Spotlight IN THE
2
Choosing to become a Mountaineer studentathlete is special. Without a professional sports team in the state, folks across the state and throughout the region love West Virginia University athletics. Mountaineers have the unique opportunity to represent themselves, their teammates and their university to news media, alumni, friends, family and the general public. Your interaction with these groups is also part of your educational process. If you take advantage of these opportunities, it can have a positive effect, not only on your career as a studentathlete at West Virginia, but also on your life after you have donned the Old Gold and Blue.

BIG 12Conference
4
The Big 12 Conference enters its 19th season of existence and its third under the direction of Commissioner Bob Bowlsby. The Big 12 is comprised of 10 institutions. Member universities include – Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, TCU, Texas, Texas Tech and West Virginia. Oklahoma State, however, does not field a women’s volleyball program. Since the 1996-97 season – the Big 12’s first season of competition – the league has recorded 53 NCAA team titles and 552 individual national championships. The Big 12 is a strong conference that, like WVU, values quality academic and athletic programs and has a great tradition of success. In 2013, the league had eight of its nine volleyball programs finish in the top 100 in the final RPI rankings, including six finishing in the top 75. The Big 12’s very own Texas Longhorns volleyball team hoisted its third National Championship trophy in 2012, following a 29-4 season. The conference office is headquartered in Irving, Texas.

Stunning in its spacious yet simplistic structure and versatile in its myriad uses, the WVU Coliseum is one of the nation’s supreme showcases for college basketball, gymnastics, volleyball and wrestling. Whether it is during the day, when the sun shines down on the massive structure, or at night, when its golden lights make it an evening showcase, the Coliseum stands as one of the most striking facilities on the WVU campus. Several upgrades have taken place recently in order to be competitive in the Big 12 Conference. Items such as expansion of the strength and conditioning center, equipment room and training room, and refurbishment of the Coliseum roof were completed. In 2008, new, state-of-the-art score/video boards, complete with high resolution video and expanded messaging capabilities, became part of the fan experience at the Coliseum. Panasonic, together with WVU, used the new video board systems as a showcase to feature the latest state-ofthe-art video and audio technology.
BIG 12 Conference
A new state-of-the-art directional sound system and lighting system was also installed in the Coliseum.
The 14,000-seat domed arena has been the home of Mountaineer athletics for the past quarter of a century, but its many uses include commencement, concerts, conferences, floor shows and a host of educational and athletic events. The Coliseum ranks second only to the Mountainlair (WVU’s student union building) in everyday activity.
7
STRENGTH AND
8
Conditioning
The primary goal of the WVU strength and conditioning program is to provide each studentathlete with the best handson strength and conditioning program, with the best strength coaches and training facilities in the country. Our training philosophy is founded on two major principles: health and safety of the student-athlete, and performance enhancement. The strength & conditioning coaches facilitate a training environment that enables each athlete to reach her full athletic potential. Our strength and conditioning program develops character, mental toughness, confidence, leadership, accountability, and relentless work ethic. The strength and conditioning coaches collaborate with our sport coaches and athletic training staff to prepare every athlete for optimum performance in competition and to have the ability to withstand the rigorous training demands throughout the season. The entire year is carefully planned to prepare for optimal performance during the season and peaking at post-season championships. Mountaineer volleyball players train for explosive power, jump endurance, anaerobic capacity, maximum strength, speed and agility. Athletes are also educated in proper recovery strategies, including proper nutrition, hydration, rest and regeneration methods. We also have a registered dietician on staff to provide nutritional guidance and education to help each athlete perform at her peak fitness level and athletic potential.
9
Training ATHLETIC 10
The West Virginia athletic training program looks to get its student-athletes back on the field in a timely manner while providing quality health care for its student-athletes and coaches. The scope of the athletic training services encompass various domains including injury recognition, treatment, rehabilitation, prevention, education, and counseling that will enable the athlete to maintain an optimal quality of life beyond the span of athletic competition. Multiple athletic training rooms are available for studentathletes furnished with the latest in technology and equipment. The athletic training staff will work in conjunction with the team physicians and athletic administration to assure the student-athletes receive quality care throughout their careers at WVU.

