennis Courts one of the top tennis facilities in the Big 12 Conference.

mountaineer tennis RIDGEVIEW RACQUET CLUB The Ridgeview Racquet Club offers a place for the Mountaineer women’s tennis team to compete during inclement weather, and even holds practices and matches for West Virginia. Ridgeview features four indoor championship cushioned Deco Turf System courts, a climate-controlled environment with lighting at a competitive level for full sun protection from UV rays and spectator viewing areas to watch and enjoy the competitive play.

West Virginia is committed to building the finest facilities in the nation for its student-athletes.

Ridgeview also offers five outdoor lighted Hartru clay courts. In addition, the spacious Club House offers fully privately men’s and women’s locker rooms, a luxurious lobby and Player’s Lounge on a big screen TV. Members can play, relax and socialize in a pleasant quiet environment. At Ridgeview, the West Virginia tennis team has priority at designated times and will be accommodated for indoor play in the event of inclement weather, making it no longer necessary to travel 80 miles to Monroeville, Pa., for an indoor place of competition. There is also a full service pro shop and full instructional services by professional coaching and teaching instructors.

remains the only major conference in the nation to determine its champions in all sports directly on the field of play with a full round-robin schedule.

Mountaineers’ accomplishments on the playing field, West Virginia athletes have also made some noteworthy strides in the classroom. Some of those strides include a string of 10 consecutive years where the department has had at least one first team Academic All-American.

To help its student athletes achieve ¡

academic success, one of the nation’s finest facilities resides in the WVU Coliseum – The Athletic Academic Performance Center. The 8,000-square foot facility provides individual and group study areas, a plethora of computer stations and the latest in fingerprint technology used when signing in.

A total of 340 student-athletes were ¡

recognized for their achievement in the classroom last spring, at the annual WVU Student-Athlete Academic Excellence Banquet, honoring recipients of the Garrett Ford Academic Honor Roll. Implemented in 1989, the Garrett Ford Academic Honor Roll was created to recognize students who have achieved a grade point average of 3.0 or better. Since the program began in 1989, nearly 4,000 student-athletes have earned a place on the honor roll. Ford retired in 2011 after 44 years of service with the WVU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.

mountaineer tennis West Virginia University’s graduation rate for student-athletes has been impressive, to say the least, ¡ over the past eight years. The ratio of student-athletes graduating to the general student body has increased almost every year.

The West Virginia University women’s cross country team, men’s basketball team and women’s soccer ¡ team received public recognition in the spring of 2010 by the NCAA for their latest multiyear Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores. These teams posted multiyear APRs in the top 10 percent of all squads in each sport.

The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) provides a forum for the "voice of the student-athlete" ¡ on WVU's campus. SAAC membership provides feedback to administration about how to better WVU athletic programs. They offer input on the rules, regulations and policies that affect student-athletes' lives on NCAA member institution campuses.

Miha Lisac Head Coach First Season Georgia State (‘05) With extensive experience in the tennis arena as a player and coach at the collegiate level, Miha Lisac (MEE-ha LEE-sots) was named West Virginia University’s sixth women’s tennis head coach in August of 2013. Lisac is a former student-athlete and men’s assistant coach at Georgia State, who finished his sixth season as head coach of the women’s tennis program at his alma mater following the 2012-13 season. Lisac, the 2009 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Coach of the Year, took over the head coaching position in the summer of 2007 after serving as the men’s assistant coach from 2005-07. In six seasons at the helm, Lisac led the women’s tennis program to one conference title, a berth in the Sun Belt Conference Championship Finals, back-to-back CAA Championship finals appearances and two other berths in the CAA Championship semifinals. His overall record is 55-38 as a head coach, with the highlight of his tenure in 2009 when he guided Georgia State to its first NCAA appearance in program history and was named the CAA Coach of the Year in only his second season at the helm.

