IN THE SPOTLIGHT Choosing to become a Mountaineer studentathlete is special. Without a professional sports team in the state, folks across the state and throughout the region love West Virginia University athletics. Mountaineers have the unique opportunity to represent themselves, their teammates and their university to news media, alumni, friends, family and the general public. Your interaction with these groups is also part of your educational process. If you take advantage of these opportunities, it can have a positive effect, not only on your career as a student-athlete at West Virginia, but also on your life after you have donned the Old Gold and Blue.

BIG 12 CONFERENCE The Big 12 Conference enters its 19th season of existence and its third under the direction of Commissioner Bob Bowlsby.
The Big 12 is a strong conference that, like WVU, values quality academic and athletic programs and has a great tradition of success.
The Big 12 is comprised of 10 institutions. Member universities include – Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, TCU, Texas, Texas Tech and West Virginia. Oklahoma State, however, does not field a women’s volleyball program.
In 2013, the league had eight of its nine volleyball programs finish in the top 100 in the final RPI rankings, including six finishing in the top 75.
Since the 1996-97 season – the Big 12’s first season of competition – the league has recorded 53 NCAA team titles and 552 individual national championships.
6
The Big 12’s very own Texas Longhorns volleyball team hoisted its third National Championship trophy in 2012, following a 29-4 season. The conference office is headquartered in Irving, Texas.

WVU FACILITIES
8
Stunning in its spacious yet simplistic structure and versatile in its myriad uses, the WVU Coliseum is one of the nation’s supreme showcases for volleyball. Whether it is during the day, when the sun shines down on the massive structure, or at night, when its golden lights make it an evening showcase, the Coliseum stands as one of the most striking facilities on the WVU campus. Several upgrades have taken place recently in order to be competitive in the Big 12 Conference. Items such as expansion of the strength and conditioning center, equipment room and training room, and refurbishment of the Coliseum roof were completed. In 2008, new, state-of-the-art score/video boards, complete with high resolution video and expanded messaging capabilities, became part of the fan experience at the Coliseum. Panasonic, together with WVU, used the new video board systems as a showcase to feature the latest state-of-the-art video and audio technology. A new state-of-the-art directional sound system and lighting system was also installed in the Coliseum. The 14,000-seat domed arena has been the home of Mountaineer athletics for the past quarter of a century, but its many uses include commencement, concerts, conferences, floor shows and a host of educational and athletic events. The Coliseum ranks second only to the Mountainlair (WVU’s student union building) in everyday activity.

MOUNTAINEERS IN THE COMMUNITY Winning and working hard are important to the West Virginia University volleyball team. But becoming successful and positive role models on and off the court is just as significant to them. The Mountaineers give back to the Morgantown and surrounding communities every chance they get. The team regularly donates its time and volleyball knowledge by hosting and teaching free clinics for local children to learn the fundamentals of the sport. Along with strengthening the youngsters’ volleyball skills they also teach the participants the importance of good sportsmanship, courage, determination and hard work. The Mountaineers are frequent visitors to the WVU Children’s Hospital and have sent Valentine’s Day cards to the troops in Iraq the last few years.

Gulick was one of one of four studentathletes to earn a perfect 4.0 GPA in both 2012 and 2013.
20
The team also found academic success as a whole when six student-athletes, including Gulick, were named to the Academic All-Big Teams in 2013. Nikki Attea, Anna Panagiotakopoulos and Hannah Sackett joined Gulick on the Academic All-Big 12 First Team, while Brittany Sample and Evyn McCoy were named to the Academic All-Big 12 Second Team. Two Mountaineer newcomers landed spots on the Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team. COACHING JILL KRAMER STAFF
At West Virginia
Jill Kramer Fifth Season
Jill Kramer was named West Virginia University’s third volleyball coach on Monday, Aug. 9, 2010, a day before the start of fall training camp.