The atmosphere for a volleyball match in Morgantown is intense. The WVU Pep Band, the Mountaineer Maniac student section and the community all come out to cheer on their Mountaineers. West Virginia plays its home matches inside the 14,000-seat WVU Coliseum. Fans throughout the state and the Mountaineer Maniacs come out to cheer on the Old Gold and Blue. The Pride of West Virginia, The Mountaineer Marching Band, is located in seating near the floor during select home games. A record-crowd of 3,112 fans watched the Mountaineers face eventual national champion Texas Longhorns inside the WVU Coliseum on Aug. 29, 2012. Recent community involvement projects led to larger fan base in and around the Morgantown area.

MOUNTAINEERS IN THE

Community
Winning and working hard are important to the West Virginia University volleyball team. But becoming successful and positive role models on and off the court is just as significant to them. The Mountaineers give back to the Morgantown and surrounding communities every chance they get. The team regularly donates its time and volleyball knowledge by hosting and teaching free clinics for local children to learn the fundamentals of the sport. Along with strengthening the youngsters’ volleyball skills they also teach the participants the importance of good sportsmanship, courage, determination and hard work. The Mountaineers are frequent visitors to the WVU Children’s Hospital and have sent Valentine’s Day cards to the troops in Iraq the last few years. In 2014, they purchased Christmas present for the Hoss Family Foundation. Mountaineer coaches and players also take part in Relay For Life of Monongalia County, the American Cancer Society’s signature activity. It offers everyone in a community an opportunity to participate in the fight against cancer.

Preview SEASON 2015 Season Preview................................. 46 2015 Schedule........................................... 48 Opponent Information................................ 49
2015 Outlook Sunahara Takes the Helm
Bringing with him more than 20 years of experience at the national and international level, Hawaii-native Reed Sunahara took the reins of the Mountaineers in March of 2015 after former coach Jill Kramer resigned to take a coaching job at TCU. Sunahara spent the previous season at Buffalo, guiding the Bulls to a 17-15 mark. Prior to that, the UCLA graduate was an assistant to former teammate Karch Kiraly with the U.S. Women’s National Team. Sunahara was the head coach at Cincinnati for 11 seasons, leading the Bearcats to eight NCAA appearances in that time span, including four showings in the NCAA Second Round.
Position Breakdown
SETTERS A dependable leader on the floor, senior Brittany Sample transitions back into the full-time role of setter after spending the 2014 season splitting time at defensive specialist and setter. Sample averaged 2.77 assists per set, ranking second on the team with 216, but is expected to see numbers closer to her 10.34 assists per set average from 2012. Haley Roe, who also saw action at defensive specialist in 2014, returns for her junior season with the Mountaineers. COACHES’ TAKE: This year we will look to return 2 veteran setters in Brittany Sample and Haley Roe. Both players are familiar with the hitters and look to expand their range and set distribution. A new, faster offense should be exciting for the hitters, fans and more importantly these “quarterbacks”.
HITTERS Sophomore Morgan Montgomery is the lone returning hitter for the new-look Mountaineers, though Sunahara has bolstered the line up with a number of newcomers. Montgomery saw limited action as a rookie, playing in 25 sets while averaging 1.52 kills per set. Right side Dzeni Hadzisehovic and outside hitter Mia Swanegan may be new to Morgantown, but both bring experience with them. Hadzisehovic joins the Mountaineers from North Idaho College. Hadzisehovic led the Cardinals with 3.52 kills per set, earning Second Team All-SWAC Honors for 2014. She previously played for Wyoming Community College, where she hit .257 with 1.99 kills per set. Swanegan, who could also serve as a middle blocker, spent her freshman season at league for TCU where she played in 30 sets for the Horned Frogs, averaging 1.47 kills and 0.73 blocks per set. Other additions to the group include Jada Carrol, a freshman out of Spencerport High in Rochester, N.Y., and Bridgett Talia, a native of West Center Valley who competed for Taylorsville High.
COACHES’ TAKE: This year’s mantra for the WVU hitters is “Crush and Cover” we will play with a fearless attacking attitude and fans and opponents alike will no doubt be impressed with our level of “physicality” in attacking. Mia Swanegan, Caleah Wells, and Bridgette Valia have live arms and can overpower blockers and diggers with sheer velocity and power. BLOCKERS All of WVU’s middle blockers boast Division I experience as they enter the 2015 season. Senior Caleah Wells headlines the group after appearing in 94 sets as a junior and averaging 0.70 blocks and 1.70 kills per set. In fact, Wells has missed just one contest in her career. Junior Hannah Shreve battled back from an injury last season to earn her way into the starting lineup, where she led the Mountaineers with 1.39 blocks per set. Shreve ranked third in the Big 12 in blocking, and earned the league’s Defensive Player of the Week accolade after posting a season-best nine blocks against Baylor in late November. COACHES’ TAKE: Expect to see more team scheming with blocking formations in 2015. Individual players moving around and team tactics to increase our blocking efficiency is a focus point of the staff. DEFENSIVE SPECIALIST/LIBERO Six players will compete to see action at defensive specialist and libero in 2015, with a pair of returners and four newcomers making this one of the deepest groups on the squad. Gianna Gotterba started at defensive specialist before transitioning to libero for the remainder of her rookie season, leading the team with 2.99 digs per sit and ranking inside the Big 12’s top-10. Classmate Melvina Brown participated in 18 matches last season, averaging 1.68 digs per set.