In Lisac’s third season as head coach, the team reached the semifinal round of the CAA tournament for the third straight year while producing two All-CAA athletes in Diana Nakic (first team singles, second team doubles) and Linda Hricistova (second team doubles). Nakic was named CAA Co-Player of the Year after a season in which she went a perfect 17-0 in singles in dual match play, and she was selected for the NCAA Singles Championship. In 2009, Lisac presided over one of the most successful women’s tennis campaigns in Georgia State history as the Panthers captured their first conference title to reach the NCAA Championships for the first time ever. GSU posted an 11-5 record and finished the year with a national ranking of No. 47. For his efforts, Lisac was honored as CAA Coach of the Year. In his head coaching debut in 2007-08, Lisac led the Panthers to an 11-9 dual match record and a berth in the semifinals of the CAA tournament. Three Panthers earned all-CAA honors in Dariana Kozmina, Martina Nitkova and Katerina Gresova.

At Georgia State Lisac’s final season with Georgia State was a benchmark year for the program as Abigail Tere-Apisah became the school’s first-ever tennis All-American after advancing to the Round of 16 at the NCAA Singles Championship. Tere-Apisah also took home CAA Player of the Year and Most Outstanding Performer honors. Whitney Byrd and Maryna Kozachenko became just the second pair in Lisac’s tenure to earn All-CAA First Team Doubles honors. The team advanced to its second-straight CAA finals and earned its highest ITA Ranking in school history (No. 38 on Feb. 25, 2012). The team finished the season ranked in the ITA National Team Rankings for a third consecutive year after defeating three nationally-ranked opponents. In 2010-11, the Panthers achieved a No. 55 ranking to finish the season, earning a spot at the national indoor tournament in the spring. The tournament takes the top 64 teams in the nation. GSU enjoyed an outstanding season, advancing to the CAA Championship finals and earning a 15-4 overall record, including an

recording its highest GPA of 3.72 in the fall of 2007, including multiple Panthers named to the CAA Commissioner’s Academic Award list. Podgorsek was also named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Second Team in 2008, while Nitkova was honored as the 2009 CAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year for women’s tennis. Prior to Head Coach Before moving to the head coaching position, Lisac worked under Nick Brochu, former head coach for the men’s tennis squad, for two seasons. In 2007, Lisac helped guide the men’s tennis team to its first league title as a member of the CAA and an NCAA berth. That year, Martin Steigwardt became the first Panther in history to compete in the NCAA Singles Championship. The 2007 squad set the school record for dual match victories with a 19-5 mark and ended the season ranked No. 36 in the country. Personal Lisac was born and raised in Velenje in the European nation of Slovenia, where he was ranked among the country’s top 10 juniors. A 2005 graduate of Georgia State, Lisac lettered four years for the Panthers and was a two-time All-Atlantic Sun Conference selection and a four-time recipient of conference academic honors.

Coaches

Lauren Holzberg Assistant Coach First Season Penn State (2009)

Holzberg comes to WVU after spending one season as the head women’s tennis coach at Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh, N.Y. She guided the Knights to an undefeated conference season, and a Skyline Conference championship. On the way to a NCAA Tournament berth, several players under Holzberg garnered player and rookie of the week honors. Before becoming a head coach, Holzberg spent three seasons as an assistant at the University of Albany. With Holzberg on staff, the Great Danes were two-time America East Conference consolation winners, and received both a singles and doubles America East Allconference selection, only the fourth time in program history having a player named to the all-conference team. Holzberg’s first assistant coach position came at Wellesley College in Wellesley, Mass. In 2009-10, the Blue won 12 matches and finished ranked No. 16 in the NCAA Division III rankings. Holzberg was an active part of coaching the 2009 NEWMAC Athlete of the Year.

“We are excited to have Lauren on board as our assistant coach,” says Lisac. “Lauren has played at a high level herself, and has extensive coaching experience prior to joining our program. I believe she will help us take steps forward in building the program.” As a player, Holzberg won a team-best 18 singles matches as a freshman at Penn State, and finished the season ranked No. 75 in the NCAA. Over her four years with the Nittany Lions, Holzberg played in singles positions 1-5, and doubles. She tallied over 30 invitational singles victories, and was a member of both the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) AllAcademic Team and the Academic All-Big Ten team. Holzberg graduated from Penn State in 2009 with a Bachelor of Science in kinesiology. was named the CAA Coach of the Year in only his second season at the helm.