32
Kramer guided the Mountaineers to new heights in 2013. She led her team to its best start in program history (10-0), its first Big 12 Conference victory and its first 20-win season in more than two decades. She also saw her squad finish No. 74 in the RPI – 118 spots higher than 2012 – the eighth-best improvement in the country and the largest among major conference schools. In the Mountaineers’ season finale, Kramer recorded her 50th career win in a three-set sweep of Buffalo. Kramer led WVU into the Big 12 Conference in 2012, when the Big 12 was coming off a 2011 season rated as the nation’s best conference according to RPI. WVU volleyball held the first Big 12 sporting event on the Morgantown campus, and a record-breaking 3,112 fans attended the match against then-No. 2 and eventual 2012 National Champion Texas. Before facing one of the toughest conference schedules in program history where the team played a record eight matches against ranked opponents, Kramer coached a pair of freshmen to the school’s first Big 12 honors. Hannah Sackett was named Rookie and Offensive Player of the Week on Aug. 27. Sackett became the fourth student-athlete since the rookie award was established in 2008 to earn both the honors in the same week. Nikki Attea also garnered Rookie of the Week honors on Sept. 17. In her first two seasons at WVU, Kramer hit the ground running as the Mountaineers began their 2010 season with their best start since 1987, posting a 4-0 record at the WVU Classic with senior captain Lauren Evans named the tournament’s most valuable player and high point scorer. In 2010, the Mountaineers defeated Marshall for the first time since 2001 with a dominating 3-0 win in the WVU Coliseum. Under Kramer’s guidance, WVU went on to defeat USF, 3-1, for the first time since 2005. The Mountaineers also shut down Pitt, 3-2, in 2010 and 2011 for the second and third wins in program history over the Panthers and the first wins in more than 40 years. In her inaugural year, the Mountaineers closed out the season just one match shy of a Big East Tournament appearance, finishing 15-15. Kramer’s influence on defensive play was seen when WVU was ranked as high as No. 1 in the Big East and nationally for digs per set in 2010 and 2011. In 2011, Kramer coached firsttime libero Serinna Russo to a final ranking of No. 7 in the nation and No. 2 in the Big East ranking in digs per set.
Academic Success Since starting at WVU in 2010, Kramer has put a great emphasis on the improvement of academics for the Mountaineers. The volleyball team has slowly risen to Kramer’s expectations and was honored with the AVCA Team Academic Award in July 2013 – the first in program history. The award honors collegiate teams that display excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team GPA on a 4.0 scale. Under Kramer’s guidance, Liz Gulick was named to the Capital One Academic All-District 2 Team in 2012 and 2013 and was the first WVU volleyball player to be named to the 2012 Academic All-Big 12 Volleyball First Team with a 4.0 GPA. Four players also were named to the inaugural Big 12 Academic All-Rookie Team. Gulick followed that up with another Academic All-Big 12 Volleyball First Team honor in 2013. In 2011-12, former Mountaineers Abby Monson and Andrea Miller were named WVU Foundation Outstanding Seniors, which honors less than one percent of the graduating seniors.

She followed that up in her second year with a class that was tabbed No. 9 by PrepVolleyball.com. Prior to her stint at Virginia, Kramer spent two seasons (2006-07) as an assistant at Alabama, helping the Crimson Tide reach the NCAA tournament in consecutive years. Kramer Q&A Your squad made a pretty dramatic turnaround last year, going from an eight-win season to a 20-win season. How do you expect to build upon that success this year? What a difference year makes. After spending a season in the Big 12 it became very apparent that we needed to mature as a group. Five of the seven starters went from freshman to sophomores and experience definitely counts for something in a league as tough as the Big 12. Adding impact performances from Jordan Anderson and Hannah Shreve definitely helped as well. We improved statistically in all areas, but where we saw the biggest improvements was our attacking and blocking production. Most importantly, this team is dedicated to building a legacy for WVU Volleyball. We celebrate small steps and tiny victories but keep pounding away.