Sophomore Taylor Cross and junior MaTia Hughes will each bring a veteran presence in their first season with the team, as Cross joins the Mountaineers after spending a season at New Mexico while Hughes arrives in Morgantown after playing two years at NYU. Cross appeared in 14 matches for the Lobos, averaging 0.87 digs per set. Hughes was the ECAC-Metro/Upstate Player of the Year for the Violets, earning AVCA All-American Honorable Mention as the libero. She registered 4.77 digs per set with 48 service aces as a sophomore after posting 4.54 digs per set as a freshman.
HannahSHREVE
Freshman Paige Zywick joins the team from Seaholm High in Troy, Michigan, while Stone Ridge, Va., native Andrea Phung made the team this spring and will compete in her junior season.
COACHES’ TAKE: Gianna played libero last season and this year will take on a more complicated role, organizing our team serve receive. Her skills are fantastic, but we are looking forward to watching her develop as an “on-court coach”. The number one skill we need at this position is communication and we have some great communicators with G and Mel. Taylor Cross adds experience and athleticism and should compete for court time right away.
Schedule
The Mountaineers will play their first eight contests on the road, traveling to tournaments at Michigan (August 28-29), IUPUI (September 4-5) and Dartmouth (September 11-12). To make up for spending most of the first month on the road, the squad’s first three home matches are slated to be some of the most exciting of the season. WVU will host in-state rival Marshall on September 15, looking to rebound from last season’s 3-0 loss to the Thundering Herd. After wrapping up tournament play at Winthrop (September 18-19), the Mountaineers return to Morgantown to host perennial contender Texas on September 25. WVU nearly upset the No. 2 Longhorns last season, taking the first two sets before dropping the last three in heartbreaking fashion. The Mountaineers will close out September by hosting TCU on the 30th and will look to repeat last year’s thrilling five-set victory over the Horned Frogs.
West Virginia travels to Kansas (October 3) for its first Big 12 road contest before returning to the friend confines of the WVU Coliseum to close out nonconference play against Robert Morris (October 7). The Mountaineers then head back to Kansas, traveling to Manhattan this time to face Kansas State on October 10. The squad capped last season with a thrilling five-set upset of the Wildcats – the highest RPI team WVU has ever beat. A pair of Texas teams will travel to Morgantown in mid-October, as Texas Tech comes to town on October 7 before Baylor arrives October 17. The Mountaineers registered home wins over both teams last season and will look to do so once again before heading to Iowa State on October 21. WVU finishes out the month of October with a pair of home contests, welcoming Oklahoma to the WVU Coliseum on October 28 before hosting a re-match with K-State (October 28). The Mountaineers head out on a five-day road swing in November, heading to Texas for a Thursday night match on November 5 before making the trip to Waco to play at Baylor (November 7). The squad returns home to host Iowa State (November 11) before hitting the road once again, this time traveling to Lubbock, Texas, to face the Red Raiders for the second time November 13. West Virginia plays its final home game of the season on November 21, hosting Kansas while honoring a pair of seniors. The team will close out the season on a four-day trip over Thanksgiving. The Mountaineers will face Oklahoma on November 25 before heading to Fort Worth for their final match of the regular season at TCU on November 27.