Junior Ikttesh Chahal Roster Diversity Seven different countries are represented over the seven-strong Mountaineer roster. Sophomore Hailey Barrett, native of Lansing, Mich., is the lone American for Old Gold and the Blue. The remaining six hail from Australia, Canada, Georgia, Great Britain, India and Slovenia. Under New Guidance With extensive experience in the tennis arena as a player and coach at the collegiate level, Miha Lisac was named West Virginia University’s sixth women’s tennis head coach in August of 2013. In six seasons at the helm at Georgia State, Lisac led the women’s tennis program to one conference title, a berth in the Sun Belt Conference Championship Finals, back-to-back CAA Championship finals appearances and two other berths in the CAA Championship semifinals. His overall record is 55-38 as a head coach, with the highlight of his tenure in 2009 when he guided Georgia State to its first NCAA appearance in program history, and

Dynamite Duo Sophomore Hailey Barrett and junior Ikttesh Chahal return from the 2013 season as the No. 1 doubles team for WVU. Last spring, the duo went 7-14 and competed in more matches than any other tandem. Barrett and Chahal spent the entire season as playing partners, and competed as the top pairing throughout the year. The Tremendous Three Sophie Allen-Fisher joins the Mountaineers as the No. 11 overall tennis player in Western Australia, No. 3 for her age. In 2009, AllenFisher claimed the under-14 national doubles title. Kaja Mrgole comes to Morgantown as the No. 17 overall player in the Slovenian open division, and No. 5 player in the under-18 division. Oana Manole, native of Great Britain, will put on the Old Gold and Blue as the No. 67 ranked player in the United Kingdom in the under-18 division, and holds the ranking of No. 126 in the U.K. open division. Room to Grow WVU enters the 2013-14 season with one of the youngest teams in the Big 12. With the graduation of Audrey Wooland and Emily Mathis, junior Ikttesh Chahal becomes the lone upper classman on the Mountaineer roster. Three sophomores return to the court this season to join the three incoming freshmen.

Looking to Bounce Back WVU looks to rebound after last season’s 4-17 performance and record the program’s first Big 12 win as a member of the conference. The Mountaineers graduated their No. 1 singles player, but sophomore Hailey Barrett looks to build off of her 14-win total from a year ago and step into the role. Junior Ikttesh Chahal joins Barrett on the court for doubles, and is the lead candidate to move into the No. 2 singles slot after a 6-11 season at No. 3. Big 12 Opponents The Mountaineers will enter their second season of competition in the Big 12. In the spring of 2013, Texas, Texas Tech and Baylor finished in the top 20. In addition to national rankings, six schools represented the conference in the NCAA Tournament in Urbana, Ill. Five of the six teams won their opening-round matches, with only Oklahoma falling in the first round. Jane Little Memorial Award This award, a silver bowl donated by the West Virginia University Foundation, is given each year to the member of the women’s tennis team who best exemplifies the qualities of sportsmanship and team