You’re entering your fifth season at WVU – two of your previous seasons were spent in the Big East, and you’re now entering your third in the Big 12. Have any of your coaching philosophies changed with the move? What do you think were the biggest adjustments your team had to make? I am headed into, I believe my thirteenth year of collegiate coaching. My first coaching job was when I was a sophomore (playing at TCU) for Texas Advantage Volleyball club (then Metroplex). Moving from the Big East to Big 12 only magnified the adjustments we were going to need to make in 2012. Our team was still going to be built of true freshman and JUCO transfers all trying to get on the same page, only in a much tougher league from top to bottom. To grow and rise to any challenge we must adapt to the landscape we are competing

in, but there are some ideals that make me who I am as a coach that I have felt it is very important to stick to. I keep everything from each team I have coached from practice plans to motivational ideas and look back on them from time to time, just to make certain I stay to true to who I am. Every year is new here, even with returning many players. Each team dynamic changes along with the strength of your group, so we do our very best to maximize our strengths every year. Most people would refer to me as a ‘players coach’. In my mind, that’s the best compliment I could ever get from someone. I’m their biggest fan and their biggest critic all at the same time. In the end, they will always know that I love this University, I love this team, and I love them as individuals. Everything we do in our gym, on the road, in meetings, community service activities, hanging out together outside of volleyball will reflect that. I still want players here who are in it for the team and want to be a part of something bigger than themselves . . . people who want to bleed gold and blue . . . that is something that I do not see changing.
In what ways will you look to your lone senior, Evyn McCoy, for leadership? Evyn knows me, really knows me. She’s been here through all of our changes. She seen firsthand everything the program has been through to make the strides that we have and she won’t let anything break our stride. She does a great job connecting with players - from freshman on up - and making sure they are committed to the Mountaineer Volleyball Way, which is our teams creed. She will make an impact on the court, has the experience of being a starter for the past three years, and I am very comfortable entrusting the team with her leadership.
On November 30, 2013, you collected your 50th career win at Buffalo. Reflect on your coaching career – what were some of the highlights? What were some things you persevered through? At my core, I’m a builder and I like a challenge. I’ve never been one to take the easy or the common road. The continual development of this program is a daily highlight for me, but the most memorable event in my coaching career is our first Big 12 win. Watching a group of young people commit to a common goal and work together to reach it is what drives me every day - no one moment can replace that daily journey.
In addition to welcoming two more international players to the roster, you have a foreign tour planned for this spring. How will you use these factors to showcase your program? The two additions to our roster who are from outside the USA are Lamprini Konstantinidou from Greece and Poly Jeliazkova from Bulgaria. We will have the opportunity to visit Greece while we are on our foreign trip, but unfortunately we will not make it to Bulgaria. I think it will be great for Prini to get to play in front of her family and friends. As for Poly, both of her parents played in the professional league in Greece for many years, so I am sure they will have many friends there, as well. Going on a foreign trip is a very positive step for our program. This will be the first one in our programs history and, just like all of the teams in the Big 12, it’s our full intention to continue to have one every four years as long as the NCAA allows it. The majority of the players we have on our team now would like to continue to play professionally. This trip gives them a bit of a glimpse of what it can be like in some cases playing overseas. The game of volleyball that the rest of the world plays is very different from our game. We will play our matches with international rules, which will be good for our players to get used to.

You’ve continued to grow your home attendance each year. What are some of things about this season that you think the home crowd should be excited about? For starters we are bringing in BYU for our home opener who has a very good chance of making a run to the Final Four this year. They have a couple of All-Americans on their squad and a players that was drafted by the WNBA team LA Sparks last year. Our home schedule is packed with quality opponents. We will open conference play with the University of Texas
once again, which will be national televised on ESPNU. We have done such great job of showing the country what Mountaineer Nation is all about the past couple of years. I’d love to see that happen again. We have some new promo’s going on this season from Superhero night to ’90’s night, as well as an exciting student challenge and a big surprise for the month of October and our Dig Pink night. The dance team will be joining us along with the pep band for our conference matches this year. The speed of the game and the electric environment that our event staff will create will continue to help us climb the attendance ladder in the Big 12. I think we’ve made great strides, but we’re still not quite where we want to be at. We play against huge crowns on a nightly basis in the Big 12, and we’ve love nothing more than to replicate that atmosphere every game in Morgantown.