2014 SEASON Review
An upset of NCAA Tournament-bound Kansas State in the season finale may have been the perfect way to cap a record-setting season for the West Virginia University volleyball team. Coach Jill Kramer’s squad reached a number of milestones and set numerous firsts as the squad continued to show growth and improvement in its third season in the Big 12.
Middle blocker McCoy wrapped up her four-year career with a trio of mentions in the record book as well and ranked seventh in the Big 12 in blocks with 1.12 per set. She departs Morgantown ranking fourth all-time with 350 career block assists and is seventh in total blocks with 385. McCoy is also tied for seventh all-time with a career average of 1.00 blocks per set.
“I think we saw our team take a big step forward this year,” said Kramer. “We had some individual play that has really improved and Nikki Attea and Jordan Anderson have become much more consistent. Hannah Shreve had an injury early on in the year and I think her role could have been much different without that but she stepped in mid-season and really started to make an impact for us. Evyn McCoy really blossomed at the end of her career, which is always what you want a senior to do. I think we had some great play from a couple of freshmen in Lamprini Konstantinidou and Gianna Gotterba.”
Anderson Leads the Way
Setting New Standards
Since joining the Big 12 in 2012, West Virginia has continued to improve each season. In 2014, they set a new program mark with five-set upset of Kansas State to close the year, tallying their sixth Big 12 win of the season. The Mountaineers finished 16-14 overall and 6-10 in the league. That mark tied them with TCU for sixth in the conference – one spot higher than their predicted finish of seventh. A number of Mountaineers reached milestones or etched their names in the WVU program record books. Playing through an injury, junior Anna Panagiotakopoulos reached 1,000 digs in the final match of her junior campaign and now sits at 1,010.