Record Book spirit. Jane Little, a Charleston, W.Va., native, was a member of the first women’s intercollegiate team to compete for WVU. Jane was not the best tennis player on the team, but she displayed the best sportsmanship and was the most dedicated. When she died in October, 1977, her teammates from the 1973-74 team established this award in her memory. Dr. E. Gordon Gee served as president of The Ohio State University from 1990 to 1997 and again from 2007 to 2013. Prior to his service at Ohio State, he led Vanderbilt University (2001-2007), Brown University (1998-2000), the University of Colorado (1985-1990), and West Virginia University (1981-1985). He returned to WVU to serve as president for a term in January 2014. Gee has served in higher education for more than three decades and in 2009 was named by Time magazine as one of the top-10 university presidents in the United States. Born in Vernal, Utah, Gee graduated from the University of Utah with an honors degree in history and earned his J.D. and Ed.D degrees from Columbia University. He clerked under Chief Justice David T. Lewis of the U.S. 10th Circuit Court of Appeals before being named a judicial fellow and staff assistant to the U.S. Supreme Court. In this role, he worked for Chief Justice Warren Burger on administrative and legal problems of the Court and federal judiciary. Gee returned to Utah as an associate professor and associate dean in the J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University, and was granted full professorship in 1978. One year later, he was named dean of the West Virginia University Law School, and, in 1981, was appointed to that university’s presidency. Gee has been a member of several education-governance organizations and committees, including the Big Ten Conference Council of Presidents, the Inter-University Council of Ohio, the Business-Higher Education Forum, and the American Association of Universities. He was chair of the American Council on Education’s Commission on Higher Education Attainment and served as co-chair of the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities’ Energy Advisory Committee. In 2009, Gee was invited to join the International Advisory Board of King Adbulaziz University in Saudi Arabia. Active in a number of national professional and service organizations during his tenures, he has served on the boards for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, Inc., Limited Brands, and the National 4-H Council. In 2011, Gee was appointed to serve as secretary on the Board of Directors of Ohio’s economic development program, JobsOhio. In 2011-2012, he was asked by Governor Kasich to chair both the Ohio Higher Education Capital Funding Collaborative and the Ohio Higher Education Funding Commission. And in December 2012, he was asked to serve on the Columbus Education Commission. Gee has received a number of honorary degrees, awards, fellowships, and recognitions. He is a fellow of the prestigious American Association for the Advancement of Science, the world’s largest science organization. In 1994, Gee received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Utah, as well as from Teachers College of Columbia University. In 2013, he received the ACE Council of Fellows/Fidelity Investments Mentor Award and received the Outstanding Academic Leader of the Year Award on behalf of Historically Black Colleges and Universities. He is the co-author of 11 books, including Law, Policy and Higher Education, published in 2012. He is also the author of numerous papers and articles on law and education. Gee’s daughter, Rebekah, is the Medicaid Medical Director for the State of Louisiana, and an assistant professor of Public Health and Medicine at Louisiana State University. She is also a Norman F. Gant/American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology/IOM Anniversary Fellow.