Preview SEASON Preseason Notebook.................................. 54 Schedule.................................................... 56 Opponent Information................................ 57
SEASON PREVIEW
2014 Season Season Preview In her fifth season at the helm of the Mountaineers, head coach Jill Kramer will look to continue with the success they found last season as they embark on their third Big 12 season. After winning just eight games in 2012, WVU posted its first 20-win season since 1991 in 2013, claiming five conference wins in the process.
Building on Success After the tremendous turnaround season last year, Kramer has put together a exciting and challenging schedule for 2014. The Mountaineers’ slate includes five matches against teams that have advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16. National finalist and 2012 National Champion Texas (September 24, November 12) appears on the slate twice as a fellow Big 12 member, as does Kansas (October 15, November 26), who fell to Washington in last season’s Elite Eight. Fellow Elite Eight member BYU (August 29) will participate in WVU’s Gold & Blue Players Challenge to start the season off. Coach Kramer’s squad will play seven more matches vs. 2013 NCAA tournament teams, starting with Duke as part of the ACC-Big 12 Challenge in Durham, N.C., on September 19, and continuing with North Carolina on September 20. The Mountaineers will play a home-and-home series with both Oklahoma (October 18, November 1) and Iowa State (October 5, November 8) in league action, and will host IUPUI as part of their opening tournament (August 30). Seven of WVU’s 2014 foes finished the 2013 season ranked inside the top 30: Texas (1), Kansas (12), Duke (14), Oklahoma (19), North Carolina (24), BYU (25) and Iowa State (27).
54
Veterans Evyn McCoy will be the squad’s lone senior in 2014, but will not be the only source of veteran leadership. Seven of the team’s returners played in 90 or more sets, and the team returns last season’s leaders in kills, assists, digs, blocks and aces. McCoy and Jordan Anderson each finished in the top 10 in the Big 12 in a pair of categories, while Brittany Sample ranked fourth in assists with 10.34 per set and Anna Panagiotakopoulos, Sample, McCoy and Panagiotakopoulos all set single-season individual records in 2013, and will look to best themselves this season. Sample, who also appears in WVU’s career record books, had the fifthbest season in program history with 1,189 total assists and finished 10th in assists per set. McCoy posted 117 total blocks to finish fifth in school history, while Panagiotakopoulos ranks eighth in digs (469) and digs per set (4.08).
Big Expectations for Anderson After such a stellar rookie campaign, one would expect big things out of Jordan Anderson as she enters her sophomore year. Anderson led the Mountaineers in kills (394) and kills per set (3.94), and finished third on the team in digs (256) and digs per set (2.56). In addition to ranking second in the Big 12 in kills and third in points, the freshman outside hitter was named to the All-Big 12 Freshman Team as well as All-Big 12 Honorable Mention. Anderson also earned AVCA All-Region Honorable Mention.
“My expectation of Jordan is to continue to consistently anchor us in the back row. She’s not only a terminator for us, she’s our primary passer,” said Kramer. “We really need that production out of her. With another year under her belt, she’s become even more consistent. She’s gotten stronger and she’s gotten faster. She’s been working on some new things that are going to make her a more dynamic player and different type of threat in the front row. I think she’ll continue to progress on those things and continue to be someone who really helps to stabilize us in the front row.”
Mountaineers on the International Scene A pair of newcomers were also representing their respective home country this summer, as Lamprini Konstantinidou competed for Greece in the 2014 U19/20 European Volleyball Championship and Paoulina Jeliazkova repped her native Bulgaria. Both also donned their country’s colors for the 2013 CEV Youth tournament. Konstantinidou has been the setter for the Greek National Team at both the junior and senior level in addition to the World Championship team. Jeliazkova also boasts plenty of big-time experience and was also a member of the 2013 Bulgarian Youth National team.