Outside hitter Jordan Anderson led not only West Virginia but the Big 12 in both kills and points. Anderson averaged an impressive 4.63 kills per set and 5.08 points per set in her sophomore campaign. Her 400th kill of the season set a new sophomore record in late October, and she went on to smash the previous mark with a total of 495 spikes – a number that ranks third in the WVU single-season record books. Her kills per set and points per set were also a new single-season records while her 1,276 total attempts rank third in the single-season record books. Anderson set a new career-best with 36 kills in a five-set win over TCU on October 11, a number that is believed to be a new single-match school record. “Jordan has been a great six-rotation player for us for the past couple of years. She played much better defense this year and passed the ball better this year. Her shot selection improved. You’ve got to move the ball around a lot when you get set as much as we does. I think she has really improved in those areas. Her serve got tougher and this all trying to work into a new rhythm with a new setter. That’s not easy. We look forward to taking another step in the right direction with having some continuity there. For two years now she’s been first in the Big 12 in so many important statistical categories I think
is a great feat for her and says a lot about her has a player and what she’s done for this program.”
A Numbers Game
West Virginia finished the season with an RPI of 65 – the highest in program history. The Mountaineers helped to attain this by topping their first-ever top25 RPI team after closing out the season with a fiveset win at Kansas State and taking a pair of wins over NCAA Tournament-bound team in K-State and Seton Hall, who they swept back on September 12. “Our team is one that really prides themselves in hard work and on discipline and effort and really welcoming every competition that we’ve got. I think this fall brought on great things for us as our program continues to develop and go in the direction where we make ourselves known as a national prominent program.” The Mountaineers didn’t lack for strong competition on their schedule as they finished second on the league in games against ranked opponents with six. It was a battle from the start as WVU opened the season by hosting then-No.9 ranked BYU at the Gold & Blue Player’s Challenge at the WVU Coliseum on August 29, falling to the Cougars 3-0. The squad then traveled to North Carolina on November 19 to face Duke, who had just dropped out of the top-25 and was receiving votes, as well as No. 13 North Carolina as part of the Big 12-ACC Challenge. The Mountaineers dropped a 3-1 contest to the Blue Devils before falling to the Tar Heels, 3-1, and life didn’t get easier from there. WVU returned home to host No. 2 Texas to open Big 12 play in a nationally televised match at the WVU Coliseum. The Mountaineers stunned the Longhorns and made program history by taking the first two sets,
becoming just the third team all season to win a set against the undefeated ‘Horns. However, the Mountaineers couldn’t maintain the momentum and dropped the final three to take the five-set loss. WVU then battled then-No. 22 Kansas State at the WVU Coliseum on October 25, once again taking a nationally ranked opponent to five sets and dropping a heartbreaker. The following week, the Mountaineers traveled to Oklahoma to take on the then-No. 25 Sooners in Norman, where they dropped a 3-0 contest. “For us to be in a league as tough as the Big 12 we need to play a stronger out of season schedule and continue to get better and better in conference play. This year we took a step forward with that. We played two teams outside of league play that made it to this season’s Sweet 16 and then of course Texas. Texas, BYU and UNC are all still in the mix so I think the strength of schedule really helped us when we got to conference play. It helped us take a step up and we’ll play another tough schedule in the future.” The Mountaineers have also shown steady improvements in their team statistics, finishing the season hitting .225 – marking the first time they have finished the season hitting better than .200 since they entered the Big 12. They also averaged more than 2.00 blocks per set for the second consecutive season, putting up 2.39 per set and marking an improvement of almost a block per set since they entered the Big 12.
Freshmen Emerge
The addition of talented freshmen created depth in the lineup for the Mountaineers, with some players contributing at more than one position.
GP 107 107 96 94 25 84 54 97 78 96 41 12 91 2
The squad showed exception talent in the classroom as well, as Anderson and Attea joined Hannah Sackett on the All-Big 12 Academic First Team, with Anna Panagiotakopoulos earning second team honors. Attea, a computer science major who boasts a 3.63 GPA, went on to become the first WVU volleyball player to earn Big 12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year. “With Nikki getting scholar-athlete and so many of our players earning all-academic honors it’s very evident that our players take what they do in the classroom very seriously. I think they manage their time very, very well especially with a travel schedule as tough as ours in the Big 12. It’s something they all know coming into it and they do a really good job of consistently staying on top of their schoolwork and communication with their professors. It’s nice to see them take that so seriously because ultimately, what they’re here for is school.”
Mountaineers Rack Up Honors
A number of Mountaineers garnered league and national recognition throughout the season, headlined by Anderson and Nikki Attea earning AVCA All-Midwest Region Team accolades in mid-December. Anderson also became the first Mountaineer to earn All-Big 12 First Team honors, and was thrice named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week.

Classmate Gotterba also saw the court from day one, starting at defensive specialist before becoming to team’s primary libero midway through the season. Gotterba posted 287 digs on the season – ranking fifth in program history for a freshman and finishing out the season ninth in the Big 12.