Oliver Luck

Successful at each of his previous career stops, Oliver Luck continues that streak at West Virginia University. A former Mountaineer quarterback, Luck, appointed the University’s 11th Director of Athletics by President James P. Clements on June 9, 2010, has made significant strides in his first three years to enhance WVU’s role as a major player in the collegiate world. In his first year, Luck hired four head coaches, while maintaining WVU’s superior level of success. In addition to new hires, Luck oversaw the progress of major capital projects, such as the $25 million WVU basketball practice facility for men’s and women’s basketball and the women’s soccer training complex. He also fostered an atmosphere for achievement and triumph in the classroom and on the field. In year two, Luck led WVU into the Big 12 Conference, oversaw the best fundraising year in school history, implemented several safety and crowd enhancements at Mountaineer sporting events, increased overall department revenue, continued a master plan for facility upgrades and watched his football program gain its third BCS bowl victory with a record-setting 70-33 win in the Orange Bowl. In year three, Luck oversaw the reseating of the WVU Coliseum to further increase WVU’s fundraising efforts. He added an 18th varsity sport - the return of men’s golf – teeing it up in 2015 for the first time since 1982, and he continues his tireless work on facility upgrades to keep the Mountaineers competitive in the Big 12. Luck’s athletic and professional career has been the epitome of success, first as a record-setting quarterback for the Mountaineers from 1978-81, then as a professional quarterback for the National Football League’s Houston Oilers, and later as a professional sports executive. Luck’s journey to the big chair at WVU began in his native Cleveland, where in 1977 he was named the Cleveland Touchdown Club Player of the Year at St. Ignatius High. Luck chose WVU over Ivy League schools Harvard and Yale, embarking upon a career that saw him establish school records for touchdown passes and completions during his playing days, while also leading the Mountaineers to a 26-6 upset victory over Florida in the 1981 Peach Bowl. His best season came as a senior in 1981 when he completed 216 of 394 passes for 2,448 yards and 16 touchdowns. He passed for a career-high 360 yards in a 27-24 loss to Syracuse at the Carrier Dome in the final regular-season game of his career. Luck ended his college career with 5,765 yards and 43 touchdown passes, both figures still ranking among the best in school history. Luck was a two-time team MVP in 1980 and 1981, and also received the Louis D. Meisel Award for the WVU football student-athlete with the highest grade point average. The two-time ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American was the recipient of Today’s Top Five, presented for scholastics by the NCAA and was selected by the National Football Foundation as one of its 10 scholar-athletes to make a keynote speech at its annual banquet in 1982. Selected in the second round of the NFL draft by the Houston Oilers (44th overall pick), Luck spent four years with the Oilers from 1982-86. His most extended action came in 1983 when he started six games and finished the season completing 124-of-217 passes for 1,375 yards and eight touchdowns. After retiring from football, Luck became vice president of business development for the NFL and later was appointed general manager of the Frankfurt Galaxy of the newly created World League of American Football. He spent the ’95 season as general manager of the Rhein Fire before being named President and CEO of NFL Europe in 1996. Luck totaled more than 10 years with the NFL, before becoming chief executive officer of the Harris County-Houston Sports Authority in 2001. In that role, Luck oversaw the development and management of a $1 billion professional sports and entertainment complex for the city of Houston that included Minute Maid Park, home of the Houston Astros, Reliant Stadium, home of the Houston Texans, the Toyota Center, home of the Houston Rockets, Comets and Aeros and the Livestock Show and Rodeo. In 2005, Luck was appointed as the first president of Major League Soccer’s Houston Dynamos, helping that organization to a pair of MLS Cup titles in his first two years at the helm. Luck secured the funding for an $80 million soccer complex to house the Dynamos when the call came to return to his alma mater. BBVA Compass Stadium was built and opened in 2012 adding to Luck’s legacy with the professional soccer team, and the overall Houston sports facility complexes. He returned in May, 2012 for the opening ceremony of the soccer stadium that he fought so hard for. Prior to his current position at WVU, Luck was appointed to a four-year term on the West Virginia University Board of Governors, a spot he relinquished to become director of athletics. The Rhodes Scholar finalist graduated Phi Beta Kappa from WVU in 1982. He also earned a law degree from Texas, graduating cum laude in 1987. In 1997, Luck was inducted into the West Virginia University Sports Hall of Fame, and in 2000, he was inducted into the CoSIDA Academic All-America Hall of Fame. “It’s an incredible honor for me to be the athletic director at my alma mater,” said Luck. “I care deeply about this school, and WVU is truly one of the outstanding land-grant universities in the country. I am so pleased to be a part of the leadership team assembled under President Clements at a dynamic and strategic time in its history.” He is married to the former Kathy Wilson. They have two sons and two daughters: Andrew, a former All-American quarterback and two-time Heisman Trophy finalist at Stanford and No. 1 overall pick of the 2012 NFL draft by the Indianapolis Colts; Mary Ellen, a senior volleyball player at Stanford; Emily, a sophomore at Stanford and Addison, who attends Morgantown High.

From I-68 Take the Pierpont Road (mile marker 7) exit and follow signs toward the football stadium by heading West onto WV 857. At second traffic light, turn left (south) on US 119. Drive up a steep hill; the Morgantown airport will be on your left. Continue straight past several car dealerships and at the second light turn right onto WV 705. Turn left at the sixth traffic light onto Van Voorhis Road. The road becomes Patteson Drive when crossing University Avenue. Proceed up Patteson to the light at Jerry West Boulevard. Go straight at the light into the Coliseum parking lots. Turn right on to Gale Catlett Drive. Parking for soccer is available in the Shell Building lot. Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium is located below the Shell Building lot. From I-79 Take the Star City/WVU (mile marker 155) exit and follow signs to West Virginia University, heading south on US 19 and across the Star City Bridge. Proceed up Monongahela Boulevard past Texas Roadhouse. Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium is just ahead on the right. Parking is available in the Shell Building lot (next to Mountaineer Track).