ESPNU Returns to the Coliseum For the second consecutive season, WVU’s Big 12 match against 2012 National Champion Texas will be broadcast on ESPNU. The event, which will take place on Sept. 24 this year, has proven to be a great success in the past. Last year’s televised game, the first ever for the Mountaineers, drew over 1,800 fans. The 2012 match-up between the two squads set a Coliseum record for volleyball attendance with 3,112 fans.
Home Sweet Home The squad will play 14 games in front of the home crown this season, including a pair of home tournaments to start the year. But even when the Mountaineers hit the road, they still run into familiar faces, particularly when they hit the southern portion of their Big 12 slate. After the squad opens their road schedule in Nikki Attea’s home state of New York, Jordan Anderson, Brittany Sample and Caleah Wells will play in front of a hometown crowd when WVU travels to TCU on October 29. All three hail from the Dallas/Forth Worth area, with Andeson coming from Flower Mound, Sample a native of Lewisville and Wells hailing from Red Oak. The trio will be 90 minutes from family when the team plays at Baylor (October 22). Coach Kramer, a graduate of TCU and a native of San Antonio, will return to her old stomping grounds and also get a chance to catch up with her family, who will be about an hour away when the team plays at Texas on November 12. Even international players, like Lamprini Konstantinidou and Anna Panagiotakopoulos (who was born in Greece), will return home when the Mountaineers embark on their foreign tour this spring.
The Newcomers Six new faces will join the Mountaineers for the 2014 season, and all are expected to make immediate contributions to the bright future of the squad. A pair of east coast players, defensive specialist Melvina Brown of Warrenton, Virginia, and middle blocker Alexa Oblak of Sunrise, Florida will join west coasters and libero/defensive specialist Gianna Gotterba of Stockton, California and outside hitter Morgan Montogomery of Centennial, Colorado. The group will be completed by a European duo in setter Lamprini Konstantindou of Thessaloniki, Greece, and opposite Paoulina Jeliazkova of Sofia, Bulgaria. “The thing I’ve learned about this class is they’re all really coachable,” said Kramer. “They’re all little sponges – ready to learn. I do think having returners for them to look up to and learn from is going to help push them along the way. This group of players can actually make improvements more quickly because of the environment that they’re in daily and, most importantly, because of their attitude. I expect a lot of them to be on the court quite often.”
USA Volleyball
2014 Season
Coach Kramer has been associated with USA Volleyball for nearly a decade, including a stint in 2011 as an assistant coach for the Women’s Junior National Team. In the spring of 2014, some of her players joined the mix as five Mountaineers participated in the US National Team tryouts last winter. Brittany Sample, Anna Panagiotakopoulos, Nikki Attea, Caleah Wells and Jordan Anderson traveled to Colorado Springs, Colorado, in February for the three-day tryout.
SEASON PREVIEW
“I think it taught them what level they needed to be at,” said Kramer. “There’s a lot of really great players out there, and it’s really easy to get lost in the mix. They learned that one big thing that makes a difference is consistency. Not just doing things right sometimes but doing things right all the time. It helped them mentally with their game and helped their understanding of what it takes to be great.”

SEASON REVIEW
2013 Season Review WVU husled the top-ranked Texas Longhorns on ESPNU
Hot Start The Mountaineers wasted no time getting things on the right track in 2013. West Virginia won its first 10 matches, marking the best start in program history (10-0). WVU also tied a program record by winning 21 consecutive sets, after losing its first set of the season against Eastern Illinois. The teams first-ever Big 12 Conference win came on Sept. 27, against Kansas State at the WVU Coliseum. The win gave the Mountaineers a 14-1 start to the 2013 campaign.
Tournament Success West Virginia participated in four tournaments during the non-conference season in 2013, recording four tournament wins and a 13-0 overall record. The Mountaineers won the Blue/Gold Invitational in Toledo, Ohio, to begin the season, claimed the Mountaineer Invitational title at the Coliseum, the Eagle Challenge in Morehead, Ky., and the Gold & Blue Player’s Challenge at the WVU Coliseum.