Konstantinidou started off the season by earning Big 12 Rookie of the Week honors in her collegiate debut. After missing the first portion of the season with an injury, sophomore Hannah Shreve rebounded to earn Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week accolades as the season came to a close.
“This year was the first year where we’ve had quite a bit of depth. We had different people adding at different times. Caleah Wells stepped in and was in the middle and on the right side at times. Nikki was on the left and the right side at times. Hannah Sackett played both sides. Brittany Sample set and played defensive specialist. Anna and Gianna both played libero and defensive specialist at some point so I think there was a lot of give-and-take with all the players and learning new roles along the way. We learned that adding to what we’re doing doesn’t necessarily mean you have to be on the court. That’s a growth that has to occur in any competitive volleyball program so that was a step in the right direction.”
WVU spent most of the season with a pair of freshmen in the lineup, headlined by setter Konstantinidou. The Greek rookie ranked in the top 10 of the nation in assists per set to start the season and finished the year finished the regular season ranking fifth in the Big 12 with 10.01 assists per set and eighth with 0.27 aces per set. Her 971 total assists on the season is second all-time in WVU history by a freshman.
2014 Individual Statistics
“It was really great this year to see more of our players get recognized for individual honors,” said Kramer. “Lamprini got a Freshman of the Week award, Jordan got the offensive award a couple times and Hannah was recognized for the first time. It’s really nice to see our players grow and develop and get recognized by our peers in the Big 12 for it.”
Morgan Montgomery and Melvina Brown also saw time in their first season in Morgantown. Montgomery, and outside hitter, averaged 1.52 kills per set with five total blocks. Brown, a defensive specialist, recorded 69 digs for an average of 1.68 per set while also serving a pair of aces.

E.GORDON Gee PRESIDENT
Dr. E. Gordon Gee is one of America’s most prominent higher education leaders, having helmed universities for more than three decades. In 2009, Time magazine named him one of the top 10 university presidents in the United States. In 2014, Gee returned to West Virginia University, where his career as a university president began. His leadership goals include putting students first, advancing the University’s research agenda, partnering with West Virginia communities and making sure that 1.8 million West Virginians know in their hearts and minds that West Virginia University is their university. Born in Vernal, Utah, Gee graduated from the University of Utah with an honors degree in history and earned his J.D. and Ed.D. degrees from Columbia University. He clerked under Chief Justice David T. Lewis of the U.S. 10th Circuit Court of Appeals before being named a judicial fellow and staff assistant to the U.S. Supreme Court. In this role, he worked for Chief Justice Warren Burger on administrative and legal problems of the Court and federal judiciary. Gee returned to Utah as an associate professor and associate dean in the J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University, and was granted full professorship in 1978. One year later, he became dean of the West Virginia University College of Law, and, in 1981, was named West Virginia University president. He served in that role until 1985. He went on to lead the University of Colorado (1985-1990), Brown University (1998-2000) and Vanderbilt University (2001-07). He served as president of The Ohio State University from 1990 to 1997 and again from 2007 to 2013. Gee has served on several educationgovernance organizations and committees, including the Big Ten Conference Council of Presidents, the Inter-University Council of Ohio, the Business-Higher Education
78
Forum and the American Association of Universities. He was chair of the American Council on Education’s Commission on Higher Education Attainment and served as co-chair of the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities’ Energy Advisory Committee. In 2009, King Abdulaziz University in Saudi Arabia invited him to join its international advisory board. Active in many national professional and service organizations, he has served on the boards for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, Inc., Limited Brands and the National 4-H Council. In 2011, Gee began serving as secretary on the Board of Directors of Ohio’s economic development program, JobsOhio. In 2011-2012, Governor John Kasich asked him to chair the Ohio Higher Education Capital Funding Collaborative and the Ohio Higher Education Funding Commission. In December 2012, he began serving on the Columbus Education Commission. And in March 2015, he was elected to the board of directors of the American Council on Education, the nation’s largest higher education organization. Gee has received many honorary degrees, awards, fellowships and recognitions. He is a fellow of the prestigious American Association for the Advancement of Science, the world’s largest science organization. In 1994, Gee received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Utah, as well as from Teachers College of Columbia University. In 2013, he received the ACE Council of Fellows/Fidelity Investments Mentor Award and the Outstanding Academic Leader of the Year Award on behalf of Historically Black Colleges and Universities. He is the co-author of 11 books, including Law, Policy and Higher Education, published in 2012. He has also authored many papers and articles on law and education. Gee’s daughter, Rebekah, is the Medicaid Medical Director for the State of Louisiana, and an assistant professor of Public Health and Medicine at Louisiana State University. She is also a Norman F. Gant/American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology/IOM Anniversary Fellow. Dr. Rebekah Gee is married to David Patrón, and they have five children.

SHANELyons DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS
West Virginia native Shane Lyons was named director of Intercollegiate Athletics and associate vice president at West Virginia University in January 2015. Lyons came to West Virginia after spending three years as the deputy director of athletics and chief operating officer at Alabama where he worked closely on day-to-day strategic leadership and direction with Alabama athletic directors – the late Mal Moore and current athletic director Bill Battle. At WVU, Lyons has oversight of 18 varsity sports, a department budget of approximately $80 million, 220 employees, approximately 450 student-athletes and a facilities master plan that included the opening of a $21 million baseball park and more $75 million to modernize other athletic venues in the next three years. During his time at Alabama, his responsibilities included oversight of a $120 million budget, daily monitoring of compliance and oversight of the Crimson Tide’s 21 sports teams. In addition, he played a pivotal role in a historic renegotiation of Alabama’s multimedia rights agreement that started in 2014 and was involved in several significant capital projects totaling more than $85 million. The Crimson Tide won seven national titles in five different sports during his time there – two in football, two in men’s golf, one in women’s golf, one in gymnastics and one in softball. He also played a critical role in the hiring of four Alabama head coaches. Prior to joining the Alabama staff in November 2011, Lyons spent 10 years as an associate commissioner at the Atlantic Coast Conference. At the ACC, Lyons focused on conference-wide compliance and academic initiatives, providing direct assistance to the conference’s presidents, chancellors and athletics directors in matters dealing with NCAA regulatory matters. In addition, he served as the ACC’s human resource manager and was responsible for the administration, negotiation and mediation of the employee benefits program and managing the conference’s organizational policies and procedures. He was part of the administrative team for ACC events, including the football championship game, the men’s basketball tournament and men’s and women’s NCAA basketball events. He also was a member and served as chairman on many prominent committees within the NCAA Governance structure during his tenure with the ACC. Prior to working at the ACC, Lyons served as associate athletics director for compliance at Big 12 member Texas Tech from 1998 to 2001. During that time, Lyons assumed responsibility for the leadership, administration and implementation of a comprehensive NCAA compliance program with emphasis toward rules education and extensive monitoring systems. He also served as oversight administrator for several of the Red Raiders’ athletic teams and had financial and operational supervision of the strength and conditioning, nutritional and sports medicine units. Before joining Texas Tech, Lyons worked at the NCAA for almost 10 years as a senior membership services representative, where he was responsible for the oversight and coordination of the 25 membership service representatives. Lyons began his career in college athletics in July 1988 as assistant commissioner of the Big South Conference. With the Big South, he was in charge of conference-wide compliance and championships.
A native of Parkersburg, West Virginia, and a graduate of Parkersburg High, Lyons was a standout basketball player for the Big Reds. He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in sport management from WVU in 1987 and 1988, respectively. He and his wife, Emily, a graduate of the University of WisconsinMadison, have two children: Cameron, 16, and Brooke, 12. Lyons is the University’s 12th athletic director.