No Place like Home Coach Kramer and the Mountaineers experienced great success inside the WVU Coliseum in 2013. West Virginia posted an
62
Freshman Focus 11-6 record at home, including an 8-1 mark in non-conference play. The Mountaineers won their first eight home contests and posted a .208 team hitting percentage while holding their opponents to just a .177 hitting clip. Freshman Jordan Anderson led the team with a 4.00 kills per set average inside the WVU Coliseum, while sophomore Anna Panagiotakopoulos averaged nearly four digs per set at home.
Four new faces joined the Mountaineers in 2013. Rookies Jordan Anderson, Hannah Shreve, Jordan Lee and Haley Roe all played crucial roles while providing needed depth to the roster. The four combined to appear in 231 sets, registering 426 digs, 420 kills, 64 blocks and 32 serving aces. Anderson led the group, appearing in 30 matches while Lee followed closely behind with 27 match appearances.
Building a Program
The Mountaineers saw a major improvement at the net last season. Led by middle blockers Caleah Wells and Evyn McCoy, WVU improved its block per set average from 1.63 in 2012 to 2.20 in 2013. The 2.20 per set average was good for sixth-best in the Big 12 Conference. McCoy, who ranked in the top-50 nationally in blocks throughout the season, improved her personal block per set average from 0.82 in 2012 to 1.16 last season. Wells finished second on the team, just shy of one block per set.
West Virginia played its first-ever nationally televised home match in 2013, when it hosted the defending national champions and topranked Texas Longhorns at the WVU Coliseum on ESPNU on October 23. Nearly 2,000 fans were in attendance against the Longhorns. Two of the top four and three of the seven largest home crowds in program history came in 2013. To go along with the increased interest in WVU volleyball, West Virginia improved its win total by 14 matches last season. The Mountaineers finished No. 74 in the RPI – their highest finish in program history – and improved their RPI final ranking by 118 spots from 2012 – the eighth-best RPI improvement nationally.
Block Party
Kramer Reaches Milestone Head coach Jill Kramer capped off the 2013 season with her 50th career win, coming on Nov. 30 at Buffalo. In her four seasons as coach of the Mountaineers, Kramer has compiled a 50-68 record, most recently a 20-13 mark in 2013. During her tenure, Kramer has guided West Virginia to its best start in program history (10-0) In 2013, she helped usher in the largest crowd in program history (3,112) in 2012 against top-ranked Texas, while also recording the first 20-win season in program history since 1991 when her squad did so a year ago.
Anderson Claims Awards Freshman Jordan Anderson earned many accolades a season ago, including becoming
the first Mountaineer to receive an American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-Midwest Region distinction, and the first WVU player since 1988 to earn regional recognition. Anderson finished second in the Big 12 Conference in kills per set (3.94). The Flower Mound, Texas, native earned All-Big 12 Honorable and All-Big Freshman Team distinctions.
Success in the Classroom Coach Jill Kramer’s emphasis on academics has shown results in the classroom. Senior defensive specialist Liz Gulick was named to the Capital One Academic All-District II Team in 2012 and 2013 as announced by CoSIDA. Gulick became the first volleyball student-athlete to receive the award since Krista Smith in 2000 and 2001.
2013 INDIVIDUAL STATISTICS
Gulick also became the first volleyball player to earn a spot on the Academic All-Big 12 Volleyball First Team. Gulick was one of one of four student-athletes to earn a perfect 4.0 GPA in both 2012 and 2013. Freshmen Hannah Shreve and Jordan Anderson each earned the recognition, while Shreve did so with a 4.0 grade point average.

WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY
After retiring from football, Luck became vice president of business development for the NFL and later was appointed general manager of the Frankfurt Galaxy of the newly created World League of American Football. He spent the ’95 season as general manager of the Rhein Fire before being named President and CEO of NFL Europe in 1996. Luck totaled more than 10 years with the NFL, before becoming chief executive officer of the Harris County-Houston Sports Authority in 2001. In that role, Luck oversaw the development and management of a $1 billion professional sports and entertainment complex for the city of Houston that included Minute Maid Park, home of the Houston Astros, Reliant Stadium, home of the Houston Texans, the Toyota Center, home of the Houston Rockets. In 2005, Luck was appointed as the first president of Major League Soccer’s Houston Dynamos, helping that organization to a pair of MLS Cup titles in his first two years at the helm. Luck secured the funding for an $80 million soccer complex to house the Dynamos when the call came to return to his alma mater. BBVA Compass Stadium was built and opened in 2012 adding to Luck’s legacy with the professional soccer team, and the overall Houston sports facility complexes. He returned to Houston in May, 2012 for the opening ceremony of the soccer stadium that he fought so hard for. Prior to his current position at WVU, Luck was appointed to a fouryear term on the West Virginia University Board of Governors, a spot he relinquished to become director of athletics. The Rhodes Scholar finalist graduated Phi Beta Kappa from WVU in 1982. He also earned a law degree from Texas, graduating cum laude in 1987. In 1997, Luck was inducted into the West Virginia University Sports Hall of Fame, and in 2000, he was inducted into the CoSIDA Academic All-America Hall of Fame. He is married to the former Kathy Wilson. They have two sons and two daughters: Andrew, a former All-American quarterback and two-time Heisman Trophy finalist at Stanford and No. 1 overall pick of the 2012 NFL draft by the Indianapolis Colts; Mary Ellen, a standout volleyball player and graduate of Stanford; Emily, a current student at Stanford and Addison, who attends Morgantown High.
Director ofAthletics
As Director of Athletics at West Virginia University, Oliver Luck has worked endlessly and traveled the world to enhance the Mountaineers’ role as a major player in collegiate athletics. In four years on the job, Luck’s accomplishments have been nothing short of spectacular. In the past year alone, he successfully guided the start of construction on a new $21 million baseball park, which will open in 2015 and provide the Mountaineers with one of the best facilities in the Big 12. Add in his tireless efforts to secure a $75 million bond, start a $25 million fundraising effort and proceed with a $6 million new football team room and Luck’s efforts will show $106 million in facility improvements in the coming years to bring WVU’s aging facilities into the modern times. His work on the national level is equally impressive and equally valuable to West Virginia University. He was named in 2013 to a threeyear term on the inaugural College Football Playoff committee, which will change the face of the college football national championship. He serves on the NFL Player Safety Advisory Committee, chairs the Big 12 Budget and Finance Committee, serves on the board of American Campus Community, Inc., and in May, 2014, was one of the featured speakers at the White House at the Healthy Kids and Safe Sports Concussion Summit through his work with the organization Practice Like Pros. Among athletic directors, Luck is also one of the most popular speakers on the national circuit. Countless seminars and conventions feature him on panels and discussion groups to tap into his knowledge of the corporate and collegiate world. Before 2014, his previous three years at WVU were equally impressive and busy. He has hired new coaches to bolster WVU’s level of success. He guided the completion of major capital projects such as the $25 million WVU basketball practice facility for men’s and women’s basketball and the women’s soccer training complex. He led WVU into the Big 12 Conference, presided over the best fundraising year in school history (2012), implemented several safety and crowd enhancements at Mountaineer sporting events, increased overall department revenue, continued a master plan for facility upgrades and watched his football program gain its third BCS bowl victory. In 2013, Luck oversaw the reseating of the WVU Coliseum to further increase WVU’s fundraising efforts. He added an 18th varsity sport men’s golf, which will tee it up in 2015 for the first time since 1982. He outsourced WVU’s media rights to secure a 12-year guaranteed annual revenue source of at least $6 million per year from IMG. However, through all his accomplishments in four years in Morgantown, it all has occurred while he has fostered an atmosphere for achievement and triumph in the classroom and on the field. Luck, was appointed the University’s 11th Director of Athletics on June 9, 2010 and he was no stranger to success. In fact, Luck’s athletic and professional career has been the epitome of success, first as a record-setting quarterback for the Mountaineers from 1978-81, then as a professional quarterback for the National Football League’s Houston Oilers, and later as a professional sports executive.
